— Open Blogger Here's something to ponder...
Is Windows Vista actually better than the rep its gotten?
Sure, there were teething problem and such when first released. There was a lot of new code there beyond XP, but a fully patched up install on TODAY's multi-core multi-Ghz hardware (or even 5 years ago hardware), with 4G or so of memory is NOT hideously slow or particularly unstable. An old Pentium 4 with a 1G of memory, and an 80G drive? Well...that's different. THAT sucks ass very much running Vista.
Would you rather have the Windows 8 bizarro world interface or the Vista rolling whorehouse pimpmobile interface? I'm getting kinda comfy with the pimpmobile in a machine I'm setting up to do some Windows Phone phone app development on.
Windows 7 is kinda like Vista minus the sketchy stability (at the time) bloatware glitz, plus moar drivers. I like Windows 7. W7 has a spartan Windows 2000 ambiance -- it doesn't get in your way.
I stuck with Windows 2000 from its release through early 2012. I had it on dual-P133 machines, dual Pentium Pro's, some Pentium II/III machines and found it to be pretty stable on officially supported hardware.
In 12 years of use I can count the number of W2K BSOD's I had on one hand, and all of those were due to busted hardware or some unsupported crap I was trying to prod into functioning with witchcraft and animal sacrifices.
The thing about W2K, and Windows 7 is they run OK on the hardware of their respective eras. There wasn't a big "expectation gap" like there was with Vista.
Suppose Microsoft had done a XP "second edition" with more hardware/driver support and delayed Vista a couple of years until hardware developments caught up with its voracious appetite for consuming hardware?
Would our impressions of it be different? I think so.
I know at the time I read the minimum hardware specs for Vista and thought "Wow, I don't have any machines in inventory with that!", so I passed on upgrading. If I did have a minimum machine, I'd have been disappointed anyway.
But today, you can find machines literally in the trash that have specs to run Vista just fine. In fact, the machine I just installed it on was dumpster dived. I replaced one bad memory stick that made it act like it was stone freaking dead, and it sprang to life again. And the replacement stick came from another dived machine, so expenditure of instantaneous cash for repair was $0.00.
I needed a brief respite from thinking about the Gosnell horror story. This was it. This vid is hilarious.

If I need a new one, can I still get W7?
Or should I get a lap/desktop that has a touch interface and use W8?

You can still get Win7, so the more important decision is how you use your machine.
Desktop touch machines are pretty pointless. If you just need a work-station, then W7 is prolly best.
If your machine is a 2nd computer used for surfing or email laptop or tablet w/ touch is becoming common.

The Vista box does this weird thing though. Sometimes, on start up, it will shut down and restart 3 times, on the 3rd try it beeps and...nothing, no logo, just blankness. My solution is to use the nb for a few days and then try again which usually does the trick. Still, WTF man?

I can't believe no one here mentioned the CNN headline from last Thursday "Al Qaeda - U.S. Gun Laws are Weak". I saw it on TV while eating lunch at work. The volume was muted and the captions were too far away for me to read, but I gather the CNN talking heads were thinking this was positive news.
Anti-2nd amendment folks have Al Qaeda in their corner, good to know.

Vista is easily 3x slower than 7 and probably more. 8 is faster than 7 by far, and not as freaky as you'd think - just go to the desktop and everything is fine. Ignore the start screen - and make your own start folder just like the old days. It is however, not as stable as 7 - I'm already having issues.
For instance, my 8 boot disk keeps thinking there's some USB device attached it doesn't recognize (there's not) and unlike every other OS turning it off in the hardware manager doesn't work. Stoopid. If I boot on my 7 disk, everything is cool - no scary USB device.
I'm going to do a new build soon and am thinking of getting another copy of 7 just because I don't think 8 is quite ready for prime time. 7 was so stable in fact I've had this quad-core PC longer than any other PC or Mac I've ever owned.
What finally screwed up my system 7 OS was an M$ update I didn't catch that corrupted the whole update thing. I could never roll back nor fix it even with the "update fixer" utility. Lesson learned - and have it ask to update giving you a chance to see just what it's going to do and when it does it.

I learned that one the hard way too.
Other lessons:
1. Never buy a Microsoft OS when it first comes out. Wait at least a year, maybe forever.
2. Never ever "try" one of MS's "free" trials of the Office suite. It'll do its cyber kudzu impression, essentially scrub your HD of most of the old version, and take an afternoon to undo the damage.

XP support officially ends in April 2014.
That said, that just means they won't update security fixes anymore and some other minor details.
I don't know what happens if you have to reactivate it if you change hardware. Will reactivation work? I don't know. But I don't care because I bought my machine from vendor with win xp pre installed, I don't have to worry about reactivation problems.
You might not have to either.
They're providing a half assed path to upgrade but you have to have winxp pro to get it.
If they were smart (smart? This IS Microsoft) they would allow a relicense for xp to buy additional years of support. If it was reasonably priced, I'd buy it. Or an upgrade path from winxp Home.
I'll still putt along with my xp until I can't do what I want to do anymore and I'll worry about that then.
Now I've also upgrade my XP to the max with every full blown sp1, sp2, sp3 so ymmv and I also get the upgrades constantly. (I don't use automatic upgrade though)
If you don't use IE7 or IE 8 then security wise you're probably be okay for quite a while as the dick hackers will move on to the newer os's cause that's where the holes are.
If it ain't broke then don't keep coming out with crap and claim you're fixing something.
Microsoft needs to change their business model.

So yeah, Vista really is that bad. We just got used to not being able to rely on some of its functions. There was no reason it had to be that way. They chose to handicap it as a giant F-U to their customer base.
And don't get me started on itunes or the iphone. Those things put me off Apple forever. They are much, much worse than anything Microsoft ever put out. You can pretty much guarantee that updates will wipe out your shit about 1/3rd of the time.

The W8 tile thing on any device that isn't screen real estate constrained is kinda ridiculous.

Yep. My desktop has two good sized screens that are some distance away from me and therefore out of reach. I'm looking forward to having to lean forward to touch them to do anything.
Posted by: Jay Guevara at April 13, 2013 11:04 AM (IDSI7)
First, pull the memory (and cards) out and reseat them. No video is usually a bad memory module that's mapped at the extreme low end of memory.
If that memory is bad, the BIOS/POST won't work and the vid card never gets initialized.
The beeps are BIOS's way of telling you shit when there's no video.
If the reseat doesn't work, then pull the first memory module (probably marked 0 or 1 on the mobo) and swap it with another.

I wonder if that update is what ruined my Windows 7 computer?
The updates ran automatically at work and it installed IE10 and even through we rolled it back to IE9 at the office it affected IE9 in unpredictable ways.
Dunno, but I had a similar problem with an IE update that automatically loaded. That's what put me off of automatic updates, in fact. Took a while to restore everything to the way it had been.

Unfortunately they do like to release updates that break things.
It seems a lot of SW publishers do that nowadays. A program works fine, but then they have to "improve" it, and now it is overly complicated, buggy, slow, and crash-prone.
For that reason, I always keep the old versions of all my software, in case the publisher screws the pooch with an update.

disable it and then monthly or if you hear something bad on the news go to the site where you can pick what updates you want installed.
choose custom installation, express is all the updates you just get to see what they are but can't keep them from being installed. Custom installation lets you see what they're going to do and eliminate any update you don't like from the list.
I always kept IE from being updated until a piece of software I bought required it's presence. that blew my ie6 installation so I went to firefox. Firefox has gone overboard with updates also but you can get older versions or just not update to the newest.
I'm only at ff8 now and it works fine.
I had to laugh, microsoft won't let you update the os using FF browser. What a gyp. do they really think i'm going to go ie just because?
If someone came out with a nice easy install of Linux, I'd try that again.

Sure, lots of hackintosh's out there. I never used Vista, went from XP to 7 and liked 7 but went to 8 because of the cheapo upgrade price ($39) and like it too, a lot of the apps are petty handy on a desktop/laptop and the "charms bar" is nice once you remember it's there, plus a good repository of drivers so a lot of stuff is just plug in and go. You should probably get their security updates. There's holes on stuff other than IE.
If you're very careful or not adventurous than you may get by without them. I would update asap because after next year you won't be able to.
You can also still get sp3 (service pack 3) which covers all the updates up to about '09 I think. If anyone knows if they've released a new service pack speak up.
The MS site may tell you that also.
Just don't let the updater load anything it wants, really look hard at what they want to install. Reject ie7/ie8. If you want them, you can get them separately.

We dual boot the laptops with Windows for school programs etc. which require Windows.
Our basic rule is Linux online , Windows offline unless absolutely necessary and only then after running all patches updates and virus sigs.
I know PA doesn't care for Linux due to lack of complete documentation and I agree. It's a problem but my kids and I actually have learned a lot about problem solving and programming so - bonus.

I have Win7 on this laptop, B'Gal's laptop still has XP. Hers is pretty slow, but it's old too.
What I don't like is all the websites that are for Win8 users. I stopped going to NASCAR.com because absolutely nothing worked for IE on it anymore. They just updated a couple of months ago before the new season started.
Anybody else who "upgrades" their site for Win8 will lose these eyeballs. I won't put up with a site I can't navigate.
Thank goodness there's nothing to navigate here.

They redesigned the sort selections and the summary thing.
Hated it.
I've noticed one thing about Computer tech/internet companies.
The better they are the more likely you'll find an easy way to contact them and/or send them feedback.
The harder or the more nonexistent sending feedback or comments to a company, the more likely they suck and will take you money and pull your pants down and run away laughing.
Amazon after YEARS still hasn't figured out that people might like to or know they have to jump to a certain point in the list of search pages to find what they're looking for. Do they give you that option. NOOOOOOOO.
Just try to suggest it to them and they'll answer with some polite gobbledy gook and you wind up with nothing. Not even a kiss.

When I transfer files to a DVD, I notice that the 'size' of the files is often different...from the size they are on the computer, to the size they are on the disk.
Why is that?
The file size is usually a few bits bigger after it's saved on the disk.

My main home PC came with Vista, and it was pretty terrible. Things wouldn't work. Some graphics programs I had to minimize then maximize to get them to display properly. UAC was incredibly intrusive and made a lot of stuff harder than it should have been. Windows 7 fixed all that--I've often thought of W7 as Vista with Service Pack 1.

Once that's done all you have to do is locate your ipconfig file and edit it for the changes you need.

Jeff Bezos is an infamous micro-manager. He micro-manages every single pixel of Amazon's retail site. He hired Larry Tesler, Apple's Chief Scientist and probably the very most famous and respected human-computer interaction expert in the entire world, and then ignored every g*ddamn thing Larry said for three years until Larry finally -- wisely -- left the company. Larry would do these big usability studies and demonstrate beyond any shred of doubt that nobody can understand that frigging website, but Bezos just couldn't let go of those pixels, all those millions of semantics-packed pixels on the landing page. They were like millions of his own precious children. So they're all still there, and Larry is not.

Don't look at the approximations the file mangler may give in an icon view, look at a specific file size numbers from a "details" view.
What Merovign is talking about is allocation granularity for particular media...
This is something I've wanted to do a nerd post about for a while now as normal people can get some performance gains by having a bit of understanding about it.
Ex. if you got 2 drives and use one as a dedicated swap device, tweaking the NTFS allocation size when formatting it can be a big win.

I don't hate it either, but I prefer XP. One of the things I have on my XP box at work is a buttload of CMD windows in various sizes to deal with various things I do. Can't do that easily in 7 because you can only have *one* link to a program in the Start menu.
Also much prefer XP Paint to Win 7 Paint. I do lots of little illustrations for my manuals in Paint. On Win 7, Paint will anti-alias text unless you disable anti-aliasing for *the whole bloody operating system*.

10.2 sucked big time. You just didn't hear about how bad until 10.3 came out.
Apple loves to decide that perfectly good hardware is obsolete. That's why they dumped support for their printer port in OS X. I could dig up more recent examples, like deciding that relatively new Power PCs would no longer be upgradable.
PC:
no support for pppoe connectiods prior to XP. Vista support for that is crappy too, although XP can handle it. We have WiMax type towers that need a connectoid if you don't have a router.
Vista has the worst wireless support. You have to delete the damn profile to change the stored wifi password. If you just change it, it doesn't take and you can't connect.
Win 8: No POP email in the mail app. More stuff buried even deeper in the OS. What the hell is that "charms" shit? Who decided that people didn't need menus any more. I spent 45 minutes Friday trying to talk a woman into configuring the mail app. She couldn't find where you set up a new account in it.
We run XP on our work computers. I really could use something that will run Win8 so I can truly learn the damn thing. But if I had it installed on a computer, I wouldn't use it. I have an old Thinkpad T25 that runs Crunch Bang Linux. Ubuntu got too bloated for it. As for iphones, I've never had a problem with an update and I'm on my second one. I always buy one generation behind on Apple products. The bugs have been worked out and you can usually get the cool accessories at a discount.

Its more like you put the marbles into bags that hold 1k, 2k, 4k marbles each, then chuck those fixed sized bags into the file system's box.
If you only need 2 marbles in a bag, it's still gonna take a big bag to hold them.

230...no, what was it about?
'DaVinci's Demons'...it's on STARZ.
It's about Leonardo DaVinci, as a young man, just starting out in Florence.
Don't want to give away too many spoilers, but it is portraying Leonardo as a young, hawt, horny guy.
Also...brilliant and defiant against the ruling class...ambidextrous, can sword-fight with a sword in each hand.
There is skin, cuss words and lots of steampunk type stuff that the Horde would probably like.

buy another damn drive.
Ps. the slow down at shutdown may be a program helper loaded for something you may not realize uses one.
I've found all kinds of helper programs that came with the front end program I loaded. These are updaters and keyloggers and net searchers. I think win media player uses one to retrieve titles from the internet. whether you happen to be using windows media player or not the helper file is loaded into memory and some of those helper files are also trackers and send info to various other places when they shut down.
that may be where the delay is. Try a safe mode startup and see how much stuff is loaded in memory. then shut down and see how much faster it is.
Only problem is that you can have a difficult time trying to keep those helpers from loading and if you succeed then when you want them you have to reboot.
It's why I hate Nazi programmers who don't want the user to have any choices about what happens and what gets loaded.

Vista sucks.. it just plain sucks. Win 7 is ok if you turn off UAC. BTW - you cannot fully turn off UAC in Win 8! Surprise!
I'm still using XP mostly at work for development, with virtual machines of various varieties for testing, etc.
My current home machine is Win 8, and with the "Classic Shell" add-on that gives you a start button and boots to the desktop, I just love it. Fast and stable.
BTW - "Classic Shell" can also be installed on Win 7 and you can get the look and feel of XP in explorer, etc. Nice.. and FREE!

If you're careful about what links you click into and use a decent browser your security risks fall further.
top it off with a no tracker addon and a cookie monitor (cost $o) you're almost all the way there.
Setup your router firewall properly and don't open attachments in unknown sender emails and that pretty much covers you.
Now that's with all the updates to security that have already happened. And granted there's been a lot. but you don't hear about too many these days do you.

I have a question and figure this is the perfect thread to get the answer.
I am about to listen to Brainwave Entrainment mp3s which I've used before and were very beneficial. These are actual mp3s on the computer and I'd like to transfer them to a CD so I can listen on a CD player.
The manual has a caveat "Interfering with the frequencies in the audio" - Playing around with the frequencies in the audio is going to impair your progress. The file must be listened to in the format given, and any conversions must ensure that the correct bitrate and sample frequencies are maintained.
Question: Burning the mp3 to a CD won't interfere with any of the frequencies in the audio, right? I'm not changing the file, I'm just burning it to a CD.
Thanks so much!

Hey Purp, I have a question for you: I almost got an AS in CompSci about 13 years ago. Majored in Visual Basic and minored in HTML. I understand that virtually everything I learned back then is obsolete today.
I might be able to qualify for some financial aid. If I were to go back to school for an Assoc degree, would VB still be a good choice in the market today?

Microsoft wants to force people into apps, so they can get their cut. They tried taking the ability to write desktop programs out of the free .NET development tools until the developer community pretty much threatened to walk. They made the Office 2013 license for one non-transferable PC, until they relented on that. 1.5 stars out of dozens of reviews on Amazon may have sunk into their heads that their customers were giving the "nudge" a hearty "screw you."
God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind. This also implies that there are people that are not of a sound mind. Some of these folks are programmers (and some are politicians)
When you use a piece of software, your mind has to track along the same lines as the person who wrote the software. When software really irritates the heck out of you, it probably is not your fault!
I have read hundreds of blog entries where people argue with a MS product manager over how obnoxious the choice of three color schemes are in Office 2013. 1) they only reluctantly care and 2) it is probably so things would look better on a tablet using SkyDrive --which they also want to shove in your face until you buy an Office 360 subscription.
So when people are pissing down my neck and telling me it is the glorious future, I have a problem with that, whether it is politics or software.

Currently, under the story that is now trending on the Washington Post, the libs are busy trying to bury any conservative comment that is anti-abortion. Surprising, huh?
Anyway, I spent an hour or two batting around libs and ran two off. I mocked them outrageously for using their cut and paste names as responses (examples: Westboro, American Taliban, etc). It is easy to spot these stupidos who hide in their Mama's basements and swarm, tag-team style, to conservative comments. It is almost like they work in shifts (from their names and my anthropology study for two afternoons). I mocked them, repeatedly, and they fled. I even invoked the great blog, Ace of Spades, when one kept calling conservatives "morons." I told him that was a badge of honor on this blog.
So, anyway, the point of this news bulletin is this: if you ever feel like batting around a libtard, go to WaPo, register with bogus information, and do what you do here best: mock. It is sort of cathartic.
Now, back to your regularly scheduled moron stuff. Love you.

The wall wart with my v1 Kindle Fire had a pretty flimsy wire leading to the mini-USB jack, but the $7 cable for syncing/charging fromn py PC's USB port was remarkable sturdy.
When I upgraded to a FireHD, it wasn't worth the effort to sell the v1, so I gave it to a small child whose parents curse me daily. (A constant flood of "Buy me this book or movie, mommy?")
The internal storage on the older models is minimal, but it's easy to keep your device groomed. Anything you bought from Amazon can be re-downloaded free forever and anything you sideloaded from your PC can be easily backed up to DVD-ROM.

Does anyone know if its a PITA to set up a 2nd hand kindle or no problem? My dad has expressed interest in getting a kindle, apparently the pawn shop has a stack of them. I'm a bit leery that it would be a time sink and the new ones from Amazon are pretty cheap too. But perhaps I'm being paranoid.
I think a basic kindle is under 80 bucks right now, brand new. I think I'd go that route first, and probably go with one of their new backlit 'paper white' models.
It's supposed to be fairly easy to unlink a used kindle from a specific user...but I've never tried it....though, if I were to buy one used, I'd read anything interesting on the device, before I attempted to reset it.

Also today, one of the last three survivors of The Great Escape died. Les Broderick was next to last out of the tunnel before the Germans found it. Unlike 50 of his comrades, he was returned to the POW camp. Those 50 were murdered by the SS at the orders of the Fuhrer.

The search in Vista worked just fine. It was configured by default to search the areas where users are supposed to store stuff. By limiting indexing to those areas it reduced overhead.
Changing the configuration to include more areas in the index, up to the entire volume, was a trivial control panel operation.

179The Gnome fanatics went ready to declare jihad over Ubuntu's dropping Gnome in favor of the Unity interface.
Gnome is a UI designed for some alien species, not humans. KDE is a cardboard pimpmobile. Both are shocking resource hogs.
The Gnome fanatics probably like Emacs too. The only editor that comes with thumb screws AND a comfy chair.
Which is the main reason why I never went to Linux. The UI just sucked when I was playing around with RedHat 9/10, so I pretty much gave up on it.
Windows is playing the Star Trek Movie game. Every other OS out of Redmond sucks. If you start with Windows 3.1/WFW3.11, and progress through to W8, the odd releases work, and the even releases suck.
3.1=good; 95=bad; etc. W2k was the only one that bucked that trend, but it was a transition from NT4/98 into a unified OS package that could function in standalone, peer-to-peer networks, or client-server networks. W2k ran great, but XP was so much better.
I still run XP on my laptops, and Server2k3 on most of my server farm. At work, we MUST use XP for one of our critical software packages, because it and W7 refuse to play nicely, even in "XP compatibility mode".

The things you describe here and elsewhere suggest you got a mangled Registry. I'd look into repairing that. You may find a lot of stuff that refuses to use the setting you select stop that behavior.
Mangling the Registry was a big problem with third party apps on XP. One of the primary reasons existing software stopped working on Vista was that Microsoft took what had previously be recommendations going back to Win2K and made them enforced laws within the OS. Intuit was a big offender there. They would use the Registry as a means to let their own third party developers link stuff into QuickBooks, like industry specific packages.
This was a big problem as the Registry was intended to be a location that gets written to rarely and read often. There were similar reasons for having Program Files and Program Data where XP only had Program Files. The idea is that if an app completely loses it while writing data it doesn't kill the whole install. In a properly designed app you should be able to completely erase the folder in Program Data and it will only cause the customs settings and such to be lost and the folder recreated by the app when it runs next.
This was a long existing structure in systems like Unix that always had to be designed with multi-user environments in mind, meaning the individual users could only write to an area set aside for them. Coming from the anything goes personal computer world, Windows lacked any way to create any genuine enforced limits on the user. NT had the infrastructure but it went largely unused for over a decade due to the worry over alienating users. The more time went by the harder it became to implement these longstanding CS practices without breaking a lot of stuff.
So, a lot of complaints about Vista were from things that should have been there from the beginning if you wanted to have a serious OS that protected itself from Stupid User Tricks. If something like OS X had existed in 1995 and had a sane company behind it, Windows would have faded away.
And Microsoft would have been good with it. They tried to get out of the OS business for many years. They thought OS/2 was going to be the OS that made the micro industry ready for prime time but it couldn't happen because IBM was at war with itself, with personnel doing things to undermine the OS/2 effort that would have gotten them fired at Microsoft.

Some people hated the animated characters but I've lost count of the number of times I've brought a repaired machine back to a user and stayed to make sure everything was working for them, to find the #1 complaint was that the dog or cat in Office was gone and they didn't remember how they got it in the first place.
This was usually with a machine that was handed to me in a completely inoperable state, so I couldn't be aware of what custom choices to restore.
The research was right but didn't factor for how reacted adversely among the power users who drove opinion. The users who liked the animated characters LOVED them. The real problem was implementation. The help system wasn't versatile enough to handle the range of personalities it would encounter, such as thus who bristle at the most subtle offering of a suggestion, never mind an in your face cartoon character.
This kind of issue is coming up again in Windows 8.

Almost fifteen years ago, I did some design work for an outfit that was attempting to produce a handheld computer something like a tablet, and it ran Windows CE. When the iPad first came out and I got the chance to play around with it, I finally understood why the tablets didn't catch on the first time - Windows CE.
With Windows 8, what exactly is Microsoft trying to achieve, some sort of hybrid desktop/tablet OS?
Posted by: Blacque Jacques Shellacque at April 13, 2013 03:22 PM (fdkkW)
Different file systems can have different requirements at the lower levels.
Say the lowest level sector is 1024 bytes. Each sector has a certain amount of those bytes set aside for various functions like labeling the sector and pointing to the next sector that comprises the file. So the same file on two different file systems (NTFS for the hard drive and probably UDF for the DVD) can report a different size for the exact same file. (Way back in the 80s, it was a touted feature of the Amiga's file system that each sector pointed to both the previous sector in the file and the next sector in the file. This made it a lot easier to recover data if a disk were damaged. But that also meant that there was a slightly greater portion of each sector given over to stuff besides the user data.)
Depending on how detailed the display of files is set, the difference may not be obvious for a small file. For a big file, like a good sized chunk of video, it's going to be more obvious. You can also run into a situation where the OS uses one format and an app uses another, making it hard to tell if they agree on the file size.

No, it's their attempt to have a unified approach that cover all of the market segments. Which sounds great in concept but has issues in execution. It is a core decision whether you're going to have multiple OSes with a shared base (Apple) or try to make a single system that is versatile enough to be usable in a variety of environments, which is what Microsoft sought.
A lot of this is driven by a company's motivators. Apple is nearly non-existent in the big business market, so it didn't matter to them if users had a completely different UI on a portable device than on their desktop computer. Meanwhile, business users are huge piece of Microsoft's market and a tablet with a Microsoft OS has to require little or no training for a cubicle drone to start using it as an alternative to their PC.
Microsoft had already been down the road of trying to make the desktop usable on handheld devices. Pen and touch input had been in Windows in increasing amounts since the 3.11 days, and WinCE attempted to bring a familiar Windows desktop to much smaller devices. None of it produced any serious numbers. The most successful WinCE devices were such that you might never know it was running WinCE if you didn't catch the copyright notices at the right moment. (A lot of GPS devices are still WinCE, for example.)
I don't have a problem with Windows 8. It's running on bother my newer desktop and laptop. But that doesn't mean I cannot think of a lot of ways to improve on it. These have been widely discussed and hopefully some of them will come up in the Blue release.
To me it's sadly funny that so many people have freaked out over the change from the Start menu to the Start screen. I have Win7 and Win8 desktops on a KVM switch and have no difficulty moving between them. I find it far more jarring when I have to switch between Windows and Mac, mainly because I've never liked the 'One menu bar to rule them all' approach of the Finder. But it doesn't stop me in my tracks as some claim with Win8. What is really sad is I can remember how people reacted to the Start menu when it first appeared in Windows 95. Some people hated it with an intense passion and continued to use the old Program Manager and even altered their systems to run it automatically. (Just type PROGMAN at the Run command.)
Not because it was better. It wasn't by any sane measure. But it was what they knew and they couldn't bear to change. I cannot imagine living like that. I don't embrace change for change's sake but I don't shy away from it either.

It didn't matter what the OS was back then. The hardware was nowhere near good enough to produce a device that would appeal to the mainstream. THere were a lot of externalities that had to come together as well to make such devices attractive to a large audience, such as widespread fast wireless data connections.
If you had iOS on what could be offered for hardware in 1998, it would have still been a massive failure, just with compliments for having the right idea on the OS side. This is essentially what happened with the Apple Newton.

7 has this wonderful thing where it starts up pretty fast. With Vista I could turn it on, go downstairs and turn the coffee on, go and shower, shave, get dressed, get coffee....
And Vista still was not done starting up.
There are some things that the software boys really need to learn. Such as the consumer really wants the obvious stuff (starts up, doesn't collapse, etc.) and can go hang all of the nice little things that are far under-surface to most residential use.
Understand...a lot of people use this to send funny pictures of cats. Now, work from there.

You mentioned you are going to do some Windows Phone development. Got news for ya sport, if you want to develop for WP8 - You HAVE to run Win8 to run the tools to developer unlock and deploy apps to the phone. Vista or Win7 is fine for developing WP7 apps. They run fine on WP8 but again, how ya gonna get 'em on the phone?
Just bite the bullet and go out and spend a couple of bills on a nice 256mb SSD and make it the Win8 drive. Boot up in Win8 when you have too.
Me, I personally like Win8 but hate how it's so halfway there. Either kill the desktop of go all the way Metro. Yet another fucking genius committee decision that one was. As a developer, it's fun to write for and sure makes it easy to make shit pretty and integrated. Make no mistake - this is the path Windows is on - get used to it now and learn it.

I'm sure you've moved on Monster, but just in case. The down (undercoat not guard hairs) of even a domestic short-hair is generally spinnable, with care. Naturally the hair of longer cats is easier to spin.

Here is a caveat on used kindles when it is registered to an account for streaming music or movies a reset doesn't always clear that and you will get an error message if you try to stream. You can call Amazon and they can manually clear it in the database, but they will deny that. Tell them they are full of shit I know they can because I used to have access to the database. They will give in if you are persistent.
