— Open Blogger OK, so I watched this trailer here:
...and I thought, hey, this looks pretty good. Maybe we're actually going to get a big-budget Biblical spectacle that doesn't suck.
Also, the way this trailer is structured, it looks like the movie is going to be a more or less straightforward retelling of the familiar Bible story.
Doesn't it?
But then I read this, and my hopes were dashed.
And for a more complete analysis, written by a Christian screenwriter who somehow managed to get hold of the script, read this.
It's is a long article, but you can just glance through it to get the gist. And if this is the script that Aronofsky actually used when he was filming, then the trailer is completely deceptive.
I don't often pay to see a first-run movie in the theater. I think 'The Hobbit' was the last one I actually went out to see. Movies these days just aren't worth the time or expense. 'Noah' might have been an exception. I might have gotten my fat butt up out of the Barcalounger and plunked down my $8 (or whatever tickets go for these days) at the theater because it looked like it could have been worth it.
But not now.
So the movie industry will have to find a way to scrape by without my $8. I am encouraged that the verdict of the test audiences who were shown this movie was that it blew chunks. So the suits at Paramount now have a $150 million stinker on their hands, and they need to decide what they're going to do with it. I don't think there's any way they're going to be able to polish up this turd enough to attract the audience numbers they would like to see, but who knows, look who got elected President.

"I’ve also watched with great anticipation as a post-Passion of The Christ Hollywood tries to come to grips with how to reach the massive faith-friendly audience and I’m concerned about the phenomenon that I see, which is films being developed for that audience by people who don’t understand it and are thus destined to fail. Then when they do fail, as expected, smug Hollywood executives declare “See, that audience doesn’t really exist.”

Here's a quote that illustrates Ace's point from earlier this week:
... postmodernists fancy playing God and changing the meaning of texts to suit their agenda because they believe language creates reality. Therefore, it’s okay to “make the Bible say what we want it to say.” This is manipulative narcissistic nonsense...

"One of the women on the ark is pregnant, and Noah decides that if it is a boy, it can live, but if it is a girl, he must kill it. We can’t have more of those nasty little virus-like humans swarming the earth. So most of the last half of the script is a family killer thriller like Sleeping With the Enemy, that asks the dark dramatic movie question “will Noah kill the child if it is a girl or not?”
No TV and no beer make Noah -- something -- something.

Did anyone in the film industry really think that Noah carried that much of a story? I'm surprised they haven't gotten around to Lot's two daughters getting him drunk and having sex with him; they can weave that together with Abraham and his other wife. Old People and Sex -- yum.

Noah has himself become a bit psychotic, an environmentalist or animal rights activist who concludes that people do not deserve to survive because of what they’ve done to the environment and to animals. Noah deduces that God’s only reason for his family on the boat is to shepherd the animals to safety, “and then mankind disappears. It would be a better world.”
He concludes that there will be no more births in this family so that when they start over in the new world, they will eventually die out, leaving the animals in a humanless paradise of ecoharmony and peace.
As Noah says, “The creatures of the earth, the world itself, shall be safe.”

I'm saddened, but not surprised, to see that the trailer is obviously misleading. Oh well, another movie I can avoid.
As for going to the movies, we only go when it's something we really want to see, otherwise we find a copy to stream or buy the DVD when it comes out. We're lucky enough to have a Movie Tavern in our area, $5 for a matinee (anything before 4:30pm) and $7.75 for evening movies. They have a full bar and kitchen and the seating is at tables, so you can have a meal, drink while you enjoy your movie.

The first link makes it sound as if Paramount wants to remain closer to the actual Bible story, counting on that for a better box office, and it's the director who wants to depart from that so they're 'working through artistic differences.'

from a translation of the "Midrash":
The sexes of both man and the lower animals were meant to be separated in the ark during the deluge. This is clear from the way in which they entered the ark: first Noah and his three sons went in, and then their wives separately (Gen. vii. 7). But when they came out of the ark after the flood, God commanded Noah, "Go out of the ark, thou and thy wife, thy sons and their wives" (Gen. viii. 16), thus putting the sexes together again. Ham among the human beings, and the dog among the lower animals, disregarded this injunction and did not separate from the opposite sex in the ark. The dog received a certain punishment, and Ham became a black man

The Noah story as environmental parable? Hollywood did this about 5 years ago in the flop Evan Almighty. Interestingly, EA was heavily marketed to religious audiences as a post-The Passion Of The Christ realization that religious audiences have real power at the box office.
Of course, the cretinous Hollywood assholes that marketed EA didn't stop to consider that a Noah story filled with crass toilet humor wouldn't go over too well with that audience. Failure of the movie gave them a convenient excuse to go back to religion-bashing.

Buddy, I won her heart the day I faceplanted off my horse into the only log in a 20 mile radius. Didn't cinch the saddle tight enough. And my quarterhorse managed to place me directly into the log's path when she exhaled.
When Ann laughed I knew she was mine.

Or as a friend of mine used to say, "If you can make a woman smile, you can make her laugh. And if you can make her laugh, you can take her to bed."

So this is a movie with no audience.
I wish Hollywood wanted to make $$ because then we'd have a lot more good movies out there. But all they care about is propaganda. Oh, they'll make six Fast and Furious but that's only so they have the $$ to make their precious crap.

But I just learned that Spike Lee did a remake of Oldboy, a Korean film and one of the best pics ever made.
Spike cast Josh Brolin in the lead.
That's beyond comprehension. Spike Lee and Josh Brolin take on a cinematic masterpiece. Hilarity and much loss of money ensue.
Did Spike EVER make a good movie?
