That explosion and oil leak was a result of criminal level incompetence and ignoring of safety requirements.  That being said, what followed was a spectacular level of what I thought at the time was government incompetence but when viewed in combination with "Fast and Furious" and the recent attempt to go to war in Syria based on the use of nerve gas that nobody has so far been able to trace to the Assad regime, looks like government malfeasance.

The federal government did nothing to stop the flow of oil reaching the wetlands along the Gulf Coast and they frequently reached out to stop, hinder or delay anybody who tried. 

There were the skimmers from Holland that could take in oil contaminated water and remove 99% of the oil.  First the Obama administration would not let them operate because the crews were foreigners and that would violate labor laws.  Finally when US crews were trained up, they would not let them operate as designed because sucking in oil contaminated water, removing 99% of the oil and returning the cleaned water was a violation of EPA regulations because that would be pumping out contaminated water into the Gulf, despite the fact that it was much cleaner than it had been.  This meant that the boats had to fill up their tanks with a combination of water and oil and spend most of their time sailing back and forth between shore and the spill site.

When the Governor of Louisiana put together a fleet of barges with large tanks to hold the oil and water with pumps, the Coast Guard demanded that they all return to shore for a week of inspections to make sure that they complied with various regulations.

When towns and counties spent their own money to buy booms to protect their beaches and wetlands from oil, the federal government confiscated the floating booms and moved them elsewhere to places where the oil never threatened the shore.  When attempts were made to build temporary sand dikes to prevent the oil from contaminating wetlands, the EPA stopped construction because those wetlands ordinarily depend on being flushed by the salt water from the Gulf.  Of course, once the oil reached the wetlands, it pretty much did not matter whether the ecosystem was flushed or not because most of the plants and animals were dead.

And that contamination of the coastal wetlands was the goal of the whole Obama performance.  Once the oil reached the shore, Obama ended new drilling and exploration in the Gulf of Mexico at the cost of 100,000 jobs and gasoline prices that are now twice what they were when he took office.  The rigs are gone to Brazil and Africa, the jobs are gone.  People have moved on to do other things now instead of providing you with affordable fuel.

The Boston bombing was a first-of-its-kind event, a one-off in terms of official response and public reaction. Also notice that one of the bombers is dead, the other in prison, and that those two fucked-up, would-be jihadis are no longer capable of bombing anyone. There was a fire in a nearby building and the fire spread, assisted by 30 mph winds.  It eventually involved a couple of large storage tanks and then boom.

Which gets me to thinking that rather than spending time trying to make plastic guns with a 3D printer, it might be more useful to come up with a way to make primers at home.  It seems that it ought to be relatively straight forward to form the metal primer body from aluminum soda cans.  If you have Berdan brass, you fill your new primer cup with a sensitive material and press it into place.  For Boxer primers, it is going to be a bit trickier to fabricate the tiny anvil that fits in the primer.

Actually, you can recharge used primers. Not difficult. You used to be able to do it with strike anywhere matches, but they changed the composition so they won't work for that anymore. Now, you can break a thermometer and make your own fulminate of mercury. That route has some hazards though. The stuff is seriously unstable in the ladder stages of formulation.

All cars manufactured after a certain model year (2015? 2016? somewhere around there) will have black boxes. Also, the idea of making everybody pay for highways by using a GPS to monitor your mileage is floating around. But the government wouldn't use those things to monitor your movements, right?

If CNN can find these f#ckers and interview them, then so can our intelligence agencies. Inform the governments of the countries that they live in they need to turn them over. During the Blitz in WWII, bombing raids on London crippled large parts of the city, but only briefly. Rubble was cleared away, the wounded and the dead treated or buried, and life went on. Cities in Germany and Japan, under sustained bombardment from 1943 onward, kept the trains running, the factories humming, and the people working right up to the very end.

We're in a war regardless of anything our utterly ridiculous President might say. There are going to be casualties, possibly lots of casualties, and I don't know that surrender, either theirs or ours, is in the cards. If we shut down our cities every time the enemy blows up a bus station or a basketball game, then we are effectively giving them what they so badly want. We would be doing it to ourselves.

So what's the answer? For one thing, we could keep killing their leaders wherever we find them. For another, we could start toppling those countries bankrolling those assholes--not with the purpose of rebuilding them or giving them a democratic government or any of that higher purpose crap we now know doesn't work, but with the purpose of toppling their governments. Let them sort it out.

If Al Qaeda has the capability to take things to a new, nation-wide level (a questionable assumption), then what would happen is what always happen in wartime when a country is under constant, direct attack: disaster response would ramped up proportionately. It would have to be. Cleanup would become more efficient by necessity (and unfortunately by constant practice).

What I'm saying is that the way we would respond would become a matter of routine, however terrible that routine would be. If trucks were blown up on highway chokepoints on a regular basis, then response systems would be put in place to deal with them immediately. The novelty of such attacks would wear off soon enough and we'd go about the business of dealing with them as efficiently as we could. Or we could just give up and allow the country to be paralyzed. Ask for terms--which I wouldn't put past our current President.
