A&E: We Are Shocked, SHOCKED! To Find Out Phil Robertson Is Such An Old Fuddy Duddy
— andy

Except for when they're setting up "reality TV" tension between Phil and a guy rivaled in his masculinity by Footie Pajama Boy, that is.

Because, *wink* *nod*

You remember that episode, right? The subtext of that plot line was Phil's supposed disdain for the at-least-metro-and-most-probably-homo guy Miss Kay brought over to photograph their dog. Great ratings - woo-hoo! - but then reality got a little too real for A&E when Phil started talking about his views on sin by quoting from that obscure Bible thingy.

But don't fret, you knuckle-dragging God-botherers. A&E is showing the courage of its convictions by airing 35 hours of Duck Dynasty for CHRISTmas next week. (apologies for the TMZ link)

DD is pretty much taking over A&E's Christmas schedule. The network will air 4 separate rerun marathons of the show in 4 days (December 22-25) totaling 35.5 hours of air time.

December 22 -- 5PM-4AM EST
December 23 -- 7PM-4AM EST
December 24 -- 6PM-9PM EST
December 25 -- 3:30PM-4AM EST

Season 5 of Duck Dynasty has already been filmed, so "suspending" Phil doesn't really do anything at the moment. I demand that A&E not ... no, wait ... I demand that GLAAD demand that A&E not air any episodes of Duck Dynasty until the entire Robertson family apologizes and agrees to fully embrace homosexuality.

Yeah, I thought so.

11 What do they do with Season Five? Edit Phil out? I can't imagine A&E airing a new season with Phil in it. Can't imagine GLAAD allowing them to air it that way... When Lifetime and Bravo were fighting over "Project Runway," the season in the can when the fight erupted stayed there for at least a year -- as I recall.

20 Intolerant GLAAD Reeling From Biggest Backlash in Years YahooTV reported, via Free Republic: In the fallout over Wednesday’s suspension of “Duck Dynasty” star Phil Robertson by A&E for anti-gay and racist remarks, GLAAD is experiencing record levels of backlash. “In the five-and-a-half years I’ve worked at GLAAD, I’ve never received so many violently angry phone calls and social media posts attacking GLAAD for us speaking out against these comments,” the media watchdog organization’s vice president of communications Rich Ferraro told TheWrap. He said those reactions range from those who simply believe as Robertson believes to those who feel that GLAAD and A&E’s actions limit the reality star’s free speech. “I don’t think this is about the first amendment,” Ferraro said. “I feel it’s more about the America we live in today. That is one where Americans, gay and straight, are able to speak out when people in the public eye make anti-gay and racist remarks.” At Gateway Pundit: http://tinyurl.com/nnu5tv7

35 I'm sticking by my original thoughts: A&E made a legitimate business decision (in that it was in their purview) but it was clearly a stupid business decision. Andy's video only seems to confirm that in my mind. A&E had hoped to make a "laugh at the hillbillies" show. This clip is an example of that, we're supposed to laugh at how intolerant he is. But the show is has become a "enjoy this downhome Christian family" show. Which has an entirely different viewer make up. A&E is still trying to placate the former group of viewers (who don't exist now if they ever did.)

36 31 Posted by: grammie winger at December 21, 2013 11:16 AM (P6QsQ) Sounds like A&E was playing poiitics. Too bad for them the Robertsons were not playing, just living their beliefs. Makes you think Phil saw it coming, in the interview he makes it clear he knows the show will not last forever and it merely a way to spread the word of Christ.

46 A source close to the family, who asked not to be named, told Daily Mail Online: ‘You have to ask yourself, why this interview happened and why it ever became public. Someone from A&E was there and was aware of the kind of answers Phil was giving.

‘But despite that, they didn’t ever try to stop it or control it. Instead, they let it hit the headlines and then released a statement condemning it.

‘It is our belief that they knew what was going to happen and then used the situation to exercise control over Phil.

Oh?

Too fucking far afield for you to make that connection?

Let me spell it out for you:
The only way GLAAAG can afford to operate is if they are tax-exempt. Meaning, they are subsidized by the federal government via a "tax loophole."
Therefore: When CLAAAG speaks they do so because of the federal government. And they are exploiting their government-favored position to stifle the free speech of another.

Looking forward to next month, when I cancel the satellite TV service. I'll miss a couple shows, but will be content knowing that my money isn't going to MSNBC and a bunch of other nonsense-spewing networks.

We've had it with packaged cable, and our year term expires next month. We'll keep internet, and phone, and use Amazon Prime, and Netflix for most of our tv watching.

As it is, we watch just a few shows, on only a couple channels anyway....I don't see the need to pay for so much crap I never watch. If they offered 'a la carte' service, it might be different, but they don't, so oh well.

My PhD is in Business (and specifically in Finance). So by definition I'm an unregenerate capitalist. Add in that I support the Phil Robertson and it makes the English (and Gay Studies) Profs' heads explode.

I was recently in a university-wide teaching fellows program (we'd get together twice a month to discuss ways of becoming more effective teachers). We quickly broke into two camps - the profs from a discipline that involved "hard" knowledge where you could actually make an OBJECTIVE distinction between right and wrong answers (math, engineering, finance, non-global warming science, etc...), and the English/Social Studies/Grievance Studies folks.

About once every other meeting, we (the "hard knowledge" camp) would figure out whose turn it was to say something to light up the other camp. It was the most fun I'd have all month.

156 I feel a to;dr coming on... and it's not time for a new thread yet... is it? 1st, define sin. Evil = error, anything < perfect, so, that's just about everything we do, right? Sin = willful erring, and we've all done that. While some strive not to err, some pretend they don't know better but they really do. So, we try to just inform the erring, but must appeal to the sinner's idealism. (Stage three for the path of sin is irredeemable iniquity, and that's hellacious.) 2. Moral authority Is something a sin because the Bible, guru, church, or FLotUS says not to? For non-Fundamentalist non-Papal Authority folks, right and wrong can still be plain. Moral transgression is a comprehensible interpersonal formulation, and personal righteousness, to understand and aspire to ideals intrinsic in Creation, can be appreciated without resorting to authoritarian doctrine. Almost as if we had some kind of innate sense of truth. 3. So is homosexuality a sin if you don't consider every word of Leviticus divinely inspired, or what have you? First ask, is it error? Well, anything but coitus is, per species survival, functionally erroneous, so some believe there's just one way for two to tango... and no dancing! Yet mouths are fun. It's okay if you're married, isn't it, to... well... hey, just close the door! It's not just the sex, though. It's the fundamental attraction. Who you want to wake up with. I can't fault anyone finding love ... or comforting companionship ... if you can get it. That has nothing to do with degrading gay porn parades or gay mafia agendas. I know some folks I believe were sort-of destined for homosexuality, others I believe are in the abused & confused group. Aren't we all, some way. Nobody's perfect. I know a lot of what I used to think was okay I no longer believe is right. I'm grateful there's reported to be forgiveness for the sincerely repentant if I can ever work my way up from sin to sincerity. I'd do my best to help others avoid my errors and eschew sin. And I've got a pile of stones here for anyone wants to be first to cast one. /honk

180 Abraham Lincoln at Cooper Union, 1859. Draw your own parallels:

The question recurs, what will satisfy them? Simply this: We must not only let them alone, but we must somehow, convince them that we do let them alone. This, we know by experience, is no easy task. We have been so trying to convince them from the very beginning of our organization, but with no success. In all our platforms and speeches we have constantly protested our purpose to let them alone; but this has had no tendency to convince them. Alike unavailing to convince them, is the fact that they have never detected a man of us in any attempt to disturb them.

These natural, and apparently adequate means all failing, what will convince them? This, and this only: cease to call slavery wrong, and join them in calling it right. And this must be done thoroughly - done in acts as well as in words. Silence will not be tolerated - we must place ourselves avowedly with them. Senator Douglas' new sedition law must be enacted and enforced, suppressing all declarations that slavery is wrong, whether made in politics, in presses, in pulpits, or in private. We must arrest and return their fugitive slaves with greedy pleasure. We must pull down our Free State constitutions. The whole atmosphere must be disinfected from all taint of opposition to slavery, before they will cease to believe that all their troubles proceed from us.

188 Here's the reason that the homomafia is so pissed. They are rabidly against labeling homosexuality as a sin. It's very strange. I mean, let's take a man having an affair with a woman who he truly loves. He still realizes he's sinning, right? If someone called him on it he wouldn't lash out about the HATER OMG. He'd shrug his shoulders and mumble something about the hart wanting what it wants and go about his life. The truth of the matter is that the path of biblical sexuality is very narrow. It's very hard to not sin sexually, and most people don't even really try. Ask someone if premarital sex is a sin, and they'll probably say "yep, call me a sinner." and then continue to do it. But not gays. Nope. We can not call that sin. That's loooooove and, like, totally sacred.

216 Still have not figured out how a "lifestyle" decision, like homosexual activity, will be risk rated in comparison to overweight or smoking. Logic would say that a dangerous lifestyle, with absolutely known risks, would make underwriting those risks result in higher premiums. Overweight, drinking and smoking have enough wiggle room in the base so that underwriters could ignore those risks. How in heaven's name could the risks of same-sex activity be comparable? That is where I am totally stumped. Hepatitis, HIV, STDs, fissures, etc. seem to be a bigger known risk than anything else. Is the gay mafia doing a preemptive strike on the looooove front to avoid the rational analysis of physical risky behavior? Yes, I am shopping insurance and not happy as we are all outrageously healthy and a family of Clydesdale-type people. Diversity my Aunt Fanny. Grrrr.

226 What I really don't understand about militant homosexuals is this: I, too, have committed sexual sin, punishable by stoning according to Levitical law and condemned in the same New Testament passages as homosexuality. I feel absolutely no need for everyone else to be apprised of my status as a (former) fornicator and to be falling over each other to affirm my sexual choices. In fact, it kind of disgusts me since I know from experience that sex outside marriage is downright dreary compared with sex inside marriage. As a faithful wife, I still don't require that everyone else constantly affirm my choice. The closest thing I can think of is that I prefer the title "Mrs." to "Miss" or "Ms." but I never make a stink about it. Well, and when another man propositions me, I'm thinking, "You've got to be kidding me -- why would I make such a lousy trade?" All I can assume is that the militants are uncomfortable with their choices and have been unable to assuage their discomfort themselves no matter what they try. The only solution is to try to find something or someone from outside themselves to make the discomfort go away.

And jumped at the chance to destroy it.

In fact, it kind of disgusts me since I know from experience that sex outside marriage is downright dreary compared with sex inside marriage. I think its the former part that is important. Gays have been fighting for years to have their lifestyles accepted as normal. Excitable Andi even titled his book Virtually Normal. The biggest impediment to this goal is traditional Judeo-Christian beliefs. How can you have gay marriage accepted in a society that has traditionally viewed homosexuality as a sin? You can't. Only two solutions, 1) stop homosexual activities or change the prevailing standards and you can only change the prevailing standards by attacking and destroying anyone who advocates for them. Gays don't want to be a former anything. They want our values to be former.

243 From TMZ:

'Duck Dynasty' -- Cracker Barrel Bails on Phil Robertson Products

The Southern-themed food chain reacted to Phil Robertson's anti-gay comments by removing "selected products which we were concerned might offend some of our guests" from their stores and restaurants.
We called a bunch of Cracker Barrel stores, and the managers told us the products that were removed were the ones that had Phil's face plastered on the packaging. Almost to a person, the managers added, "We still offer a wide variety of Duck Commander products," and then we heard a click.
C.B. offers this explanation ... "We operate within the ideals of fairness, mutual respect and equal treatment of all people. These ideals are the core of our corporate culture."

250 From wiki --- The "rural purge" of American television networks (in particular CBS) was a series of cancellations between 1969 and 1972 of still popular rural-themed shows with demographically skewed audiences, the majority of which occurred at the end of the 1970-71 television season.

258 The point was made on the podcast, and I agree, that if we had a la cartel cable, A and E would never have suspended Phil. If people could point there remote at the TV and cancel a network at a whim, or as part of a big protest/boycott, the execs causing instantaneous mass cancellations wouldn't last a day.

259 Documents leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden show that the NSA created and promulgated a flawed formula for generating random numbers to create a "back door" in encryption products, the New York Times reported in September. Reuters later reported that RSA became the most important distributor of that formula by rolling it into a software tool called Bsafe that is used to enhance security in personal computers and many other products.

Undisclosed until now was that RSA received $10 million in a deal that set the NSA formula as the preferred, or default, method for number generation in the BSafe software, according to two sources familiar with the contract. Although that sum might seem paltry, it represented more than a third of the revenue that the relevant division at RSA had taken in during the entire previous year, securities filings show.

318 Posted by: Great Googlymooglies, Zappa's mindful webworker at December 21, 2013 12:02 PM (qG1i2) I have a different take on your Sin argument. I start with the basics. In the beginning, mankind found itself wandering around in small tribes. Individuals would occasionally get killed by various activities which were non obviously dangerous to the primitives, and so they developed a set of rules to prevent such unfortunate results. Later generations said "Why should we obey these rules? They are stupid, and we want to do that forbidden thing." Smarter and Elder memebers of the tribe said "We need some sort of Schtick to make these youngins follow these rules which prevent them from being killed. "I know what to do!", says one particular cunning fellow. "We'll tell them that there are supernatural people who will punish them if they catch them doing something forbidden. We will call them "gods." " "We will tell them that they live in the sky, and they can see everything we do, and that they will know when you've broken one of their rules. " "These Kids will always be looking over their shoulder whenever they contemplate doing something forbidden, because their own minds will have been turned towards regulating their behavior. Their "gods" will live in their head, and thereby control their actions. " "The occasional rule breaker will come to tragedy (because that's what the rules are really for anyway) and we will claim that the "gods" punished him for his transgressions. " "Just telling people something is a bad idea simply won't work. Likewise, If they have to learn the lessons the hard way, they might not survive, and the most important thing to us is the survival of our foolish children. " "Creating this mind trap is the simplest and most elegant way of getting them to regulate their own behavior, and thereby insure the best chance for their survival. " And the Elders of the tribe said "Aye!"

I have never been to a Cracker Barrel, but I've always kept it in the back of my mind as a "should try once" place, especially because I usually see them when I'm traveling and have to choose from one chain or another, anyway. Did I miss anything?

I used to frequent one several years ago...but eventually moved to PA, and there are none around me. While traveling recently, I had breakfast at one, and the quality of the food has gone downhill. Portions are much smaller, and it's obvious they're not making food from scratch as their billboards claim.

Looks like they're starting down the same path Stuckeys, and HoJo followed to their eventual ruin.

324 My BS meter is also registering a bit...This is not a 1st amendment issue either. A&E had to know that by appearing to fire the DuckBoss, they would offend nearly all of the shows viewers. By doing it around Xmas, they magnify the emotions of the viewership. A&E knew they would be showing lots of DD during the next couple weeks ensuring giant viewership. The next season of DD is already filmed so the only way Phil disappears is via editing. Pretty shrewd and devious marketing if you ask me...I'm not sure they knew the firestorm it would trigger but the mood of the country outside of NY/DC/Hollywood ensured the reaction.

327 It didn't help when Megyn Kelly called Phil's comments "crude." Did she read the article? The author used much cruder language. Umm, he used standard anatomical terminology. Unlike certain elected officials & mfm that like to say things like teabagger, etc. part of the reason the lefties are so bent out of shape is because Phil reminded everybody, just how icky buttseks is. That's the colorful picture back in the silent majority's minds instead of fruity guys that like to decorate like the queer eye guys. Which actually illustrates my point. They used queer, a slur, in a show title and that was a ok. But say vagina & look out, end of the world dogs & cats living together stuff.

367 To continue my dissertation on "sin".... How did stuff like Adultery and Homosexuality get put on the list? Because it's damned dangerous! Adultery will get the adulterers killed by a jealous man. Family rivalries will be inflamed, and it may very well end up killing numerous members of the tribe with animosities stretching far into the foreseeable future. Homosexuality is simply dangerous from a disease perspective, and in the times before antibiotics, that shit could kill you. Intestinal bacteria getting into tears or abrasions of the anal passage could be fatal. Likewise intestinal bacteria crawling up your wee wee. And that's with no contemplation of engaging with multiple partners, (a very common occurrence with most homosexuals) some of which may very well have NEW nasty little buggies which are even more dangerous! Homosexuality also did nothing to add to the defense capabilities of the tribe. If you are a small tribe, what you need to deal with bigger tribes is MORE PEOPLE. Not making people is a SERIOUS FUCKING PROBLEM when you badly need them.

Baltimore-based sports apparel maker Under Armour is keeping its ties to the "Duck Dynasty" franchise amid a media uproar over comments made by star Phil Robertson about gays and blacks.

While the company says it does not condone Robertson's statements, Under Armour does not have plans to end its business dealings with the Robertson family.
"The recent comments in the GQ article are not reflective of Under Armour's beliefs and do not represent our point of view," the company said in a statement. "As a company, we are committed to diversity and inclusion and believe in treating everyone equally and with respect."

436 A&E’s “suspension” of Duck Dynasty patriarch Phil Robertson will apparently not affect new episodes of the show scheduled to start airing after the holidays on January 15th. Entertainment Weekly is citing sources “close to the situation” who say that when the show returns from hiatus, footage featuring Robertson, who caused a major uproar with his condemnation of homosexual sex in GQ magazine, will remain intact. “There’s no negotiation to have; we’re doing the show,” the insider told EW. “We’ll figure out a solution. It’s just not going to happen overnight. Everybody will take a break for the holidays and regroup afterward. That’s probably the smartest thing for everyone to do. Time heals a lot of wounds.” While A&E’s suspension could have included pulling not-yet-aired episodes of the show that include Phil Robertson, it now appears it will only affect episodes that have not yet been shot. Assuming there is an ultimately reconciliation between the network and the Robertson family, this could mean an uninterrupted viewing experience for fans of the show. http://tinyurl.com/lu7xdkp In other words, "Phil makes us a shit ton of money!"

Posted by: Name Withheld Upon Request at December 21, 2013 01:25 PM (6Nqkf) I actually read an article about how such surgery was performed in Ancient India. It's really quite clever. Someone with their nose chopped off would probably be willing to do almost anything if someone could restore it. There was a large profit incentive for people to develop a technique that works. Incidentally, skin from the scrotum was normally used to create the inside of the nostrils for a man. External Vaginal tissue was used for a woman. Adultery was a serious business. It had the potential to kill many members of the tribe if it got out of hand. In a lot of early cultures, it was punishable by death for the participants. I would suppose India may have created the less onerous punishment because insufficient population was not a problem with which they were facing.

It's quite obvious that diversity now means that we celebrate differences in how people look, while insisting upon complete uniformity in how we think, act, and believe. It's yet another word that has been destroyed.

Well functioning organizations and departments have some kind of creative tension that keeps the gears moving. There are people that are gung ho about trying new things, and there are people that need to have to have 1,000 questions answered before they feel comfortable changing one thing about a process.

If you get solely either type of person on a project, the project is destined to fail. You end up with Obamacare marching full steam ahead, with anyone that raises concerns becoming a pariah. There's the type of diversity that can tangibly have saved a lot of people a lot of heartache. There's where the value of having someone that can look at things from a different perspective might have been of some real value.

A person cannot engage in such behavior with out the statistical probability of picking up something very nasty. As a generally rule, long practicing (Male) homosexuals are infected with some nasty shit. The spread of such diseases is slower in the Heterosexual community because the female very much regulates the sexual activity of her partner as much as she is able. Sex with others is generally out, and sex with her is when she's in the mood. But that has been changing over the years too.

488 There's nothing going on there that couldn't also be said about heterosexuals. It speaks more to the immorality of promiscuity, and of not practicing proper hygene, than of heterosexuality itself. It goes beyond sexually-transmitted diseases as well. e.g., "Typhoid Mary". Posted by: Optimizer at December 21, 2013 01:39 PM (Mxt9o) Given that heterosexuals make up 98% of the population, 98% of the STD transfers ought to be attributable to them, but aren't. Likewise with molestation cases. Something like 40% of molestation cases end up having a male victim. Sure, the same could be said of heterosexuals, but that is deliberately misleading as to an accurate understanding of the situation. (Male) Homosexuals are punching WAY outside their weight class in terms of disease and molestation.

Bonobos are about the only species of which I am aware, that might be legitimately regarded as Bi-Sexual. Beyond that, other animals just do it to assert dominance, and none of them prefer to have sex with the males. The Females are always their first choice. I know of no species that commonly has individuals who prefer sex only with another member of the same sex.

AnalE has a major hit show, Duck Dynasty. They hate it and look for ways to kill it and alienate its 14-million strong audience. Neilsen results show they've succeeded.

Cracker Barrel decides to alienate 70-75% of its audience for a demographic that doesn't eat at Cracker Barrel anyway then sends out a deceitful press release when caught at it. Social media response indicates they've succeeded.

What other smart decisions are being made so far...
