I think he tried to stay away from talking about them...but the issues were still there, hanging in the air.

the South would probably be democrat if not for the social issues. outside of tax cuts and possibly the right to work, a lot of people in the south seem to generally agree with democrats on fiscal issues.

The Left has successfully established that unending deficit spending won't result in any bad consequences. The two issues share this in common.
If you can't beat them on the Social issues, you won't be able to beat them on the economic issues either. They will just swivel their guns from the social issues, (once those are defeated) and start training them on the fiscal issues.
Bottom line, if we can't beat them on the airwaves, we can't beat them at all. (At least politically.)

Unlike the abortion issue...the Debt issue is everpresent, and all around us.
It is in the higher gas prices, because our Dollar is worth less.
It is in the higher prices that we're paying...for everything.
It is also an issue that everyone has a stake in.
The abortion issue...not so much.
Our problem has been in Messaging.
We have to tie the Debt and Deficit Spending...to everyday life.
Such as:
"You like your High Grocery Prices? Thank the Debt!"

The people who give the election to Democrats do not care about this issue. They have a cognitive disconnect between their vote and these conditions. If anything, they blame bad conditions on those evil Republicans.
The media will swing the big guns from the social issues to the fiscal issues, and they will burn you down on those as well.
We have to take out the guns, not abandon the issues. No place is safe so long as they have those guns.

Does anyone actually believe "they" will allow us to "win" unless something changes? So how about we stop compromising our principles and encouraging others to do so or badmouthing those who won't?
If we can't even agree on what conservatism is at this point or we accept the other side's definition of who we are, we won't win even if the other side fails.
