Addendum to My Last Post
— Ace

Commenters are adding some dimensions to the Space Cadets hoax -- comparing it to the media generally.

It's actually a great point: Our "reality" is a rather consensual thing, isn't it? Brian Williams is a thoughtful, credible anchorman because enough People In Red Ties decided he is, right?

Obama Cares About the Poor (despite blocking the poor's only avenue of advancement, school choice) because People Who Pick the Pictures That Appear on Our TV have said he does.

This show is about -- now that commenters have spurred me into thinking about -- the basic untrustworthiness of the media and the dynamics of groupthink among those with suggestible minds and how the eye may be tricked and how the brain might ignore the blatant truth right in front of your nose to indulge in pleasing fiction.

I actually... did not see any of that on first viewing. I just saw a fun, extravagantly-funded practical joke. But it is all there.

Our current "show," called America's Last Spasms, will have a similarly heartbreaking ending.

Of Course... Now that I've highlighted these clips they're going to all get taken down so I don't know why I'm even bothering.

Maybe they'll make it available on Netflix or something. (It's not available now.)

Don't know if anybody's seen that project where a group is in on a hoax of sorts: one person is continually lied to in a setting where they use charts and stuff like that. The name escapes me at the moment, and I haven't seen it in a long time.

I do remember it's not the Evening News.

'Thought Leader' is old corporate-speak. The (relatively) new buzzword is 'Key Opinion Leader', which is actually a fairly useful term. You identify those people who hold influence within their areas of expertise (or within other specified target groups). You then suborn them (and their influence) to your ends, usually by hiring them. The concept is very big in pharmaceutical marketing but has other applications, as well. I noticed that Obama's campaign used elements of it during the 2012 campaign.

I don't think the strongest human urge is to "submit", but there is a strong human urge to "belong".

Some people resist. Some of these people are sociopaths, some are brilliant and creative because they don't place "belonging" over the urge to think and create.

Some people lead, many will follow, but they all want to belong. Even "leaders" need followers to fulfill the need to belong. I read where there were AA groups where eventually everyone stopped drinking, but then some started again just to keep the AA group together.
