This makes a great case for immigration reform.

 

"Legalize" those that are here by getting all of their information, where they're from, where they work and live, fingerprints, DNA, everything.  Put them on the long, slow path to citizenship.

 

Make it crystal clear that if they are caught registering to vote or voting, they will be immediately deported.  Same with any criminal activity.  No appeal, no years worth of legal wrangling, just a quick and and permanent deportation.

 

They would have to be really motivated to try voting with that sort of penalty.

The same goes for the border.  It doesn't matter how high the fence is, they are going over, around, through or under it.  It makes more sense to allow them in through the same process, have all their information, issue them a ID card and be able to immediately deport anyone who doesn't have ID.

 

Now, with actual ID, you can control the work permits.  Crack down hard on companies who use illegals, now that you have an ID that the company can rely on.  No work, no illegals.
