Agents of SHIELD/Iron Man 3 Open Thread
— Ace

So yeah just letting you know that I am counting down the minutes until I am disappointed by Agents of SHIELD, even though I technically don't really care.

Meh. After that I'll watch the stupid Iron Man 3, which I also think will disappoint me Because Terrorists Are Always Working For American Corporations You Guys.

I'll let you know.

Open Thread.

All I've got is this, from @comradearthur -- Popular Science is shutting down its comments because they tend to destroy "scientific doctrine."

Yeah it's about Global Warming. Assist to Evolution.

If you carry out those results to their logical end--commenters shape public opinion; public opinion shapes public policy; public policy shapes how and whether and what research gets funded--you start to see why we feel compelled to hit the "off" switch.

A politically motivated, decades-long war on expertise has eroded the popular consensus on a wide variety of scientifically validated topics. Everything, from evolution to the origins of climate change, is mistakenly up for grabs again. Scientific certainty is just another thing for two people to "debate" on television. And because comments sections tend to be a grotesque reflection of the media culture surrounding them, the cynical work of undermining bedrock scientific doctrine is now being done beneath our own stories, within a website devoted to championing science.

Oh and Andy, @theh2, says the following is worth a watch.

Mike Rowe gave some kind of much-discussed TED talk. (I never heard of it.) I guess he said some funny things. Maybe not intentionally funny. He now explains this.

The Talk:

And The Explanation. Apparently wine was involved.

[Update - Andy] Stick with that explanation podcast to the end. You won't be disappointed.

22 I thought the "evil corporate enemy" nature of Iron Man 3 was pretty heavily blunted, what with Tony Stark and Pepper Potts running the bigger of the two giant corporations. And frankly they pretty much posed the other as a secret crime organization rather than a corporation per se. The first movie, which was better overall, did this worse than the third. I think the worst part of 3 was selling the iron man suits really, *really* cheap at the end, presumably because they're going to go the whole "Extremis makes him really iron man without the suit" route, which I think will make Iron Man 4 worse than all 3 so far.

I never have listened to the whole of Rowe's talk, but I did listen to the excerpt concerning castrating sheep, and I wouldn't call it "funny." For those of you who haven't heard it, Rowe relates that prior to doing a show that had him castrating lambs, he called up a couple of experts, including the Humane Society and an agricultural college, and asked what was the most humane way of doing the job. All his experts replied that the most humane way was to use a rubber band thingy that cuts off the circulation to the testicals, leading to the testicals dropping off after a couple days. (Most livestock manuals will say the same thing, BTW.) He then went to the ranch, where the shepherds cheerfully showed him how they do the job: by slicing open the scrotum with a pocketknife, pulling out the testicals (using their teeth because "slippery"and "hands full of kicking lamb"), and cutting the cords. He was appalled, and told them what the experts said, so they pulled out a rubberband thingy and gave him a demonstration.

The result was that the lamb castrated the "humane" way was in great pain and went and lay down in the corner for over an hour, while the lamb castrated by the barbarian method was out  frolicking in the clover  five minutes afterwards. That, the shepherds, explained, was why they continued to use the cutting method. Then they started the film again, and Rowe learned to do it the barbarian method while being filmed.

The moral of the story, as Rowe saw it, was that sometime unanimous expert opinion is wrong and sometimes the people who do this kind of thing for a living know stuff that the experts don't.

58 Any car folk around?   My little econo-box model Saturn with 150K miles failed its emissions test.  Too much NOX, 1.75 when the std was 1.5.   They noted a mis-fire or something like that on one cylinder and that it races the rpms in neutral as possible reasons why.   I solve the racing by pushing down a bit on the clutch when I'm idling at a light so have not been inclined to worry about it except now I have to get this fixed or GAACK shop for a different little commuter car.     I'm kind of worried about that cylinder notation but that might be 'needs spark plugs' easy peasy to fix.  I'll call my mechanic but thought I'd try the knowledge base here as well.

It takes a die-off for legit out-club theories to make headway. The ideal of an objective scientist is largely unrealized. That's not to say there are not illegitimate out-club theories. They called the terror group in the first movie The Ten Rings which was an obvious reference to The Mandarin, and then everyone expected that to be it, but it was just a head-fake. Now, if it had been a GREAT movie, most people would be all "meh" about the details. But if a movie is mediocre people will pick like crazy at the details because the movie lost them at some point.

Frankly, Rowe makes some good points.

I dunno why people thought it was funny (his sheep story is slightly funny but only because of the way he tells it, he's a good story teller and you need some humor to get over the obvious discomfort.)

We have declared a "war on work" as he puts it.

Too top heavy in the "higher education" area.

I know I know, y'all gonna tell me "actual PhD student tsrblke saying this, that's just hypocrisy."

Maybe it is?  Or maybe not, I dunno.  Would I have been happier as a plumber or an electrician? I really can't know because I didn't go that way.  What I do know is, I'm not exactly the spitting image of happy right now*, so going the full academic route isn't all it's cracked up to be.

*I'm not sad either, but I'd seriously consider trading stability for what I ended up with, which is a bunch of knowledge with a take on it that the academic world doesn't seem too interested in.

107 Any car folk around?

Posted by: palerider at September 24, 2013 08:21 PM (dkExz)

My .02 worth. High NOX would seem to me to indicate a lean condition, causing cylinder temperatures to be too high. Check the engine carefully for vacuum leaks. That could cause your high idle problem, too.

Does applying the brakes change engine idle? A bad brake booster can cause a big vacuum leak.

There is that which seems to support theory and that which seems to refute it, through weight of statistical evidence. Nothing is certain, there's just what experiment seems to bear out, or not, as in the case of humans moving the stars around to change the weather. When you have what's called "scientific certitude," as folks have pointed out (I want to say, 'since Galileo'), that's not science, that's religion. Doctrinaire, to be clear. Years ago I saw a write up in Scientific American in which they solicited the opinion of 50 scientists on the topic of global warming. I quickly noted that all those with Scientific expertise unrelated to Physics or Meteorology (Stuff Like Zoology, Anthropology, Botany, Entomology, etc) were all advocating for Anthropological Global Warming, while all those who knew what the fuck they were talking about were either cautious or against it. All one needs to figure out Global warming is a crock is charts comparing the Spectral absorption characteristics of C02, Water Vapor, and CH4. You figure out right away that Water Vapor is the dominant effect, and if you understand what that means, you realize immediately that their argument is an utter crock.

130 Thanks for the car advice.   I'm going to end up taking it somewhere to have them read the diagnostics and then decide if the repair cost is worth it.  Alberta they/the printout did say that high temps or high pressures could cause the problem, but as I understood the high NOX means fuel is not being burned completely which seems backwards for too lean or for a vacuum leak issue.

Darn car has started nickel and diming me with needed repairs.  Wheel bearings in april,  then one of the front struts was loose and I was getting excessive tire wear and had to have that fixed and now this and my mechanic is good about looking up and doing all the recommended maintainence stuff, so it really should not need plugs since we didn't do them last time I had it in; but GAACK I do hate car shopping.

132 First, make sure the plug wires are all seated well (and contacts are clean), you might be able to do this without getting dirty.  Then replace the offending sensor and plugs, next.  You probably don't have a way to read the codes - so this is likely to have to be a trip to mechanic's.

Posted by: Diogenes'Lamp at September 24, 2013 04:53 PM (bb5+k)

145 Fuel not being burned completely would result in a high CO or HC reading. You get NOX when you have excess oxygen in the cylinder, and temps get high enough for the oxygen and nitrogen to combine.

Get a can of WD40, and with the engine idling, spray joints, fittings and hoses attached to the intake manifold. If the WD hits a vacuum leak, RPMS should change suddenly.

Somebody else mentioned the EGR valve. If it is stuck partially open, that could lean out the mixture, too.

Pull out the spark plugs and "read" them. Normal deposit color is tan or light brown. Black and sooty, or oily indicate a rich mixture, exceedingly white and clean could be a vacuum leak, or less often a coolant leak into the cylinder.

The moral of the story, as Rowe saw it, was that sometime unanimous expert opinion is wrong and sometimes the people who do this kind of thing for a living know stuff that the experts don't.

The moral I got from it was the feel-good "humane" method was developed for the sensitivities of the people of the humane society, and not for the lamb. Not Rowe's, but also valuable and widely applicable.

Bingo. Of course the people who call you a "denier" claim that you disagree with basic physics of CO2 being a "greenhouse gas"* when the disagreement is all about feedbacks. The warmists' theory of net positive feedbacks is nuts when you know we've been at 7,000ppm of CO2 at points in Earth's history but the temperature didn't spiral out of control like a nuclear chain reaction. The warming from CO2 alone in the models is small. The "catastrophic" warming comes from their modeling of feedbacks ... and then they tell you they don't really understand clouds or the ocean that well. What the actual fuck kind of "science" is this? * "Greenhouse gas" is itself an awful term, since greenhouses mainly work by interrupting convection.

182 Bingo. Posted by: Andy at September 24, 2013 09:00 PM (0ZQCB) Exactly right. If their theory were correct, we would be an 800 degree inferno like Venus. Obviously their theory is incorrect, and it didn't take long to figure out why. Water vapor above 32 degrees is a positive feedback effect. It helps warm the planet. Diffussion increases with heat. If the effect were consistent, the system would run away with itself, but it doesn't. Water flips from being a Positive Feedback effect and becomes a NEGATIVE feedback effect. It forms clouds. Clouds reflect sunlight before it reaches the ground, and thereby prevents heating below it. The more water vapor, the more clouds form, the more reflection occurs. It is a self regulating controlled feedback system, and it operates almost as if someone designed it.

I love when people assume gravity is all figured out. Posted by: Jean at September 24, 2013 09:03 PM (CMlD4) You have to get the parts in close enough proximity for that to occur. By the time you get them that close, you've already done the hard part. My best guess as to how the parts could orient themselves (assuming a workable and or steerable thruster or thrusters) is to use cameras in each part, with orientation marks on the matching part. Each camera provides feedback correction to the thruster(s). (Bear in mind, the bulk of the thrusting needs to be downward to support the weight of the part) Pretty much each part would have to have the processing power of several I-phones or better, and probably with multiple cameras in each part. It would also likely need some method for crude orientation with the cameras and alignment marks merely used for final orientation. It might require RF links from every part to a central processor which does most of the rough work of coordinating the parts to get sort of close. It can be done (assuming working electronic thrusters.) but damn, that's an awful lot of effort for a "gee whiz, isn't that kinda neat" sort of result.

No, naive is thinking that Dick Durbin needs to say or do a damn thing to get reelected, much less drop into this filibuster to argue (however tendentiously, and don't get me wrong, he's a liberal jackfuck) about Obamacare.

Furthermore, I've seen a ton of political commercials in my life and I can't remember many (or any) that spent time on Congressional floor speeches.

If the engine is basically sound, then the repair.  At your mileage, the "nickle dime" is to be expected. It IS a fine line between gaining useful life and money wasted, so you need to decide if repairs are justifiable.

255 A bunch of physicists have this great big ole disagreement on what, exactly, the unified field theory should look like and what the universe is composed of.

So they debate and argue and push their pet postulates. And not one bit of it truly affects what gubmint policies should be as a result. So the cost factor of their disagreements is modestly low (there is a modest cost, however, in terms of new equipment to test out the various possibilities).

The disagreements over global warming though bear enormous social costs, if the worst possible outcomes are adjudged likely. Some estimates require expending the entire global GDP to combat runaway warming. So in such a case, shouldn't the burden of proof be beyond unassailable? I mean shit, they are still questioning Einstein's theories, probing for any exceptions which they haven't found yet.

Of course there is no such proof, not even close. Yet for this, the science is settled and everybody should just shut up and hand over a few generations worth of earnings because THEY SAY SO. As a scientist, this pisses me off to no end.

264 Ace, Iron Man 3 is pretty fun, but you have to just turn your brain off and go with it. All sorts of stuff makes little sense. Elements of the story were taken from original comics, in particular the "Extremis" storyline (which rocked). However, this is a typical Hollywood deal where a bunch of ideas were lumped together and the result is not nearly as good as simply adapting the original "Extremis" comics would have been. The biggest flaw is a common one in action movies: the hero figures out where the bad guys are, and instead of picking up a phone and calling the authorities, the hero goes in single-handedly. In IM3, there is a scene where Tony Stark assaults a bad guy hideout all by himself and not even wearing the Iron Man suit. It's kind of fun, but totally ridiculous, given that he could have simply called someone and had a whole SWAT team take the place down. Then the ending is a typical Character Development™ thing. I'll bet high school English teachers will love it, but I didn't. But Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man is always just so fun to watch, Gwyneth Paltrow is suitable eye candy in yoga clothes at the end, and the effects are of course the best money can buy. So just turn your brain off, go with it, and enjoy.

The kind you mention above is science fiction that I don't care for. I have a friend who's been saying for two decades that "People are so desperate for Science Fiction that they'll accept BAD Science fiction. " I would say much of what shows up on the sysfy channel falls into that category. Iron man crosses the boundary of what is plausible (given miniaturized nuclear reactors and electric thrusters) but they do such a good job making it entertaining that it doesn't bother me so much. Regardless of how Dipshit Durbin gets his insurance, we pay 72% of it. Conversely if you leave your employer funded coverage for the exchanges (willing or not), you get to pay for it all. You might qualify for a tax break but the requirements for those are really rough. Pretty much if you can afford a decent plan (the silver, gold or platinum plans) you don't qualify for a break. If you opt for the lowest tier and can prove it is because it is all you can afford, you MAY get a tax break. Of course your co-pay and out of pocket will make it major medical.

Most arguments I deal with are "Such and such Authority says this, or such and such authority says that." Of all the authorities they point to, they virtually NEVER point to a founder or Delegate. They point to lawyers, judges and writers from Decades after the fact, or court cases a hundred years later. They never argue from first principles, always they argue credentialism of "authorities". Glenn Reynolds is also constantly condemning Credentialism. It has apparently become acceptable as proof of stuff nowadays. More's the pity.

De Blasio might win this one. But Lhosa will gain the Goldwater prize, and win in the long run.

Independence was no more legal under George III than under Buchanan. As Lincoln said, secession is a moral right, not a legal one. It depends upon motivating cause for its validity. As far as a mass large scale movement, we are not yet at the point to have a clearly just cause. On current trajectories left unchanged, we one day will be. The only question thus is will the trajectory change?

But he explained that the administration sees the "Horse Act of 1884" as providing ample authority for the U.S. Internal Revenue Service to regulate the tens of thousands of preparers who fill out millions of Americans' federal tax returns.

A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit heard the administration's argument. Rothenberg said the IRS should be allowed to force tax return preparers - who are now unregulated - to pass a competency test and take annual continuing education classes.

But the Institute for Justice, a libertarian advocacy law firm, disagreed.

"Congress never gave the IRS authority to regulate tax preparers," said Dan Alban, an attorney for the institute.

504 485 It wasn't the tax. It was the control. The colonists knew their countrymen. They knew what to expect in the future. The colonists had no influence in Parliament, didn't seem as if they were going to get any, and once that body decided it was going to micro-manage colonial affairs vice the days of "salutary neglect", and given the corruption still prevalent in England at the time (I do not know if better or worse than in Pepys' day), the colonists could expect much what we expect today. To be ruled at the whim of others for the benefit of others. Any others the rulers chose.

513 I just told a friend today that the "spirit of rebellion" should be sweeping the land, but it isn't. At least not to the level that it should.

The thing is, that when George III's Parliament was demanding whatever-percent of American revenue, Americans at the time didn't have the revenue in liquid form. Americans were planting their seed corn and not, generally, living like lords.

(Along the coast of Virginia and the Carolinas, sure, they were trying to live like lords. But that wasn't the majority.)

A 5% tax-rate, and London's insistence that it had the right to define the tax-rate, actually meant something back then.

Now, 50%? We all still got our PS3's and our internet and our cable TV.

542 526 You have to combine that with corruption to get anywhere. It's not just that government is in everything. People will unfortuately accept that sometimes. It's that it also doesn't follow it's own rules, and plays favorites. That it does not have the rectitude and virtue it demands of you.

False- Little Media Lies About ObamaCare (IBD) - http://bit.ly/1fk8LN1

"Bias: Heard the one about how House Republicans have passed 40-plus bills to repeal or defund ObamaCare, all of which went nowhere? It's not true. Yet the mainstream press continues to peddle this blatant falsehood."

"Obama signed House bills to kill a costly ObamaCare reporting rule, terminate its long-term care insurance program and repeal the 'free choice voucher' program. He also signed bills cutting funds for the so-called CO-OP program, a public health slush fund and other ObamaCare programs.

Two other House-passed bills — one to end the Independent Payment Advisory Board and another terminating the medical device tax — have strong bipartisan support. Another simply codified the employer mandate delay Obama himself had already ordered."

578 Somebody tell me: I've been beaten about the head and shoulders today on FB regarding the Tea Party. To my mind it is an amorphous group that is loosely defined. Unlike Rs and Ds there really aren't set parameters. There could be folks from R, and Libertarian (less likely but possible D) parties who fit under the umbrella. The only truly universal trait is a belief in smaller gov't. SSM, immigration, etc may have varying degrees of acceptance. Apparently there's a wikipedia page that lays out complete parameters. And RAYCISS is about the nicest part. Did I miss an actual formation with rules and regs, mission statement and purpose?

You probably missed the libs/dems/lefties wanting desperately for the tea party to be a describable entity and when it wasn't so, with the help of their media friends and the i r s, they are desperately trying to make it so.  Last I heard it was people for fiscal responsibility, the Constitution, following current law as regards immigration and way way way smaller, less intrusive government with an emphasis on state's rights.  There are plenty of libs, dems, blacks, Hispanics, women and gays among the tea party, the dems don't want you to know or see that.

REVIEW: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

A good review, like any piece of journalism, derives its value from its objectivity. A good review should not be the ravings of a fan; it should take a sober, impartial approach to the material being reviewed, and strive to strike a balance between even-handedness and aggressive critique.

In that spirit, then, I cannot in good conscience call this piece a "review," much less a "critique."

Joss Whedon has long since had my devout attention as a fan; he first grabbed me with "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," and he cemented my devotion with "Firefly."  And while I would like to think my enthusiasm for everything he has done since then ("Dollhouse," The Avengers, "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog") is well-founded in a developed, semi-critical aesthetic, the truth is that he never fails to please me. I am nearly guaranteed to adore anything and everything his creative vision touches.

Enter "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," Whedon's small-screen follow-up to the superhero-fest The Avengers. Set in the same universe, and featuring a couple of the same characters, the new series occupies a much smaller footprint. Yet somehow, impressively, it succeeds in magically magnifying the grandeur and awe of its big-screen predecessor.

One of the problems with superhero movies is a problem of scale. Superheroes are by definition larger-than-life characters; they inhabit a realm of ability and consequence that none of us can truly imagine, much less empathize with. When Iron Man stops an alien invasion of the Earth, he saves countless millions (or billions) of lives. When Thor defeats the rampages of his evil half-brother Loki, he saves millions more.  In his off time, Tony Stark collaborates with Bruce Banner on unimaginable technology that would forever advance the realms of particle physics and bioengineering.

Whereas today, I got a half-decent start on an Android phone app and carried a few boxes up some stairs. And that left me wiped.

The gulf between these two realms is vast, and the danger with any superhero movie is getting so caught up in the grandeur of the macro world of gods and monsters and billionaire-playboy-philanthropists that the scale of their adventures gets lost. When a small town in New Mexico gets destroyed in 2011's Thor, it's a fun spectacle, but does anyone think of the coffee shop owner whose entire life savings just got wiped out in one fell Asgardian swoop? When the Hulk runs rampage on a college campus in 2008's The Incredible Hulk, do we really stop to consider the poor group of sophomores injured or killed by falling rubble?

I don't. Or I didn't. Now, having seen the first episode of "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.", I am hoping that will change. Unlike the Marvel Studios films that preceded it, this series promises to involve us deeply in the lives of ordinary people—and in the lives of those not-quite ordinary (but nowhere near godlike) government agents who help us see the consequences of a world in which giants walk the Earth.

Foremost among our guides in this tour is Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), the agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. introduced in the first Iron Man film (it should come as no surprise to anyone who has seen previews of the series that reports of the character's death in The Avengers were, as Twain might have said, slightly exaggerated). Coulson is, as ever, smart, capable, cool under fire—but most importantly, uncommonly decent. "Don't ever tell me there's no way!" he thunders at one point, when told that saving an endangered civilian is impossible. "We need to come up with a third option, one that doesn't involve Mike's son losing a father."

Best of all, Coulson is unflaggingly, disarmingly funny. Humor intermixed with high drama and tragedy is one of the signature moves in any Joss Whedon drama, and "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." is no exception.

The rest of the ensemble—the reliable Ming Na Wen as Agent May, along with newcomers Brett Dalton and Chloe Bennet—round out the team with a fantastic combination of strength, enthusiasm, and promises of future mysteries.  As ever, Joss Whedon also gives time to a few favorite ensemble actors (Ron Glass from "Firefly," J. August Richards from "Angel", and Cobie Smulders from The Avengers), as well as a generous smattering of tantalizing, mysterious hints of things to come ("He doesn't know, does he?").

What makes all of this work, however, is what will undoubtedly set this new series apart: its focus on the ordinary. In the pilot episode, we meet Mike, an average guy, down on his luck, who has been given super-powers. He's been offered a taste of greatness normally denied the rest of us but displayed so flamboyantly by the heroes we now know inhabit the earth. Mike's frustration with his own limitations rings very true, even intimately familiar. It's human nature to strive for more, and to grow angry when we see others moving far past limits that we ourselves can never transcend.

"You said it was enough to be a man," Mike says, "but there's better than Man. There's gods. And the rest of us, what are we?  They're giants. We're what they step on."

And this is the perspective that makes "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." soar. Suddenly, we are no longer just flying high above New York City with Iron Man and Thor; we are also down on the ground, amid all the other potential casualties. We stand among the ants looking up at our heroes with a mixture of awe, admiration, and frank envy.

Not many writers could successfully bridge this gap. As he has proven time and again, though, Joss Whedon not only has the imagination to successfully inhabit both worlds, he has the rare skill of being able to move back and forth between them. Doing so, he expands our perception, helping us to grasp the scale of a world that holds both the unimaginably huge and the all-too-imaginably humble.

I can't wait to see where he takes us next. Fortunately, I only need to wait a week.
