And the Nobel Peace Prize Goes To....
— DrewM

In a year that has seen the worst use of chemical weapons in decades, the Nobel Peace Prize goes to the group responsible for, um, eliminating chemical weapons.

Giving these guys a prize is like giving the GOP the prize for The Best US Political Party in 2012.

A lot of people thought it should have gone to a young girl from Afghanistan.

In order to make political points, thumbing their nose at rational and reasonable critics of the committeeÂ’s decisions over the past half-decade, the prize committee passed over Malala Yousafzai. At only 16, Yousafzai has become a symbol for women around the world living under regimes and in cultures that repress young women like her. After being shot in the head by Taliban rebels, Malala survived and now preaches peace. By surviving, she has won. By forgiving her attackers, she has shown magnanimity. Yousafzai is a truly special person.

Her very existence demonstrates the impotence of the forces of regression and oppression. But her survival and commitment to the cause of self-determination is also a testament to the beneficence of American military strength. She was attacked by the remnants of a regime toppled by the United States and its NATO allies under President George W. Bush – a regime which, if it were still in place, would have robbed the world of Yousafzai’s light. To elevate her to prominence is to tacitly endorse the war in Afghanistan. To acknowledge her accomplishments is to confirm that war yields victories which benefit humanity. This cannot be.

I'm not sure I agree with that.

In recent years the Peace Prize has become not only aspirational in nature but moved away from the original concept of creating and maintaining actual peace. As Alfred Nobel's will states the Prize should be awarded to a person who, "shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."

For better or worse, one man clearly stood out when it came to actually stopping a war between nations this year.

I am sympathetic to Malala and mostly agree with her on ends, but her belief we should send "books" to Afghanistan instead of "bombs" is great bumper sticker material and not much else.

Girls schools in Afghanistan are more dangerous than US arms trading outposts in Benghazi.   If you want to teach girls in Afganistan first you need to deal with the angry bearded jihadi goons who attack their schools with firebombs and gas.

Now they're a thing. Because the OPCW is impotent. They can't DO anything. And what they tried to do they failed at. Fail. Epic fail. 152 We don't punish failure enough. We need failure. Failure IS an option. Failure teaches lessons. But not only do we not countenance failure in our elementary schools, we don't even filter for it in our graduate schools. In particular, I'm looking at you, Harvard and Yale law schools. It's not surprising. Elites don't like competition, so they like systems that have a high bar to entry but require continuous labor. You earn your place into a club, you don't have to continually apply for membership. So all of our culture is now aligned against failure. And so we don't see the world as it is, but as we want it to be.

From Breitbart.com:

House Republicans have sent the White House a revised proposal to lift the debt ceiling for six weeks, as well as reopen government through December 15th, which was their original spending proposal before the partial shutdown. The revised GOP plan reflects the demands Obama made in a meeting with House GOP Leaders on Thursday. It also reflects the unwillingness of the DC GOP to face a fiscal showdown with Democrats.

In exchange for meeting, at least momentarily, all of Obama's demands, the House GOP is seeking a "framework" for future negotiations on addressing longer-term budget issues. These negotiations would be led for the Republicans by Rep. Paul Ryan, who is likely to seek a "grand bargain" resolving the nation's structural budget problems...

173 I fear Malala Yousafzai handlers will put her in danger that will get her killed. She should never set foot in any area where the Taliban can kill her. She may still have a rather naive feeling of the Taliban. This is a quote from the Jon Stewart interview.

“You must not treat others with cruelty and that harshly, you must fight others through peace and through dialogue and education. Then I said, ‘I’ll tell (The Taliban) how important education is and that I even want education for your children, as well.

“And I would tell him, ‘That’s what I want to tell you, now do what you want.’”

They want you dead....and will kill everyone including their own children if they get an education that sharia don't approve. No talking will make them go against their jihad to please Allah. No words in any language will show them how their interpretation of is Islam is wrong.

188 To be fair regarding places like Arlington, the families are notified in advanced that the placing of mementos, pictures, etc are not allowed. What is wrong is not notifying the families to return the objects and just tossing them in the trash.

From Drudge's headline story right now, at the AP:

In addition to ending the shutdown and increasing the debt limit, the proposal includes an easing of the across-the-board spending cuts that began taking effect a year ago, and replacing them with curbs in benefit programs that Obama himself has backed.

207 In exchange for meeting, at least momentarily, all of Obama's demands, the House GOP is seeking a "framework" for future negotiations on addressing longer-term budget issues. These negotiations would be led for the Republicans by Rep. Paul Ryan, who is likely to seek a "grand bargain" resolving the nation's structural budget problems... --- What the fucking fuck? I was trying to be optimistic and look for the pony in the horseshit here, but giving Obama everything he asks for is asking to be fucked over completely. Give him 6 weeks to negotiate, with the government REMAINING CLOSED until a final deal is reached. Letting the government re-open and then close down again lets Obama make another attempt at blaming Republicans when he is the one really taking a hit at the moment.

It's not confirmed this is his child, though it is extraordinarily likely that it is given statements by Adrian Peterson and it's not Adrian Peterson who is accused of the beating. It's the boyfriend of the child's mother who did it. The FFS is because of the incredibly loose shit surrounding that article. Of course it's TMZ. I should have known better. Presuming the story is true, no matter whose child it is, the jackass who beat a 2 year old needs to be curbstomped by the Vikings defense.

That is BULLSHIT.   A two year old boy!

Since it's a sports story I can't get to most of the sites covering it, but from what I gather they think he was beaten by the guy dating his mother.     If I were Roger Goodell, I'd turn a blind eye if AP decided to go beat the everloving shit out of that sorry excuse for a supposed male.

Now with extra taunting. at October 11, 2013 12:48 PM (VtjlW) EyeOn Football Report: Adrian Peterson's 2-year-old son beaten, suffers head injuries By Ryan Wilson | CBSSports.com October 11, 2013 11:25 AM ET Adrian Peterson left the Vikings to travel to South Dakota this week. (USATSI) Vikings running back Adrian Peterson missed practice this week to be in South Dakota for what orginally was vaguely described as a "medical issue involving a young family member." Now, according to TMZ, Peterson's 2-year-old son is in critical condition in a South Dakota hospital after he was allegedly beaten by the man dating the boy's mother. Officials told TMZ the suspect is Joseph Patterson, who has been charged with aggravated felony assault and battery of an infant. Authorities haven't confirmed that the child is Peterson's son (at least one report says the victim isn't Adrian Peterson Jr., but Peterson's other son). “At this point, we're not going to confirm anything," Sioux Falls Police Department spokesman Sam Clemens said, via the Argus Leader. "Who the father is does not come into play in this investigation, so we're not going to be releasing any information as far as that goes." Adrian Peterson's father told the Pioneer Press Friday that one of Peterson's sons was in critical condition at a South Dakota hospital, adding that the boy isn't Adrian Jr., but is his grandson.

216 159. Yes. Malala was given the cover story on a free magazine delivered weekly per neighborhood. That's what I read, Pakistani Taliban targeted her for going to school. How anyone can make her story "all about" US interventionist policy or as a virtue of war is so far fetched, complete disconnect. The only way any country "enjoys" liberty is when the people of that country demand liberty and exercise liberty. Hard and never ending work, Liberty. As with inalienable rights, no one can "give" them or take them, borrow, steal or sell them. They simply ARE within us, recognized or not, respected or not. Parable: wise virgins didn't give/share their oil upon request/demand when others ran out of supply.
