— Open Blogger Got some rusty stuff you need to get cleaned up and put back into service? You've probably tried naval jelly, wire brushes, etc. They all require work, or are kinda toxic/caustic.
There is another way -- Evapo-Rust made by Daubert Cromwell.
This stuff flat out works. The claims made for it are accurate. It is non-toxic. I've dumped the spent stuff out on some Aloe plants and it didn't bother them one bit.
Eco-Friendly
Wallet Friendly
How does it work -- freaking SCIENCE baby. It uses chemical chelation. If you watched a few episodes of House, you probably remember that term being tossed around as a treatment for various metal poisonings -- same idea here. Evapo-Rust hooks onto the bad shit and floats it away.
Obviously, Evapo-Rust is a very economic collapse friendly product. Getting spares for rusted shit isn't gonna be easy when we go all Mad Max and people are gonna have to make due with what they got or can scrounge up. Laying in a few gallons of this stuff may be as valuable as stocking up on guns, ammo, surgical supplies, and duct tape.
The only place I've found locally that has it is Harbor Freight.

I wished I'd know about that stuff when I was running machine shops.
Another good product that I've used for years is Shaklee's Basic H. It's a surfactant that leaves no residue. It's kinda pricey, but I bought a gallon back in '06 and still have about 2/3 of it left. Great for cleaning potable water containers and the like.

US Men's Championship will be on the NBC Sports Network at 4 p.m. eastern.
I'm trying to figure out if TSN will have matches available online after they're over, or if they're going to restrict it to Canadians only. If it's the latter, I'll be in despair.

Jeb Bush? Last name might be a deal breaker with a lotta people in this country at this time.
Policies? Comparing yourself to LBJ might not be the smoothest move he could talk about to endear himself to a good part of the Party. But, you know, it's just crazy enough to screw up the primaries again in 2016.
Face it, even though the economy is staggering now and will very possibly be worse in 2016, the taint that the MSM splashes on the Republicans will still be sufficient for Hillary, Rahm or Biden to get elected.

The part needs to soak in it for a day or two, so it needs to be of dunkable size. For a car, you're probably better off sand blasting.

Simple, cheap way to remove rust: buy Barkeeper's Friend. It's about $3 a container. Prepare a paste of it, put it on the rusted object, place object in the sun.
Barkeeper's Friend is essentially pure sodium oxalate, and it too chelates Fe(III) to produce the tris chelate [Fe(ox)3)3-, which in turn decomposes photochemically in sunlight to produce Fe(II) and CO2 (the ferrioxalate actinometer, used to measure integrated light intensities in photochemistry).
(Btw, as indicated on the package, sodium oxalate is toxic, but not to worry. It's the sodium salt of oxalic acid, which is found most prominently in ... spinach. Just as you shouldn't eat a great deal of spinach, don't eat Barkeeper's Friend either, and you'll be fine.)

If your question is to me, the answer is yes. Oxalic acid leaves a clean iron surface.
Naval jelly is phosphoric acid, which leaves a surface layer of ferric phosphate, which is insoluble in water. Hence the iron doesn't need painting.

Not sealed, but they say the surface will have a film good enough for a couple of weeks of rust prevention. This stuff is water based.
The good thin about it is it will get into some pretty small areas and can clean up some finely machined surfaces. I've used it on rusted model airplane engine pistons and cylinders and got them running again.
Posted by: @PurpAv at February 16, 2013 01:19 PM (1rU+d)
If you have vast quantities of rusty, greasy hardware, like nuts, bolts, nails and the like, dump about a five-gallon bucket of them into a standard cement mixer along with enough water to immerse them fully, and about a half-pound of caustic soda (lye). Tumble them in the cement mixer for about an hour, pour off the now nasty-looking caustic solution (which can be reused) and rinse with several changes of fresh water. Spread some old sheets out on a table in the sunshine, and strew the cleaned parts out on the cloth to dry and to be sorted. Sitting in the sunshine, sorting parts, and sipping on a beer is pleasant way to spend the afternoon, too.
A couple of caveats: this stuff will clean aluminum and brass parts very well, but it will also try to dissolve them, so it should not be used on parts with critical dimensions. Also there may be a risk of hydrogen embrittlement of steel parts, so one should probably not use it for highly-stressed bolts like suspension-mounting bolts or connecting rod cap screws.
Actually, the Evapo-Rust sounds like a good product, and I plan to buy some.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at February 16, 2013 02:16 PM (673KB)
Oxalic acid works, sometimes. YMMV

When I say brighten I mean like new with no scrubbing. Reduce it 20% or so after testing a sample. Apply using a cheap blond natural fiber bristle "chip" brush. Duct tape the brush to the end of a broomstick if need be.
Don't breath the fumes ( don't stick your face next to the application surface-heh), use outdoors and wear gloves and face splash protection gear. I've used this stuff a lot, just be careful.
Chemical, agricultural and ranch distributor stores sell it.
Posted by: 13times at February 16, 2013 02:42 PM (h6XiD)
Hydrofluoric acid is amazing, but as a chemist I don't recommend it for non-chemists. HF is volatile and toxic as all hell, and if concentrated (probably not the stuff they sell commercially), causes excruciating burns (especially under finger nails).
If you want to be truly amazed, try it on glassware, which will come out unbelievably clean. HF dissolves glass (usually fairly slowly), and will even remove the fiducial markings on, e.g., measuring cups. They just float right off (making the cups useless, obviously). Amazing.

Since it is an organic material, you are likely to get two or fewer effective sessions out of it since the active ingredient is removed from use (chelated!) and eaten quickly by the bacteria and/or other life that infects it as soon as you open the container. I never got anywhere near the capacity out of a gallon that is claimed by the maker even at first use.
Then there is old fashioned vat of molasses, slow, but the bacterial infections it acquires probably helps the derusting process.
