A Reasonable Cop
— Dave in Texas

Supporters of Open Carry in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart in Waco TX yesterday. Before they held their gathering they called the police to tell them what they were doing as a courtesy. The officer said they didn't have to do that, but it was a good idea.

I particularly liked how the officer explained the law.

Common sense.

3 I carry, and every interaction I've had with a cop when carrying has gone well. I show em my CHL with my DL, they ask me if I'm armed and I say yes, it's (in a holster in my back, in the console next to me, wherever the heck it happens to be) and that's it. They don't ask for it, they just move on to the reason I got pulled over. ... As it turns out you're not supposed to spank it while operating a motor vehicle. I did not know that.

However, this is the tactic successfully used by the left.  Make people see it over and over again until they're used to it and it becomes publicly acceptable.  Why do people freak out when they see a gun?  They aren't used to it.  If they see it day in and day out, they get used to it, and it becomes a non-issue.

Posted by: cranky-d at August 04, 2013 01:35 PM (DVotP) Karl Denninger wrote a great piece a year or two ago about how the police need to have law-abiding citizens on their side. He pointed out that in a post-SHTF scenario, the police will be vastly outnumbered by criminals, gang members, and other assorted zombies. They will need to have civilian gun owners watching their backs. Which means that it's not to their advantage to alienate law-abiding citizens with imperious behavior, SWAT raids, shooting dogs, and whatnot.

33 In a world...

where the polite procedures of "going peaceably armed" are a thing, and the PSH factor fades, I can still see a certain Chuck Connors factor to carrying a long gun. Even if they are safer in many ways.

If your pistol, concealed or open, is in its holster, you're going peaceably armed. If it's in your hand, something is up, and any smart lawman would pull right in to see what that thing is. Assist, intervene, document, what have you: a deployed firearm is automatically police bidness.

With a long-stocked piece, on the shoulder or trail-carry is certainly not a firing position, but it's so close it's hard to tell at a glance. This will be a problem for the honest cop. If you think an in-the-pants holster is an inconvenience, wait until you've gone about your business for a day with a carbine slung backward on your back. It works a lot better on horseback than in a pickup truck.

I'm not against it, just noting that outside combat zones it's a PITA.

I used to be totally on the side of the cops.  Used to run with a bunch of them out in CA.  Still have one that I talk to frequently out there.

But I am no longer on the side of the cops as a default position.  The no-knock drug raids, the botched one especially.  Shooting dogs and generally being militarized in violation of the use of military in the US against civilians has changed everything.

The main thing is, even where it is legal, it has been shown to panic folks and upset certain LEOs.  I don't know how you undo 100 years of anti-gun.  Think about the frontier west.  One of the first ways a city could show that it was becoming modern and civilized was controlling who carried what, where.  ( I can't back that up, but I saw it in some movies.. once )

Yeah, used to be related to a cop via marriage (he was married to my husband's sister and then she died of lymphoma).  He said most cops in Oklahoma do not care if you as a non-criminal have a gun in your car--especially if you are a woman--they figure that you have the right to protect yourself.  Just be courteous, do not brandish it, and it will be cool.

69 Good afternoon all, If you consider an open carry meet-up provocative, it might be good to consider why you choose that descriptor. I think that the meet-up is a good way to bring back an acceptance of guns in society. Yes, an armed population is a civil population. We were at a gas station with my nephew who lives out of state and saw a family that was obviously leaving on a camping trip, my nephew's eyes were tea cup saucer sized. I would actually feel more comfortable seeing more people open carry.

83 The main problem with long guns in vehicles is theft.  I think that's why you don't see more of it is because of that.

Here in Arlington, a suburb of DFW, we have certain hot spots where despite extra policing there are smash and grab vehicle break-ins.  The LA Fitness is hit a lot.  Same with retail area near there.  The cops are constantly telling folks, EVEN with large lit up signs, that is is a problem and not to lock valuables in their cars.  Pathetic really.

Trunk.  Rumpled dirty blanket.  A handful of cheap not worth stealing hand tools tossed on top.

Smash'n grabbers prize speed above all else and won't bust into something where at least one prize worth the crime isn't openly visible.

Anything that extends their stay on-site starts dramatically increases risk of being caught.

Since the ocean of potential victims is so large, they can afford to be highly selective and only make a run at guaranteed winners.

Exactly. a Cow Orker of mine made the mistake of leaving his laptop on the floor of his car, (backseat), while we were in a meeting. Parked in front of a marked police car, (the cop was in the meeting with us). They smashed his rear window, and stole his laptop. In broad daylight. With people around.

105 Open carry doesn't necessarily mean a long gun.

If I had my druthers, I'd carry a full size pistol on my belt (either my 1911 or my H and K .40) and not bother with concealment.

Unfortunately I live in NJ, where my rights don't count.

107 Purp... I know what you're saying, but a long gun in the trunk isn't a rifle in a pickup window rack like what I remember seeing as a kid.  Part of it too is living in the city.

I was speaking to the law as you can have one in your vehicle, loaded and within reach.  The law allows for more than is pragmatic , at least around here.  Probably always good to go with a long gun in the trunk, but back there it does little good for shit.  If you have need for it back there and time to get it, you probably could have avoided the situation.

The smash and grabs are not getting into trunks so much as whatever they can "see" inside, and you are right, it is a fast deal... I guess that's why the cops can't seem to stop it.  Wherever the cops sit, the thieves just move over a half mile and hit those pkg lots.

109 OK, it's been 100 comments so I can go off-topic. My cat Kira often wakes me up in the morning when it's breakfast time. She employs a variety of stratagems, such as tapping my nose or chin with her paw, or tickling my ear with her fluffy tail. This morning I was particularly resistant, so she drove one of her claws into the side of my nose like a thumbtack, drawing a droplet of blood. I said, "Ow!" and got up and fed her. Later I realized that cats have claws in order to help them obtain food. So it worked in this case.

I am very conservative and very pro-gun, but it strikes me that carrying a semi-automatic rifle slung over your back in a Wal-Mart parking lot is unnecessary and counter-productive to the gun rights movement.  It is also likely to scare or alarm people.

Full disclosure:  I was born and raised (and spent a good part of my adult life) in NY, so maybe it's a cultural thing.

In Texas, the distinction is between "transport" and "carry." Generally, if you are crossing a county line (or going to some definite place in your home county where logically one would be transporting a rifle or shotgun, like to the range or hunting) and have a long gun in your vehicle, you are clearly "transporting," which is perfectly OK. Having it unloaded and with the bolt out removes any doubt.

If you are just driving around doing your errands with a rifle or shotgun in your vehicle, that's in a gray area. If you're "transporting" it into the grocery store, a little tougher to justify. If you're "transporting" it into the bank, that's just asking for trouble. In all those cases the question is whether you're doing so in a manner that causes others to react. So you're putting an element of another person's subjectivity into it, as Yip points out. Much better, if you need to be armed (e.g., carrying valuables, rough neighborhood, woman alone), to have a concealed handgun, which is perfectly legal if you are licensed.

Local ordinances might be more restrictive.

I'm not saying guns should stay in the closet.  I am saying it's not productive to strap a semi automatic weapon to your back and parade around a Wal-Mart parking lot.  I am not sure what that accomplishes.

To use your analogy, it would be the same as a homosexual walking around a Wal-Mart parking lot without any pants on and sporting a giant erection.  That is quite a bit different than "coming out of the closet."  It doesn't bother me if a person is gay; I just don't want them to show me their junk.

Good video, I think these guys have the right idea starting 'low and slow' and keeping the lid on the emotional aspect.  I've seen other open carry vids where there was a whole GeraldoRivera/MortonDowneyJr. thing going on, and really that does more harm than good.

Personally, I've had to starve myself just to buy my handguns (4" .38 fow work, compact 9mm for off-duty), and will have to take a second job to buy the AR15 I want.

...so, of course, I'm looking for a second job.

...and I'm hungry (so to speak).
