A Tale of Two Trailers [OregonMuse]
— Open Blogger

I generally like Joel and Ethan Coen's movies, although not all of them, I know they're kind of hit and miss. But I'm always interested when a new one comes out. I decided that wanted to see True Grit based pretty much entirely on the strength of this trailer:

First of all, I think this is a great trailer. It establishes the broad, general outline of the movie without giving too much away. And it introduces Mattie Ross as a compelling character. Who would not want to see a western about a 14-year old girl who is determined to bring her father's killer to justice? And how can she accomplish this task she has set for herself, given her age and gender?

So right there, you have an interesting story and a compelling character.

I was looking forward to seeing True Grit, and I was happy when it lived up to my expectations. And what's more, I think it's the best film the Coens have ever made.

Now watch this trailer of the latest Coen Bros. movie, Inside Llewyn Davis:

So, having seen the trailer, what do we know about the movie? Well, the main character is a shabby-looking hippie folksinger, we know that much. And there's a woman, probably his ex, who hates him. But what is this movie about? The trailer doesn't really say. I guess it's about the shabby-looking hippie folksinger's life, which appears to consist mainly of him wandering around from place to place. The randomness of the scenes that were selected to be included in the trailer do not suggest any kind of a cohesive whole, unlike the way that the True Grit trailer did.

And more importantly, do I care about the shabby-looking hippie folksinger? In a word, no. Nothing in the trailer gives me any reason to think that Llewyn Davis is a character I should be interested in. Unlike Mattie Ross.

Why should I see this movie? There's no story and no character. I guess it might actually turn out to be a good film, but you'd never know it from the trailer.

So, unless it starts getting really great reviews, I think I'm going to give it a pass, and wait for the Coens' next one.

I just thought of something: what might redeem this movie is if the story would invite us into the perspective of the ex, and at the end we will think, yes, this guy really is an arsehole.

Addendum: The original source for True Grit, Charles Portis' novel of the same name, is quite good, and the Coens' adaptation is reasonably faithful. The book has more religious parts, though. For example, remember the hanging scene near the beginning of the film, where the Indian was prevented from speaking his last words to the crowd? In the book, he was allowed to speak, and he basically gave his Christian testimony. Not sure wny they had to change it for the movie. Also, the book is narrated by the adult Mattie Ross and one point, she gives a little sermonette on predestination, that I admit warmed the cockles of my Presbyterian heart:

The Indian woman spoke good English and I learned to my surprise that she too was a Presbyterian. She had been schooled by a missionary. What preachers we had in those days! Truly they took the word into "the highways and hedges." Mrs. Bagby was not a Cumberland Presbyterian but a member of the U.S. or Southern Presbyterian Church. I too am now a member of the Southern Church. I say nothing against the Cumberlands. They broke with the Presbyterian Church because they did not believe a preacher needed a lot of formal education. That is all right but they are not sound on Election. They do not fully accept it. I confess it is a hard doctrine, running contrary to our earthly ideas of fair play, but I can see no way around it. Read I Corinthians 6: 13 and II Timothy 1: 9, 10. Also I Peter 1: 2, 19, 20 and Romans 11: 7. There you have it. It was good for Paul and Silas and it is good enough for me. It is good enough for you too.

So evidently Mattie Ross grew up to be a rock-ribbed Calvinist. And given her character, we shouldn't be the least bit surprised.

That was my attitude going in, but the movie changed my mind completely.  IMO, it was very, very good.  I especially liked the Iris Dement song at the end (Leaning on the Everlasting Arms).   For a coupla joo boys, the Coens have a real ear for music.

36 Hello, everyone. I have attended my AA (Ace of Spades Anonymous) meeting but unfortunately I fell off the wagon and here I am again ;^)- but only briefly. I hope it's o.k. to go off topic just to post this annpuncement. II have posted several times this week about a service that may take place in churches in or near your town this evening about 7:00 or 7;30 p.m. ng. It is called "The Longest Night of the Year" service and is specifically designed to be low key and acknowledge that-frankly-Christmas can be crappy if you have had painful losses during the year. It is based on this hope: "The Christmas spirit is that hope which tenaciously clings to the hearts of the faithful and announces in the face of any Herod the world can produce and all the inn doors slammed in our faces and all the dark nights of our souls that with God all things are possible, that even now unto us a Child is born." Ann Weems . For those that can't find a service in your town (which you may be able to find by googling or binging "Longest Night Of Of The year service and your town, I found one on the internet. I thought I would include it in case people had an interest: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i00txDlx9SY That light shines in the darkness, yet the darkness did not overcome it. John 1:5 God bless, strengthen and heal those in emotional pain this Christmas season. BTW I loved "True Grit- both the book and the movies but I hadn't remembered what she said about various Presbyterians. I also Enjoyed that darkly funny movie "Fargo" .

39 I watched the trailer, and two things stand out.
1) The girl's breasts in a sweater
2) F. Murray Abraham, who we don't see nearly enough of.

Come to think of it that could also apply to 1).

Posted by: pep at December 21, 2013 03:02 PM (6TB1Z)

40 I don't know why OB has such a problem with this trailer. This is obviously a movie about a guy whose very existence and life journey oozes the art of ennui. ALL Coen Bros movies are art pieces on the absurdity of the American mind-set. Can't you see how absurd you morons look objectively?

It is getting great reviews but from everything I can it's a fairly self-conscious attempt by the Coens to go back to a less structured film.   Given that it's about a character whose life lacks structure, that may be an excellent choice for combining form and function.   The problem is that I have negative interest in the character.

If you hate your character, why the hell should I like him/her?   See the entire works of Annie Proulx.

I was recently in a coffee shop in Hobe Sound, Florida and saw a face but was unable to affix a name.  After the stooped old man with cane left, I asked the waitress if she knew him.  She acknowledged she knew him and served him frequently.  That decrepit old man with cane was Bert Reynolds.  Life has not been kind to Mr. Reynolds.

Let me suggest he led a life of excess, possibly cocaine or pussy.  Or maybe a combination of both with poor genes.  After seeing Reynolds, I'm thankful for my gift of good health and longevity.

Posted by: Doctor Fish at December 21, 2013 03:21 PM (pJF+c)

70 Calvinists (myself included) believe in the strange idea that the word of God actually means what it says, and not what people want it to mean. For example, society pretty much completely subscribes to the idea that people should follow their hearts. But in Jeremiah 17 we learn that "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?" For all those who were offended by Phil Robertson's paraphrasing from Paul's letter to the Corinthians, I submit that their problem is with God, and not with Phil. Sodomy is not only a sin, but it is one of the worst sins-- according the word of God. The message is that the world, including liberals, many conservatives, even many professing Christians, hate the actual word of God and falsely think that they can believe anything they want without any eventual consequences. And if you tell them they are on the path to destruction (in an effort to forewarn them and point them toward salvation from eternal damnation), then the world responds by saying Christians are hateful and vile for their strange beliefs. Arminians respond to the world's hatred by perverting the word of God in telling unrepentant people how much God loves them and just wants to save them, if only people would decide to come to Him. Arminian's God is not the same God described in plain English in the KJV of the bible. God is sovereign, not weak. God does not depend on man for anything, including whether or not man will decide on his own volition to come to Him. Calvinists, on the other hand, warn people to repent. Read "Sinners in the hands of Angry God" by Jonathan Edwards. Repent by falling on your face for the vile sinner you are, and beg for God's mercy and forgiveness. Forgiveness is not to be found on the merits of anything within you as there is nothing in you nor anything you can do to deserve forgiveness, but is based on the sacrifice Christ (God incarnate) alone made on the cross for the forgiveness of the sins of those, and only those, whom He died for. Two messages, one true, the other one false. One works, the other gives no reason for people to even think they need to repent as God already loves them.

78 All entities possess a nature. It is impossible for an entity to exist, to truly be an entity and yet lack any nature. That nature need not be simple; it can be complex, and often is. Nor need it be constant; it can be variable, and often is. At the moment of its creation -- its coming into existence -- an entity possesses an initial nature. This nature can then be, and often is, altered through interaction with itself (purely internal interactions, an abstract notion) and with the other entities in existence, and, in fact, a combination of the two, which is generally common. The other entities in existence, being entities, also have an initial nature, acquired at the moment of creation, as well as a developed nature, and the nature of the interaction between the various entities is determined by the developed natures of the various interacting entities. And the developed natures of the various interacting entities is determined by their initial natures and the manner in which the various interactions end up altering/developing those initial natures. That seems somewhat complex, and a little redundant, but generally correct. Later, all. God bless. :-)

84 OTOH, Calvinism gives people no reason to repent, since they're probably Satan chow anyway. Not exactly. The whole point of Calvinism is that God makes the first move - unless God works in your heart you are unable and unwilling to repent. Blessing proceeds obedience, as my pastor likes to say.

And here I thought our annual pre-Christmas shleps to the arts center would be over after she grew up! Foolish me. (Wife! Wake me up when daughter comes on stage... or if I'm snoring!)

We were just in a store here called the Salt Table.  It's amazing.  We were at an open house with the owner and his wife at an open house last night.  He's going to be selling his wares on HSN soon.

One of the interesting items they sell are Himalayan salt shot glasses for doing shots of Tequila.  They also sell a habanero sugar, which, after we left, I thought would be interesting on cookies or brownies.

The chemical composition of Himalayan salt includes 95–96% sodium chloride, contaminated with 2–3% polyhalite and small amounts of ten other minerals. The pink color is due to iron oxide.

Salt melts at 800C so you can make your own but it won't be pink.  Toss it on the grill and cook with it.  Interesting but after a few cooking sessions the novelty wears off.

Then there's this from Luke (chapter 11) 11What father among you would hand his son a snake when he asks for a fish? 12 Or hand him a scorpion when he asks for an egg? 13 If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the holy Spirit to those who ask him? 218 Folk singers are not really Pajamaboy types. At least they didn't used to be. Pajamaboy doesn't leave the comforts of home ---mommy and daddy's home. He doesn't even know what life is like without AC, internet, and appletinis. Folkster hitched to the city from somewhere else and lives in a 5th floor walk-up and is always short of cash. What cash he does get is spent on booze and music, so he doesn't eat well. He considers things like AC and decent meals to be pathetically bourgeois ---which is why he doesn't work for them and why he needs a girlfriend with a J.O.B. That way he can hang out in HER cool apartment in the summer, snarfing ice cream and spaghetti, while writing songs decrying middle-class decadence.

I was rabidly anti-Semitic for weeks until the memoryof the movie wore off. Simon ("Wolowitz") Helberg had a moderately funny bit as a "hip" young rabbi. As a folkie, I'm obliged to see this, but I'm doing it under protest. The soundtrack performances are good, but I'm told they're studio, NOT the on-screen takes.

I have to disagree on Matt Damon in Saving Private Ryan. He could have been one of my soldiers. He (and Ted Danson, too, surprisingly) were spot on. Most of Tom Hanks' squad were caricatures, but Hanks was perfect. Should have got the third Oscar. The Omaha Beach landing bothered me for days, but the best scene was when he reported to the battalion CP to get his orders after losing most of his company -- he glanced around at one REMF shaving, another one making coffee, and I knew from his face exactly what was going through his head. 254 I would guess a " life coach" would be some smug, arrogant, person who has a lot of money that they didn't earn, telling you how you should lead your life, because they don't have one. Not to be confused with politicians.

256 Reminds me of my worthless neighbor whose personal assistant left me a message to find out how much subdivision dues were. Had my BIL call in an English accent (fake) and state he was my personal assistant leaving a message for her personal assistant. Jane, if she asks you for anything, tell her you'll have your personal assistant get back to her.

Yes.  However, when you're an unattractive little thing and you meet and unattractive rich man, and get him to marry you, you can pretty much tell your relatives and everyone else what to do.

How I wish my husband would wake the fuck up.  I've had enough.

258 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inside_Llewyn_Davis "The film focuses on one week in the life of a talented but struggling folk singer from Greenwich Village in 1961. Joel Coen has joked that the film does not really have a plot, however: 'That concerned us at one point; that's why we threw the cat in,' referring to a cat named Ulysses that is present throughout the film." So, yeah, skipping it.

Yes - the Coen Brothers have had a couple stinkers. But as a fanboy I'd pay to watch them paint a house. And will pay to watch this movie in a theater.

I...I...trust them. Ya' dig?

262 "That was my attitude going in, but the movie changed my mind completely. IMO, it was very, very good."

No. There was the usual Coen Bros. random weird shit, like the trapper in the bear suit, that made no sense.

And their best movie was "Fargo". I took my kids to see that one, because it was a parable, a very powerful one, on the subject of moral weakness, and the catastrophes it inflicts on the people around it.

By the way, predestination is the doctrine of Hell. The idea that somehow our moral choices don't matter, that one's destiny is written on one's forehead (as the Muslims put it), is what Satan preaches.

263 Talk about racism, insensitivity, and offensiveness. How can you call a team the "Ragin' Cajuns?" The horror!

264 Loved Fargo, and this True Grit wasn't bad at all. What I didn't get was Raising AZ, just thought that was stupid. To each his own.

265 I'm a longtime Bob Dylan fan, and the plot concerning an aspiring folk singer from the Midwest who arrives in Greenwich Village in 1961 definitely piques my interest. I've heard that the music in the movie is pretty good, and the song on the trailer is a passable imitation of Uncle Bob. It's got a cat, too? I'm there, man.

266 Jane, The government employees needed coaches? IRS employees need help. I heard something disturbing, more than usual about IRS today on one of the FNC Saturday morning shows that Cavuto usually hosts. I was half asleep, I went to take a nap. Government hires idiots? What a surprise.

269 I don't think you can "grow up to be a Calvinist." You were destined to it before you were born. As a child, you're a Calvinist who may or may not yet understand what you are and always have been. Kind of like a superpowered mutant.

Posted by: Little Miss Spellcheck at December 21, 2013 05:22 PM (a5ljo)

270 What kind of imbecile takes advice from a person who wasn't able to do anything more useful with their life than "life coach"?

Posted by: Little Miss Spellcheck at December 21, 2013 05:26 PM (a5ljo)

271 I can't believe with all the Calvinist talk, no one's brought up the old phrase "damned if you do, damned if you don't." There was a general souring of religion in the US in the late 1700s as mainstream religion turned more Calvinist. Lasted until the Second Great Awakening. That was a popular phrase to reject Calvinism - and, unfortunately, God.

272 Then I think there will be similarity of "Inside Llewyn Davis" to the angry blacomedy "Bob Roberts," which starred that nasty Tim Robbins, whose dad Gil Robbins (born Ruben, who'd have thought? I had to look that up) was an actual honest-to-god Greenwich Village folksinger (after he'd been a UCLA drum major and a USAF bandsman). Gil Robbins helped with the music in "Bob Roberts," which gave an eerie believability to an otherwise obnoxious assault on right-thinking, It posits a Dylanesque singer/social leader who's selling fascism.

273 There isn't a Coen Brothers film that isn't worth watching at least twice. Fargo and Lebowski are tops, followed by Barton Fink, The Man Who Wasn't There, and Miller's Crossing. Can't wait to see the new one.

274 I have been called, this year, a five-point Calvinist among other things. Thank you for the True Grit trailer and quote!

275 I thought Raising Arizona was hilarious. One of their movies that I think is underrated is The Hudsucker Proxy. It's about a big corporation in the 1950s. Those of a certain age, or who have actually worked for big corporations will probably best appreciate it.

Posted by: rickl at December 21, 2013 05:52 PM (sdi6R)

276 My favorite scene in The Hudsucker Proxy was the room where workers were toiling away on mechanical adding machines. They resembled galley slaves, and one shot showed them stretching off into infinity. Like I said, you have to be of a certain age to fully appreciate it.

277 Well, Presbyterianism might not come up here again for awhile, so I'd better take this opportunity to announce that my church finally voted to no longer be affiliated with the PCUSA, the weirdos that you always hear about condemning Israel and stuff. So that's nice.

278 Its possible that this latest Coen film is like Barton Fink, which was terrific but very weird and dark. Fink was a chump loser idiot, but in an entertaining way.

279 267 the song on the trailer is a passable imitation of Uncle Bob. Posted by: rickl at December 21, 2013 09:15 PM (sdi6R) Upon further investigation, that actually is Bob. Color me embarrassed.

280 I'm a big John Wane fan, but the Coen bros. version is about a bajillion times better.  Mostly due to it's extreme lack of Glen Campbell, but also because it actually develops the tough character of Mattie Ross like the book does.  The '69 version dresses her out like some whiny assed tag along.  The book is one of those very well written potato-chip novels that you just can't put down, even if you've seen one or both films.  In it, Rooster is much more entertaining than either Wayne or whats-his-name could manage.  Best line: "I do not know this man."

Posted by: Oleander Salad at December 21, 2013 07:31 PM (/KeTB)

281 i liked both Grits. Matt Damon and the young girl were much better than Glen Campbell and whats her name.the cinematography was exquisite in the new one, but Jeff Bridges however good is no Wayne. Also some of the minor roles just imitated the original i.e. the guy who did a Struther Martin imitation. So while unlike other remakes it didn't devolve into pc crap , I left the theatre enjoying it but wondered what was the point of remaking it.

Better than:

Fargo
Raising Arizona

284 Mattie is untempered "Justice" in seeking an "eye for an eye", Rooster is Mercy as he becomes Maddie's protector on her journey of retribution, I understand Maddie but admire Rooster. Maddie get's bit by the "Serpent" and Rooster saves his soul. Dig a little deeper Calvinists.

285 Matti Ross grew up and became Ann Barnhardt, just sayin'. The trailer worked for me - I want to see if bad things happen to the hipster douche.
