AoSHQ Podcast: Stand Your Ground (w/Guest @seanmdav), Filibuster, Detroit, Liz Cheney
— andy

On today's episode, Sean Davis (@seanmdav) from Media Trackers joins Gabe, Drew, John and me to discuss stand your ground laws, the Zimmerman trial and the Marissa Alexander case. Then longtime coblogger Rick Tempest joins us to discuss the GOP senators' cave-in on the filibuster, Detroit (speaking of cave-ins) and Liz Cheney's entry into the Wyoming Senate race. That last one takes some interesting turns, so you'll want to stay 'til the end.

6 I think opposing SYG ground laws is very anti-woman. Concealed carry and SYG make women safer.

Why do Democrats hate women? They don't want them to have guns on campii, they don't want abortion mills to be subject to health regs, BUT they are happy to send them to the front lines of combat where they can be blown to pieces.

Curious...

17 Democrats want us disarmed because they need victims. If there's crime then they can stump for crime prevention programs, etc. If you have a gun you don't need their help. It's that simple. It's the reason for most of their tsnaces - more victims = more constituents they can offer salvation to.

Oh, it makes tyranny easier, too.

26 In a nutshell... Liz Cheney has big ambitions, but they involve her, not the Wyoming GOP or the national party excepting her likely presidential ambitions. Rather than run in a competitive primary with Ken Cuccinelli and Bob McDonnell to challenge Democrat incumbent Mark Warner, Liz decided to challenge an old family friend ranked the fourth most conservative senator after Tom Coburn, Ron Wyden and Mike Crapo according to last year's National Journal list. Because Wyoming is friendlier to Cheneys than the state where she actually lives and will spend all of her time if she actually wins. However, Enzi is known and liked throughout Wyoming by his constituents, and he currently enjoys 70% approval ratings. So, Liz Cheney will have to work hard to paint him as old, "confused" and out of touch over the coming months.

62 On the McShitty surrender I disagree with those on the panel that said it was a good thing for Republicans.  Yes, it allows Republicans to block the Dems but normally we always have a sellout like McShitty who will break the filibuster with one of his patented deals.

But the big thing is the fgact that Republicans haven't had 60 votes in the Senate since the later 1800s or early 1900s. And most of the time it is Republicans who are getting blocked.

It is also why the Supreme Court has stayed liberal for so long.

69 I think this is just a way that Senators and Congressmen retain their power and protect fellow members of the club. I recall reading about how as a Senator, Hillary was the biggest contributor to her fellow Senators' re-election campaigns. And time and again McCain has shown that he has more respect for and allegiance to his fellow Senators - even ones like Reid and Schumer - than he does to his constituents or any upstart challenger. It's a club and they take care of each other.

One of the most singularly stupid things I have ever seen.
Let's rephrase this slightly: "Aside from the fact that the citizens,  by their choice,  designated, and for five decades re-designated, the people who were bankrupting the city, they are no more responsible than the victims of a chance weather event"

The absolute hubris of the NYT is staggering.

115 76. Is their a better symbol of the rot that infests the GOP and the Country than John McCain? Posted by: eman This is exactly what I was afraid would play out when he first ran for AZ Senate. POW, give every returning prisoner of war our deepest gratitude. But that does not mean it wise to entrust you lives in the hands of a POW, or any victim of abuse and torture during imprisonment. I'm not saying that prisoners of war are "bad". But I am saying that they've suffered torments that warp the psyche. The last thing a POW "needs" is to hold the fate of humanity at his whim. Best to return to a "peaceful" private existence. A tragic example, the old Hatfield/McCoy War grudge began between neighbor-friends when one Rebel soldier decided to desert and go home, "done with fighting", and the other stayed and was subsequently captured and imprisoned/tortured and starved by the North, barely surviving 'til the war ended to return home, bitter as hell.

This. Our "leaders" should be on the rooftops shouting this. I tell everyone I know, that every woman they care about should carry. There should be ads to that effect regarding Dems "War on Women". let women tell their stories about how they defended themselves and how the couldn't because of 'draconian' gun laws. How it would be a different life for Muslim women across the world if they had guns, and defended themselves against mutilation and abuse.

134 The Freedom of Information Act Machine, an open online platform that automates Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, launched on Kickstarter two days ago and has already surpassed its funding goal. At the time of publication, it had cleared $20,000 in funding from over 600 backers.

The issue is simple — the state and federal laws and processes for FOIA requests are complex, often purposefully so, and it can be a pain for even experienced reporters to navigate the process.

The FOIA machine does three main things: it automates FOIA requests; it tracks requests, their progress and the dates you filed them; and it aggregates information about FOIA requests and helps build information around how to improve the requests in the future.

Hell the nazis had female concentration camp guards also B) she was an anti-semite, not that obama would notice that C) and what does obama know about being held to account?

180 I had to euthanize a great cat that I'd had for 15 years last year. A few days later I brought my other cat in for routine care. While I was waiting, a couple of the techs who were there when Monkey was euthanized whispered something to the Vet and left. After the Vet was done, she asked me if I'd like to adopt a kitten that had been brought in the previous day by a client who found him in the middle of the road. I said yes, sight unseen, and they brought the little 5 week old thing out to reception. He fit in the palm of my hand, and started purring immediately. The Vet said that the woman who brought him in wanted a guarantee that he would never be an outside cat, and I said no problem. He's never been outside since, excepting one Vet visit. He's also 15 pounds now and acts like a dog.

183 I had an indoor/outdoor cat that loved to hunt. I don't know how it avoided the owls, coyotes,  and  stray dogs,  but it did.  Must have been lucky or smart.  Died  at the ripe old age of 20+.

184 Unfortunately (for MANY reasons) we live inside the city limits, and the discharge of a firearm gets you arrested. Let's not get started on that... Yeah same here, although I'm only three blocks from the center of town, I'm only two blocks from the city limits the other way because the old Quarters have a big salient coming in on that side that has never been annexed. The folk pop 9's all the time over there without being hassled. I'm jealous.

185 Between the heat, the humidity and the mosquitoes, I can only work outside an hour before I have to retreat back inside for at least a half hour.

186 I am not in the city limits but discharging any firearm here is a hefty fine for first offense.

ok horde put me in some gun knowledge

the GZ stand your ground group seems uber disorganized.  They are meeting in the high school parking lot prior to the march.  That was offered to them by police.  Some of them have CCHL and want to carry since there have been threats.  Some are arguing that a school is a gun free zone and you cannot carry your gun on school property, or even within a 1,000 feet of a school.  Any TX morons know stat law on this issue?

I will check and see if NRA website has info

189 Lautenberg law on the 1,000 feet of a school. Republicans should have repealed it when they had both houses. Instead they were too busy trying to ramrod amnesty through.

190 Also, IIRC the supremes struck it down one time before and the Dems made cosmetic changes to it and repassed it.

It hasn't been taken to court again.

191 well some guy claiming to be a lawyer is telling them if they stay on the sidewalk they will be OK.  I looked at the law that I could find and I do not think so.  I think that is why the police offered the school as a gathering place, to get the guns and stop the march

192 I take that back the Lautenberg amendment banned gun ownership by people convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence.  It was struck down and re-passed though.

The gun free school zones act of 1990 is what banned guns within 1,000 feet of a school. It also was struck down and then cosmetic changes made and re-passed.
