— DrewM Unsurprisingly, David Brooks is on Team Amnesty. He lays out his reasons why the GOP should support it and needless to say they are wanting.
After all, the Senate bill fulfills the four biggest conservative objectives. Conservatives say they want economic growth. The Senate immigration bill is the biggest pro-growth item on the agenda today. Based on estimates from the Congressional Budget Office, the Senate bill would increase the gross domestic product by 3.3 percent by 2023 and by 5.4 percent by 2033. A separate study by the American Action Forum found that it would increase per capita income by $1,700 after 10 years.
Ah yes, the CBO. The same people who predicted economic growth thanks to the so-called "stimulus" of 2009. That didn't work out so well. And then there's the CBO and ObamaCare.
If you're going to appeal to authority, try one that hasn't been so wrong recently.
According to government estimates, the Senate bill would reduce federal deficits by up to $850 billion over the next 20 years.
Again, see the problem with relying on the CBO above and this.
Conservatives say they want to reduce illegal immigration. The Senate bill spends huge amounts of money to secure the border. According to the C.B.O., the bill would reduce illegal immigration by somewhere between 33 percent to 50 percent.
Again with the CBO. But look at the underlying assumption in that point...spend lots of government and you'll get the results you expect. That's not something conservatives believe.
But if Team Amnesty is so sure that their "border surge" will work, why not agree to legalization? It's almost as if they know that the money will never be spent and if it is, they don't trust it will actually work. Amnesty supporters have seen this "legalization first, security never" game before. You guys go first this time.
Conservatives say they want to avoid a European-style demographic collapse. But without more immigrants, and the higher fertility rates they bring, that is exactly what the U.S. faces. Plus, this bill radically increases the number of high-skilled immigrants. It takes millions of long-term resident families out of the shadows so they can lead more mainstream lives.
Conservatives also want to avoid a European-style system where immigration overwhelms their country. Even the Europeans are admitting that hasn't worked out so well.
Brooks dismisses concerns that giving Obama the power to implement immigration reform will lead to him waiving security provisions.
Then it gets weird.
The second conservative complaint is that the bill would flood the country with more low-skilled workers, driving down wages. This is an argument borrowed from the reactionary left, and it shows. In the first place, the recent research suggests that increased immigration drives down wages far less than expected. Low-skilled immigrants donÂ’t directly compete with the native-born. They do entry-level work, create wealth and push natives into better jobs.
"Increased immigration drives down wages far less than expected". Wait. He admits it will drive down wages, we're just arguing how much? How is this an acceptable position?
This notion of a perfect labor market with no restrictions or barriers isn't a conservative notion, it's a libertarian one (they also pare it with deconstructing the welfare state). Ace laid out the conservative case for prioritizing Americans over foreigners quite well. David Brooks would do well to read it.
Then comes the cherry on the Sundae of Stupidity.
efore Asians, Hispanics and all the other groups can be won with economic plans, they need to feel respected and understood by the G.O.P. They need to feel that Republicans respect their ethnic and cultural identity. If Republicans reject immigration reform, that will be a giant sign of disrespect, and nothing else Republicans say will even be heard.
Respect? What exactly is respectful about people who come here illegally? Embracing amnesty means embracing policies that hurt Americans in order to provide benefits to people from other countries who have broken our laws.
Amnesty is bad policy and politics but worst of all, it's immoral.

This is stupid. Its admitting to a problem and than reaching for a cover-up solution rather than addressing the cause of the low-birth rates. And how can you claim amnestied immigrants will assimilate without adopting our culture's low-birth-rate culture? You can't have it both ways.

Possibly because state and federal governments pay low-skilled native-born citizens to sit around cities and not work.

*climbs up on soapbox*
A BILL DOES NOT SPEND MONEY. PEOPLE SPEND MONEY.
"We're going to hire XYZ border security agents, and build an ABC mile long fence! Look at all the money we've set aside for it!"
You can put as much funding shit in a bill as you want, but that doesn't mean it gets spent. It's put there as a sop to the fools who are content with the ILLUSION of enforcement. Not a g-ddamn penny will be spent on enforcing current laws, let alone strengthening them. You may get a handful more border security agents, but they'll be nothing more than aggrandized hotel concierges, stationed at the border to provide the incoming illegals with canapes and warm steam towels as they cross into the country.
It's BULLSHIT is what it is.

I don't give a shit what the GDP does. It's GDP per capita (because either the earnings are spread around, or the Dems' theft programs spread them around) that matters and adding 30 million to the denominator means a drop of about 10% from where you're at now.
Actually it's inflation adjusted GDP per capita that matters, but that's tangential to the topic at hand.

I would too. Most of those jobs I mentioned in my rant used to be filled by Black people--proud to do those jobs and do them well, but, then the RACE PIMPS convinced them that being a maid or chauffeur was the moral equivalency of slavery. So, when brown folks wanted those jobs and would do them cheaper, the servant class turned brown.

but I like this line: 'Low-skilled immigrants donÂ’t directly compete with the native-born. They do entry-level work, create wealth and push natives into better jobs."
I would like Brooks to sit down and explain that. I can almost hear him say that pork doesn't compete with chicken because some people don't eat pork, so flooding the market with cheap pork wouldn't force down the price of chicken. Perhaps a better analogy would be to say that an increase the number of cheap hookers on 11th Ave wouldn't drive down the price of Park Ave penthouse call girls. I know of at least one Dem running for office in NYC who could use that analogy.

1. The Poor USE more Social Resources, than the Rich... so you want MORE poor people and that will DECREASE the debt? When almost 50% pay no Taxes NOW?
2. The Way to decrease Illegal immigration, is to enforce the already existing laws... State and Fed Task Forces hitting IDENTIEY Fraud (which is a State Crime, not having to do with Immigration) would KILL Illegal immigration... Problem now is that since those laws are not enforced, they do not FEAR to come here.
3. If anyone wants to see what the economy is like 'if' they grant amnesty, just look at the California Central Valley. A once vibrant economy changed as the cultural makeup of the inhabitants changed... from a very good economy... to one of the worst in the Nation.
4. The Jobs these immigrants will take, will be the entry level jobs our KIDS need... heck... my Girlfriends 19 year old Son has been seriously looking for work for 5 months in Manteca CA... but as he does not speak Spanish he is at a competitive disadvantage.
Amnesty is the idea that they will screw the Existing Citizen, for some future payoff.... its like Social Security all over again.... and stupid.

I've heard the argument framed in an economic context that more illegals in the country (more population), increases aggregate demand thereby stimulating the economy for more goods and services.
That argument annoys the ever living hell out of me. What do these people think the illegals have been doing all the time they've been here? Do they think the illegals HAVEN'T been buying things? Do they think the illegals HAVEN'T been utilizing services? Just because they're "in the shadows" doesn't mean they don't have to eat, sleep, drink, live somewhere, wear clothes, do laundry, etc, etc.

Here comes that radical idea again--the one which is universally ignored by BOTH sides.
Amnesty is unnecessary. The frame work for a workable solution is already in place--no further legislation is required at this time.
That radical solution is as follows------
Secure the Border and ENFORCE EXISTING LAW.
Again, why is this so difficult to comprehend?

Being in "the trades" I run across more than my fair share of illegals working on jobsites. I don't know about the nannies or the cooks and maids and farm work illegals..... but every single construction "illegal" that Ive had "the conversation" with..... would prefer to take their cash, not pay taxes, and travel back and forth across the border at will. They want things to stay the way they are.

Resistance to Amnesty is in this case a populist position (for most) and he has taken not the elitist position, but I would argue, the anti-populist one. The reason for this is because Brooks is unworthy of being an elite and not included in the current functional 'elite' (as a house slave) so while he gainsays the populist position as an elitist might, he does not make a positive case for anything; he does not make an actual case for excellence, beauty or truth concentrated in individuals as Roger Scruton might, because he is a nihilist.
Here is the elitist argument:
Amnesty is fine, but only for places where the interests of the wealthy or powerful will not be negatively impacted by the expected influx of workers that documenting them will inspire. Places whose leaders and wealthy feel they would benefit more from restricting the influx of non-native born should be permitted to do so.
For some of us, there is a need for cheap labor to replace native born workers (particularly blacks and second generation Hispanics) who are more costly to employ and less determined to work. The increase in crime from young Mexicans does not affect the areas where we live, while the impact of granting a large number of people legal status, politically, stands to be positive for us. Furthermore, the suppressing of wages for entry-level people could potentially reinvigorate a number of our investments, cutting costs and thereby increasing profits, which benefits our status.
Others may have differing opinions based on their particular investments and circumstances.

I don't accept their numbers - whoever that is - but, first, is that inflation adjusted dollars after projecting 10 years or just a fixed number after the dollar collapses? Whooptido. And doesn't that contradict Brooks' statement that wages will be driven down, just not at a worse rate from some other rosy scenario? Explain the contradiction.
Also, per capita income can be whatever; but what of per capita expense? Where is that number since so many of the low wage earners will, by necessity and current policy, be partial wards of the State?
Bullshit math from top to bottom. Net cost to the taxpayer will be increased which is to say the national debt will be accelerated down at an even faster rate. By then we'll be on a barter system so wages will be paid in toilet paper.

The arguments against conservative immigration reform are in the same vein as the arguments used in the fight against conservative welfare reform.
The elitists insist that jobs will go unfilled by citizens and hurt the economy because they are jobs Americans don't want to do. In the welfare reform fight the argument was that former welfare recepients would be starving in the streets.
Both arguments use scare tactics and one was proven false just like the other one would be.

It may depend upon the state. Pete Wilson basically told the California Pro-Life Activists that they were like Don Quixotes tilting at the "bill mill" here in California, and he was right. We can't even get *parental notification for minor* laws passed here, after THREE citizen initiatives, and CA went abortion-on-demand in 1967, under then Governor Reagan no less.
But Wilson understood what would happen to California if the immigration issue was not addressed, and the opportunistic Greedheads and immigration romantic Hispandering fools in the GOP did not.

#278: You import more people likely to partake of social spending, and what do you expect to happen?

These are things to be practiced either in private or limited company. America should not be obligated to deferential to the customs of its immigrants, rather, immigrants here are obligated to accommodate America's customs when they come into contact with them. If they can't or won't do that, then the solution is simple - go home.

David Brooks is not a Republican. At a minimum he is a RINO, at maximum, he is a product of the the dim's operation Chaos, to plant closet progressives in the Republican party, like McShame and Rubeo.

Seems to me prosperity would be the key. Bearing and raising kids takes a fair amount of $$$.

We could reduce illegal immigration to zero simply by allowing anyone to immigrate to the U.S., but I don't think that's what most people have in mind when they talk about "reducing illegal immigration."

Google "Affordable Family Formation". The areas that have it, vote republican. The ones that do not, vote Democrat, or even Commiecrat. The author, Steve Sailer, hits the nail on the head.

Unforutanely Perry is my governor also. I can honestly say that I haven't voted for him in years, even thosgh in all of those elections he was the lesser of two evils. As a result I voted for "none of the above." We have troubles in this state, and Perry is not the answer.

I do not have "White Guilt!'
Piss on all you Bleeding Hearts and the failure of your Shrinks to drug you into some sense of reality.......die with your failed ethos and know your efforts were......pathetic on a scale most absolute and putrid in the annals of Mankind.
How we, that know even tolerate your breathing the same air at this point is a statement to our collective tolerance.....but even tolerance has a finite limit.
DON'T PUSH TOO FAR............
