AoSHQ Podcast: Special Guest, Sonny Bunch
— andy

On today's episode, PhD's Drew M., John E., Rick Tempest and I are joined by Sonny Bunch, PhD, Editor of The Washington Free Beacon.

We discuss the media's rush to blame the AR-15 for the Navy Yard shooting, Starbucks' announcement on open carry, the Washington Redskins and the media's selectivity with regard to calling things by their rightful names and, last but not least, the Doctors reluctantly wade into a discussion of the GOP's internecine warfare over ObamaCare.

Pay close attention around the hour and ten minute mark to hear Dr. Tempest unveil his Barack Obama and Jay Carney impersonations.

36 The PC left is mounting this campaign because it makes them feel good about themselves—it grants them a sense of superiority, a way to show that they really really care

Well, perhaps.  It also gives them leverage over others allowing them to manipulate the inferior other. Especially the innocent, those who harbor self doubt, or have not bothered to think the problem through, or those not having time to educate themselves.

The PC Left feels superior, and uses that emotional state to browbeat and dominate others. Ego, and a projected authority will take you a long way.

53 Review how your GOP elected officials actually vote. 2008 Republican Party Platform http://tinyurl.com/mpttotq • We will insist that the budget reasonably plan for the long-term costs of pension and health care programs and urge the conversion of such programs to defined contribution programs. • Finally, while government requires corporations to budget for future pension and health care costs, our government ignores those requirements. No family or private sector business could keep its books the way Washington keeps ours. • We support the Government Shutdown Protection Act to ensure the continuance of essential federal functions when advocates of pork threaten to shut down the government unless their wasteful spending is accepted. • We will insist that the budget reasonably plan for the long-term costs of pension and health care programs and urge the conversion of such programs to defined contribution programs. • Republicans support tax credits for health care and medical expenses. Small Business: the Engine of Job Growth In 2000, when Democrats controlled the Executive Branch, small business faced a hostile regulatory agenda, from OSHA's ergonomics standards and attempts to intrude into the homes of telecommuting employees to IRS discrimination against independent contractors. Republicans turned back those threats, along with much of the onerous taxation that limited the growth of small businesses. We reduced their marginal tax rates, quadrupled the limit on their expensing of investments, and phased out the death tax on family owned small businesses and family farms. We enacted Health Savings Accounts to help small business owners secure health insurance for themselves and their employees. All those gains are jeopardized if Democrats gain unfettered power once again. Republicans will advance a multi-pronged plan to support small business and grow good-paying jobs: • Through the energy agenda laid out elsewhere in this platform, we will attack the rise in energy costs that is making it so difficult for entrepreneurs to compete. • Our tax reduction and tax simplification agenda will allow businesses to focus on producing and selling their products and services — not on paying taxes. • Our plan to return control of health care to patients and providers will benefit small business employers and employees alike. • Our determination to vigorously open foreign markets to American products is an opportunity for many small businesses to grow larger in the global economy. • Our approach to regulation — basing it on sound science to achieve goals that are technically feasible — will protect against job killing intrusions into small businesses. • Our commitment to legal reform means protecting small businesses from the effects of frivolous lawsuits. Using history as our guide, we look to innovative entrepreneurs for the ingenuity and daring that can give us the next generation of technological progress. The advances our country needs, in everything from health care to energy to environmental protection, are most likely to come from the men and women of small business. Enforcing the Rule of Law at the Border and Throughout the Nation: Our commitment to the rule of law means smarter enforcement at the workplace, against illegal workers and lawbreaking employers alike, along with those who practice identity theft and traffic in fraudulent documents. As long as jobs are available in the United States, economic incentives to enter illegally will persist. But we must empower employers so they can know with confidence that those they hire are permitted to work. That means that the EVerify system—which is an internet-based system that verifies the employment authorization and identity of employees—must be reauthorized. A phased in requirement that employers use the E-Verify system must be enacted. The rule of law means guaranteeing to law enforcement the tools and coordination to deport criminal aliens without delay — and correcting court decisions that have made deportation so difficult. It means enforcing the law against those who overstay their visas, rather than letting millions flout the generosity that gave them temporary entry. It means imposing maximum penalties on those who smuggle illegal aliens into the U.S., both for their lawbreaking and for their cruel exploitation. It means requiring cooperation among federal, state and local law enforcement and real consequences, including the denial of federal funds, for self-described sanctuary cities, which stand in open defiance of the federal and state statutes that expressly prohibit such sanctuary policies, and which endanger the lives of U.S. citizens. It does not mean driver's licenses for illegal aliens, nor does it mean that states should be allowed to flout the federal law barring them from giving in-state tuition rates to illegal aliens, nor does it mean that illegal aliens should receive social security benefits, or other public benefits, except as provided by federal law. We oppose amnesty. The rule of law suffers if government policies encourage or reward illegal activity. The American people's rejection of en masse legalizations is especially appropriate given the federal government's past failures to enforce the law.

CNN student news (yes, it is now my soapbox, what of it?) today featured a video segment on the Starbucks open carry letter. On their web page they suggested having students discuss "what might be the pros and cons of a company taking a public stance on a political issue"

On the one hand, it is an interesting question for the kids to talk about. On the other hand, their reporting was once again trying to skew how kids think about the issue. I am now fully revising my previous "CNN student news isn't so bad" to say, "dammit, now I have to read their crap every day just to de-program my son, probably have to give him a flea bath daily too to cleanse him of their foul emanations"

The fascist Limey fuckwad who sits behind me just went OFF on half a dozen cow-orkers who don't want a carbon tax and don't think the government should be manipulating the market to destroy industries (including the one we fucking work in).  And that smug "I am superior to all you science-denier cousin-humpin' clowns" totally came out...if you don't believe in manmade global warming you're an ignorant conspiracy freak and if you don't embrace immediate totalitarian solutions to this problem that hasn't been completely defined (or even understood to be a problem) you're subhuman scum.

He was actually spitting mad. "The science!  THE CONSENSUS!" and then I laughed--I couldn't help it, he sounded exactly like that guy who stands on the corner downtown by the monument on weekends and shrieks about how we're all damned unless we confess to Jesus RIGHT NOW.

Changing out the CPU seems a bit of a waste, if that laptop is even designed to let you do it.    I don't think you get the performance improvement to justify the money.

Hard drives, I understand, especially if it's to an SSD or hybrid drive.   Max out the RAM too, but I don't believe anything else on a laptop is worth upgrading.    (save the money for a new laptop in the future or something)

( Why unarmed military personnel on post? )

The policy of being disarmed on-base was a general guideline for all US bases, but the base commander had the authority to order an exception for his/her base.

That was until an executive order by Clinton which removed all exceptions. Signed in February, 1993.
