Ace of Spades' Talking Points for Talking With Your Family About Obamacare This Thanksgiving
— Ace

1. Hey remember when you said that Obamacare was going to work great, and then, when people asked you how it actually worked, you sort of implied they were stupid for not knowing, and yet you never provided any evidence that you had any idea of how it was supposed to work yourself? Yeah, you were wrong to do that.

2. Remember when you called me crazy for saying Obama wanted to "spread the wealth around," based on not a scrap of evidence except for Obama himself saying he wanted to spread the wealth around? Yeah, there's a NYT article that says that Obamacare is fundamentally a redistributive program -- which means it "spreads the wealth around." Yeah you were wrong on that, too.

3. Remember when you said that it was only "REPUBLICAN LIES!!111!!" that Obama's "if you like your plan, you can keep your plan" promise was itself a lie? I hate to keep coming back to this point, but you were way wrong on that one too.

4. Remember the "if you like your doctor" pledge? Yeah I feel like a broken record here, but you were wrong.

5. Remember when you gleefully, giddily declared the end of the Republican Party and a new era of Proud Progressive dominance? Yeah, the current political Big Story is whether or not Obamacare will wind up discrediting progressivism for just an election cycle or two, or as much as a generation. It looks like you were wrong about that.

6. Remember when you were so confident, arrogant, snotty, sneering, and dismissive about legitimate and informed concerns about Obamacare? You were wrong. And you weren't just wrong on the facts, but you were wrong on a human level. You very nearly screamed your ignorant opinions and shouted down dissent. You sneered at people as ignorant who actually knew more than you did, and you indulged in entirely-unwarranted moral preening about your alleged concern for the poor. Despite the fact that you never do anything to actually aid the poor. Apparently shouting at relatives is your idea of "charity."

Yeah you were wrong. You are wrong.

I know you won't apologize, but at least keep your stupid mouth shut this year and let us all digest in peace.

Completely, sweepingly, categorically, catastrophically wrong.  About all of it.

But I'm a racist for pointing that out.

It doesn't bother me that she disagrees with my politics or that she enthusiastically promotes her own. With the other, he wants to talk pretty much nothing BUT politics, but it's always over lots of drinks and each time he comes back after another asswhipping with "Well, what about THIS?" topic, to which we have more drinks while I beat him about the head and shoulders. Great fun for everyone. I think there are some quality people who hold these beliefs not on an intellectual level, but because they've been indoctrinated to believe that they're responsible to care for everyone, especially the "less fortunate." Fortunately, Lord Rainbowshanks has done more than William F. Buckley to educate the populace that the Less Fortunate don't give a fuck about YOU, they just want what's in your pockets.

Same here.   If I don't want to put up with  the leftist harangue, I hold up my hand and tell them to walk away  quietly.  Anyone who's  in favor of destroying my country will never be a friend of mine, period.

And that also means a weekly housecleaning of FB.

Install alcohol inhibitors in every single vehicle in America.  Presto!  it saves tons of lives.  He got pissed because he drinks and drives and said I was depriving him of his god given right to drive and his right to privacy....etc.  It took a few days but he actually thought about it sort of apologized to me.

"It sure is, and people are suffering without healthcare.  The ACA helps them get affordable insurance!"

"Everyone is paid according to their skills and their experience.  It's the monetization of the time they've spent from their life to gain the skills and experience. I want to know what the market thinks your time is worth."

"What is YOURS worth?"

"Apparently plenty, since you feel the need to have others steal some of it for your own political goals."

"That's bullshit!  It's taxes, and we pay them to keep society running."

"Is that so?  Let's say I make $50, but your compulsory charity makes me give up $20 of that to be given to someone else. That makes my life worth less. That's making my skills and experience worth less.  It's demeaning and antagonistic, not to mention morally corrupt. You're actually taking the abstracted form of my life, and giving it to someone else.  You couldn't be doing me a deeper moral harm if you literally stripped the years from my life to keep someone else young.   You're an honest-to-God vampire. What gives you the right to use the government as the tool to do that, just so you don't have to give up $10 of your own for your own fucking cause?"

"You use the infrastructure too."

"And I pay for it with gas taxes, utility taxes, FCC taxes, sales taxes.  The people you're giving my $20 to are using MY LIFE to pay for that shit.  So me, and people like me, are paying for all of it.  They're literally taking my life as a proxy for their own wasted potential, because you voted to let them do it."

129 Christmas 2009 I spent at my millionaire Marxist relatives home in RI. Of course, Obamacare was a hot topic as it had just been rammed through the Senate during an after midnight vote the night before. After voicing my many objections over a new welfare program, piling new debt on top of the already unpayable old debt, a government bureaucracy getting involved in your personal medical decisions, etc., my Ivy League graduate cousin nodded along the whole time while listening. When I finished, he replied, "honestly, it sounds to me like your only real objection is that it wasn't passed by a white president."

Fuckers are going to be at my mom's for Thanksgiving. I can guarantee they will not try to pull this OFA bullshit around me, rather they're probably praying to get through the evening without any mention of politics. I however plan to rub their noses in the mess they've made repeatedly and often.

But, especially for you guys who must face the horror of  liberal relatives, I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving.

Libtards have been parroting the subsidy line to me for weeks now. (Long story.)

I fail to see how jacking up someone's prices, then giving them a government handout to compensate (yes I know it doesn't come anywhere near compensation, bear with me here.)
Anyway, I fail to see how that is useful for anything but making more government cheese addicted voters.

I said that once to a libtard and they abandoned the "subsidy" line of argument entirely. Just fucking conceded the battlefield on it.
After that it was pretty much open season on every other point they made.

The whole family in general is pretty rock-solid conservative. It was just my granddad's eldest daughter (my aunt) decided to be a hippie, married a bearded Marxist from Dartmouth born with a silver spoon, and has spent a lifetime indulging in Leftist pap, calling me a racist as they're ever moving into whiter and more insulated neighborhoods. Pricks all of em, they're gonna get what's coming, and this year, I doubt my grandparents and mom will plead with me to hold back on them.

Here's my suggested solution to obnoxious lefty relatives:

"Arguing politics is bad for digestion."
"OK, no more politics, please; this is Thanksgiving."

Really, it's your choice whether or not to take the bait.

In 1998 I was sentenced to life without parole on a first offense. I guess her arguement is that the first murder should be a freebie? Anyway, this is what she did: West, 30, was sentenced to life plus an additional 70 years in prison in 2001 after a jury convicted her of killing Jarrell Cuyler by wrapping a phone cord around his neck and then nearly decapitating him with a box cutter. The jury, which rejected giving West the death penalty, also found West guilty of slashing Jarrell's younger sister, Lindsey, on the neck and wrist because West was jealous of the attention the children received from their father, Arnold Cuyler, who was West's lover at the time.

Dumb. But expected from you, Burt.

Anyway, as it happens I'm probably not technically the most conservative person in my immediate family of longtime Washingtonians. That would be my mom, a Ph.D scientist who nevertheless combines public fame (in her particular discipline) with a Catholic Missouri/Indiana country farmgirl's basic outlook on life.  (My dad is an upstate NY'er, whose politics are essentially conservative but ultimately driven more by his burning desire to see the Democrats lose more than wanting the Republicans to win per se.)  My brother rebels against the rest of our right-wing groupthink by being a casual liberal, but I doubt he thinks too much about it.

My gay uncle, however, is truly a committed left-winger, and me and him get into a political argument pretty much every Thanksgiving/Christmas/get-together, even (especially!) when Mrs. Jeff B. is around to get roped in.  It's tons of fun because let's not kid ourselves, I win every single time on points, regardless

You're right -- they're not a SUBSTITUTE, because that word suggests that sweet potatoes and your normal 'ghetto' potatoes are of identical quality.  Which of course they're not.  Every human being capable of taste and discernment already knows full-fucking-well that sweet potatoes are vastly superior to the ghetto Irish-trash "potato of poors" that you sadly fetishize.

One of the virtues of Thanksgiving is that it's a rare opportunity for we Americans to briefly acknowledge that yes, sweet potatoes really ARE the Master Race Tuber.

At no point in your rambling, incoherent diatribe were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this family is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul...

249 Don't forget one of the law's selling points was that it was going to "save money"; it will in fact pile on more than $2 TRILLION to our debt and that is a low estimate. Electronic Medical Records are also not working well when linked between different health centers and the main market share is just enriching a lady Billionaire from Chicago who is also a huge Obama supporter.

Are you kidding?

Any relative of mine (and I unfortunately do have some hard-core obammy fans that I have to tolerate at family gatherings) who would pull that shit at a family gathering would be physically escorted out of my home, and that would be the last time there would be any kind of contact between us.

They're already at the wedding/funeral/holiday stage of contact with us, mostly "hi" and "bye".  And that's just because of civility on my part.

But they cross a line and start talking their leftist politics, and they will be gone, permanently.

All those things you said above, they are wasted words on people from the left.  They are unapologetic ideologues who can never be wrong.  Kick their asses out of your home instead of wasting your breath.

Actions speak louder than words.

252 Umm The Pittsburgh Courier is NOT a local newspaper as that term is generally used. It is a black newspaper (albeit one with a famous history) with a very small circulation.

Nah.  Just ask them to explain Obamacare to you.  You'll find they have no idea.  Ask them how exactly was Obamacare supposed to provide more medical care to more people for less money?  What exactly is the mechanism by which our costs will decrease? If more people are going to get more medical care, won't we need more doctors and hospitals?  Where will they come from?  What parts of the law is it okay for Obama to ignore?  What parts must he obey?  Does his ability to ignore the law as written impact people's willingness to abide by the law themselves? If insurnace were cheap, wouldn't everybody have it?  So isn't the problem of the uninsured all about insurance costs?  How does Obamacare lower costs? If it costs less to pay the fine than get health insurance via Obamacare, won't anybody that's healthy simply opt to pay the fine?  Given we can't be turned down for pre-existing conditions, why won't people just wait to get sick then buy gold plated insurance?  What do we do if the website never works right?

You run this series of questions the right way, calmly, questioning, like "My stupid brain is just trying to understand, teach me oh wise one".  Trust me, the result is hysterical to watch.

256 My comment to a family friend who was gushing about HillaryCare back in 94: "If we socialize 1/7th of the economy we will be 1/7th of the way to the Soviet Union." Of course the liberty haters had already socialized retirement and done lots of socialism by regulation but I didn't mention that.

257 I have already disowned any liberals in my family and have nothing to do with them. Liberalism is a mental disease and a cancer of the intellect. Why associate with people who only are in your world through the accident of birth? I prefer to walk with winners, not hang with losers.

262 For the leftists in your circle of family/friends who aren't the hopeless Koolaid chugger types but belong to that vast ignorati produced by 3 generations of cultural programming, now might actually be a great time to start gingerly walking them back from the propaganda daze push them towards thinking critically about their views. I've argued long and loud with countless fools on the left and have rarely accomplished anything but pushing them further inside their reality-free bubble. Over time I've found you can reach those whose minds haven't snapped completely shut but not with shouts and insults and in-your-face lists of facts (though it does feel great to smack down a know-nothing prog). Ask a question out loud as if you're struggling with the same problem they are; one that forces them to confront the logical fallacies their "beliefs" are built on. It shocks me how quickly, and sometimes completely, you can wake somebody from their trance once they feel safe to question why they believe the things they do. It's damn refreshing to watch the change too as it is usually quite dramatic.

263 That post was Schadenfreude. That may be the ultimate example of Schadenfreude. (And well-deserved.) And I've copied all your points in order to point them out to my 'voted for the the Unicorn' relatives. (I no longer have friends who voted for him - though that may change, considering...but relatives, you are stuck with.)

264 Typical conservative attitude, all sanctimonious bullshit and using the Thanksgiving dinner table to tell a relative to "keep your stupid mouth shut". Yeah, that's a wonderful reflection of American values right there. Be an asshole and proud of it.  Thanks for demonstrating why so many Americans reject conservative politics and ideology.

265 Matthew,

This is a response to the Democrat Party's Thanksgiving dinner talking points "cheat sheet" they are emailing to their subscribers - to do exactly what you accuse conservatives of doing, which is ruin Thanksgiving dinner by making it all about your liberal politics and your hatred of any family members just because they don't agree with your political views.
