Ace 2005 flashback - Blogs/new media
— Purple Avenger

This old 2005 vintage Ace post is worth a re-read.

The OSM notion of which Ace wrote back in 2005 morphed into something else with the rise of blogs, Breitbart, etc, but it does seem like alt-media has gotten way more respect and ad dollars since 2005, and has seen a number of its personalities break into old-media gaining wider audience (ex. Malkin)

The right side of alt-media was respected enough that Axlerod sent swarms of trolls out to attack it. When you took fire from the Whitehouse itself, you were over the target. Trolls, annoying as they are, mean you're HAVING AN EFFECT. You ARE worth attacking. They validate you.

The MSM and politicians have always dismissed new-media as a bunch of yappy ankle biters, but now, in 2013, they're doing it with pretty bloody ankles.

Alternative commentary is still our stock in trade, but original reporting is happening (ex Zombie, shutdown theater, etc). People are out there digging deep into things that never got dug into before - dry IG reports, and all manner of other government documents that were selectively filtered by old-media previously. Leakage of previously sequestered stories has risen from a trickle to a small but steady stream.

We're still evolving daily. Its been a wild ride. It promises to get wilder.

10 Not only have some personalities made the jump from blog to face time news, but a substantial portion of what makes news coverage begins as blog coverage of events. This is especially true in nearly every issue brought onto face time news that has to do with challenging 'the narrative' of the left. Not much, if any, of that coverage ever begins with standard issue "journalists".

14 One of my major gripes with the big money blogs on the right is they still don't do any independent investigative reporting. There's no reason that a Townhall or The Blaze couldn't do some of the things a Sharyl Attkisson is doing.

Posted by: lowandslow at November 02, 2013 01:31 PM (IV4od)

15 The media and culture war really are the most important thing. As Breitbart would say, politics is downstream of culture. And, long term, it's probably not much more complicated than: 1) Give money and attention to your friends 2) Don't give money or attention to your enemies No need to be all hair-shirt about it. But, especially when you have a choice, support your friends and punish your enemies. And in the media world, ignoring your enemies is a form of punishment.

22 The more people who make a living in conservative media the better. It's tough though. Websites and magazines aren't exactly cash cows. My understanding is most conservative magazines survive off donor money, not subscription or ad revenue.

30 I'll probably get stoned for saying it but, Breitbart.com has been a real disappointment since Andrew died.  You don't see anything of any relevance coming from them anymore. Leave the investigative stuff out of it, the opinion writing coming from them now is really sub-par.

40 That's one thing I admire about Beck. He's built more of an alt-media infrastructure than most other right-wing pundits combined. Malkin is another. Original reporting is expensive, though. I really hope BlazeTV gets on more cable channels (calling and asking for it is the best way to get that to happen) cause that's a revenue stream that can fund original reporting. That's how FoxNews can afford it. Talk radio makes a few hosts rich -- and I love Rush, no knock on him -- but there isn't the revenue to support much infrastructure. We are still mostly dependent on leftists for original news and then we have lots of right-wing pundits who use the news as fodder and put their own spin and interpretation on it. But the news always starts with a leftist slant to start with, so half the work is just unslanting the news.

61 "Original reporting is expensive"

I look at the obviously blotted payrolls of some of the blogs and websites and wonder if they couldn't use their money more wisely. Take one like NRO, granted the National Review has been strictly opinion but in this day and age is having probably ten staff writer plus dozens more freelance writers writing the same shit day in day out the best use of resources?

Posted by: lowandslow at November 02, 2013 01:51 PM (IV4od)

62 I'd also really a love a non-leftist source for sports news. Hate that me watching ESPN makes strident left-wingers like Kornheiser and Wilbon rich. I just want a half hour show that summarizes the sports news of the day in a semi-entertaining way - that isn't entirely run by hard-core leftists.

74 Don't forget, original reporting, while pricy, is also intensely time consuming.

A small blogger could do it, but it could take weeks/months of research, many miles driven accessing records not on the internet, doing interviews, etc just to produce a single blog post about something substantial.

Yon did it, and turned a few bucks off it, but even he had to have some msm entities backing him for the creds that got him embed gigs.

Have you noticed that since Obama took over, embed reporting has kinda tapered off?

118 I think we should do more in the way of quiet boycotting. Yeah, I know it's just not like us to politicize everything, but maybe we should pay more attention to where we spend money. As someone above said ---I'm too lazy to look --- this doesn't have to be a hairshirt thing. Where the Left holds a monopoly (TV sports, e.g.,) boycotting would really be rough. There may be a movie with a truly nasty moonbat in it that you otherwise are dying to see. But there are many cases where you have choices, where it doesn't hurt you to boycott. I've got a conservative friend who for AGES had Progressive insurance. I ragged on him all the time for it and he finally changed --- and feels good about it.

141 74 Don't forget, original reporting, while pricy, is also intensely time consuming. Posted by: Purp at November 02, 2013 06:00 PM (4tK7k) Stacy McCain still does it the old fashion way, I expect that he has a hat that says "Press". Look what it got him though, he had to move his entire family in the face of credible threats from he who shall not be named and I just dunno how he's affording his legal bill against prog harassers. He still does it though, wearing out the show leather and reporting as much as anything, not just writing commentary. Last of a dying breed.

Video is high tech bandwidth, low information bandwidth.  Its a very inefficient way to convey information.  A simple list of links like the morning news dump here is way faster to scan and lets you pick/choose like a Chinese menu

157 Checking in really quick, then back to Saturday things.

I'm liking the vintage posts! I've mentioned this before, but it would be wonderful if there was a format where one could collect many of Ace's classic posts and compile them into one condensed body of work...I think it rhymes with "look"? Maybe release it next year on the anniversary of the blog as part o the celebrations? I would totes buy such a thing thru the Amazon portal, if such a thing existed. Would be fun to put the posts, as is being done here, into context and see how things differed or mimicked what Ace posted or predicted. Just a thought!

"Always be branding" is the new "always be closing," Ace. But I constantly have marketing on the brain, so take or ignore my suggestion as desired.

165 Good video is very labor intensive to produce.  You gotta edit the shit out of the raw footage to keep people's eyes from glazing over.
