— Dave in Texas Churchill's speech at Westminster College, this day, in 1946.
There were many fond references to hopes of the United Nations, sprinkled with fops about an"international armed force" based on Anglo-American dominance. There were references to our recent war cooperation with "my wartime comrade" Uncle Joe.
But as a minister without portfolio, he called it like he saw it, and he laid out the future of the Cold War.
From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic an iron curtain has descended across the Continent. Behind that line lie all the capitals of the ancient states of Central and Eastern Europe. Warsaw, Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade, Bucharest and Sofia, all these famous cities and the populations around them lie in what I must call the Soviet sphere, and all are subject in one form or another, not only to Soviet influence but to a very high and, in some cases, increasing measure of control from Moscow. Athens alone -- Greece with its immortal glories -- is free to decide its future at an election under British, American and French observation. The Russian-dominated Polish Government has been encouraged to make enormous and wrongful inroads upon Germany, and mass expulsions of millions of Germans on a scale grievous and undreamed-of are now taking place. The Communist parties, which were very small in all these Eastern States of Europe, have been raised to pre-eminence and power far beyond their numbers and are seeking everywhere to obtain totalitarian control. Police governments are prevailing in nearly every case, and so far, except in Czechoslovakia, there is no true democracy.
He just couldn't see far enough past that, to our present dilemma.
Not bad though. Who could have, back then?

Into the looming dark
My old friend Winston gazed
Come hither friend and see the light!
He said with finger raised
So straining hard and squinting then
I saw a glimmer spare
By and by it closer came
Soon it would be here
It seemed so much a phantom
Floating there upon the mist
But as its bearing yielded not
I saw his satÂ’ric twist
The light was firm embedded
Upon a giant of wrath
And there on either side of me
Were rails that bound its path
I turned to see my world of love
In peril dire and dread
And wondered why I tarried so
When IÂ’d much warning had
Dear Winston tried to make a point
He did so as a Tao
That sometimes perils come as light
And recognize it now
For soon your group enlightenment
May be your abrogation
ThereÂ’s never peace where justice fails
And giants presage your nation

"He just couldn't see far enough past that, to our present dilemma."

an"international armed force" based on Anglo-American dominance.
Sounds pretty sweet right about now.

Stalin was quite the ungrateful, pushy dick. As Hitler's ally, the Brits and others warned him of the imminent betrayal, which ignored. After Hitler invaded Russia and the situation made him England's ally, they volunteered to send material aid to their former enemy. It was never enough.
He reminds me of someone...

Churchill's speech as taught in progressive schools:
From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic... lie all the capitals of the ancient states of Central and Eastern Europe.
Warsaw, Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade, Bucharest and Sofia, all these famous cities and the populations around them lie... in one form or another... and, in some cases, ... free to decide its future at an election under British, American and French observation... on a scale grievous and undreamed-of are now taking place... which were very small in all these Eastern States of Europe, have been raised to pre-eminence and power far beyond their numbers and are seeking everywhere to obtain totalitarian control... and so far,.. there is no true democracy.

Rick Perry on Greta. This is the man (off pain meds) I wanted as President.
I was pumped for him in 2012 too. But "It was the pain pills, baby, you know I loves you" ain't gonna work.
When the right candidate comes along, we'll know it. We won't have to make excuses for their behavior.

Winston Churchill, the most brilliant and accomplished statesman ever to walk the earth. His memoirs grace my bookshelves and his portrait graces my living room wall. The man was absolute greatness.

@fluffy:
I've read through the six volume cycle twice, once twenty years ago and again last year. Churchill gets smarter as I get older.
He is understandably biased and overstates British contributions in the later parts of the war when it was US dominance that prevailed in two theaters, but there is no overstating the resolve it took to stand alone as the last free rock in Europe when the rest of the world fell to Hitler, Stalin and Hirohito.
One of the few truly indispensable men of history.

He was the greatest statesman of the 20th century, rivaled only by Ronald Reagan.
