— Ace Our long national nightmare is only warming up, I'm afraid.
Robertson only gets to speak his mind without punishment because he has millions of fans.
The rest of us are not so fortunate.
The network and the Robertson family announced Friday that Phil will still be part of the series -- and since he didn't miss any filming, his temporary suspension will have no effect on the upcoming fifth season.
Maet liked this mention of a special contractual rider:
The entire Robertson family has been on hiatus for duck hunting season, a contractual stipulation, which continues through Jan. 26 in their native Louisiana.
Here's A&E's statement:
As a global media content company, A+E NetworksÂ’ core values are centered around creativity, inclusion and mutual respect. We believe it is a privilege for our brands to be invited into peopleÂ’s home and we operate with a strong sense of integrity and deep commitment to these principals. That is why we reacted so quickly and strongly to a recent interview with Phil Robertson.
Wait, because you're a media company you have a special obligation to squelch speech you disagree with? Shouldn't your obligation run in precisely the opposite direction?
While Phil’s comments made in the interview reflect his personal views based on his own beliefs, and his own personal journey, he and his family have publicly stated they regret the “coarse language” he used and the mis-interpretation of his core beliefs based only on the article. He also made it clear he would “never incite or encourage hate.” We at A+E Networks expressed our disappointment with his statements in the article, and reiterate that they are not views we hold.
Isn't this enough? If these statements do not reflect A&E's views -- and I'm quite certain they don't -- why is it not enough to simply say "These statements do not reflect our views"?
We have reached a curious pass in the conception of free speech. First it was widely pushed by the Left that any comment it didn't like had to be "denounced" by every single person aligned with the right.
But simple denunciation turned out to be an appetizer; now it is further demanded that every person and every entity use all of its power to actively discourage, punish, and arrest disapproved thoughts.
But Duck Dynasty is not a show about one man's views. It resonates with a large audience because it is a show about familyÂ… a family that America has come to love. As you might have seen in many episodes, they come together to reflect and pray for unity, tolerance and forgiveness. These are three values that we at A+E Networks also feel strongly about.
How about we all behave like grown-ups and accept the fact that other people are going to occasionally say things we find "offensive" and that there should not be any sanction expected in such cases?
So after discussions with the Robertson family, as well as consulting with numerous advocacy groups, A&E has decided to resume filming Duck Dynasty later this spring with the entire Robertson family.
"Advocacy groups."
We will also use this moment to launch a national public service campaign (PSA) promoting unity, tolerance and acceptance among all people, a message that supports our core values as a company, and the values found in Duck Dynasty. These PSAs will air across our entire portfolio.
They always could have done this if they felt it was necessary to rebut Robertson. Why did they not simply avail themselves of such a simple (and non-coercive) means of fighting speech with, get this, other speech?
Our current social understanding of free speech is this: You can speak your mind freely if you have a large enough army of supporters to pressure a company into resisting pressure from a large army of Speech Police.
This is not free speech. This is free speech as an exceptional thing -- only for those with a wide, passionate following -- not as a routine thing.
A&E is a cowardly organization. First it puts Robertson on "indefinite hiatus" under pressure from one group of people, then it puts him back on the air because they've been pressured by a somewhat larger group of people.
At no point did they trip over anything resembling a general principle of speech free from "consequences" of broad application.

One of the reasons I bailed out of my job at a university around the year 2000 was that the institution was starting to get diversity fever. And, having noticed somewhere along the line that I had the misfortune of being born a white male, I knew exactly what that meant for my future career advancement prospects.

So to exemplify integrity and commitment to principles, the plan was to fire the patriarch (upon which the people voted with their eyes for quite some time to even establish a "brand") and run a marathon of episodes of said patriarch and family to profit on "the brand" while the speech police ran a raid?

Not to take this way off the rails, but the ACA website fiasco is clearly a case where true diversity was out of bounds. A well functioning system has a balance of people that like to move forward full steam ahead along with people that ask a million questions, and each benefits from the other as a check on their worst excesses.
To not have that means you have a system where naysayers are punished. It allows what happened to happen.
That's the type of diversity that has value. That's not what any liberal means by it though.

I would hope so.
And Phil didn't even want to do that Interview...but A'n E insisted that it was part of the family's "contractual obligations".
I've thought all along that Phil had a strong case of 'wrongful termination' against A 'n E...for forcing him to do a interview and then firing him for what he said during that interview.

He didn't make a judgement as to whether the bending of physical standards was fair or not, but acknowledged that, sometimes, different skill sets are called for.
We had a female officer that weighed around 105 pounds and had only 3 fingers on her right hand. No better skill sets, and we enjoyed calling her "Edie Scissorhands."

@207 Talk to absolutely anyone who moved here to escape the former Soviet State. I have friends who grew up in Poland who had underground Catholic Mass and risked their homes and freedom for their God. I had a professor who told me that if you spoke out about one "Union" getting preferencial political treatment and the wrong person heard it you lost your job and your shared apartment in a heartbeat.

Solzenhitsyn (sp?) had a story about a guy who got sent to the Gulag. His crime? He was attending a meeting where everyone was applauding Stalin (who wasn't actually present), and after about 15 minutes or so of applause, he was the first one to stop clapping.

"A+E NetworksÂ’ core values are centered around creativity, inclusion and mutual respect"
Oh, fuck that. An entertainment company with products on TV has "core values" having anything to do with "inclusion and mutual respect"? WTF?
Creativity - fine. Of course. In you're in the fucking entertainment business. What the hell is "inclusion"? It's an outstanding example of the idiotic moral narcissism-speak that now besmirches a formerly serious culture. "Mutual respect" - uh, doesn't that go without saying? Except for those for whom the lack of same ALSO goes without saying (Nazis, child molesters, thieves, killers, cheaters, wife-abusers, fascists, authoritarians, Ba'athists, vandals, et al)?
Cowardice the least of the problems, but it is important too. In fact, it appears to be a widespread problem (if some are correct, it is behind Justice Roberts' self-beclownment, for example). Of course it's hard to say if it's mostly cowardice, or also Ace's well-described new order of conditional free speech (in which an ignorant bigoted authoritarian tendency is more a factor that cowardice).

DayBrother and junior, the insightful and painfully mortifying observations by folks from authoritarian societies have been part of my experience for a very long time.
The inquiries from former Soviet subjects about things ranging from obviously distorted US "journalism" to fairly obvious constitutional and legal irregularities in the US to the many puzzled Iraqis (English speakers and worldly) wondering about the hysteria in the US over the war (uh, the one THEY were actually living, mostly calmly and resolutely) and particularly over Katrina - these were searing reminders of just how bad things are.
It's one thing to encounter astonishingly perfect English being spoken by someone who'd never left the USSR, or to find amazing levels of expertise and literacy on many subjects these people knew only from afar. Easy to understand - they were in a prison of sorts, and studying these things was not only an escape, but one of the few ways to defy the awful gray blanket of stupid that was Soviet "official" society.
But people who were trapped in authoritarian hell-holes their entire lives often have a vastly better innate sense of freedom, even of specific freedoms America has always been known for, than those that now pass for "citizens" here.

What is humorous is that the only tolerance that wasn't displayed was by the frothing left and AandE for Phil's personal feelings. He himself was not intolerant about homosexuality. They are basically the same strand of prig that will pontificate on what authentic "Mexican" food is, because they spent 2 weeks in Cancun.. Your acquaintance almost certainly thinks they are exceptionally tolerant, but note how they reject people that don't toe the line and follow their orthodoxy step by step in exchange for their "acceptance".
We (straight people) don't understand. We shouldn't have to even pretend we do understand. Which is all Phil Robertson admitted to, and I fail to see how he hurt anybody accept those that thrive and capitalize on being hurt.

And, any Christian listing sins which include homosexuality will find that their statement now EQUATES homosexuality with each of those sins. This is why GLAAD says that Robertson said that homosexuality was the same as bestiality. He didn't say that. GLAAD pulled the same thing with their protest against Bob Newhart's speech.

It's like the "dialogue" on race which always turns out to be a monologue.

And you want to end your life,
Bills to pay, a dead-end job,
And problems with the wife.
But don't throw in the tow'l,
'Cuz there's a place right down the block...
Where you can drink your misery away...
At Flaming Moe's.... (Let's all go to Flaming Moe's...)
When liquor in a mug (Let's all go to Flaming Moe's...)
Can warm you like a hug. (Flaming Moe's...)
And happiness is just a Flaming Moe away...
Happiness is just a Flaming Moe away...

So can anyone give some background on this claim. I see a few broken links on Amazon for this title purportedly from Phil.
Does this book exist in any form anywhere still?
Did Phil Robertson actually write it?
What is in this book?
Why did it disappear so completely?

Good thing there's no need for upper body strength in infantry combat.
The three girls who made it through infantry combat training were held to the same physical performance standards as the men.

Right, so where men would have to complete minimum to be a paper pusher, women will only have to if they *choose* infantry combat.
Posted by: Amy Shulkusky at December 27, 2013 11:32 PM (3ONFH)
Not really. What you mean to say is that they were held to the same MINIMUM standard. Its like qualifying for the Punt/Pass/Kick contest by making the minumum 30 yard pass, but all the other guys are throwing it 60 yards.
Marine Infantry is expected to ace the Physical Fitness test. Perfect score is 300. Most make that, the few that don't still score in the 280s. I'd like to know what the 3 women scored.
