A Rare Sight in the Skies Tonight?
— CAC

One night only: the return of the Gamma Delphinid meteors?
Guide map and some background below.

Per the American Meteor Society, some background and why one scientist is predicting their return tonight:

On the evening of June 11, 1930, three members of the American Meteor Society (AMS) reported that they observed a flurry of meteor activity occurring between the hours of 2215 and 2245 (1015-1045pm EST) from Maryland, USA. These meteors were seen despite the fact that a nearly full moon was present in the sky during the entire display. No other reports of this activity was reported, leading to some doubts of the authenticity of this outburst. Of course one would not expect many meteor observers to be out observing under such unfavorable lunar conditions. In subsequent years this radiant was monitored but no further activity was seen on or near this date....Peter Jenniskens, in his study of outbursts from long-period comets, has proposed that the 1930 event was real and may be repeated on Tuesday morning June 11, 2013...No one knows the strength of this display or whether it will occur at all. It would most likely be of short duration (less than one hour and perhaps as short as 15 minutes).

Meteor showers are unpredictable, and given this year's lunar cycle, most of the better ones will be washed out. I strongly suggest you night owls try your luck. It's not every day someone sees a shower with less frequency than Comet Halley.

Somehow, I became in charge of the star gazing (I was going to College? Had to study Copernicus?)and I have always looked to the writings of H.A. Rey to guide me. H.A. Rey is the cat who wrote the Curious George books for those of you who have been a kindergardener, ever. So, I've learned how to identify 3 or 4 more constellations but mostly I just point at the darkish southern horizon and say, "Behold!". Usually does the trick... "No, Jaysus! DON'T look directly at the Moon! I don't care if it's upside-down, it's still bright enough to knock your eye out!"

111 8 so where in the sky is this shit supposed to appear here if Failifornia? Posted by: redc1c4 at June 10, 2013 08:25 PM (8MasJ) Look for the bright summer triangle. after about midnight it will be rising about halfway- up to zenith in the east. one of the stars also forms the head of a "cross", called Cygnus. Look southwards but not directly at Delphinus, because that's the radiante point- the point from which the meteors seem to be originating. youll miss them staring at it. best to just relax in a chair, look up around the summer triangle and points south east north and west. also, listening to Tangerine Dream helps.

217 Over at Powerline, Scott Johnson writes of Mr Snowden: "Read the Guardian profile and the Post articles and you will see that Snowden professes no loyalty to the United States. He conceives of himself as a citizen of the world, or of the realm of Digitalia. He does not sound like anyone to be trusted with an assessment on our behalf the costs and benefits of the course of action he has undertaken." Just so. One reason for the citizenry not to entrust its personal information to the government is that the big, bloated, blundering government is stupid enough to entrust it to Edward Snowden, as it was previously stupid enough to entrust it to Bradley Manning (the Wikileaks leaker). ItÂ’s only a matter of time before the halfwit leviathan entrusts it to a Major Hasan or a Tamerlan Tsarnaev. "A Blizzard of Snowdens" Mark Steyn

OK, been at work all day and then had a class this evening...WTF!

I come home and read  Chu's statement on Solyndra, and the comments that idiot Cunningham had regarding Issa's missives and I just have to ask: when did it become acceptable to tell a baldface lie and pretend that there's no foul if there's no harm.  I mean seriously, its like listening to the Russians back in the day tell everyone how great their economy was doing and watching them scrounge for toilet paper and cat food.

I mean really, does ANYONE take the word of this turd seriously?

246 Well garrett it seems Teebow is a Patriot.  One of the US ambassadors in Europe been cruising Marx Strasse for some female action. Snowden is proving to be as pure as the driven type.

This morning TCM drove me to the brink with two movies.  First was Kapo about a Jewish woman who collaborates with the Nazis to keep living.  Pretty harsh.  Not any happy ending to be seen.  They even built their own concentration camp outside of Belgrade for the filming.  Had to post billboards saying it was a movie set to keep the locals from freaking.  Then a movie called The Search filmed in bombed out Germany in 1948 starring Montgomery Clift.  About the child survivors of WWII including ones from the concentration camps.  Focuses on an almost feral boy who can't speak who escapes from an UNRRA ambulance with other kids because they think they are being gassed since the ambulance exhaust started to leak in.  So a GI manages to adopt him and starts to help him.  Meanwhile the boy's mother is going from UNRRA camp to another searching for him.
