1 Not sure an orchestra is really able to be a "flash" or a "mob," but still very lovely.

Posted by: @ParisParamus at December 06, 2013 08:13 PM (Gcm3A)

2 A few people in the comments a few days ago when I saw this elsewhere were going off on "ERMAGERD CHRISTIAN MUSIC, VIOLATION OF SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE!!!!ELEVNETYONE!!!!!!"

Totally ignoring that the vast majority of full orchestra/band pieces have religious origins or allusions.  Yeah, I know this stuff was specifically Christian, and because Christmas soon; but even stuff like a lot of Wagner is  allusions and direct operatic retelling of old Norse pagan stuff.

3 Love the look on the faces.  Yep, folks still view the season as "Christmas".

4 Regardless, if I'd gone shopping in that mall with thoughts of gifts to be given, I'd have appreciated the performance by the Air Force band.

8 Just beautiful. God bestows many gifts of which, of course, love, forgiveness, and salvation are at the top of the list. But, somewhere not far behind, is music. It just makes your soul soar.

11 Seventh grade daughter is a talented French hornist. We are gently trying to nudge her toward high school marching band glory, followed by the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band, followed by a career in one of the military bands. Just showed this to her and she pronounced it "pretty awesome," which is high praise indeed from a twelve year old.

Posted by: Republic of Texas 2: Electric Boogaloo at December 06, 2013 08:30 PM (Gk2GE)

12 Fighting for their existence. Most AF bands have been downgraded (v.big deal for ratings and pay) even before sequester. Military music programs are the largest arts subsidy in the world. And they are not long for it, I'm afraid.

Sure the cadets hate marching anyway, hear the damn band every damn day before damn lunch, but when the chips are down and the boys are up against it, Sousa is still our secret weapon. I was watching the day the Soviets surrendered to Vladimir Horowitz. He played the piccolo trill with the ring and little fingers, and they said that's enough, we give.

Posted by: Stringer Davis at December 06, 2013 08:31 PM (xq1UY)

13 It just makes your soul soar. Surely it does. I feel sad for those who don't want to appreciate this time of year.

15 I agree that Christmas music is the best, and I'm Jewish.  Just a lovely, lovely time of year.  Love the pine trees now on the streets herein NYC, I pray for snow--and that does require prayers in these parts...

16 I now sing only during Christmas and Eater season at the church attached to Little's school (the director calls me his ringer). We are sadly not doing this piece this year. I love Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring done on our massive pipe organ with a brass section and timpani. We will do Joy To The World, though.

Posted by: Intrepid at December 06, 2013 08:40 PM (PsCCl)

19 Hanukkah is a relatively minor celebration that our world has conflated with a big to-do so it's easier for Christians to understand : big end-of-year holiday! Just like us! Purim is a dress-in-costumes-and-drink-til-you-can't-see holiday.

28 I hate the AF band.  Those fuckers get promoted to E-6 the day they leave basic.  No shit.  I missed E-6 by 0.04 points.  Twice.  4 deployments, 13 years (it was the clinton era, promotions for enlisted were ass)  Wasn't smart enough to get promoted so I had to get out and get a BS in physics and a masters in space operations.

Oh, yeah, I'm still pissed.

37 Over the years I've learned not much.

1)  don't push red buttons
2)  music, well played, is entrancing; and no matter where your soul is at a specific point in time, a beautifully played piece soothes and brings hope.
3) if you find yourself in the Hall in the pentagon, alone, you'll never forget it.

again, well done AF band.

42 Story Time!

Our base had just won some random award, so they picked a bunch of us NCOs to travel to the pentagon to accept it.  I was classic Texas boy/drill instructor, all full of myself, ripped, doing like a billion push ups a day; invincible etc etc. I had just been awarded my master military training instructor blue rope, so I'm thinking I'm the shit.

We do the tour, visit the chiefs of staff, and then we wander into the Hall.

Randy and Gary had just been awarded the medal like a week prior, so their citations were up on the wall.

So there I was.  Space shuttle door gunner.

And suddenly I'm alone in there.  The tour had moved on.  I'm reading names.  For the first time in my life I felt very, very small.  I wept.  I left my shiny new campaign hat with the shiny new blue rope on the floor in that room.  Some guy asked me where my cover was later and I told him I left it in The Hall.  He nodded.

You might not care but as I type this, there's still tears.  A humbling place, that little room.

Never bypass safety switches/guards you don't understand. In the class before mine in Powdered Metallurgy (which mostly consists of compressing the crap out of powdered metals). A set of twins thought that one of them could use their fingers to break loose a stuck die clamp ring. This was ona 20 ton press and they worked as a team to bypass the safety's. Needless to say you can now tell the twins apart if they aren't wearing mittens.

58 50.   They are all small, for what they did  -- the Mercury capsule, Spirit of St. Louis, Apollo.

But only the vessels were small, the men who rode them were giants.  Big courage and even bigger dreams.

Now, we're no longer a nation that dares great things.  We're  a nation preoccupied with going to the doctor.

I despise liberalism, the killer of dreams.

59 weddings and funerals.  That's where all the crazy shit goes down.

After about funeral 80, I was pulling the team into the armory to grab the M-14s and and the SF guy in the cage said "SSgt, do you DO anything other than bury people?"

So being the good NCO I am, I called his boss and had him come along with us.  It was a small detail, just firing team and me.  And of course Buck Sgt security forces guy.

I told him he's presenting the flag.  I can't describe the fear in his eyes when I ordered him to do that.  But, he did a very good job of presenting the flag to the 74 year old wife of a WWII vet he sat quietly in the van all the way home.

Comment about the cover was due to a former employee here.

There is a button in the control room, next to all the other alarm pull stations (Fire, Weather, Chemical). This button has a glass cover and a small hammer mounted to a chain. Anybody with common sense realizes immediately that the little hammer is to break the glass - not so obvious to the former employee.

They decide to unscrew the cover that holds the glass in place. When the pressure on the button is released, it trips the fire shunts on the main power breaker feeding the plant.

He stood there in mute shock as the plant went from running full out to immediate stop.

And good news, at least one part of the military can still plan and execute an operation.

Let us pray that all those who's first reaction to such music is an attempt to ban it, that their hears change.  They are no better than the religious of Massachusetts Colony who chased so many 'heretics' to Rhode Island or did worse things.

79 One of communism's goals is to destroy beauty, and our Air Force fought back in the best possible way, with breathtaking God-honoring beauty! I also love that this was done so close to the Capital steps. Whenever I go to a funeral and a military honor comes out, I get blubbery as hell

84 God bestows many gifts of which, of course, love, forgiveness, and salvation are at the top of the list. But, somewhere not far behind, is music.

It just makes your soul soar.

87 What a beautiful thing. And while we're talking about the waste of tax dollars, I could think of a few million other things to start on first, besides the military. Obamaphones. Exempting protected political classes from Obamacare. Amazing how suddenly supporters of the Free Shit Army get all concerned about budgets when it funds something they don't like.

89 That was just lovely - thank you so much for sharing. I went through a religious/spiritual crisis while getting my master of music degree. Performing music like this was one of the things that brought me back from that crisis. Music can truly touch your soul and connect you with God in a way that almost nothing else can.

90 Don't let Obama know about this- he'll probably try to kill it.

91 Greetings: I could sense panties knotting all the way back to Colorado Springs. Also, is it me, or has the band's dynamic range increased since the repeal of DADT ?

94 Not sure why I had tears in my eyes. I wish I had that kind of talent, but I'm only good at playing Battlefield.
