40 I don't think I've ever seen such a look of misery and dejection on the face of my daughter as I just did a moment ago. I sat down with her on the sofa and (as calmly as I could) tried to explain to her why the Republicans want to keep borrowing money. $328 billion dollars today - or $1,300 for every man, woman, and child in America -- today. I tried to keep my voice steady, but it became increasingly difficult - the rage and feelings of helplessness were just too much. She could tell something was wrong. I found myself at such a loss for words - nothing made any sense; nothing makes sense anymore. I finally had to admit, "I just don't know - I don't know what's going on in this country anymore..." When I finished her lower lip started to tremble and her eyes began to fill with tears, "Mommy" she said, "why are the Republicans doing this to the country?" Well, that was it for me: I finally fell apart. I just fell into her arms and we both began sobbing for several minutes. She had to comfort me and get me back on my feet. Sometimes I just think itÂ’s too much, but seeing the strength in my daughters voice helped me to get through.

I listen to them while I do other things, cooking/drawing/designing, so the length doesn't bother me; it's a feature not a bug. The fact I can't always tell who is who DOES bother me, but they've gotten better at announcing names. I do think they need something to jazz the podcasts up sometimes, more jokes or staple features (I still chuckle at the calling everyone Chelsea bit), and maybe get non-political guests on to wax about politics/news, but I'm happy to let it evolve into what Ace wants it to be. I still think we need an Ewok horn or something to announce the point of the show when Ace finally joins the convo; I never catch it's him until about three minutes after he's joined. If that's a barrel-able offense let me know, I will prep my barrel equip and snacks.

Really need to play with the format. Give a single person a chance to do a whole cast as an extended presentation, a one on one debate, an interview, something beyond old school Crossfire-style chatting.

For that matter, we do have an experienced theater major posting here, so I'm thinking -- musical comedy version.

62 I know he's a lefty and married to Speedbump enthusiast Amanda Palmer, but I like Neil Gaiman. Great article by him about science fiction, reading, escapism, and daydreaming in the Guardian:

ttp://preview.tinyurl.com/l42wz7g

"I was in China in 2007, at the first party-approved science fiction and fantasy convention in Chinese history. And at one point I took a top official aside and asked him Why? SF had been disapproved of for a long time. What had changed?

It's simple, he told me. The Chinese were brilliant at making things if other people brought them the plans. But they did not innovate and they did not invent. They did not imagine. So they sent a delegation to the US, to Apple, to Microsoft, to Google, and they asked the people there who were inventing the future about themselves. And they found that all of them had read science fiction when they were boys or girls.

Fiction can show you a different world. It can take you somewhere you've never been. Once you've visited other worlds, like those who ate fairy fruit, you can never be entirely content with the world that you grew up in. Discontent is a good thing: discontented people can modify and improve their worlds, leave them better, leave them different."

Everyone involved in this stupid stunt need to be fired, lose any pension, and be thrown in jail for lets say 2 years per student in that classroom. I had a teacher do something close to this in class. She had two teachers pretend to rob her in front of us. They rushed in wearing masks and took her purse. The lesson wasn't about being aware of your surroundings though. It was about witness perceptions and ability to remember. She had us try to describe the masked people. Then she brought them in to compare our written descriptions. Most of us were pretty far off. It was an eye-opener for me. It was a little startling I guess, but kids aren't really fragile flowers.

85 61 ---We are all here ready to go except the younger one's boyfriend, a liberal, whom I do not like. He is over 30 minutes late and counting. Typical. Posted by: Nevergiveup at October 18, 2013 06:26 PM (UbDLm) ---------------------------- Get your shotgun!!!!

86 Bad manners at any time, but particularly offensive on her birthday. She ought to dump him, after accepting his birthday gift. Posted by: Retread at October 18, 2013 06:37 PM (IiAs3) True. My son dated a girl in college and then when they both lived in NYC. I went up to see them, they had plenty of notice. She has an hour late for dinner at a very expensive restaurant. I made it pretty clear to son what an insult to me that was and suggested he might think about a new girlfriend. Amazingly, he dumped the selfish bitch six months later. Rude is rude. Rude is selfish and self centered. You don't want to marry rude. You give your word you will meet someone at a certain time. You don't? You have broken your word. You are a liar.

87 Wow, Juan Williams just made the claim that 404care didn't get enough money to get the software. Just amazing.

88 We did them, too. We always knew they were drills.

They never told us until afterwards.  Edgy.  Kept us alert.

89 We used to have "duck and cover" drills for nuclear war all the time. It never traumatized us. Many of us knew the effects of a nuclear blast and joked about people finding scattered lumps of dusty coal where the classroom used to be. Posted by: Soona at October 18, 2013 06:37 PM

I remember those...you must be OLD!

In the day, there was a bigass air-raid siren about a half-mile away that they'd fire off on the last Friday of every month. Made it seem more realistic, somehow.

I figured that living less than 20 miles outside Los Angeles made the whole exercise kinda futile....

90 I figured that living less than 20 miles outside Los Angeles made the whole exercise kinda futile.... Pretty sure Los Angeles will survive if itÂ’s a socialist country doing the bombing. Maybe not then, though.

94 Did the school elect a cis-gendered homecoming queen? Not hardly. Schools around here still have the Ten Commandments and "In God We Trust" up on the walls.

I used to live in town that neighbored a nuclear plant. It was only about 5 miles from my house across the bay. They had wired a siren system in my town that was supposed to go off in the case of nuclear accident. The week I moved in they had a test of the siren system which I had no idea even existed at the time. That was an interesting few minutes.

98 Good. It's up to you to make sure it stays that way. Raise them up.... My eldest was in kindergarten last year. First time they have a special snack in their room she jumps up on her chair "WAAAAIIIITTT!!!! No one eat! We haven't said the blessing! Now bow your heads while I say the blessing." She also spoke up when the week of the election, her school held a mock election and her teacher told all about how she was voting for TFG. Up goes my girl's hand. Btw, they just preceded the national anthem with a prayer.
