American Tire Manufacturer to French Governmenment Official: Drop Dead

Is this real?

It's so... undiplomatic I wasn't sure. (And the letter itself has lapses in grammar, as if written by a non-native speaker.)

But it does seem to check out, at least as far as superficial background-- Marice M. Taylor is the head of Titan Tires.

Per the letter: A French minister of Industrial Redevelopment tried to interest Titan tires in opening an operation in a shuttered plant in Amien.

Dear Mr. Montebourg:

I appreciate your thinking that your Ministry is protecting industrial activities and jobs in France. I and Titan have a 40-year history of buying closed factories and companies, losing millions of dollars and turning them around to create a good business, paying good wages. Goodyear tried for over four years to save part of the Amiens jobs that are some of the highest paid, but the French unions and French government did nothing but talk.

I have visited the factory a couple of times. The French workforce gets paid high wages but works only three hours. They get one hour for breaks and lunch, talk for three, and work for three. I told this to the French union workers to their faces. They told me thatÂ’s the French way!

The Chinese are shipping tires into France - really all over Europe - and yet you do nothing. In five years, Michelin wonÂ’t be able to produce tire in France. France will lose its industrial business because government is more government.

Sir, your letter states you want Titan to start a discussion. How stupid do you think we are?

Update: Tasker found the CEO's blog, but I can't find it. However, I found this article which establishes the take-away here: Morry Taylor is called "The Grizz" owing to his negotiating style, which is all Flying Bearclaws and Hibernation Holds and Honey Bottom Seatdrops.

3 Ive been wondering about something about a line in SKYFALL about male homos. During the scene with Bond and the gay villain Silva, Silva tries to make 007 uncomfortable with a sexual advance. Bond responded by saying how would you know it would be my first time, or something like that. I've been trying to suss out the purpose for that line in the script. Was it a nod to the gay audience?

He was very clever and really loved what he did. I could sti best him in the marketplace of ideas which got old for him after a couple of semesters- he'd beat me with volume and the bully pulpit. 80 59 - This is all true, yet, to be at all successful in France, one must take the French Bac (baccelaurate) which most people say is harder than our legal Bar exam. The French education system is excellent and it leads to the Bac, several days of extremely intense tests, none of which are multiple choice like our SATs. So it's interesting that the culture likes to loaf. Maybe they're tired from all the studying. But the French curriculum and its education system is the main reason I enrolled my daughter in a French school here. She will ultimately, go on to prepare for her international Bac, beginning in 9th grade.

204 It's a shame because I have met some wonderful French people who are temporarily living here. These particular people speak English so well and accent-free, you wouldn't even know they were French. I wish all French people could learn English that well. The people I'm friendly with in particular, have made a huge effort. Some of them don't even want to go back to France. One woman in her mid 20's who is wonderful, kind and incredibly intelligent - with a Masters in linguistics from DePaul University, is very sad at the prospect of having to return to France in July if she does not find a full time job in her field: education. She is a wonderful soul. The Visas there make it difficult for the French to remain here for extended period of time and work while they're here.

When I was a contractor working with civil servants, they could retire as soon as (years of service) + (age) = 80, as long as you were 50 years old. So there were a lot of guys who retired right at 50. And the kicker was at that time you could subtract accumulated sick leave from your retirement date. The guy I worked with was able to clear out his desk six months early. The system isn't as nice now. I think the minimum age got raised.

The problem is that we don't start teaching languages early enough in this country. It shouldn't wait until high school. 287 More than 20 years ago I was on my first business trip to France.  At the end of my first day there, I got a call that my Grandmother had died.  All the arrangements were made for when I got back to the states in 4-5 days and I did my best to get through the trip as professionally as possible.  The day before I left was Sunday.  My contact person in-country invited me to come with he and his family to Mass.  He didn't make a big deal out of it and I accepted.  It was in this very old stone church in Milly-la-Foret.  Went in, sat down and to my amazement, they did a funeral Mass for my Grandmother.  In French and Latin.  I only understood her name - but I know how the Mass goes.  I cried through the whole thing.

My contact had just met me and the priest and parish knew me not at all.  For all their other failings, I will always be grateful to the French for touching me very deeply that day.

The simple past ("he ran") does exist, but it used almost exclusively in writing. Speech uses the imperfect ("was running") and the past perfect ("had run"). But no "he ran." it's retarded. They seem to have done this because it's marginally easier to remember the other tenses.

I'm fluent in Spanish and am conversational in French. Used to be fluent in both. Lived over in Spain and France when I was younger. But the French curriculum is stellar. Very structured. The kind of structure that's good for my kid. Plus they all look so cute in their red, white and blue uniforms speaking with perfect French accents.

From dealing with people who do business in Germany, one of the interesting things is how each town makes a particular item or product and the whole town or most of it works in the same factory. 

 

Like in one town, they are known for making carburetors, so everyone will work at several carburetor plants.  Then the next town over there will be one or two main plants that make catalytic converters.  A very interesting way of ordering a modern manufacturing society.

 

Towns known for products.  We've got some as well I suppose, but most of that goes with food.

But why should we spend the time and effort on teaching French of all things?  For that once in a lifetime visit to Paris?  In case your plane crashes in Quebec?  To impress your date in a French restaurant?

If someone wants to do so voluntarily- great, go for it.  As for taking time from more practical and important subjects in school, we do too much of that already.

This isn't Europe where spending a few hours in a car or train transports you to a foreign country that speaks a different language.  Spanish would be useful (like it or not) for those in states bordering Mexico, but otherwise?  I'd rather kids be taught something more useful.

But, there are studies to show that the earlier you learn a language, the better it is for your brain, that you can learn other subjects more easily. I have witnessed this first hand with my daughter. Her entire curriculum is taught in French - math and science as well. She only started mid kindergarden year. She is now practically fluent. Her brain thinks differently. She can understand math when it's taught in French and just as well as when it;s taught in English. Anyway, speaking of French, we need to head to her ballet class. The simple past is not all that difficult. The passe compose requires learning just as much irregular radicals as the simple. Plus, there is that noun agreement complication. I get that the Passe Compose is sort of marginally easier. Whatev's, I guess. Frankly I find the imparfait easier than all of them (one solitary irregular verb, and it's an easy one).

The situation creates a problem for learners because reading the three musketeers in french, while helpful, is teaching you a bunch of verb tenses you have no need for in speech. You'd think the best way to learn a language would be to read a book in that language; but the utility of this is diminished in French. I have basically gotten most of the simple past down (at least I recognize it) so it's not the worst thing in the world. But it is a little unhelpful that the written language departs from the spoken one.

Here's a French paper (website) purporting to show an image of the original letter (in English, with company letterhead) and providing a translation:

Doesn't prove that the letter is real, but if we don't hear a sharp debunking soon from the purported author, then we can start to be more sure.

Amusing: Most of the French-language comments appear to praise the letter.

All of the commentors at that site are basically supporting Maurice Taylor, the CEO of Titan Tires. It's a business page, so I suppose that's not entirely unexpected. This particular audience understands economic issues, so they know how the French government is killing jobs. They're criticizing Montebourg and French policies. They agreed with Taylor. Actually I think they rather enjoyed that he told Montebourg off. There appeared to be some relief that someone finally said what they were all thinking.
