Too many Conservatives think every Obama voter wants free stuff. It makes them feel better about losing. The situation you describe is what really is the case. Too many people do not see Obama for hat he is. They go by the media image of Obama.

154 I predict that in the next 4 years, Preznit Fershizzle gets his comeuppance because

1) the world economy collapses and we go along with it. Ending the FSA's trough.

2) the country's economy collapses. (see above)

3) Everything he's "done" so far comes back to bite him and the Democrats. Hard. (See number 1 2nd half)

4) The Democrats and Media abandon his losing ass to preserve themselves.

Except for the nutjobs in the various State Houses enacting unConstitutional Gun Grab Legislation, we'll be okay.

Except for the World/US economy imploding.

I guess it's a final goodbye to John though since this will be the last home where we were *together*. Come to think of it, no wonder I'm bummed. Valentine's is a *terrible* time for final goodbyes. 282 So, after living in Michigan for three years and in the shithole-iest part of Detroit for six months, I finally have found a new job and my family and I will be moving to Boca Raton, Florida. We wanted to go back to Austin, but it wasn't in the cards. It's still going to feel like being let out of prison, of course. On the day we moved into this house, when we went back for the second load, the house was broken into and both our TVs, our Xbox and our PS3 were stolen. "Welcome to the neighborhood!" And of course, regular gunshots nearby at all times of the day. And then a few weeks ago, my daughter said she didn't want to go to school any more. She is the only white child in the school. At first this seemed like normal child reticence, but then I discovered that her classmates had been calling her "white girl" and "freckle face" and the older kids had actually been calling her obscenities. The fact that she is smart and likes to get good grades just made it worse. Frankly, once we move, Islamic terrorists could nuke Detroit into a glowing crater I would not give a fuck. It's enough to make a guy racist.

Great story, but I'm glad my kid didn't try anything like that. Let's just say his teacher doesn't worry about sunblock, and has already evinced a nasty tendency to conflate academic performance with political views. My son was paired on a project with a kid who'd previously expressed admiration for W, and on the project they got torched, even though I (a former university professor) polished their writing a bit.

And God help anyone who corrects her English usage. We faced a dilemma on helping little Guevara with vocabulary items, because in too many cases LaQuisha had provided grossly incorrect definitions, apparently as literal translations from Ebonics. We counseled him to regurgitate her rubbish (of the corpsman --> "corpse man" ilk) to avoid controversy, and prayed for the end of the school year.

I'll check into it. The good news is that little Guevara, and even more his older brother, are conservative and strong-minded, and therefore pretty impervious to this kind of crap. (Little Guevara is the one who disparagingly told me about "The Story of Stuff," which, if you watch it, is straight-up agitprop.) His brother is to the right of me, and extremely knowledgeable about politics (more so than I am), which is kind of his hobby.

So I'm not worried about the Communist rot infecting either one of them.

Right now, Java is hot .... before that C++ ... before that ... Long ago, Prolog was big, briefly ... RT and firmware are a bit specialized, and they usually don't overlap Java, C++, and the like. If you like firmware and are good at it, there is a good career path, mostly as a consultant. Exposure to RT and firmware is good, and best done while in school, or as a sideline on a job. If you don't like it, drop the class, or gut it out; it's only a few weeks. If it's The Job, bailing never looks good, so gutting it out is the only answer. This could be months. Try before you buy.

MOSCOW (AP) -- Fragments of at least one meteorite fell in the Chelyabinsk region some 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) east of Moscow, causing flashes in the morning sky and sharp explosions, Russian officials said Friday.

The office of the governor of the region in the Ural Mountains said in a statement that many calls about injuries and damage to buildings had been received. But there were no immediate confirmed figures or specific reports on damage.

Reports conflicted on the event: A spokeswoman for Russia's Emergency Ministry, Irina Rossius, told The Associated Press that there was a meteor shower, but another ministry spokeswoman, Elena Smirnikh, was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying it was a single meteorite.

The ministry said some fragments fell near the town of Satka, about 200 kilometers (120 miles) from the regional capital city of Chelyabinsk.

505 FWIW - Russia + Internet

A series of explosions in the skies of RussiaÂ’s Urals region, reportedly caused by a meteorite shower, has sparked panic in three major cities. Witnesses said that houses shuddered, windows were blown out and cellphones have stopped working.

According to unconfirmed reports, the meteorite was intercepted by an air defense unit at the Urzhumka settlement near Chelyabinsk. A missile salvo reportedly blew the meteorite to pieces at an altitude of 20 kilometers.

A bright flash was seen in the Chelyabinsk, Tyumen and Sverdlovsk regions, RussiaÂ’s Republic of Bashkiria and in northern Kazakhstan.

Lifenews tabloid said that at least one piece of the fallen object caused damage on the ground in Chelyabinsk. According to preliminary reports, it crashed into a wall near a zinc factory, disrupting the city's Internet and mobile service.

The Emergency Ministry reported that 20,000 rescue workers are operating in the region. Three aircraft were deployed to survey the area and locate other possible impact locations.

Witnesses said the explosion was so loud that it seemed like an earthquake and thunder had struck at the same time, and that there were huge trails of smoke across the sky. Others reported seeing burning objects fall to earth.

Police in the Chelyabinsk region are reportedly on high alert, and have begun ‘Operation Fortress’ in order to protect vital infrastructure.

Office buildings in downtown Chelyabinsk are being evacuated. Injuries were reported at one of the cityÂ’s secondary schools, supposedly from smashed windows. No other injuries have been reported so far.

An emergency message published on the website of the Chelyabinsk regional authority urged residents to pick up their children from school and remain at home if possible.

571 From what scientific knowledge I have, a meteor is pretty intense. The shooting stars we see at night are about the size of a grain of sand or a pebble

One that's big enough to strike the earth superheats the rock and the air around it.  Then you throw in that it's traveling at several times the speed of sound

The big ones will actually explode in mid air with the force of a 10 kiloton nuke, which is what is thought to have caused the 1908 Tunguska explosion

I think the number they toss around for Tunguska was more in the megaton range.  It basically deforested a few hundred square miles of Siberia, far above what Little Boy or Fat Man* could achieve.

576 Looks like the missle didn't come anywhere close. Of course, given that the meteor is moving at ICBM re-entry velocities of ~17,000 MPH and the missle is likely intended to target objects moving at less than a tenth of that speed, it's not surprising that they missed.

Meh.  I have only what I would consider very rudimentary knowledge of geology, and yet I understand that Ice Age is the rule, our current warmer client is the exception, and we're still not as warm as we were in the Medieval Maximum, where southern England was apparently to wines what Napa is now.

587...we're still not as warm as we were in the Medieval Maximum, where southern England was apparently to wines what Napa is now.

You mean before the Maunder Minimum?

That was a low point in solar output...and its been warming gradually since then.

It cracks me up that they've switched to 'climate change' instead of 'global warming'...when climate change is something that has been a constant ongoing process on this planet, long before we puny humans started burning fossel fuels in combustion engine.

There's no telling...lots of Hollywood types wouldn't want that book to be made into a movie.

It would expose their global warming religion for the hoax that it is.

Heh. I love that show.

They did one episode where they took the little lazers out of some blue tooth boxes and made a big lazer gun out of them.

The rocket car episode was cool too.

594 State of Fear was published within the last 10 years. Won't get a film treatment, I'm sure. Probably not such a bad thing, really. If they do it, they'll REALLY fuck it up. It'll make Lost World look like a faithful adaptation. They'll Change the ecotards into an evil corporation and change the enviro angle into some "economic 1%er terrorism" thing. You know they would. Prey might actually be doable, if Crichton wasn't a dirty word. Next has potential, but, like a lot of his stuff, might be too complicated for a Hollywood screenplay.

Still would love to see a good adaptation of Terminal Man.

At least we have Jurassic Park 3D coming in April--a movie that would have truly been served by that as opposed to some of the other dreck that's gotten the treatment.  Which was the better movie, Hunger Games or Avatar?  Hint: it's the one that was released only in 2D.

Posted by: Conservative Crank at February 15, 2013 12:38 AM (FqcJu)

596 Agreed, State of Fear has zero chance of seeing the screen, if for no other reason it might encourage someone to read the book.

Has nothing to do with how it was filmed, HG is just a better story.

Posted by: GGE of the Moron Horde, NC Chapter at February 15, 2013 12:41 AM (yh0zB)

598

Yes, it is, but the filmography itself was also superior in HG I'd argue.  Jurassic Park would have been mind-blowing seeing it the first time in 3D.

Posted by: Conservative Crank at February 15, 2013 12:43 AM (FqcJu)

599 I have to admit I haven't seen the movie (HG) yet so I can't attest to the cinematography. I do agree that JP would have been an awesome 3D movie. The first time T-rex opened his jaws pants would have been shat.

Posted by: GGE of the Moron Horde, NC Chapter at February 15, 2013 12:46 AM (yh0zB)

600 HG does something almost unheard of in modern cinema--appropriate, limited use of steady-cam.

How is tracking asteroids protecting our home planet from them? Offering safety measures for public info, where to NOT be in case of impact, is not "protecting" our home planet.

Posted by: panzernashorn at February 15, 2013 01:56 AM (MhA4j)

606 The only viable protection we have at this time are those eeeeeevil ICBMs that the peacenik morons keep trying to negotiate away with the Russians.  Because it totally serves Russian security interests to decrease their supply of missles and warheads, of course we should trust that they'll negotiate in good faith, not cross us later, and definitely not lose any nuclear materials to the black market.  /sarc

Posted by: Conservative Crank at February 15, 2013 02:00 AM (FqcJu)

607 Well the Russia air defense battery did claim an intercept altitude of 20Km or just over 12 miles up.

20Km is within the range of the mobile SA-10 Grumble, which is supposed to have a range of 30Km or 30,000 meters.  But that also means when they took the shot, the rock was close to overhead - the whole babble on slant range and such.  Then we get into the math of missile acceleration, max of 2Km/sec, of the SA-10 vs the velocity of the rock which could be about 25,750Km/hr.   We still do not know size of this possible rock and if the largest warhead an SA-10 carries, 145Kg, would be big enough to shatter it.

Of course the biggest reason against a hit is the the Russians actually having a unit at the ready.

615 If you want to get picky, go back to the Classics.  Or more precisely the annual tribute of twelve youths going into the maze of the Minotaur.  And how is the mystery of the maze defeated, because of love and trickery since one guy decided not to be a willing sacrifice.

I still crack up over anime fans who get outraged over Disney's The Lion King.  Namely Disney ripped off Tezuka's Kimba the White Lion.

Lets see Kimba's original name was Leo in Japan - even Tezuka admitted he wasn't very original with that.  Leo became the ruler when his father died, so the white lion cub escapes from captivity to travel back to Africa.  There Leo tries to bring the better parts of human culture to his domain while keeping poachers out.

So did Disney really steal anything from Tezuka?
