Spring rain smell fresh thread [Purp]
— Open Blogger

Here's something to ponder...

Is Windows Vista actually better than the rep its gotten?

Sure, there were teething problem and such when first released. There was a lot of new code there beyond XP, but a fully patched up install on TODAY's multi-core multi-Ghz hardware (or even 5 years ago hardware), with 4G or so of memory is NOT hideously slow or particularly unstable. An old Pentium 4 with a 1G of memory, and an 80G drive? Well...that's different. THAT sucks ass very much running Vista.

Would you rather have the Windows 8 bizarro world interface or the Vista rolling whorehouse pimpmobile interface? I'm getting kinda comfy with the pimpmobile in a machine I'm setting up to do some Windows Phone phone app development on.

Windows 7 is kinda like Vista minus the sketchy stability (at the time) bloatware glitz, plus moar drivers. I like Windows 7. W7 has a spartan Windows 2000 ambiance -- it doesn't get in your way.

I stuck with Windows 2000 from its release through early 2012. I had it on dual-P133 machines, dual Pentium Pro's, some Pentium II/III machines and found it to be pretty stable on officially supported hardware.

In 12 years of use I can count the number of W2K BSOD's I had on one hand, and all of those were due to busted hardware or some unsupported crap I was trying to prod into functioning with witchcraft and animal sacrifices.

The thing about W2K, and Windows 7 is they run OK on the hardware of their respective eras. There wasn't a big "expectation gap" like there was with Vista.

Suppose Microsoft had done a XP "second edition" with more hardware/driver support and delayed Vista a couple of years until hardware developments caught up with its voracious appetite for consuming hardware?

Would our impressions of it be different? I think so.

I know at the time I read the minimum hardware specs for Vista and thought "Wow, I don't have any machines in inventory with that!", so I passed on upgrading. If I did have a minimum machine, I'd have been disappointed anyway.

But today, you can find machines literally in the trash that have specs to run Vista just fine. In fact, the machine I just installed it on was dumpster dived. I replaced one bad memory stick that made it act like it was stone freaking dead, and it sprang to life again. And the replacement stick came from another dived machine, so expenditure of instantaneous cash for repair was $0.00.

I needed a brief respite from thinking about the Gosnell horror story. This was it. This vid is hilarious.

14 Windows 7 period Never crashed once in over 18 months. Every other version I've run from Windows 1.0a* on up crashed somewhere between multiple times per day to a couple times a month. * Yeah, I bought the very first version and ran it on a dual floppy machine. Hard drives were kinda pricey at the time. It worked but thrashed the hell out of the floppies.

20 Mac OS X is just a pretty Unix. I should have made the switch earlier and wouldn't go back to Windows if you paid me.

Posted by: Andy at April 13, 2013 10:49 AM (OZPoa)

21 Oddly I never had a problem with ME... but then I only used it on older machines for a while after XP came out because I got free discs / licenses. The point there being it was the fully updated version, not the one right after it came out. XP was really "Microsoft's Triumph," there was some grumbling at first but it ran relatively well from the start. They keep talking about lower-spec versions of their new OSes (since XP at least) that run on slower hardware (and arguably better on minimum hardware), but they never seem to actually *do* it in a meaningful way. It would actually help a lot, as I've mentioned before the biggest problem most average users seem to have is not absolute computational power but *responsiveness*. This is mostly a software issue, though only partly an OS issue. Purp, Epo and I have had this discussion late at night more than once. It's too bad ReactOS died (a third-party XP clone that could have supported newer hardware / devices). It may have been doomed from the start. There are OSes that run much more smoothly, but they tend to be really poorly supported or have bizarre quirks. You're pretty much stuck with Windows (popular bloat), MacOS (Linux hipster bloat) and Linux (really poorly explained bloat, but if you edit all the config files in their individual directories you can fix part of that, RTFM n00b!).

22 Windows 8 is now a certified catastrophe, even though Microsoft is still trying to put a happy face on it.  Other than the xbox, has Ballmer done anything right?  Vista? Zune? Windows Mobile? Tablets? That guy is killing Microsoft and with Windows 8 he's taking the entire PC industry with him.

Way to go, Microsoft!

Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That at April 13, 2013 10:51 AM (Kpn/z)

25 I hated Vista, I had my compute restored to XP. Then upgraded to Windows 7. Last year I bought a Mac and love it. I use the Windows 7 computer to log into my work computer. That works better with my work computer. This Mac's screen is smaller. That old Windows 7 Computer started giving me trouble a month ago. I bought the cheapest Windows computer I could buy and delivered ASAP. It has Windows 8. I hate it, but I haven't figured out half of it. You have to have a Windows ID to load anything at all. It has more junk on it to uninstall, EBay, Amazon, and a ton of others. I will only use Windows for work and will never buy anything but Macs if I ever need another computer. Macs are the easiest computers to set up.

You can still get Win7, so the more important decision is how you use your machine.

Desktop touch machines are pretty pointless. If you just need a work-station, then W7 is prolly best.

If your machine is a 2nd computer used for surfing or email laptop or tablet w/ touch is becoming common.

31 I ran W98 up until 2008. It couldn't keep up with the new internet video/java stuff but the machine was lean and mean. Got Vista on a dual core box and it's still useful. My dad bought me a quad core nb or the box would still be used all the time.
The Vista box does this weird thing though. Sometimes, on start up, it will shut down and restart 3 times, on the 3rd try it beeps and...nothing, no logo, just blankness. My solution is to use the nb for a few days and then try again which usually does the trick. Still, WTF man?

39 My PC has 3 boot disks, one with Vista, one with 7, and one with 8.
Vista is easily 3x slower than 7 and probably more. 8 is faster than 7 by far, and not as freaky as you'd think - just go to the desktop and everything is fine. Ignore the start screen - and make your own start folder just like the old days. It is however, not as stable as 7 - I'm already having issues.

For instance, my 8 boot disk keeps thinking there's some USB device attached it doesn't recognize (there's not) and unlike every other OS turning it off in the hardware manager doesn't work. Stoopid. If I boot on my 7 disk, everything is cool - no scary USB device.

I'm going to do a new build soon and am thinking of getting another copy of 7 just because I don't think 8 is quite ready for prime time. 7 was so stable in fact I've had this quad-core PC longer than any other PC or Mac I've ever owned.

What finally screwed up my system 7 OS was an M$ update I didn't catch that corrupted the whole update thing. I could never roll back nor fix it even with the "update fixer" utility. Lesson learned - and have it ask to update giving you a chance to see just what it's going to do and when it does it.

40 A desktop touch machine is *awesome* for something like an entertainment center PC or whole-house control computer, or with a protective screen something like a PC with manuals and videos to help you when working on cars or whatever. For actual desktop tasks, not so much. Ask anyone from Xerox PARC in the 80s about "Gorilla Arm." Human physiology is not designed for extended fine motor activity in front of the upper torso.

45 I like Windows 7, more or less - Changing the desktop is a pain  b/c it insists on stretching the picture to fit the screen no matter how I choose the option to just center it, and it wants to restart the somputer every time it gets a new update and I constantly have to tell it to postpone it. It appears to be stable and easy for a non-computer-person to use, though.

I learned that one the hard way too.

Other lessons:

1. Never buy a Microsoft OS when it first comes out. Wait at least a year, maybe forever.

2. Never ever "try" one of MS's "free" trials of the Office suite. It'll do its cyber kudzu impression, essentially scrub your HD of most of the old version, and take an afternoon to undo the damage.

50 The tile interface could actually be adopted by Corporate America for a lot of tasks - if it weren't for the fact that touchscreens cost bank. Even as it is, the *idea* is not unsound, I just think they got off in the weeds on implementation. I can tell you a lot of IT departments would love to lock most users into a big menu with pretty pictures. I think it will happen, just not with this implementation.

XP support officially ends in April 2014.

That said, that just means they won't update security fixes anymore and some other minor details.

I don't know what happens if you have to reactivate it if you change hardware. Will reactivation work? I don't know. But I don't care because I bought my machine from vendor with win xp pre installed, I don't have to worry about reactivation problems.

You might not have to either.

They're providing a half assed path to upgrade but you have to have winxp pro to get it.

If they were smart (smart? This IS Microsoft) they would allow a relicense for xp to buy additional years of support. If it was reasonably priced, I'd buy it. Or an upgrade path from winxp Home.

I'll still putt along with my xp until I can't do what I want to do anymore and I'll worry about that then.

Now I've also upgrade my XP to the max with every full blown sp1, sp2, sp3 so ymmv and I also get the upgrades constantly. (I don't use automatic upgrade though)

If you don't use IE7 or IE 8 then security wise you're probably be okay for quite a while as the dick hackers will move on to the newer os's cause that's where the holes are.

If it ain't broke then don't keep coming out with crap and claim you're fixing something.

Microsoft needs to change their business model.

52 Posted by: Clutch Cargo at April 13, 2013 02:56 PM (Qxdfp) I wonder if that update is what ruined my Windows 7 computer? The updates ran automatically at work and it installed IE10 and even through we rolled it back to IE9 at the office it affected IE9 in unpredictable ways. Sometimes we have to use the IE 32 bit version to use banking systems at the office. The Windows 7 computer is 5+ years old and it works fine for a while then the screen will go blank, but I can see hear it running.

53 Win8 is slower than I'd hope. My laptop routinely hangs for no apparent reason. I jump straight to the desktop, but even then I had to install a bunch of software so it behaved normally. Like a pdf viewer. Cause the default pdf viewer jumps back out to the stupid full screen tile interface. I never want anything to, by default, go full screen. That should be obvious by me choosing the desktop interface.

Posted by: Flatbush Joe at April 13, 2013 11:03 AM (ZPrif)

54 The absolutely unforgivable sin of Vista is how they completely destroyed the search function.  The security features that keep you from doing pretty much anything without having to google the correct incantation are bad enough, but if they did not hang the programmer who designed a "search" feature that doesn't bother to look anywhere, and can't find files you know are there, then they all deserve to burn in hell forever... or at least for a period of time equal to the amount of time that they caused people to waste looking for things and begging their computer to do what they just told it to do.

So yeah, Vista really is that bad.  We just got used to not being able to rely on some of its functions.  There was no reason it had to be that way.  They chose to handicap it as a giant F-U to their customer base.

And don't get me started on itunes or the iphone.  Those things put me off Apple forever.  They are much, much worse than anything Microsoft ever put out.  You can pretty much guarantee that updates will wipe out your shit about 1/3rd of the time.

56 Sometimes, on start up, it will shut down and restart 3 times, on the 3rd try it beeps and...nothing, no logo, just blankness.

First, pull the memory (and cards) out and reseat them.  No video is usually a bad memory module that's mapped at the extreme low end of memory.

If that memory is bad, the BIOS/POST won't work and the vid card never gets initialized.

The beeps are BIOS's way of telling you shit when there's no video.

If the reseat doesn't work, then pull the first memory module (probably marked 0 or 1 on the mobo) and swap it with another.

57 Though, I'm not sure that the end of XP support forces you to get an upgrade to a new Windows version.

Are there that many vulnerabilities left in WinXP that you can't keep it trucking along after MS stops supporting it?

59 Still running XP on this machine I'm using right now, and it's as stable as it needs to be. I have no wish to upgrade (heh) to a new OS. My work involves creating graphic logs. The XP version of the software runs fast in this machine. It has a few bugs, but I have learned all the work-arounds, and I am content. I have a Toshiba laptop with Win7 on it, and I loaded the Win7 version of the logging software. It runs pitifully slow, and has a host of nasty bugs. I did one entire job using the Win7 computer, and I thoroughly hated it. So I will continue using the XP version for as long as I can get away with it. I briefly ran another laptop with Kubuntu Linux on it, and quite liked that. May have another go at Linux.

It seems a lot of SW publishers do that nowadays. A program works fine, but then they have to "improve" it, and now it is overly complicated, buggy, slow, and crash-prone.

For that reason, I always keep the old versions of all my software, in case the publisher screws the pooch with an update.

70 I am still running XP on my old clunker but soon I am going to have to give up both.  It is behaving erratically again which means something else is getting ready to go.  So far I have replaced the hard drive twice, one of the CD/DVD Drives, and the video card twice.  Why can't they come up with a system and stay with it for both hardware and software for a longer time.

My wife's machine which is newer is running 7 with no issues at all. We never had to deal with Vista.

78 I don't mind Vista. It's as stable as any version of Window's I've played with, and has a few improvements that I do like. I have no reason to 'upgrade' to win7, or win8, so I'll just stick with what I have until it's time to build a new computer....and even then, I might just go with Linux anyway....and dual boot to Vista for Window's compatibility.

I know this might negatively affect poor Mr. Bill Gates, and his lovely wife, but, meh....he can go nosh on a bag of dicks.

83 There are still failures in Win 7. Even explorer has multiple flaws, like the PITA 4-way scrolling directory list and the delayed updates that move items just as you're clicking on them. Or that you can't turn off the preview *reading* feature, so if you insert a DVD with a bunch of avi files it reads *all* the files to create video previews even if you turn previews off - and then if you refresh for any reason it does it *again*. There's quite a list of those, actually. Also, and *nobody* does this right, the OS should be able to prevent focus-stealing. They just refuse to make that a priority. Also, AFAIK, you can only *lock* the volume control and prevent apps from changing it with a $40 commercial program. Certain combinations of activities can leave you *constantly* futzing with the volume control. And so on.

86 Never use automatic update.

disable it and then monthly or if you hear something bad on the news go to the site where you can pick what updates you want installed.

choose custom installation, express is all the updates you just get to see what they are but can't keep them from being installed. Custom installation lets you see what they're going to do and eliminate any update you don't like from the list.

I always kept IE from  being updated until a piece of software I bought required it's presence. that blew my ie6 installation so I went to firefox. Firefox has gone overboard with updates also but you can get older versions or just not update to the newest.

I'm only at ff8 now and it works fine.

I had to laugh, microsoft won't let you update the os using FF browser. What a gyp. do they really think i'm going to go ie just because?

If someone came out with a nice easy install of Linux, I'd try that again.

Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That at April 13, 2013 11:14 AM (Kpn/z)

87 Sometimes, on start up, it will shut down and restart 3 times, on the 3rd try it beeps and...nothing, no logo, just blankness. Something else to check, in the hardware department, which is most likely, is the fan. Especially because you mention that after giving the machine a rest it seems to work. Give it a listen on start-up. I had a laptop that I refused to give up on with a shitty fan, so I used my dust buggy vac and blew a blast of air at the fan at startup to get the fan running *just* enough to fool the BIOS.

95 XP will "develop" new vulnerabilities if they stop security updates - rather, if enough people keep using it, other people will find exploits. Unless a 3rd party keeps updating, the best thing someone could do is create a UAC implementation for it (you can kind of do that with built-in network security features most people don't use). Eventually it will be like other old OSes - hardcore fan base and no one else cares.

You should probably get their security updates. There's holes on stuff other than IE.

If you're very careful or not adventurous than you may get by without them. I would update asap because after next year you won't be able to.

You can also still get sp3 (service pack 3) which covers all the updates up to about '09 I think. If anyone knows if they've released a new service pack speak up.

The MS site may tell you that also.

Just don't let the updater load anything it wants, really look hard at what they want to install. Reject ie7/ie8. If you want them, you can get them separately.

128 People compare the Win8 thing to the Ribbon in the new Office software, but it goes back a lot further than that. Pretty much the kind of person who gets to head a big redesign is the kind of person who insists upon themselves and is a pushy boor. Nobody with the "hey, whatever works for you" attitude runs huge projects. Famous examples include a big *must upgrade* revision to eBay's software that was hugely unpopular (and godawful slow), IBM has had their bizarre issues as well, pretty much every big developer. Heck, it even happens to games. EA hasn't been the Worst Company in America for three years running for nothing.

I'm pretty rough on them, so the odds are I'll break them -- dropping them, spilling something on them, dog attacks, etc. It's amazing what you can get for $400 these days. Only complaint about the cheapies -- no SSDs and loud fans. SSDs are slowly trickling down. Maybe another 5 years before they are standard in even the cheapies. not sure about the loud fans.

I wound up with it. Vista started doing things like crashing the taskbar, forcing reboots of explorer.exe. Eventually, I got fed up with it, and 'upgraded' to XP. Ran that for a year or two. Then the front half of the harddrive went bad--destroyed the XP install, so I partitioned the back half of the harddrive for storage, put in a live CD version of Puppy Linux, and have been using it for the years since. Frankly, I'm done with Windows. The bloat is ridiculous and security is always an issue. But in my experience, Vista sucked.

141 Pretty much the kind of person who gets to head a big redesign is the kind of person who insists upon themselves and is a pushy boor.

Nobody with the "hey, whatever works for you" attitude runs huge projects.

142 Anybody know how to fix Steam games? I tried to play Half-Life for the first time in months. Steam upgraded itself a whole lot and now I got nothing but trouble. The display is so large I can't see the Exit button (I CTRL-ALT-DEL to quit) and while playing the game I can only turn left. I tried forcing the video mode through my Steam account but no luck. Same with -autoconfig and -safe. It looks like I'll just have to quit playing Steam games. I'm sure not gonna shell out $50 for a new one when I can't get my old games to play.

144 I quit using Ebay as much after than.

They redesigned the sort selections and the summary thing.

Hated it.

I've noticed one thing about Computer tech/internet companies.

The better they are the more likely you'll find an easy way to contact them and/or send them feedback.

The harder or the more nonexistent sending feedback or comments to a company, the more likely they suck and will take you money and pull your pants down and run away laughing.

Amazon after YEARS still hasn't figured out that people might like to or know they have to jump to a certain point in the list of search pages to find what they're looking for. Do they give you that option. NOOOOOOOO.

Just try to suggest it to them and they'll answer with some polite gobbledy gook and you wind up with nothing. Not even a kiss.

174 Its all that shit living on top of it that's where the chaos lives. Posted by: @PurpAv at April 13, 2013 04:01 PM (/gHaE) The problem is, that's a misfeature, not a bug. That's how they intended it to be, and that's how it is. The funny thing is, from an abstract philosophical POV, I run two machines that are very much like Linux - they're Macs. Graphical interface over a unixlike OS. But they're totally different in the *details* from Linux. Heck, they're not even that fast (everybody always updates to the newest OSX they can even if they shouldn't). But basic tasks are easy to do, software is *fairly* available to specifically do what I want and is well-configured and easy to set up, and the interface is consistent. Every so often I set up a Linux machine for some task or another, it always ends up being non-Linux, though. I cut my teeth on Unix, mind you, worked for years with it, so it's not that the concepts are alien to me. But I was paid to do that, I'm not paid to do this. Maybe a NAS. If I wanted a PC-based firewall. Something like that I'd use Linux Set-and-forget. Not a daily use machine. It's not that I run things simple, I make tons of little changes and try new software all the time, almost every day. It's just easier to do that everywhere else.

When I transfer files to a DVD, I notice that the 'size' of the files is often different...from the size they are on the computer, to the size they are on the disk.

The file size is usually a few bits bigger after it's saved on the disk.

186 I'm starting to like Windows 8.  There are some nice things about it.  I still think Windows 7 was better on the whole, but I'm growing used to 8.  My main irritation is with the right-side controls, sometimes they pop up when I don't want them to, other times I can't get them to appear.

My main home PC came with Vista, and it was pretty terrible.  Things wouldn't work.  Some graphics programs I had to minimize then maximize to get them to display properly.  UAC was incredibly intrusive and made a lot of stuff harder than it should have been.  Windows 7 fixed all that--I've often thought of W7 as Vista with Service Pack 1.

195 Win8 gets a bad rap, mostly from people who I imagine haven't even used it for 5 minutes, but it works great and I've been very happy with it. People got scared off by the start screen because they refuse to admit that the start menu was clumsy and inefficient. Getting rid of it was an improvement. Vista got a bad rap for high system requirements for the most part, in addition to some stability issues that were ironed out quickly. Manufacturers packing it with underpowered systems and ancient computers upgrading to it ran it poorly. It was never as bad as popular opinion tried to make it sound, and the security overhaul was long overdue. As great as win xp was at the time, its security model was positively archaic and caused incredible losses of time and money due to its ease of being compromised. The world will be a better place when xp is finally dead.

If your HD is 4096 then small files will take up more space there, if it's 1024 they will take up more space on the DVD. Think in terms of shelves. You can only have one item per shelf, if the item is smaller than the shelf you have wasted space. Kind of hard to explain *why* that is without getting technicalk or droning on for hours.

And almost every one of them can do a live promo now with was very unusual in the 80s. But yeah, it was pretty offensive to me too. The only way they were able to get the tea party heels over was for them to conflate immigration with illegal immigration. Of course. If they were to tell the truth about the tea party, it would make for a bad heel angle.

238 from the epic Yegge rant linked above -

Jeff Bezos is an infamous micro-manager. He micro-manages every single pixel of Amazon's retail site. He hired Larry Tesler, Apple's Chief Scientist and probably the very most famous and respected human-computer interaction expert in the entire world, and then ignored every g*ddamn thing Larry said for three years until Larry finally -- wisely -- left the company. Larry would do these big usability studies and demonstrate beyond any shred of doubt that nobody can understand that frigging website, but Bezos just couldn't let go of those pixels, all those millions of semantics-packed pixels on the landing page. They were like millions of his own precious children. So they're all still there, and Larry is not.

Posted by: T. Hunter at April 13, 2013 12:33 PM (EZl54)

239 It's not a huge size difference...just a few KB's on each one.

Don't look at the approximations the file mangler may give in an icon view, look at a specific file size numbers from a "details" view.

What Merovign is talking about is allocation granularity for particular media...

This is something I've wanted to do a nerd post about for a while now as normal people can get some performance gains by having a bit of understanding about it.

Ex. if you got 2 drives and use one as a dedicated swap device, tweaking the NTFS allocation size when formatting it can be a big win.

240 16 Seeing how they are fixin' to pry XP out of my cold dead hands next spring, I just bought my first W7 box in January to start playing with. I don't hate it.

---------

I don't hate it either, but I prefer XP. One of the things I have on my XP box at work is a buttload of CMD windows in various sizes to deal with various things I do. Can't do that easily in 7 because you can only have *one* link to a program in the Start menu.

Also much prefer XP Paint to Win 7 Paint. I do lots of little illustrations for my manuals in Paint. On Win 7, Paint will anti-alias text unless you disable anti-aliasing for *the whole bloody operating system*.

243 Macs:
10.2 sucked big time. You just didn't hear about how bad until 10.3 came out.
Apple loves to decide that perfectly good hardware is obsolete. That's why they dumped support for their printer port in OS X.  I could dig up more recent examples, like deciding that relatively new Power PCs would no longer be upgradable.

PC:
no support for pppoe connectiods prior to XP. Vista support for that is crappy too, although XP can handle it. We have WiMax type towers that need a connectoid if you don't have a router.
Vista has the worst wireless support. You have to delete the damn profile to change the stored wifi password. If you just change it, it doesn't take and you can't connect.

Win 8: No POP email in the mail app. More stuff buried even deeper in the OS. What the hell is that "charms" shit? Who decided that people didn't need menus any more. I spent 45 minutes Friday trying to talk a woman into configuring the mail app. She couldn't find where you set up a new account in it.

We run XP on our work computers. I really could use something that will run Win8 so I can truly learn the damn thing. But if I had it installed on a computer, I wouldn't use it. I have an old Thinkpad T25 that runs Crunch Bang Linux. Ubuntu got too bloated for it. As for iphones, I've never had a problem with an update and I'm on my second one. I always buy one generation behind on Apple products. The bugs have been worked out and you can usually get the cool accessories at a discount.

253 IOW - the puter's file systems are NOT like a box you chuck a bunch of 1-byte sized marbles into.

Its more like you put the marbles into bags that hold 1k, 2k, 4k marbles each, then chuck those fixed sized bags into the file system's box.

If you only need 2 marbles in a bag, it's still gonna take a big bag to hold them.

262 I got Windows 8. It's the first OS release from Microsoft that I actually LIKE. And I like it a lot. I guess I'm a contrary indicator to the times, although the release I hated more than all was Vista and it was roundly scorned. If you haven't tried Win 8, don't believe all these people saying the interface is unworkable and broken, or only works well with touch. Baloney. That's over-the-top ridiculous. It does take a little time getting used to. Like, 10 minutes. Maybe 20. Now, going from the old Gnome desktop to Unity on Ubuntu? Or the old Gnome to the newer Gnome on Fedora? That's far, far more of a demand than anything Windows 8 throws at the user.

268 Ok, I like Wrestlemania this year. Yeah the Swagger racist, Tea Partier angle was offensive. They hired a new left-wing soap opera writer as the head writer recently. Not sure if he's behind it. The gimmick didn't work though. They tried to pick a fight with Beck, but that failed. Punk vs Taker was a great match. In real life Punk is a pretty outspoken left-wing atheist prick. He's a good pro wrestler though, so I try to ignore his left-wingness. Mick Foley is super left-wing --- though not a prick about it. Keven Nash is a big left-wing prick. Kane is a libertarian cool guy. HBK is a big NRA conservative Christian guy. JBL is a big free-marketer. It's a mix.

276 But with the cost of magnetic memory being what it is do you really need to tweak your storage?

buy another damn drive.

Ps. the slow down at shutdown may be a program helper loaded for something you may not realize uses one.

I've found all kinds of helper programs that came with the front end program I loaded. These are updaters and keyloggers and net searchers. I think win media player uses one to retrieve titles from the internet. whether you happen to be using windows media player or not the helper file is loaded into memory and some of those helper files are also trackers and send info to various other places when they shut down.

that may be where the delay is. Try a  safe mode startup and see how much stuff is loaded in memory. then shut down and see how much faster it is.

Only problem is that you can have a difficult time trying to keep those helpers from loading and if you succeed then when you want them you have to reboot.

It's why I hate Nazi programmers who don't want the user to have any choices about what happens and what gets loaded.

Posted by: notsothoreau at April 13, 2013 04:36 PM (Lqy/e) While that was personally very annoying (I have two PPC machines running OSX), it was understandable. They changed platforms, and were rapidly getting to the point where even if they tried to force developers to code for both incompatible CPUs, the new software wouldn't run adequately on it anyway. If PPC was going to go, it had to actually *go*. Annoying for me, but they'd risk crashing the whole enterprise trying to support that hardware. It would end up being like trying to code Windows for a Z80. That being said, the OS transition seemed sudden to Mac users who were still a little unsettled that they lost OS9 support. Things did not change as quickly in the Mac universe.

I scrolled through a few some smaller ones...ones with a couple of pages...and couldn't see any difference at all.

293 WWE did the Swagger Tea Party angle to try and get Del Rio over. They were trying to copy the JBL-Eddie Guerrero angle that worked so well. JBL's skit where he went to the border and personally kicked Mexicans out of the country was great shock TV. It made him a beloved bad guy. The Swagger angle was both offensive to us righties -- and not offensive enough. They should have ramped up the racism to be shocking. Instead they just teased it. Weak sauce. Can't be outrageously shocking without a little outrageous shock.

297 I loved Win 2K.  I kept a machine with Win 2K as long as I could, but a big part of what I do involves using SQL Server databases, and I gotta keep up on the new versions and that requires newer OS's and larger memory support.

Vista sucks.. it just plain sucks.  Win 7 is ok if you turn off UAC.  BTW - you cannot fully turn off UAC in Win 8! Surprise!

I'm still using XP mostly at work for development, with virtual machines of various varieties for testing, etc.

My current home machine is Win 8, and with the "Classic Shell" add-on that gives you a start button and boots to the desktop, I just love it.  Fast and stable.

BTW - "Classic Shell" can also be installed on Win 7 and you can get the look and feel of XP in explorer, etc.  Nice.. and FREE!

309 Yeah, business that are mainly independent contractors -- wrestlers, long haul truckers -- tend towards libertarian/right of center. But the younger generation of wrestlers appear to be more left-wing. The "indie" wrestling scene is very left-wing. That's where guys like Punk and Daniel Bryan came from. The Swagger/Tea Party angle is one WWE copied from the indies. There's a guy who wrestles as Jan Brewer's (AZ governor) racist anti-Mexican son. He wrestles throughout the southwest -- and Mexico. He makes a living getting his ass kicked by the Mexican heroes.

313 The thing about Apple's PowerPC to Intel transition: for a long, long time the Apple fanbois always held out that their machines were superior to Intel based ones. They had some merit in that claim, too. The PowerPC excelled over Intel's in a few areas. Those in the Wintel world were roundly mocked and scorned by the fanbois, on account of general shabbiness and lack of sophistication. Then Jobs announced the divorce from IBM and the bedhopping to Intel, shocking everybody. Those same fanbois, who just the day before would pooh-pooh Intel chips the whole day long, raced to embrace the change and to hail Jobs' continuing visionary spirit. They switched on a dime. It was like the election of 2008, when all of a sudden we went from mass protests over the war to a dim perception that a war was actually going on.

321 Modern audiences seem very uncomfortable with any race angle in wrestling. And WWE's advertisers definitely don't like it. The evil foreigner who hates America was a great gimmick for almost the entire history of America. Evil Germans, evil Japanese, evil Russians, evil Iranians. But they are too pussy to have an evil Muslim who hates America these days. Nowadays they would make the Iron Sheik change his gimmick or be a good guy.

Posted by: The Hobo Wears Prada (Team Plover) at April 13, 2013 04:43 PM (jopHG) First of all, I'm pretty sure that's 32-bit not 16-bit. The new OSX requires 64-bit. The following thread has several links involving bootloaders and essentially setting your Mac up as a Hackintosh, and firmware updates / replacements. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1332259 Depending on the video card it may not be supported. 347 WWE is determined to have a Mexican hero. They are trying really, really hard to make Del Rio their Mexican Hulk Hogan. WWE plays demographics hard. Unashamedly. When Italians used to be more proud of their ethnicity -- WWE gave them Bruno Sammartino. Now there are more Mexicans, so WWE gives them Del Rio. WWE will always have at least one white babyface, one black, and one hispanic. And with hispanics they always make sure they have both some Mexicans and some Puerto Ricans. In the future I expect more Chinese and Indians. Their model is to try to have a pair -- a good X and a bad X from each large country/race/language group. They need a bad guy Mexican now that they've turned Del Rio.

Setup your router firewall properly and don't open attachments in unknown sender emails and that pretty much covers you.

History, actually.

Yes, I know Microsoft Security Essentials came out after I moved to Linux.

After years of updating McAfeeNorton bloatware which rendered the OS almost unusable, and attempting to use pretty good Eatern Euro "free"ware as a replacement ,  Microsoft came out with MSE which (almost) protects it's OS. Most of the time.

For my personal usage, it was too little, too late.

372 I tried the Norton AV once a year or two after W2K came out...it was absolutely evil and rife with bugs on multi-CPU machines.  Removed it within a few days and never went back

Note to testers -- substituting a hyperthread CPU for a real multi-CPU system when it comes to checking for semaphore bugs DOES NOT WORK.

378 Yeah, it's looking like the people of Polynesia interbred with a long extinct hominid race -- the Denisovans. Denisovans are like Neanderthals. They were replaced/interbred with Homo Sapiens. I have a question and figure this is the perfect thread to get the answer.

I am about to listen to Brainwave Entrainment mp3s which I've used before and were very beneficial. These are actual mp3s on the computer and I'd like to transfer them to a CD so I can listen on a CD player.

The manual has a caveat "Interfering with the frequencies in the audio" - Playing around with the frequencies in the audio is going to impair your progress. The file must be listened to in the format given, and any conversions must ensure that the correct bitrate and sample frequencies are maintained.

Question: Burning the mp3 to a CD won't interfere with any of the frequencies in the audio, right? I'm not changing the file, I'm just burning it to a CD.

Thanks so much!

Posted by: Flatbush Joe at April 13, 2013 05:18 PM (ZPrif) That happened all over and it's not well-known. There was a time when at least 6-7 advanced hominids lived on Earth at once, it's just that all off them (officially) died out before we started doing things like Writing That Shit Down. So we kind of did live in a world like the Tolkienesque multi-species fantasy world with at least some genetic compatability - we just didn't know about it until after we wrote the first of those stories. Which may well have been grossly distorted versions of oral histories from a time when it was sort of real. I say sort of because there probably not magic-using fairies and short people who see in the dark, etc. The funny thing is, if you look at the others we know about, *we* turn out to be the elves.

400 Just retired the 4 yr old laptop with XP for a new one with Win 7 pro and the ability to run an XP virtual machine.  After ten years, it is time to embrace the ribbon and move from Office 2003 to 2010  ...2013 not so much.

Drivers, Office, Auto Cad, 3DS Max, audio and video editors, programming languages, about 15,000 project images all alive and well.  SSD and main disk drive now backed up in two locations.   I feel like I have given birth.

- - -

Microsoft wants to force people into apps, so they can get their cut.  They tried taking the ability to write desktop programs out of the free .NET development tools until the developer community pretty much threatened to walk.  They made the Office 2013 license for one non-transferable PC, until they relented on that.  1.5 stars out of dozens of reviews on Amazon may have sunk into their heads that their customers were giving the "nudge" a hearty "screw you."

God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind.  This also implies that there are people that are not of a sound mind.  Some of these folks are programmers (and some are politicians)

When you use a piece of software, your mind has to track along the same lines as the person who wrote the software.  When software really irritates the heck out of you, it probably is not your fault!

I have read hundreds of blog entries where people argue with a MS product manager over how obnoxious the choice of three color schemes are in Office 2013.  1) they only reluctantly care and 2) it is probably so things would look better on a tablet using SkyDrive --which they also want to shove in your face until you buy an Office 360 subscription.

So when people are pissing down my neck and telling me it is the glorious future, I have a problem with that, whether it is politics or software.

401 Flatbush Joe, what do you think of Tito Ortiz?  Always loved that dude.

Posted by: Peaches at April 13, 2013 01:32 PM (8lmkt)

402 Right, there is increasing evidence of an actual "hobbit" like hominid race. And not just pygmies. But a sort of short, stocky version of Neanderthals. Eventually we'll be able to deduce a lot of long lost hominids by the genetic legacy in homo sapien DNA.

Posted by: Flatbush Joe at April 13, 2013 01:33 PM (ZPrif)

403 I'm still running W2K on four machines at work. The updates for Firefox and Adobe reader have stopped coming, but it still runs OK. All the critical machines are running XP, which may soon be a problem. I have one new W7 installation, and I do like it. The XP mode works pretty well for our old Access 2K database, but it's a little glitchy when it comes to which window is on top. I never even touched Vista or W8 or anything mac.

Posted by: Flatbush Joe at April 13, 2013 05:33 PM (ZPrif) There are actually several identified in "story terms" but not really genetically, from around the world. Some may turn out to have been genetically damaged families rather than a whole subspecies or species, but it's an interesting topic - especially if you like mysteries. And you'd better like mysteries, 'cause the answers are few. Also, you'd better like the Ancient Aliens guy, 'cause he'll show up sooner or later.

413 There was an attempt many years ago to ASCIIfy some websites - or rather, to make a compatible version for ASCII viewers. Partly for the accessibility issue for screen readers or whatever, partly for nostalgia - but partly because Fast As Shit Through A Goose. I was actually looking for ASCII browsers (like Lynx from the old days) recently for that reason, but it's mainly plugins in bloated new browsers. I think there's still room for a really fast, simple interface. Someone will jump up and yell "LINUX," but it's not really that anymore. There are closer distros, but still not quite. There's an assembler-based modern OS called Menuet that actually fits on a floppy disk, but, again, not compatible with anything. Also kind of even less elegant than say Qbasic.

430 I ignore personal lives with athletes. I admire the historical greatness of Tiger's talent. I enjoy seeing the all time greats perform. I feel bad for Kobe's injury yesterday, too. And Kobe was accuses of far worse than anything Tiger did. Kobe's accuser was liar, though. Kobe mainly just pulled a Tiger with a crazy girl who made a false rape allegation. But Tiger's shot yesterday was almost perfect.

437 I have Vista on an Acer laptop (Aspire 5610Z if you must know), I had to completely wipe it and install it again (without the Acer management software), reload all the drivers, and then (very important) shut off automatic updating. If it ever updates it will only run for a maximum of 10 minutes, and then it will shut down as if someone has pulled the plug and dropped the battery on it. No one can explain why.

Other than that...yeah, works great...but I'm not into gaming or anything, so it's not like I push it to the limit or anything.

448 Calling all Morons and 'Ettes who are in their cups and feel like wagin' a little war.

Currently, under the story that is now trending on the Washington Post, the libs are busy trying to bury any conservative comment that is anti-abortion. Surprising, huh?

Anyway, I spent an hour or two batting around libs and ran two off. I mocked them outrageously for using their cut and paste names as responses (examples: Westboro, American Taliban, etc). It is easy to spot these stupidos who hide in their Mama's basements and swarm, tag-team style, to conservative comments. It is almost like they work in shifts (from their names and my anthropology study for two afternoons). I mocked them, repeatedly, and they fled. I even invoked the great blog, Ace of Spades, when one kept calling conservatives "morons." I told him that was a badge of honor on this blog.

So, anyway, the point of this news bulletin is this: if you ever feel like batting around a libtard, go to WaPo, register with bogus information, and do what you do here best: mock. It is sort of cathartic.

Now, back to your regularly scheduled moron stuff. Love you.

449 Pale Rider @419: There's a utility that rolls a Kindle back to factory default. You lose whatever books, music, apps the previous user paid for, but they're all tied to his/her Amazon account, so they'd eventually go wonky anyway without updates. There's no user-configurable hardware, so no driver issues or anything after a wipe.

The wall wart with my v1 Kindle Fire had a pretty flimsy wire leading to the mini-USB jack, but the $7 cable for syncing/charging fromn py PC's USB port was remarkable sturdy.

When I upgraded to a FireHD, it wasn't worth the effort to sell the v1, so I gave it to a small child whose parents curse me daily. (A constant flood of "Buy me this book or movie, mommy?")

The internal storage on the older models is minimal, but it's easy to keep your device groomed. Anything you bought from Amazon can be re-downloaded free forever and anything you sideloaded from your PC can be easily backed up to DVD-ROM.

451

Does anyone know if its a PITA to set up a 2nd hand kindle or no problem? My dad has expressed interest in getting a kindle, apparently the pawn shop has a stack of them. I'm a bit leery that it would be a time sink and the new ones from Amazon are pretty cheap too. But perhaps I'm being paranoid.

I think a basic kindle is under 80 bucks right now, brand new. I think I'd go that route first, and probably go with one of their new backlit 'paper white' models.

It's supposed to be fairly easy to unlink a used kindle from a specific user...but I've never tried it....though, if I were to buy one used, I'd read anything interesting on the device, before I attempted to reset it.

The search in Vista worked just fine. It was configured by default to search the areas where users are supposed to store stuff. By limiting indexing to those areas it reduced overhead.

Changing the configuration to include more areas in the index, up to the entire volume, was a trivial control panel operation.

179The Gnome fanatics went ready to declare jihad over Ubuntu's dropping Gnome in favor of the Unity interface.

Gnome is a UI designed for some alien species, not humans. KDE is a cardboard pimpmobile. Both are shocking resource hogs.

The Gnome fanatics probably like Emacs too. The only editor that comes with thumb screws AND a comfy chair.

Which is the main reason why I never went to Linux. The UI just sucked when I was playing around with RedHat 9/10, so I pretty much gave up on it.

Windows is playing the Star Trek Movie game. Every other OS out of Redmond sucks. If you start with Windows 3.1/WFW3.11, and progress through to W8, the odd releases work, and the even releases suck.

3.1=good; 95=bad; etc. W2k was the only one that bucked that trend, but it was a transition from NT4/98 into a unified OS package that could function in standalone, peer-to-peer networks, or client-server networks. W2k ran great, but XP was so much better.

I still run XP on my laptops, and Server2k3 on most of my server farm. At work, we MUST use XP for one of our critical software packages, because it and W7 refuse to play nicely, even in "XP compatibility mode".

The things you describe here and elsewhere suggest you got a mangled Registry. I'd look into repairing that. You may find a lot of stuff that refuses to use the setting you select stop that behavior.

Mangling the Registry was a big problem with third party apps on XP. One of the primary reasons existing software stopped working on Vista was that Microsoft took what had previously be recommendations going back to Win2K and made them enforced laws within the OS. Intuit was a big offender there. They would use the Registry as a means to let their own third party developers link stuff into QuickBooks, like industry specific packages.

This was a big problem as the Registry was intended to be a location that gets written to rarely and read often. There were similar reasons for having Program Files and Program Data where XP only had Program Files. The idea is that if an app completely loses it while writing data it doesn't kill the whole install. In a properly designed app you should be able to completely erase the folder in Program Data and it will only cause the customs settings and such to be lost and the folder recreated by the app when it runs next.

This was a long existing structure in systems like Unix that always had to be designed with multi-user environments in mind, meaning the individual users could only write to an area set aside for them. Coming from the anything goes personal computer world, Windows lacked any way to create any genuine enforced limits on the user. NT had the infrastructure but it went largely unused for over a decade due to the worry over alienating users. The more time went by the harder it became to implement these longstanding CS practices without breaking a lot of stuff.

So, a lot of complaints about Vista were from things that should have been there from the beginning if you wanted to have a serious OS that protected itself from Stupid User Tricks. If something like OS X had existed in 1995 and had a sane company behind it, Windows would have faded away.

And Microsoft would have been good with it. They tried to get out of the OS business for many years. They thought OS/2 was going to be the OS that made the micro industry ready for prime time but it couldn't happen because IBM was at war with itself, with personnel doing things to undermine the OS/2 effort that would have gotten them fired at Microsoft.

506 Correction to previous comments...I have now run off three liberal wackos, spewing crap, on WaPo Gosnell blog entry. Three, from mocking, never using profanity...simply mocking. Cathartic, I tell you. Join me if you want to swat them around. I have done this only once before with Benghazi. They usually rule their little kingdom and it blows their feeble minds when you mock them.

Some people hated the animated characters but I've lost count of the number of times I've brought a repaired machine back to a user and stayed to make sure everything was working for them, to find the #1 complaint was that the dog or cat in Office was gone and they didn't remember how they got it in the first place.

This was usually with a machine that was handed to me in a completely inoperable state, so I couldn't be aware of what custom choices to restore.

The research was right but didn't factor for how reacted adversely among the power users who drove opinion. The users who liked the animated characters LOVED them. The real problem was implementation. The help system wasn't versatile enough to handle the range of personalities it would encounter, such as thus who bristle at the most subtle offering of a suggestion, never mind an in your face cartoon character.

This kind of issue is coming up again in Windows 8.

So Win 8 is MS's attempt to get out of the OS business?    = P

510 "Would you rather have the Windows 8 bizarro world interface or..."

Almost fifteen years ago, I did some design work for an outfit that was attempting to produce a handheld computer something like a tablet, and it ran Windows CE. When the iPad first came out and I got the chance to play around with it, I finally understood why the tablets didn't catch on the first time - Windows CE.

With Windows 8, what exactly is Microsoft trying to achieve, some sort of hybrid desktop/tablet OS?

Different file systems can have different requirements at the lower levels.

Say the lowest level sector is 1024 bytes. Each sector has a certain amount of those bytes set aside for various functions like labeling the sector and pointing to the next sector that comprises the file. So the same file on two different file systems (NTFS for the hard drive and probably UDF for the DVD) can report a different size for the exact same file. (Way back in the 80s, it was a touted feature of the Amiga's file system that each sector pointed to both the previous sector in the file and the next sector in the file. This made it a lot easier to recover data if a disk were damaged. But that also meant that there was a slightly greater portion of each sector given over to stuff besides the user data.)

Depending on how detailed the display of files is set, the difference may not be obvious for a small file. For a big file, like a good sized chunk of video, it's going to be more obvious. You can also run into a situation where the OS uses one format and an app uses another, making it hard to tell if they agree on the file size.

No, it's their attempt to have a unified approach that cover all of the market segments. Which sounds great in concept but has issues in execution. It is a core decision whether you're going to have multiple OSes with a shared base (Apple) or try to make a single system that is versatile enough to be usable in a variety of environments, which is what Microsoft sought.

A lot of this is driven by a company's motivators. Apple is nearly non-existent in the big business market, so it didn't matter to them if users had a completely different UI on a portable device than on their desktop computer. Meanwhile, business users are huge piece of Microsoft's market and a tablet with a Microsoft OS has to require little or no training for a cubicle drone to start using it as an alternative to their PC.

Microsoft had already been down the road of trying to make the desktop usable on handheld devices. Pen and touch input had been in Windows in increasing amounts since the 3.11 days, and WinCE attempted to bring a familiar Windows desktop to much smaller devices. None of it produced any serious numbers. The most successful WinCE devices were such that you might never know it was running WinCE if you didn't catch the copyright notices at the right moment. (A lot of GPS devices are still WinCE, for example.)

I don't have a problem with Windows 8. It's running on bother my newer desktop and laptop. But that doesn't mean I cannot think of a lot of ways to improve on it. These have been widely discussed and hopefully some of them will come up in the Blue release.

To me it's sadly funny that so many people have freaked out over the change from the Start menu to the Start screen. I have Win7 and Win8 desktops on a KVM switch and have no difficulty moving between them. I find it far more jarring when I have to switch between Windows and Mac, mainly because I've never liked the 'One menu bar to rule them all' approach of the Finder. But it doesn't stop me in my tracks as some claim with Win8. What is really sad is I can remember how people reacted to the Start menu when it first appeared in Windows 95. Some people hated it with an intense passion and continued to use the old Program Manager and even altered their systems to run it automatically. (Just type PROGMAN at the Run command.)

Not because it was better. It wasn't by any sane measure. But it was what they knew and they couldn't bear to change. I cannot imagine living like that. I don't embrace change for change's sake but I don't shy away from it either.

It didn't matter what the OS was back then. The hardware was nowhere near good enough to produce a device that would appeal to the mainstream. THere were a lot of externalities that had to come together as well to make such devices attractive to a large audience, such as widespread fast wireless data connections.

If you had iOS on what could be offered for hardware in 1998, it would have still been a massive failure, just with compliments for having the right idea on the OS side. This is essentially what happened with the Apple Newton.

514 I had Vista.  I am on Windows 7 now.

7 has this wonderful thing where it starts up pretty fast.  With Vista I could turn it on, go downstairs and turn the coffee on, go and shower, shave, get dressed, get coffee....

And Vista still was not done starting up.

There are some things that the software boys really need to learn.  Such as the consumer really wants the obvious stuff (starts up, doesn't collapse, etc.) and can go hang all of the nice little things that are far under-surface to most residential use.

Understand...a lot of people use this to send funny pictures of cats.  Now, work from there.

515 I do have to say Vista did get a bad rap. It was the lack of drivers at launch and the fact that peripheral manufacturers were all "Drivers for that? HA! Fuck you, buy new shit.".

You mentioned you are going to do some Windows Phone development. Got news for ya sport, if you want to develop for WP8 - You HAVE to run Win8 to run the tools to developer unlock and deploy apps to the phone. Vista or Win7 is fine for developing WP7 apps. They run fine on WP8 but again, how ya gonna get 'em on the phone?

Just bite the bullet and go out and spend a couple of bills on a nice 256mb SSD and make it the Win8 drive. Boot up in Win8 when you have too.

Me, I personally like Win8 but hate how it's so halfway there. Either kill the desktop of go all the way Metro. Yet another fucking genius committee decision that one was. As a developer, it's fun to write for and sure makes it easy to make shit pretty and integrated. Make no mistake - this is the path Windows is on - get used to it now and learn it.

I'm sure you've moved on Monster, but just in case. The down (undercoat not guard hairs) of even a domestic short-hair is generally spinnable, with care. Naturally the hair of longer cats is easier to spin.

Here is a caveat on used kindles when it is registered to an account for streaming music or movies a reset doesn't always clear that and you will get an error message if you try to stream.  You can call Amazon and they can manually clear it in the database, but they will deny that.  Tell them they are full of shit I know they can because I used to have access to the database.  They will give in if you are persistent.

518 I know that I am late, but I scrambled 1/2 dozen windows XP systems. Win7 has been very stable, so stable that I run it on my Mac in Parallels I know a few in our IT department that tried 8, and went right back to 7. I tried Vista, and went back to XP, Vista had way to many driver issues - like a lot of vendors didn't write them (at the time).

520 When Vista rolled out it was disastrous because the device driver support wasn't there and the OS just wasn't ready. With the patches and updates it runs just as smooth and stable as 7.

521 I have a desktop with win7, a laptop with Vista and a new Frankenstein monster laptop with win 8. I made the mistake of buying the new machine with win 8 without a touch screen. Not that that would matter. If you want to dance around like post adolescences with adult ADD as depicted on the MS Win 8 TV adds and flash your pc like a kindergarten school child with crayons showing their mommies . "look what I can do", spend hours wondering why just by touching something with the weight less than that of a butterfly's left nut, your screen flashes, changes, goes away, and brings you those wonderful pop up adds that we all so hate, then go ahead ruin your remaining years, buy win 8. Taking away the start menu, changing icons to tiles, calling tools, CHARMS, remove the X box in the upper right hand corner to close a window and replacing it with the oh so clever move that requires you to run the arrow to the top, left click and hold and drag the window to the bottom. I could write a volume on why I hate Win 8. Oh and when I bought this diabolical machine I tried to get it with Win 7, not possible. MS has spoken. .

522 I'm very late to this thread and have to say I hate Windows 7.  Have been using it at work the last 6 months and have not gotten used to the things I think are just a plain downgrade from XP... the folders, the search, the feminine system font, the pointless transparencies and glowing, the non-intuitive start menu.  I hate it all.
