— Ace 1. Hey remember when you said that Obamacare was going to work great, and then, when people asked you how it actually worked, you sort of implied they were stupid for not knowing, and yet you never provided any evidence that you had any idea of how it was supposed to work yourself? Yeah, you were wrong to do that.
2. Remember when you called me crazy for saying Obama wanted to "spread the wealth around," based on not a scrap of evidence except for Obama himself saying he wanted to spread the wealth around? Yeah, there's a NYT article that says that Obamacare is fundamentally a redistributive program -- which means it "spreads the wealth around." Yeah you were wrong on that, too.
3. Remember when you said that it was only "REPUBLICAN LIES!!111!!" that Obama's "if you like your plan, you can keep your plan" promise was itself a lie? I hate to keep coming back to this point, but you were way wrong on that one too.
4. Remember the "if you like your doctor" pledge? Yeah I feel like a broken record here, but you were wrong.
5. Remember when you gleefully, giddily declared the end of the Republican Party and a new era of Proud Progressive dominance? Yeah, the current political Big Story is whether or not Obamacare will wind up discrediting progressivism for just an election cycle or two, or as much as a generation. It looks like you were wrong about that.
6. Remember when you were so confident, arrogant, snotty, sneering, and dismissive about legitimate and informed concerns about Obamacare? You were wrong. And you weren't just wrong on the facts, but you were wrong on a human level. You very nearly screamed your ignorant opinions and shouted down dissent. You sneered at people as ignorant who actually knew more than you did, and you indulged in entirely-unwarranted moral preening about your alleged concern for the poor. Despite the fact that you never do anything to actually aid the poor. Apparently shouting at relatives is your idea of "charity."
Yeah you were wrong. You are wrong.
I know you won't apologize, but at least keep your stupid mouth shut this year and let us all digest in peace.

Now that you realize your insurance was cancelled and your new insurance premiums, deductibles, and copays have increased, you're complaining -- because while you like declaring your desire to help the poor, you don't want to be the actual one who pays more in order to help the poor. If I'm not wrong, isn't it written into the law that, to get the subsidy, you HAVE to go through the "marketplace?" You can go through insurers anyway, you just don't get the subsidy.
So is this yet another executive power grab without the power of law behind it?

He launched after that constantly about the "if it saves only one life" thing and wanted to ban everything which they did. I finally got tired of it and offered him a sane sensible solution that would save tens of thousands of lives a year.
Install alcohol inhibitors in every single vehicle in America. Presto! it saves tons of lives. "It sure is, and people are suffering without healthcare. The ACA helps them get affordable insurance!"
"How much do you make an hour?"
"Why does that matter?"
"Everyone is paid according to their skills and their experience. It's the monetization of the time they've spent from their life to gain the skills and experience. I want to know what the market thinks your time is worth."
"What is YOURS worth?"
"Apparently plenty, since you feel the need to have others steal some of it for your own political goals."
"That's bullshit! It's taxes, and we pay them to keep society running."
"Is that so? Let's say I make $50, but your compulsory charity makes me give up $20 of that to be given to someone else. That makes my life worth less. That's making my skills and experience worth less. It's demeaning and antagonistic, not to mention morally corrupt. You're actually taking the abstracted form of my life, and giving it to someone else. You couldn't be doing me a deeper moral harm if you literally stripped the years from my life to keep someone else young. You're an honest-to-God vampire. What gives you the right to use the government as the tool to do that, just so you don't have to give up $10 of your own for your own fucking cause?"
"You use the infrastructure too."
"And I pay for it with gas taxes, utility taxes, FCC taxes, sales taxes. The people you're giving my $20 to are using MY LIFE to pay for that shit. So me, and people like me, are paying for all of it. They're literally taking my life as a proxy for their own wasted potential, because you voted to let them do it."

Here's my hat. I made sure to sweat on it A LOT, so it's nice and salty. Enjoy.

Libtards have been parroting the subsidy line to me for weeks now. (Long story.)
I fail to see how jacking up someone's prices, then giving them a government handout to compensate (yes I know it doesn't come anywhere near compensation, bear with me here.)
Anyway, I fail to see how that is useful for anything but making more government cheese addicted voters.
I said that once to a libtard and they abandoned the "subsidy" line of argument entirely. Just fucking conceded the battlefield on it.
After that it was pretty much open season on every other point they made.

The whole family in general is pretty rock-solid conservative. It was just my granddad's eldest daughter (my aunt) decided to be a hippie, married a bearded Marxist from Dartmouth born with a silver spoon, and has spent a lifetime indulging in Leftist pap, calling me a racist as they're ever moving into whiter and more insulated neighborhoods. Pricks all of em, they're gonna get what's coming, and this year, I doubt my grandparents and mom will plead with me to hold back on them.

If you are not eligible for the subsidies (if you're white then you're not) and don't want your identity stolen, you don't HAVE to deal with the website at all. As far as I understand it, you have ALWAYS had the option of avoiding the website and dealing directly with insurers.

Dumb. But expected from you, Burt.
Anyway, as it happens I'm probably not technically the most conservative person in my immediate family of longtime Washingtonians. That would be my mom, a Ph.D scientist who nevertheless combines public fame (in her particular discipline) with a Catholic Missouri/Indiana country farmgirl's basic outlook on life. (My dad is an upstate NY'er, whose politics are essentially conservative but ultimately driven more by his burning desire to see the Democrats lose more than wanting the Republicans to win per se.) My brother rebels against the rest of our right-wing groupthink by being a casual liberal, but I doubt he thinks too much about it.
My gay uncle, however, is truly a committed left-winger, and me and him get into a political argument pretty much every Thanksgiving/Christmas/get-together, even (especially!) when Mrs. Jeff B. is around to get roped in. It's tons of fun because let's not kid ourselves, I win every single time on points, regardless

You're right -- they're not a SUBSTITUTE, because that word suggests that sweet potatoes and your normal 'ghetto' potatoes are of identical quality. Which of course they're not. Every human being capable of taste and discernment already knows full-fucking-well that sweet potatoes are vastly superior to the ghetto Irish-trash "potato of poors" that you sadly fetishize.
One of the virtues of Thanksgiving is that it's a rare opportunity for we Americans to briefly acknowledge that yes, sweet potatoes really ARE the Master Race Tuber.

Any relative of mine (and I unfortunately do have some hard-core obammy fans that I have to tolerate at family gatherings) who would pull that shit at a family gathering would be physically escorted out of my home, and that would be the last time there would be any kind of contact between us.
They're already at the wedding/funeral/holiday stage of contact with us, mostly "hi" and "bye". And that's just because of civility on my part.
But they cross a line and start talking their leftist politics, and they will be gone, permanently.
All those things you said above, they are wasted words on people from the left. They are unapologetic ideologues who can never be wrong. Kick their asses out of your home instead of wasting your breath.

Nah. Just ask them to explain Obamacare to you. You'll find they have no idea. Ask them how exactly was Obamacare supposed to provide more medical care to more people for less money? What exactly is the mechanism by which our costs will decrease? If more people are going to get more medical care, won't we need more doctors and hospitals? Where will they come from? What parts of the law is it okay for Obama to ignore? What parts must he obey? Does his ability to ignore the law as written impact people's willingness to abide by the law themselves? If insurnace were cheap, wouldn't everybody have it? So isn't the problem of the uninsured all about insurance costs? How does Obamacare lower costs? If it costs less to pay the fine than get health insurance via Obamacare, won't anybody that's healthy simply opt to pay the fine? Given we can't be turned down for pre-existing conditions, why won't people just wait to get sick then buy gold plated insurance? What do we do if the website never works right?
You run this series of questions the right way, calmly, questioning, like "My stupid brain is just trying to understand, teach me oh wise one". Trust me, the result is hysterical to watch.
