One of these years I'm going to try doing the league thing. Sadly, it will not be this year. I'm still too depressed about losing Welker to the Forehead. *sigh*

*SNORT* This is rich.
'Elysium' director Neill Blomkamp, star MATT DAMON!!! deny movie has political agenda
Fox News: http://tiny.cc/eg2h1w
The Hollywood Reporter calls it a “politically charged flight of speculative fiction.”
Newsmax refers to it “sci-fi socialism” and “political propaganda.”
Variety said its one of the “more openly socialist political agendas of any Hollywood movie in memory, beating the drum loudly not just for universal healthcare, but for open borders, unconditional amnesty and the abolition of class distinctions as well.”
But the director of “Elysium,” Neill Blomkamp, begs to differ, as does the film’s star, Matt Damon.
Blomkamp, who rose to fame with the Oscar-nominated sci-fi hit “District 9” in 2009, said his highly-anticipated film has no agenda whatsoever, and claims he isn’t a political filmmaker....
It's not political, okay? You all got that? It's not trying to make a point or drive home a message. Understand? You got that clear in your heads?
Okay, good. Now here's what it's about:
I don’t think it is trying to say anything. It just presents the issue – the distinct difference between the haves and the have nots,” [star Matt Damon] told FOX411 while promoting the flick. “A science fiction film will work if it is a whole new world, but speaks to the world that we live in, but not in a heavy-handed way. The first order of business for a big summer popcorn movie is to make a kick-ass movie with great action.”
Set in the year 2154, “Elysium” imagines a world where two distinct classes remain. There is the overpopulated, crime-riddled, poverty-stricken slums of Earth, and then there are the excessively wealthy who reside on Elysium, a slick, mind-blowing man-made space station that comes complete with a cure for every illness, and humans and robots that stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyles of Elysium’s lucky few...
See? TOTALLY apolitical! And anyone who says otherwise is a rightwing, Christianofascist Nazi!

My dad's big into the fantasy football deal. Every time he talks to me about it, I'm like "I'm lucky if I get to see the Saints and Tigers play on the weekend." I damn sure don't have enough time to keep up with every game to see if 'my' players contributed anything to my score.
I guess I could let the computer do it for me, but where's the fun in that?
Fantasy football is like dipping your toe into the statistics-nerd arena. Before you know it, you'll be a fucking baseball fan, quoting box scores of games that you've not only not seen, but that took place decades before you were born.

This ain't a charity. Maybe when UNICEF gets in the legal business, they can help you. Until then, I'm the guy to see.

A great concept which could have been executed better was the movie "Gamer" with Gerard Butler. Convicted criminals are implanted with chips, allowing them to be remote controlled by subscribers, who run them through a live-action first person shooter game.
The deal is, if the convict survives X number of battles, they get a pardon. I could follow a league like that. Or Fantasy Thunderdome League.

Word of advice to you all out there: A lawyer can only deal with the legal issues. All that other shit that you're dealing with? Not going to be resolved by a lawsuit.

I think he's doing his job. If his judgment is that his chances at trial are piss poor, then it's his duty to tell his client so.
The legal system doesn't exist for you to "make a point." It exists to remedy harms and resolve disputes.
And speaking to RoyalOil's selfish interests, how much other business is he not going to be able to bill for while preparing for an unneccessary trial? Sure, it's the client's decision on how to proceed, but that shit ain't free. You want full service, you pay for full service.

I've been (peripherally) involved with enough civil cases in Texas to know that juries don't like it when one party hasn't been trying (in good faith) to settle, and consider that when they're deliberating.
Posted by: AllenG (Dedicated Tenther) On Vacation at August 08, 2013 10:02 AM (ewXQL)
Juries are not provided information on settlement negotiations. They only know that one side has not agreed to the other sides settlement demand thus the trial continues. They come to their own conclusions.
I do not retain counsel again that have previously taken the attitude that a case is not defensible contrary our evalution. Unfortunately a common MO of more than a few defense attorneys is that a claim is defensible right up to the time a trial date has been set and then its , 'we should settle this thing' .

The tour of the Arch is rather a disappointment, so be prepared--the strange elevator ride is the highlight. However, the museum at the base of it is great--it's theme is the opening of the West and the last time I was there, the exhibits were great.

Dunno why I expected more, but there you are.
Of course at the top of the Washington monument there is....a poorly placed gift store and windows.
I actually haven't been back up since. But that's mostly because it's pricy as hell and the zoo is free and pretty.

I need to make an exception to my earlier statement. You CAN use the court system to make a point, if you have the money. My boss has gotten sufficiently hacked off in the past to push for a trial to avoid paying a settlement on a harrassment-type suit, just to stick it to whoever is trying to stick us for a quick buck, especially when he knows he has enough money to ruin someone foolish enough to pursue a baseless claim.
Also, we have a large bank client who has been the target of harrassing suits by a local dickbag 'consumer's rights' attorney. They've sent us explicit directions that if we are sued by this guy, THEY will bear the full cost of defending the suit and will pound this asshole into a grease spot with their Bay St. lawyers.
