AoSHQ Podcast: Guest, Scott Lincicome
— andy

Bumped! While we work on other posts.

Programming Note: Given the holiday next week, we thought we'd mix the podcast format up a bit and answer reader questions instead of booking a guest, talking about the latest Obamacare clusterf***, etc.

This is where you come in.

If you have any thoughts/questions/comments/advice/requests related to the blog, send them to me at andy+asktheblog AT aoshq DOT com.

Send all other comments, hate mail, etc. to Gabe and/or Drew who apparently came up with this cockamamie idea.

Scott Lincicome, attorney, writer at The Federalist, Cato Institute fellow, etc., etc., joins Ace, Gabe, Drew and John to discuss Obamacare and GOP alternatives and the Census Bureau's unemployment data SNAFU. They move on discuss free market-oriented tax reforms based on Scott's piece on the child tax credit that we covered at the HQ and finish up with some quick hits on a range of topics.

Obamacare Shows How Americans Are Becoming Jerks

Good grief, that is one of the stupidest articles I've read this year.   The number of strawmen who had to die to make that writer's argument...

15 Yay! SMOD is upon us! I mean, there is no other interpretation of the sign and wonder that willow being first on a post is than that. I see no possible way that having the Horde ask questions can go wrong. Not a single possible way. RE: The Americans becoming jerks articles, first off, congratulations to the author on an awesome piece of linking baiting. No, seriously, that was fantastic, both in headline, content and sneering tone. Kudos to you! Secondly, I am sick (and tired) of the sneering condescension that supporting putting a gun to my head and taking money from my pocket to give to another constitutes noble generosity. Yeah, using OPM to prove how good you are is totes noble. Super totes noble.

18 That increased callousness extends beyond Americans' views of helping the needy. In 2007, 60 percent of respondents agreed that people should be willing to pay higher prices to  protect the environment .

and this..
One explanation could be that the financial crisis was so shocking that its impact on American values was correspondingly severe, and those values will take longer to recover. Another interpretation is that the political culture shifted during the past recession, with groups such as the Tea Party encouraging and reinforcing attitudes that would already be fading in their absence..

OR that much of the Financial crisis could be attributed to GOVT interference / influence !

70 Typical AoSHQ Question and Answer session... Frank Reynolds: Wait, I'm a little confused here. What's a twink? Dennis Reynolds: A twink is small and slender, like mac. Mac: Oh, no, I'm too muscular. I would be a bear. Dennis Reynolds: Uh, don't think so, bro. Not hairy enough. Frank Reynolds: Smooth. Now, I would be a bear. Dennis Reynolds: No, no. See, I don't think you'd be a bear either. As a matter of fact, I don't know what you'd be. You're definitely not a twink. Frank Reynolds: I'd be a top, that's for sure. Mac: Can a twink be a top or is that reserved for bears? Dennis Reynolds: I'm sure there's a great deal of switching back and forth but I think more often then not bears are tops, unless they happen to be power bottoms. Frank Reynolds: What's a power bottom? Mac: A power bottom is a bottom that is capable of receiving an enormous amount of power. Dennis Reynolds: Actually Mac, you've got it backwards. You see, the power bottom is actually generating the power by doing most of the work. Frank Reynolds: Does power have to do with size or strength of the bottom? Mac: Now Dennis, I heard speed has something to do with it. Dennis Reynolds: Speed has everything to do with it! You see, the speed of the bottom informs the top how much pressure he's supposed to apply. Speed's the name of the game.

80 55 About the Obamacare making Americans jerks thing, I think it's cute that they're pretending we're no longer in a recession. Not only has the recession not ended, but Obamacare is taking more money out of people's pockets, thus people are even less able to spend money on things that drive regular businesses.

It takes a special kind of fucked up to espouse those beliefs while the Fed is printing money at an inconceivable rate.

It's incredible to me.        According to leftists there is a set pot of money, and the reason that there are people who are poor and people who are wealthy is because the wealthy people hoard all their money and won't "spread the wealth around."

Then they'll turn around and say that we can never go bankrupt int his country because the Fed    can  just print more money to cover our bills.

85 As I mentioned before and someone else said earlier this morning, this sure looks like a preemptive move towards single payer. Never let a crisis go to waste. As screwed up as Obamacare is, with millions being cancelled on their insurance and many more millions ready to be cancelled, people are scared and confused. We're all celebrating and telling the LIVs that "we told you so", while Obama's ratings fall through the floor. At some point, Obama is going to say everything is so fucked up, a major change is necessary. He's got nothing to lose. Obama doesn't give a shit about the democrat party and he's been reelected, so the only thing left is his legacy. He's not going to go backwards. Between executive orders, the nuclear optioned senate and other general lawlessness, he's going to put single payer in place for as many people as he can. Obama will unilaterally expand Medicaid and Medicare to anyone not currently covered under private insurance. He'll make it so easy that millions will bail out on their policies and take the government option. I have no idea how he will get around the House, but don't start saying "He can't do that! It's against the law!" because that's never stopped him before. Plus, he will have the public on his side by giving away healthcare. He'll be a fucking hero. And we'll be standing on the sidelines with a dumb look on our faces saying "But...but...he can't do that!". But it will be too late.

Ah, but FDR remains an icon because people   (stupidly) believe he reversed the Great Depression   with his alphabet soup of gubmint programs and then WWII.

Obammy, on the  other hand, hasn't managed    to   get a single gubmint initiative started that    actually HELPS people   (25% black unemployement anyone?), and      has managed to piss off his leftwing base by keeping us in Afghanistan, failing to close Gitmo,    getting us into Libya, and then threatening to go into Syria.

I have no doubt Obammy will be canonized as a secular leftist saint, but I don't think his legacy will remain as    illogically untarnished as FDRs.

Long lay the world in sin and error pining. Till He appeared and the world felt His worth. A thrill of hope and change, the world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new Obama morn. Fall on your knees! 213 From RDBrewer's quote from the MSNBC article at RealClearPolitics (in the sidebar):

"The first is that relentless partisan criticism invariably leads to name-calling. ItÂ’s like a drug addiction -- you need more and more. Once youÂ’ve called George W. Bush stupid a hundred times, audiences want something a little different, so you graduate to 'worst president in history,' and finally, as Olbermann often did, a demented war criminal."

This is why I continue to try and think of new and increasingly vulgar epithets to hurl at my political and ideological enemies.   It's deeply satisfying.

243 remember in Catch 22 how Milo Minderbinder tried to unload his excess cotton by creating chocolate covered cotton balls and selling them for candy?  Well,

ATLANTA (CBS Atlanta) – Doctors and nutritionists are warning against what may be a new weight loss fad…the “cotton-ball diet.”

Several Youtube videos have been popping up claiming itÂ’s a good way to lose weight, reports MedicalDaily.com.

In the videos, young girls girls soak cotton balls into orange juice or lemonade in order to add taste.

The idea is to eat the cotton balls to limit the amount of food a person eats during the day.

Extreme dieters say the cotton expands in the stomach and tricks the body into thinking its full.

But health care professionals fear the diet craze could be dangerous.

253 But health care professionals fear the diet craze could be dangerous. Posted by: WalrusRex at November 22, 2013 01:26 PM (Hx5uv) Oh please neither this or the thigh gap craze are new. Soaking cotton balls in oj and eating them so that you have some kind of nutrition as you starve yourself so your inner thighs don't touch was a thing when I was in high school mumbletymumblety years ago.

254 It's just a hop, skip and a jump from soaking tampons in vodka for a quick high to eating orange juiced cotton balls.

255 The idea is to eat the cotton balls to limit the amount of food a person eats during the day. Extreme dieters say the cotton expands in the stomach and tricks the body into thinking its full. But health care professionals fear the diet craze could be dangerous. Proctologists tickled pink!

Apropos of nothing whatsoever, as part of my job's Professional Development, I am subscribed to an industry magazine that, with each issue, makes me question why I do what I do and what was I thinking when I agreed to do it.

Anyhow, the latest issue of this magazine included this little gem in the "Letters to the Editor" Section:

"...Here in Louisiana, our governor repeatedly says" Government must live within its means, just as our families do!" Wrong! I don't know of any family that is content to live within its means. People try to grow their means. That's what overtime and second jobs are all about. There is nothing wrong with government trying to increase the resources it spends on behalf of the American people."

How can you argue with logic like that?! The stupid just burns.

271 Wow, that "Americans Are Jerks" article is a real piece of work. It epitomizes elite attitudes towards the average American. It is a perfect specimen of the mass campaign of slander and detraction against average Americans and our traditions. This mass attempt to slander us amounts to an unrelenting psy-ops campaign. It's an attempt to portray us as the opposite of what we are, and so demoralize us. (One of our national traits that foreigners notice about us is our generosity). Our problem is not that we're ungenerous; we're generous to a fault. In fact, our generosity may lead to our destruction. It's not so much that our enemies lie, although they lie horribly. It's that they promote a whole "lie-world." This is what we're up against. We could present stats that show the amount of charitable contributions per capita, define charity as personal action, etc. and these might refute some of their assertions. The problem is they make no dent in the overall "lie-world."

Re: Scott Linicome's pov on the child tax credit:

WRONG.

The notion that the Dems will match and overtake every concession such as an increased child tax credit is patently false, because as one of the commentators pointed out, the Dem base is so strongly tied to singles.  Although Dem singles would potentially be annoyed by such a credit, few Republicans would.

Further, it's only, or primarily, the libs/Dems who would get bent out of shape about an imagined-by-Linicome "'breeder' vs. 'non-breeder' war".

Who among Republicans even *thinks* in those terms?  Very few, I would imagine.  (Likewise, who among the Tea Partiers even knew what "tea bagging" meant before some sick fuck liberal plant social-engineered it onto them?)

ALSO, research/Google Steve Sailer's idea of "Affordable Family Formation" as the GOP's "neglected key" electoral majorities.

That idea being, in sum:

Quote:

"In parts of the country where it is economical to buy a house with a yard in a neighborhood with a decent public school, you'll generally find more Republicans.

YouÂ’ll find less in regions where it's expensive.

It's a stereotype that a mortgage, marriage, and babies tend to make people more conservative.

But it's a true stereotype...  The GOP [sh]ould say to voters:

'We're on the side of making it affordable for you, and your children and grandchildren, to form families.' "

End of quote.

ALSO, social engineering is OKAY when you're engineering things in the right direction, which, by and large, a large child tax credit would tend to do

ALSO, and finally, Ramesh Ponnuru is right on this issue, as addressed by him in his post "The WSJ vs. the Child Tax Credit," and a number of other places.
