A Couple Of Good Saturday Reads

The first from Matt Labash over at The Weekly Standard really is a must-read. He followed around the completely "non-partisan" Enroll America group in Florida, who were walking around door-to-door looking to "inform" people about their "choices". Hilarity ensued.

One thing I've noticed, and it's a good thing for those of us that oppose the ACA, is just how deeply this Obamacare failure perception has penetrated the public consciousness. I even saw an Auburn fan carrying around a "[Nick] Saban Loves Obamacare" sign this morning (an Oregon student did the same to Stanford a few weeks ago on ESPN). It seems to have gotten to the point that the memes and lolcat generation is publicly mocking it, which is probably more dangerous to the law than supporters realize. Even minorities, the most supportive of the Obama agenda, are making fun of the law:

A few houses later, Rhianna tries to straighten out an address on her list with two guys standing on a porchÂ—one African American, wearing flip-flops and jogging shorts with no shirt, the other looking like the Cuban-American rapper Pitbull. They exchange pleasantries, and Rhianna asks if they both have insurance and are pleased with it. Yes, they assent.
But when I ask the gents if they have any intention of signing up for Obamacare, they start laughingÂ—at first politely, then almost violently. Â“No!Â” says Pitbull. Â“And wait online 18 hours?Â” Â“Obamacare!Â” says Shirtless, elbowing Pitbull. Pitbull then starts making finger-pistol signs directing me down the street. Â“Keep on walking with Obamacare,Â” he says, still convulsing.

Also, check out this Daily Beast article that examines the shifting demographics and leftward sprint in urban politics. Cities are becoming more and more Democrat super-majority controlled, largely because the middle class is getting squeezed out.

The decline in voter participation occurs as cities are becoming ever more one-party constituencies. Two decades ago a large chunk of the top twelve cities were run by Republicans, but today none are. AmericaÂ’s cities have evolved into a political monoculture, with the Democratic share growing by 20 percent or more in most of the largest urban counties.

Both are long, but well worth the time.

13 well, I can tell you one thing ace. The big cities are turning democratic, because white people are bugging the hell out of them that's why. I mean any white person with any kind of money is moving out of Detroit. That's because the crime rate in Detroit is astronomical. The reason for that is is because of the black entitlement attitude of what mine is mine and what's yours is mine if I want to steal it. That's why they're leaning left nowadays, not because the middle class is being squeezed out it's because anybody with any kind of sensor money especially white people are leaving the city.

19 What's funny is that the eeevil G.W. Bush made it possible for my husband and me to buy insurance for only $250 per month in 2006 or 2007. We were so relieved and grateful, since I had lost employer-supplied coverage. Also, our self-insurance (major medical) was cheaper than my employer-supplied coverage had been. Obama decreed that our plan was insufficient, so as of January, our coverage costs $980. Eeeek! However, my husband is eligible for Medicare now, so I checked out premiums for just myself on our state exchange. Cheapest is $341. Now it is more expensive to insure one person aged 51 than it used to be to insure two people, oldest aged 58. My lib sis-in-law told us that ObamaCare was created to help people like us.

There are a bunch of cities; Detroit, Gary Indiana, etc. that are frankly going to either burn or just fall apart. They can't be saved, they can't save themselves. It's not clear that that is a bad thing for us. Just like majority minority Congressional Districts, it may make it easier to win the rest of the districts. Furthermore, we know with certainty that these policies will bankrupt the cities, and then what? I don't think the rest of the state will sign on to bail them out. More likely they'll just tell them to GTH.

30 Also, it seems that, structurally, Repubs should oppose every mass transit project. They just allow greater density. They allow cities to become more Leftist and for them to extend their control to the surrounding suburbs. In Virginia, for example. Repub gov McDonnell allowed the extension of DC's metro system even further out to the suburbs. And the new metro stations around Tysons Corner are being building with zero parking. The Left is very open about the goal -- they want to dissuade car use by not building parking lots, thus increasing the cost of owning and operating a car. We do well in sprawling suburbs and exurbs. We get destroyed in densely packed cities and even in inner suburbs. "Sprawl" is a good thing.

31 The other thing about the Labash story is his having talked to the Obamacare navigator who was invoking his college education in "Queer Studies" (not making this up) and deploring how the exchange Web site only has two gender categories. Bias! Heteronormativity!

I suspect that the Obama organization did originally have the exchange site set up with the 17 or so different categories of "gender" that the LGBTQ-WTF crew currently proclaim.

But the political operatives then realized that maybe seeing all that weird stuff in the pull-down box for gender on the Web site might be just a leetle bit unsettling for Joe Sixpack and Jane Workaday as they got their first impression of Obamacare in practice.

No doubt they'll add the weird stuff back in later. Have to provide fan service to the various identity-politics blocs.

34 AP has a story about how only 1/3rd of Americans trust each. Down from over half in the 1970s. This was, of course, entirely predictable due to the changing demographics of America. There are many great things about "Diversity". More varied and interesting food and music, for example. But social trust is not one of them. Other things being equal, greater ethnic diversity increases corruption and distrust as people act in a more ethnically tribal manner.

The cities are being wrecked, and the "Middle Class", Democrat and Republican, are running. So the urban exodus was Republican/centrist a few decades ago. Now it is also turning Democrat, with the cities being hard Democrat-Socialist (like Chicago, Detroit and New York). And the socialist Democrats leaving financial hell-holes like Illinois and California. As somebody else said, the problem with the Left is that Obamacare is too complicated for many of the core constituency of the Democrats. The solution is Single Payer. The goal all along. Greater government tyranny. As bad as next year will be for the Democrats, if the Republicans have no plan, they in turn will get slaughtered in 2016.

50 Indiana has had a series of Republican Govs who prioritized building highways and bypasses. This is great because it allows people to stay in the smaller and medium-sized metros and not all be forced to move to Chicago or Indianapolis for jobs. A new bypass of Kokomo just opened last week. Better highways get goods and services in and out of a metro faster. They make the smaller metros feel better connected, so they can get to the bigger cities when they want to --- like for sports. The better highway connections bring more jobs and let people have a better quality of life.

The Dems, over my vigorous objections, have managed to shoot themselves in the dick without even a figleaf of protection (other than the MFM, but really they are just Dems too). Their pitiable attempts to somehow blame repubs for their failure makes it all the more enjoyable.

I keep TWS subscription because of their outstanding website.

I have had trouble paying my gas bill the last two months. I have paperless billing. The website in the email is wrong. I had to call last month from work to pay it. I tried four times in the past few days to pay it and nothing happened.

I turned on this Windows 8 computer to see if I had better luck. I managed to pay it.

I never see formatting options on Mac computer but I have ampersands with it. I'm trying to see if the bold option works.

I hate to defend anything Obama might say or do, but if things are likely to get really tense in that area then it might be wise to keep civilian planes out of it for the time being. With Japan and South Korean blatantly defying the Chinese and the commies coming under a lot of pressure to do something by the nationalist wing of their population, there are likely to be a lot of itchy trigger fingers in that sector of the sky in the near future and accidents have happened before.

72 Joe, Did you make the box kind for gluten free pancakes or make your own? I use quinoa and oat bran flour-some people with celiac can't use oat bran. Tastes much better than box brand.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk and oil. With a wire whisk, stir wet ingredients into dry ingredients until smooth. Ladle approximately ⅓ cup pancake batter onto hot griddle. Flip when bubbly and edges are slightly dry.

Inner cities are similar to a commune. Really, collectivist, or cult living, has high taxes (or your labor), shared spaces, shared transportation, and dining. It's also with a central planner like Bloomberg, Nutter, and Emanuel, similar to a cult leader who has his followers pay their entire trust funds, then fucks their women.

The real solution to this disease is to fence the area and keep these zombies among themselves and not to sicken the adjacent areas.

I have to agree with rickl, that the burbs are going more blue than red. They do not understand or will not understand that Democrat policies turned their urban centers into hellholes. It's something else, they think, but can't exactly name what.

However, the direct and stunning impact of Obamacare on their lives may be enough to make them think about the real causes of their own private Detroit. Maybe.

I always say: "your system must have been designed by the same people who built healthcare.gov". Invariably they chuckle and aknowledge the cluster that Obamacare is.
