— LauraW Which is the better way to cover the subject of guns with children?
1) Teach them that it is best to be utterly ignorant and terrified of firearms, to the point where merely chewing a poptart into a vague gun-shape seems like reasonable cause for punishment; or
2) This other method, called 'actual education,' right here.
Yep, that's SobekPundit's little 10 year-old crocodile sprout. And please do check out his 'ten things to teach boys,' a few items down in the comments section.
Liberals say about themselves that they value education, and broad-mindedness in general. But it seems to me that this depends on the subject matter, doesn't it? When it comes to firearms they are hysterically pro-ignorance.

Fear, not so much - the stock in trade is "helplessness", as in "I can't do anything about "X" on my own, therefore I need (fill in agency/government)".

My bro in MA and his wife would not allow any kind of toy guns with their son, while my two boys have had all kinds of toy guns growing up here in NC.
His son kept a closet full of sticks from the yard, that were his "guns" when he was very young. The boy, now 16, has such a keen interest in firearms that my bro has to take him to a range and rent guns, since my Bro won't allow them in the house.
And here I have a safe full, and my 16 yo could care less.

If you love your children you teach them gun safety or if you don't care about them, don't and make guns the forbidden fruit that they will pursue whether you like it or not.
It's like teaching your kids how to swim because you don't want them to drown; you don't tell them to never go near the water for the rest of their lives.

I always thought a long gun safety class culminating in shooting a .22 and/or .410 shotgun, you know the way it's been done for generations, is pretty good.
Not to diminish the obvious differences in capacity to kill a large number of people, but glorified garden tools, essentially, were used to kill millions and probably billions of people for generations. People have to learn not to kill each other. Kids will learn it either way.

I've got a son on the way. Mom is forbidding any knowledge of guns until he's about 8 or older, by which time I figure the Pavlovian reactions will be set firm and he'll never really be comfortable with 'em. Hell, I came into all late in life and without that I still suck.
OTOH, showing them to kids "too young" can get you in hot water these days too ["does your dad have guns?" - CPS workers everywhere]
Anyway I don't have any hard answers yet. I figure first find out if the kid is crazy or whatever, then go to toys and train safety, then airsoft.

I need to borrow the kid and the gun.
Just got off the phone with lawn spraying service. For the past few years, they've been getting greedy and ballsy, coming out to the house every few weeks to spray for this, that or the other thing.
Last fall I went ballistic on them, telling them to never come back. Well, yesterday I open the door to find a bill for the first spraying of the year.
The conversation this time was at an elevated level with a lot of "thieving cocksuckers" and "gypsy scam artists" thrown in. Now I'm wondering how many people they do this to, especially older folks who don't relish interpersonal conflict like I do.
Time to post the kid outside on the lawn with an AK-47 to enforce my "no spraying" rule.

Yes, but if you read the list there is nothing on there that isn't just plain old common sense for all. I was thinking double digits at the earliest. Though I know there is a long tradition in rural areas of learning a lot younger than that. There are places where you can walk out the door and shoot enough ammo for a platoon-sized engagement and nobody will notice.
My dad let me shoot at around 12 and I went to a camp with some firearms activities around the same age. Doubt that still exists.

You can't teach children about guns, but you CAN teach them how to put a condom on an erect penis, how to use a diaphragm, what an abortion is and how to get one, and why some people like fucking members of the same gender. The SOONER you teach children these things the more knowledgeable they'll be and thus less likely to take part in risky sexual behavior as a teenager and then an adult. It is IMPERATIVE that we start teaching our kindergarteners and pre-schoolers about the birds and the bees as early as possible.
But teach them about GUNS? BLASPHEMER!!

Afghan teenager fatally stabs US soldier
MyFoxDC: http://tiny.cc/swavuw
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - An Afghan teenager killed an American soldier in eastern Afghanistan by stabbing him in the neck while he played with a group of local children, officials said Monday.
...
Sgt. Michael Cable, 26, was guarding Afghan and U.S. officials meeting in a province near the border with Pakistan when the stabbing occurred last Wednesday, two senior U.S. officials said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.
The attack occurred after the soldiers had secured the area for the meeting, but one of the U.S. officials said the youth was not believed to have been a member of the Afghan security forces or in uniform so it was not being classified as an insider attack.
The official said the attacker was thought to be about 16 years old, but the age couldn't be verified...

At the fierce insistence of my SiL (DAMNED good woman). He was kind of jaded (lots of COD Modern War), until I had him watch me shoot the Finn M39. First round was with him hugging me from behind so he could feel a bit of the recoil. Meh.
