A very cursory glance at DOOM
— Monty

DOOOOM

I expended most of my good DOOM ammo last week plugging holes in the leaky tub we call Ace of Spades HQ, so today I can only bring the dregs from the grog barrel. Gather 'round, me hearties, and hark ye to the tale of this sad buccaneer!

ObamaCare: Another day, another colossal failure. I haven't watched TV in weeks - this ObamaCare debacle has provided more entertainment value than any TV show I can think of. Watching Democrats squirm, point fingers, deny responsibility, and blame everything on a recalcitrant GOP has been...what's the word? Delicious.

Italy: a cautionary tale for America. But really, the same could be said for France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, or England. Some of the problem is a spiritual vacuum -- Europeans don’t believe in God any more, and nothing much has come in to fill the void. Socialism, as a creed, doesn’t do much to stiffen the spine or compel one to look to the future with a hopeful eye. Also, on the point about garbage not getting picked up in Rome -- that’s how you know the Republic is falling. Never mind the political shenanigans or national debt; to gauge the health of a country, look at the utilities. Is the power on? Do the streetlights work? Does the trash get picked up? Is local law enforcement reliable and effective? The fall of (ancient) Rome was once described as “the death of comfort” as everyday comforts that Romans had grown used to withered away because the government lost the ability to keep things running.

Detroit declares war on math, loses.

Speaking of Motown, you can add a new chorus of voices in Detroit to those who are shocked, shocked, that His Majesty the King may have been lying about how wonderful this ObamaCare program was going to be.

Illinois governor Pat Quinn: "You know what we need to give our already-overpaid public sector workforce? Another $100 million! Dig deep, peasants citizens!"

30 The fall of (ancient) Rome was once described as the death of comfort as everyday comforts that Romans had grown used to withered away because the government lost the ability to keep things running.

That is not the belief of current historians.  The last book that I got from the library on that said the first thing that happened was they lost the wheat fields in Northern Africa to the Visigoths (or it may have been the vandals).  After that they were unable to adequately feed the citizens of Rome or pay the Army.

This resulted in the empire breaking up into a lot of separate city States each run by a local Bishop.  Later the vandals invaded Rome after they were no longer able to pay them to stay out.

But all of those separate city-States remained and later became the countries of Europe during the middle ages.

31 David Axelrod offered a slightly different promise about Obamacare than has the president: While that president has repeatedly said, “If you like your plan, you can keep it,” Axelrod on Monday told MSNBC that “most” will be able to stick with their plan. “Most people are going to keep their own plan,” Axelrod said in a discussion with Senator Tom Coburn (R., Okla.). “The majority of people in this country — the vast majority of people in this country — are keeping their plan.” Axelrod’s rephrased guarantee comes as reports of millions of Americans losing their healthcare plans are rolling in. Last week, Senator Ron Johnson (R., Wis.) announced he would introduce the “If You Like Your Health Plan, You Can Keep it Act,” which would allow people to keep their current plan regardless of the mandates of Obamacare. No less and less people are going to be able to keep their plans you lying cock sucker prick bastard

Only for the urban-dwelling upper class. For the majority of folks, things went on much the same - might even have improved a bit.

Re; Vandals,

Interestingly enough, some of the most die-hard supporters of Rome during the twilight of the Western Empire were German immigrants or descendants of German immigrants.

Vandals. The Vandals and the Visigoths had very different attitudes towards the Empire - The Visigoths fled into the empire as a refuge from the Huns, but when they were massively mistreated they revolted so successfully that they were able to force the Romans to allow them to settle as a distinct, self-governing polity within the borders of the empire. Thereafter they fought both for and against the Romans, trying to establish for themselves a place within the empire, but in the process massively destabilizing it. The Vandals came later, and were much more interested in just looting things than working with the Roman state.

It is hard not to sympathize with the Visigoths, but very  hard to like the Vandals.

I started to feel the effects of liberalism during the Cliton years, good and hard. When NAFTA  passed and China  got MFN status, I started having  trouble finding work. It was that administration that decided we were going to turn into a service-oriented economy.

I've  been funemployed for six years now.  My 22/yo truck isn't running and now I have to get B'Gal's  car's   transmission fixed  and I have no  money to do either  one.

50 Whatever. I couldn't care less about the asswipes in NY/NJ. The problem is that our politicians, who want to spend more and more money, print more and more money, are only taking money away from the poor and middle class. Affordable housing is out of reach for a huge percentage of the population. ObamaCare just moved it even further away. But you know where you can find cheap land? Like the old Chris Farley line about 'living in a van down by the river' -- flood plains are cheap. Because they flood. With regularity. So I don't blame the people too much who decide, for economic reasons, to live there.

Dedication ceremonies are scheduled Monday at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland for the first national monument honoring war dogs that died in service to the U.S. The U.S. Military Working Dog Teams National Monument will be at the same base where the animals are also treated when wounded. The main granite pedestal features the bronze image of a handler and the U.S. military’s four main working dog breeds — a Doberman, a German shepherd, a Labrador retriever and a Belgian Malinois.

SAN ANTONIO — Some four-footed military heroes will be honored at a Texas installation where many of the animals are trained.

I have a story.  Not a DOOM! one, but it ties in, since it's a general "people suck" story.

Mrs P. was driving home from work last week when a little Scottie-mix puppy ran out in front of her.  She stopped.  It was a happy, friendly dog, but had no tags, just a collar.  She called the police and was told to bring the dog to a local vet where lost animals were brought.  So she did (she told me later the poor pup looked so sad at being left, she wanted to take him).

Flyers and electronic notices go up, but no answer.  It looks like nobody will claim the pup, but - good news - a friend of Mrs P's whose dog is dying wants the Scottie as a transition dog.  So he will have a happy home.

Why do people suck?  Because the vet told Mrs P that, many times, families who don't want their pets anymore will remove the tags and drop them off in the parking lot of the nearest mall before driving away.  So the animals will starve or get hit by cars.

People suck.  "Image of God," my ass.

I like to eat them and want to cut them open in the name of knowledge. And yet, it still confuses me the way some people act with regards to animals. I blame moral confusion regarding our relationship to animals. But it seems to me putting the dog down should be a preferable alternative to abandoning it. (Not *the* preferable alternative, but *a* preferable, obviously giving it away is probably top of the list.)

82 Liberals never feel the pain of their insane policies because the feds are always there to bail them out.  Detroit has been getting federal big dollars for decades and that is why they are still hanging on.

Every major city in the US is getting millions of federal dollars so the liberals don't feel the pain there.

And it wasn't always that way.  I remember years ago NYC was looking for a bailout.  They did not get one because everyone in Congress (except a few) agreed that the feds bailing out a city was unconsitutional.

So what has changed since then?  Decades of unconstitutional socialism on every score.  Decades of assistance for mass transit robbed from gas taxes.

And public who has grown use to free shit.

On the library, a letter to the editor of the local paper had a lady bemoaning the fact that she cannot go to the local library for free and you know she has CHILDREN!!!!. She could in the town she had moved from. Someone pointed out to her, that the area of the county she is living in is unincorporated and she pays no taxes into the library. The cost to join the library for her would be something like 150 a year. I'm betting she is not a library member as of yet.

Bill Whittle gave an excellent speech about this in Toronto, it's called "In defense of western civilization" and is available on Youtube. He posits that western civilization is the end result of 3 things: Judeo-Christain religion, which gave us the concept of monotheism which creates the idea of absolute right and wrong and hence virtue (like a great big real life game of Civilization), Greco-Roman philosophy, which fostered science, the idea that things follow natural laws which can be understood and manipulated for our benefit, and Anglo-Saxon rule of law, which states that everyone must follow the same rules, people are not exempt from the law because of their status. It's a brilliant talk, well worth listening to if you have an hour and a half to spare.

So, California, New York, and New Jersey are bleeding liberals, who are moving on to f--k up Colorado, Arizona, North Carolina, and Florida. OK, but liberals are leaving but CA, NY, and NJ aren't getting any more conservative; in fact they seem to get even more liberal as liberals flee. So, where are conservatives disappearing to?

The reason they don't get repaired is because every attempt to remove whatever aspect of the societal construct which is non-functional or even detrimental to the overall system, will be opposed by it's own constituency group which wanted it in the first place.

"Charmed" has only been off the air since 2006, but according to some buzz from the television world, CBS TV studios is planning one of those pesky, maybe-okay "reimaginings" of the WB series that starred Alyssa Milano, Shannen Doherty, Holly Marie Combs, and Rose McGowan.

Accord to Vulture, the new Charmed will be developed by Party of Five co-creator Chris Keyser and writing partner Sydney Sidner.

Hey, MWR, did you see the story over the weekend about the dimwit "graphic designer" who wants to replace all 57 state flags?  He says our current flags don't show unity and we should fly banners that show we're all one nation.  It was in Sunday's Lawrence Eagle-Tribune, but I can't link.

The NH flag was a red rectangle with a  thin  vertical blue rectangle on the left, within which was a single white star.

124 Well, iterations of it, for sure. I'm not going to get into a dispute regarding which denomination is superior.

Sorry for the confusion -  denominational differences are not what I meant.  What I meant were that religions other than those based on Judeo-Christian teachings.  For instance, adherence to Islam does not produce a flourishing civilization.  Or Hinduism.  Or similar "isms".

And the states they move into are also getting more liberal.

So, where are conservatives disappearing to?

You forgot to net in immigration to the Blue states.  The renewable resource that keeps the states liberal.

One problem is that liberals tend to be fairly mobile, and when things go south in their current living situation, they move to greener pastures and eventually fuck things up there

I spent the weekend watching Seasons 1 and 2 of The Walking Dead on Netflix.  Seems the libs and zombies are similar in this regard.

Judeo-Christian religion was the door to our success.

I didn't see that, MP4, and good thing, too.   My response would have been...   visceral  and vulgar.

It's attitude.   Conservatives believe   there's more to life than politics.   Leftists believe politics IS life.  And once the lefties get into positions of power -- bureaucratic and legislative -- they    never give it up.   By the time we conservatives realize what's happened, our homes have been taken over by blue state assholes.

And we can't move away!   The blue state hellholes these bastards   have abandoned   never change.   See Detroit -- they're still grasping at impossible straws, desperate to sustain their unsustainable    socialist model instead of goign through the painful changes that might inspire people to move back there and set it back on the path to a thriving future.

The places conservatives can    run to are growing smaller and smaller by the day.

I think one reason is that the political establishment that grew off the backs of those liberals entrenched itself, making it very difficult to revert. Then there is the illegal immigration and vote fraud thing... Actually, I would also add that the ranks of liberals never truly shrinks due to the public school system....

139 "Never mind the political shenanigans or national debt; to gauge the health of a country, look at the utilities. Is the power on? Do the streetlights work? Does the trash get picked up? Is local law enforcement reliable and effective?"

This is one of the more obvious differences between California and Texas.

You had better have a good GPS when driving around in southern California because all the highway traffic signs are covered with graffiti even though they are surrounded with razor wire.  You can't claim that the difference is due to different demographics because there are plenty of Mexicans in Texas.  The difference is that in Texas, people who spray paint on highway signs are arrested and put in jail.

The other differences such as high taxes and oppressive regulations, high energy costs, unsustainable public obligations and poor performing schools are all there in California but they are not quite as obvious.

Love that cat.

Obama just sent Detroit $300M. He may as well have pissed on it and flushed it down the toilet. This after he swore that there would be no federal bailout.

Why should the citizens of Podunck pay for the corruption and illegal union sweat-heart deals in Detroit?

Point of order - Teh SCOAMT did piss on and flush that $300M.
