The female judge tells one of her employees not to file a citation. The citation is for harassment and was filed by one of the judge's adult male children against his brother. Two months later the cop asked where the citation went. Judge says the system is backlogged. So she then enters the citation herself while saying the person is a black female and not a white male. When the employee got subpenaed, the judge tried to have the employee fired.
So the presiding judge I think has ample reasons to hammer this woman and be unmoved by her peas for leniency.

I mean, the point never seemed to actually do something constructive for this caucus, it was just to be able to go home to their gerrymandered district and say to any TeaTard primary challenger "I voted no, so there, you can't have my seat"
So now we get a worse Senate bill because 30 or so House members wanted a talking point.
Is that what the conservative movement has come to, an exercise in purity for a handful of House members?

Who Rules the Streets of New York?
Fox 5 NY: http://tiny.cc/djy14w
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - Who rules the streets? Some are beginning to wonder after a rash of incidents in the city organized by flash mobs.
You can find all types of vehicles making their way around Manhattan. Last weekend, more than a thousand skate boarders cruised city streets in the annual Broadway Bomb. Hundreds of bikers could be seen in the road rage video that went viral a few weeks ago...
My dears, I think we ALL know that the Newsies are king of New York.

Entertain yourselves with some tasty FBI hate crime stats. See if you can spot some regional trends...
You know what's rather silly about those, at least from a NH perspective? When I worked for NH DHHS we used to deal with crime statistics a lot, particularly in relation to crimes exacerbated by drug or alcohol charges. The problem was that most of the law enforcement agencies in the state all used different crime reporting data systems, and not all of those systems were compatible with the data requirements of the UCR. The larger cities had been using their own systems for long enough that overhauling them was a costly and difficult process. As of when I left DHHS in 2009, our two biggest cities -- Nashua and Manchester -- weren't even included in our Uniform Crime Reporting stats. It may have finally changed since then, but I'm not so sure.
I wonder how many other states have similar issues, and how much WORSE these stats would be if they were reported properly.

If the GOP doesn't keep the house, it means civil war. Not out of spite. Out of reaction to what will be done by the Dems as a result. Namely massive gun control.
Not saying that the GOP deserves to keep it, at all. I think it's important not to have any illusions about what that sort of loss would cause.

Sven, without the 2010 conservatives, there would never have been a revolt in the first place. It would have been handshakes in the half-dark, lobbyists with bundles, head-nods in the cloakroom, and an afternoon vote followed by an evening at the bar.

meh, in my field it was two liberals going after each other, so I'm not sure your analogy fits.
More accurately (at least in this case) it was a "you don't criticize the aristocracy."
Suing professor had a big company behind him that wanted to protect it's new pet.
Defendant professor had upset this noble and even though he had a prestigious university they didn't want to get involved.
While the right/left divide is important, let's not lose sight of the strange "you cannot insult me I'm your better!" vibe that's running under all this.

That narrative is a setup for Hillary, who they will crown their candidate and position as the "reasonable" choice. You know, amongst all this extremism.
They will conveniently ignore the part about how she was a primary participant in the Obama Administration, supported his decisions, ran our foreign policy into the ground, made the world a more dangerous place, has no real, tangible accomplishments, got an ambassador killed and then asked "what does it matter" and ultimately does not have temperament or skills to do the job.
But she's a woman and "it's time" or something.

Not that any of you need reminding, but two simple indices of political collapse (of the electorate, of the system as a whole) are on bright display these days: 1) the de facto exemption from the "health care" debacle given to the congressional types and federal workers 2) the idea/concept/terminology of a "budget commission" to work out budget matters.
Both of these illustrate, in different ways, that "it's dead, Jim" WRT our political system and the most important operational aspect of our former constitutional system.
Like so much else in the last few years, the de facto exemption of the nomenklatura via taxpayer subsidy was *politically unthinkable* in the America that existed until recently. The media and constituent rebellion/lynchings would have been instant, and decisive.
As pointed out in another thread this morning by Circa Insert Year Here, the Congress *IS* a "budget commission". That's 90% of its job - for the dim, even the committee structure and names provide a gigantic hint of this fact. I was astonished the first time, when the "Super Committee" nonsense was done. WTF is the congress but a committee mostly devoted to creating budgets?
Anyway, in a chaotic situation a shrewd intel analyst will look for key tell-tales and markers. Those two factoids highlighted above are just that. Inertia is the greatest force of nature and the fact that not everything around us appears like Zimbabwe is attributable - increasingly, almost in its entirety - to inertia. Not to an America where rule of law and an American mindset make it happen.

A common practice in Japan is to arrest a person for improper disposal of a corpse if they can't quickly get together the evidence to support a murder conviction. Promotion in many Japanese law enforcement agencies is often contingent upon how many cases you close and how quickly you close them, so if you want to rise up in the ranks it behooves you to close the easy case ("By stuffing that body in a bag and dumping it in the river you improperly disposed of a corpse") than the hard one ("You murdered that woman because she was having an affair with your best friend.").
There was one incident not too long ago of a British woman who'd gone to Japan to work as an English teacher who was murdered by a Japanese man whom she was tutoring. He managed to escape, barefoot, from his apartment with the cops swarming the place after they found her body stuffed in a bathtub full of sand on his back deck, which is just more proof of why I tend to call the Japanese cops the Keystone Cops of the East. While he was on the run the charge that accompanied his arrest warrant was improper disposal of a corpse, despite the fact it was pretty obvious that he had murdered this girl. They finally caught him years later, but only because her parents back in Britain kept hammering the Japanese law enforcement system to A) look for him, and B) arrest him, and C) charge him with fucking murder.
That's why I take Japan's squeaky clean criminal statistics with a very large spoonful of salt. That's not to say they're a hotbed of violent crime, but they're not a paragon of virtue either.

And no, obstructionist stunts are NOT all the GOP can do. They could, if they had the intelligence, character, and interest, force their opponents and the press to face facts and constitutional requirements, esp. on the budget process, which has been (in an unprecedented manner) lawless going on 5 years. They could browbeat and humiliate the press on sundry important points like what default is. They could, most importantly, confront the lawlessness of the administration and the Dems (presidential decrees amending laws?). They could - legitimately - milk the F**K out of the jaw-dropping offense to populist common sense represented by the de facto exemption of Hill critters and fed workers from the "health insurance" debacle.
Note that NONE of this has been even tried - going on 5 years now. And this whole ridiculous budget drama has yielded not one single GOP statement or action on a serious matter such as those listed above.
It's dead, Jim.

Well this is basically true so long as certain factions of the House are working at cross-purposes. There's no unity, and those of us who pay a lot of attention to the skullduggery aspect of things suspect that this is intentional on the part of a certain minority with the GOP, working in conjunction with certain outside lobbying groups. Will be to give the Senate MORE time to do the Job they already should have done? ie... pass the Budget and the Appropriations Bills, some of which sit on Harry Reid's Desk?
The end result of all this, will be so Harry Reid can continue to NOT ALLOW the SENATE to vote on appropriations bills?

Well this is basically true so long as certain factions of the House are working at cross-purposes. There's no unity, and those of us who pay a lot of attention to the skullduggery aspect of things suspect that this is intentional on the part of a certain minority with the GOP, working in conjunction with certain outside lobbying groups. That there's a power-play going on here behind the curtain.
Depends on what you value the most. I think the "certain minority" is pretty damn well set against further abuses of principle, and being taken for granted for go-along votes that enable further erosion of liberty.
But if you value working within the system that has repeatedly fucked us more than going around it to actually try to make a change, well, I can see why you'd say that.

Why? Explain to me what your disillusion stems from. I mean in a methodical sense. What goal did you want to see accomplished that wasn't?
If it was "defunding Obamacare" or somesuch, I would hope you'd have understood at this point that this was never, ever possible. Ever. Even many of the more august personages on this here moronblog who were pushing for a shutdown (like DrewM., or Ace, or EoJ, etc.) were willing to admit that this was impossible, it was just rhetoric. So the failure to "stop Obamacare" cannot be the source of your disillusion.
If it was the failure to get much of ANYTHING in this deal in return for having incurred the pain of shutting down the government, well then I agree. But as you said, the fault there is more because of disunity within the GOP caucus -- and particularly lobbying from outside groups -- than anything else. Have you been reading the news on this? Boehner had a stronger deal ready to go yesterday -- including the full Vitter amendment. It would have passed with the GOP, would have put Reid on the spot, would have most likely won. (Reid wasn't going to block that or Obama veto it.)
But then late in the day Heritage Action and FreedomWorks came out and said "we will score this vote against you and run primary ads against you if you vote for it, because YOU MUST DEFUND OBAMACARE." And the members that were on the fence wobbled and fell off again. Forcing us to simply take whatever the Senate came up with and pass it in the House with Democrat votes.
Whose fault is that? We ended up with a weaker deal than we could've gotten, but it isn't because of the "Establishment" or Boehner et al. It's because of the outside lobbying groups, whose stated purpose (i.e. "you must defund Obamacare!" we already know to be silly rhetoric). Therefore their real purpose had to be something else, and it's not hard to figure out what it is: flexing their muscles and disillusioning people in the base.
(As an aside there is a very popular conspiracy theory running around GOP circles right now -- ask Miss80sBaby about it! -- that the behavior of Heritage Action and FW in intentionally scotching yesterday's deal with the knowledge that it would force Boehner to settle for a weaker one was all about a pre-planned powerplay between factions within the House caucus who are trying to topple Boehner and replace him. Palace intrigue, in other words. Conspiracy theories are just that -- fire can't melt steel and whatnot -- so take it with heavy doses of salt. But I'll admit I've been turning it over in my head.)

not Vitter no sir but the Medical Device tax....
Actually, the deal that Boehner had worked out yesterday would have KEPT the medical device tax in place (bowing to the concerns of Tea Party conservatives in the caucus that it represented a concession to businesses whilst leaving the average joe still stuck in the shit) whilst IMPOSING the full Vitter amendment. So it would have given you exactly what you wanted on these two points.
Instead, the deal we're getting now, because Heritage and FW scotched that one, is going to be the exact opposite.
So, again: whose fault is this? Boehner would have been able to pass a better deal last night, and now we have to take a worse one. It's not the GOP Establishment that did this. Not everything is their fault, man.

Polynikes, this is literally one of the most incoherent things I've ever read from you. I received a lot of criticism from you and others for being too inflammatory and rude a couple of weeks ago. And you're criticizing me for this? That's literally inconceivable. I would submit that you're just looking for any reason to attack. JeffB your logic does not hold water. Boehner doesn't have to do anything, putting Reid bill on the floor is surrender - he should hand the gavel over to a page. Call DeMint, make a deal and pass a bill with some partial roll back of Obamacare and the Vitter Amendment (I woud expand the Vitter Amendment to include the SCOTUS)..

Listen: I can understand you not wanting to read people arrogantly telling you you're an idiot and fool and that your tiny pea brain cannot comprehend the complexities of DC politics blah blah blah.
I've done that in the past. Done far too much of it, in fact. It was stupid, unhelpful, wrong, and self-defeating. I've actually made a conscious decision to try and reform, change my commenting ways, so that I'm not falling into that 'reflex' anymore. You were right. You guys were right about that, and you've convinced me to try and be a better person around here.
But...but...if your argument is simply "get these dissenting opinions out of my sight, I do not want to have to see them!" then I'm sorry. No. Not cool. This isn't the Daily Kos, where you can 'downvote' dissenting opinions out of existence until their comments become invisible and the person making them is banned. We're conservatives, we're not liberal fascists. We're better than that. You are, I am, we all are.

The Gang of Cruz managed to self-marginalize conservatives, leaving a vacuum for the moderates to fill while the Dems sit back and watch the GOP fight amongst themselves.
Well that's a cute little strawman. Care to explain where you draw this conclusion? Conservatives are going to be the only GOPers left after 2014. Far from self-marginalizing they will instead take over the Party of the 'Pubbies.
And yeah, I know that that means the fucking Demonrats will have majorities in Congress and the Presidency. As has been pointed out many times, how is that any different from what we have now?

Once again, I do not have a problem with these outside groups doing their job. If they have good reasons for opposing legislation, they should voice those concerns. But that is not what happened here. If you look at the coordinated efforts of these outside groups and two conservative websites, their closest connections inside Congress, and how said members have behaved throughout, you will see that these outside groups were at least partially motivated by a desire to settle old scores, both now and in 2014. They went so far as to side with the Administration and congressional Democrats last night. Unacceptable.

I think people like McCain and Graham need to go, but I also think there's a dingbat wing that's just as spineless as the RINOs, they're worried instead about some sort of O'Donnell dingbat primarying them so they just basically hand the keys to Reid and Obama because taking your ball home is not winning.

Look: just because people find the 'inside baseball' angle to discussing what's going inside the House GOP right now to be distasteful -- and I understand the opinion of folks like grognard and t9, because seriously why the hell should they have to care, whatever happened to the actual issues? -- does not mean that it's not a very real element. Surprise, surprise: conservative politicians (even the very conservative ones who are 'right' with us here in active base) are human beings prone to every human failing that affects other humans. Factionalism, petty intrigue, self-serving behavior...you name it. The Establishment bigwigs are capable of it, and the Tea Party conservatives are capable of it. In other words, they're scared of the big, bad MFM. Cowardly nickelfuckers, the lot of them.
Here's a tactic that could have been tried - pass a budget. Drop it on Reid's desk. Hold a press conference. "We've passed a budget. As soon as Reid takes his chancre-ridden drippy weiner dick out of a Cub Scout's ass, maybe he'll pass it. We did our job. We're going home. Fuck you very much."

If I thought people here were "reactionary fools who are unwilling to acknowledge the obvious" then I wouldn't waste my time. You do realize that, right? This ISN'T like the old joke about the bear and the hunter ("you don't really come here for the hunting, do you?") for me. I think some people are more dug in some things than others, and often times the only thing that will work is time and perspective, but you know what? With the right approach, people CAN be convinced.
My mistake has always been falling back into snark and rudeness. Now if I'm provoked, sure, I'll hit back hard. But if you want a hostile audience to respect where you're coming from, it's a good idea to not start off by saying "all y'all are a bunch of redneck idiots" and proceed from there. I've lost sight of that in the past and I'm trying not to in the future.

I'm looking at the details of the Senate compromise (cave), and isn't it the exact same thing that the House passed right before the shutdown started? Ok, the debt limit is part of it now, that wasn't in the original fight.
But I thought the sequence was:
1) Pass the defund CR - Senate votes it down
2) Pass the delay CR - Senate ignores it
3) Pass a CR the requires Senate to go to conference - Senate ignores it
4) Shutdown
Isn't the thing coming out of the Senate the same as #3? It's a pass a CR and Debt limit extension and force the Senate to conference by Dec 15.
Maybe I'm misremembering what happened on that last day.

Some of us were hoping for more...
More is good. Getting 75% of what you wanted is better than holding out for 100% and getting 5% instead.
A "surrender" would've been passing a "clean" CR and debt ceiling bill right off the bat, before the shutdown. They didn't.
Over and over they were told to FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT. Even if facing impossible odds, showing some BALLS might set us up for a win next time. And guess what? They did that- a month ago almost nobody would've predicted they'd let a shutdown last this long.
Do they get any credit for it? Nope. Just whining that they didn't achieve the impossible.
But hey- Ted Cruz got some camera time, and that's what's really important, right?

You ought to run for office, Hollowpoint. You've got all the prerequisites; narcissism, self-righteousness, and an incapacity to think outside your own perspective.

1) Why does the media keep covering for Obama, when he and his administration are so obviously fuck ups?
2) Why do Democrats keep trying to increase spending, no matter how much further into debt we go? I can understand not wanting to give up on current spending, but actively trying to increase just seems nonsensical.

Votes don't buy themselves. Now that the FSA owns them and they own the FSA, they must forever placate them with bread and circuses. The Dims are now Roman Senators playing their end game with the budget. They are busy stealing as much as they can to fund their villas and vineyards far from Rome in the hopes that the rabble and the Legions never come for them. This is a vain hope, but, that is all they have.
BTW, Barky's villa in Hawaii is just as far from DC and the rabble as it's possible to be. The only question is...does he get to move Reggie into it or does RL have to stay in the cabana?

the Senate Repubs were willing to surrender, right at the outset.
If the Repubs wanted a WINNING Strategy? The talking point would be that the is Harry Reid's shutdown.
The House should have passed ALL the rest of the Normal Appropriation bills.... like the ones already sitting in the Senate.... Then they could have just Pointed at REID every time someone said shutdown.
And could have defunded Obamacare in the HHS and IRS potions of the NORMAL Appropriations bills...
But the Repubs are clueless.... so Harry Reid WILL win, and get to maintain funding at current levels PLUS... without any input from the Repub House as to where and how to spend that money.... as the CONSTITUION says they should.

McConnell up for re-election in 2014, with a metric shit ton of cash
The five-term Kentucky senator ended September with nearly $10 million on hand for his primary battle with Matt Bevin, a Louisville businessman who has been seeking Tea Party support for his candidacy, McConnell's campaign announced Friday. He's spent more than $7 million to keep his seat.
Bevin said his campaign brought in $822,021. Most of the money — $600,000 — came from Bevin.

I saw some dark humor in that graph linked the other day regarding deficits for presidents in the modern era. Thanks to Cruz et al, we're in a no-win situation. There is no winning strategy, which is why I and others were opposed to going this route in the first place.
All we're left with is the humiliation of having to beg Reid to throw some small concession our way in a futile attempt to save face. That's the only play we have left.

Posted by: polynikes at October 16, 2013 08:51 AM (m2CN7)
But in hindsight, shutting down government is a hill you can die on. The result is loss of nothing the LIVs really care about, and a lot of great optics of jackbooted park service gestapo beating up 90 year old vets.
Debt limit isn't one you can die on, or at least not one anyone in the GOP is willing to try fighting on. The administration is too willing to decide to not cut social security checks.
I think that if we go back in time, would would have done better passing a clear debt limit extension back in the summer, then letting a shutdown happen. No one was really willing to budge until this week.

First of all, McCain thinks he possesses more power than he actually has and he only speaks for a small minority. Second, this idea that McConnell and McCain are the only alternative is not only false but a poor excuse. I repeatedly said that neither defund nor delay would work unless the vulnerable Senate Democrats felt that they were in danger of losing their seats. The messaging on that point got lost in the infighting and the aforementioned Democrats firmly believe that they are going to keep their seats because they never felt much pressure.

Right b/c "Senate Majority Leader John McCain" defacto works so well for us
Will you just get it over with and have a late night three-way with McCain and Graham already? A good old hate-fuck to get it out of your system?
Your obsession with John McCain is getting old. He doesn't represent the party. McCain represents McCain. There's exactly zero chance that McCain would be made Majority Leader if we won the Senate.
Posted by: Hollowpoint at October 16, 2013 09:27 AM (SY2Kh)
Uh McCain represents a group of 4-8 "GOP" Senators who get hard ons at trying to "really run the Senate" with usually 4 liberal Donks...
I could give three fucks about your labelling me whatever given your own "standing" but do not try to sell that "McCain only represents McCain" horsefuckery.

I believe gubmint gets the rounding error. Office Space style.
Nickelfucked.
Posted by: grognard at October 16, 2013 11:34 AM (/29Nl)
It's a wash. Your bill comes to $4.73, they round up to $4.75. If it comes to $4.72, they round down to $4.70. Sales tax is 5% (at least here in Alberta), and it's added to the subtotal at the till.
In practice, say I buy a slice of pizza and a coffee for $5.83 (tax in). I hand the cashier a five, three quarters, and a nickel. Close enough. Because the next guy who orders the same hands her a five and a loonie, and gets fifteen cents back. Store is even, I'm up two cents, and the other guy is down two cents. Tomorrow, the shoe may be on the other foot. I suppose, if one was really bound and determined, he could chisel enough so he (possibly a business) was continually ahead of the game. Everybody needs a hobby, I guess. For a business like, say, McDonalds, gaining two cents on every transaction would be huge dollars in the long run. For me, doing probably less than ten such transactions a day, on average, the psychic cost of worrying about it all vastly exceeds any benefit/loss to be had by habitually winning/losing on the rounding error. If I "won" every time, I'd be ahead 20 cents a day. BFD.

The government passes a law that exempts itself, and not a single fucking peep from anyone in a position to draw attention to it, outside the few who are now apparently double-plus ungood.
The government chases citizens out of national parks, and not a single fucking question is allowed to be asked that might draw attention to it, and not a single fucking swingin' dick steps up to say, "Fuck you."
The government weaponizes itself and goes after citizens who disagree with it, and the only thing the left deigns to say is that the "lousy teabaggers had it comin', being all dissenty" and shit.
The government gets caught spying on the whole fucking world, and we're all just OK with it, cause a few news cycles have gone by.
Fuck me.
