— Ace If someone isn't qualified to be Senator due to holding such a view...
He actually campaigned, initially, supporting the three typical exceptions (rape, incest, life of the mother), but then became -- as liberals and the media would say -- an "extremist."
Then Senate-candidate Hagel said that he "tightened" his position on abortion after he said he discovered that abortion in the case of rape and incest are "rare" according to multiple local press reports."As I looked at those numbers, if I want to prevent abortions, I don't think those two exceptions are relevant," Hagel said, according to the Omaha paper.

I know we are all supposed to oppose Hagel, and sure there is no problem with voting against him. But Obama did win and he should get the opportunity to choose his own cabinet. Sure the Dems would never go quietly with a cabinet pick they didn't like. But hey, Geitner, a known tax cheat, was allowed to serve as Sec of Treasurer. What difference does it make if Hagel is Sec Def. Obama is still the President. Our long national nightmare continues.

No, I want to focus on the things that truly matter. I realize the Dems fight over everything, but that is the difference between being a liberal and being a conservative. A conservative has other interests and just doesn't want to fight over other things. Sure we lose a lot because of that, but we are happier people too because we don't think everything needs to be changed. Its a conundrum for sure. Sometimes there are no good answers. I'd rather save some nomination opposition capital for a supreme court appointment.
Though, perhaps you can convince me that a potential succesfull opposition to Hagel will embolden the GOP on those future fights, so let's get the practice in.

Personally, I think the GOP is doing a good job with getting information out about Hagel. Ultimately, I think he will be confirmed, but it isn't a bad idea to make Obama expend some political capital on this nomination, or any other nomination.
The right stratgey on Kerry is not to necessarily oppose him (because he will definitely get through), but to hold up his confirmation hearing until you get some further answers on Benghazi.
So actually, I applaud the GOP. I don't think it will be a failure if Hagel gets confirmed. I really just don't care too much. Because in the long run, I don't think his confirmation makes that much of a difference. We know the direction Obama wants to take defense. And there are bigger issues at stake.

Sestak got elected to Congress when Curt Weldon, our district's longtime Congressman was railroaded out of office.
A couple weeks before the election, the Delco Times front page story was an FBI raid on Weldon's Thornbury house. That was six years ago. To date, no charges have been filed.

Block him. Just focus on the issues relevant to the job he's being nominated for. If that is done properly then if Hagel does get blocked, Obama's anti-Israel agenda will be exposed and it will be harder for him to pick that type of person next time.
Otherwise all you've done is personalize this onto Hagel, lessening the impact of what Obama's choice means in terms of his foreign policy.

Polynikes, I don't disagree. I just really don't care too much. I'd prefer a coherent strategy from the GOP. I just think there are too many Congressmen, who will try to block Hagel, use that to show they oppose Obama, but then roll over on the big issues. Probably because all they care about is the military. The military is important, maybe even most important, but there are other big issues at play in this country right now. And I find those issues to be more pressing.

131 The asshats in the senate will approve him. Collegiality and all that shit. I'm sure he and McSnails were best buds.
You mean McCain?
No, I don't think so, Soona....Hagel voted for Barky in 2008.
So he voted for the Clusterfuck, over a fellow VietNam vet.

I also think a President should be given the opportunity to chose his own cabinet, basically subject to a confirmation vote. This is very different than a court appointment. A cabinet appointment, though serving the country and in the line of succession, serves under the President. It is very unlikely that they will ever become President through succession. A court appointment is an apppointment to a co-equal branch. And for a Supreme Court appointment, the stakes are higher.
Therefore, I believe that strong opposition should be reserved for court appointments, as they will have a longer influence than a cabinet appointment.
And while the President must expend some political capital in getting his cabinet members approved, the opposition expends whatever political capital they have in opposing such person. IMO, the public generally believes that a President should be given latitude in choosing his cabinet. Even Bush was able to get most of his appointments confirmed.
Thus, I believe the GOP should really not spend a lot of capital in opposition. I don't believe they have, but since Hagel will likely be confirmed, I'm not going to get too worked up about it.

If you look at Hagel's record he has never advocated for military cuts. In fact , he took the opposite position. I guess that would be good cover for Obama when the cuts come.

165...Good, obstruct away, that's what they are there for.
It was the 'obstructionist' policies in the 90's that gave Clinton that balanced budget and surplus that he took credit for.

According to IMDB, he was brought in to touch up some of the banter between characters. I think he did the whole "Lippenzeiner stallions" bit.

I wish I could agree with you. But we're living in exceptional times when we have a preezy and a dem congress not only wanting to gut our economy, but to gut the only defense we have against the world's despots that are licking their chops at the thought of our demise. The same goes for Israel.

A couple weeks before the election, the Delco Times front page story was an FBI raid on Weldon's Thornbury house. That was six years ago. To date, no charges have been filed.

Now people on both the Left and Right have reasons to oppose Hagel. Why would any Senator have any incentive to vote for his confirmation?
And the "no exception" position has always been absurd, even years ago when Hagel had it. Reagan certainly never pushed that because he actually wanted to put together a winning coalition.

185 Excuse me while I veer wildly off topic:
What is with Gifford walking (limping) around with a big smile everywhere they are trying to ban guns? Before she was shot she was a 2nd amendment supporter.
It's like a replay of what happened with James Brady.
Brady was Reagan's press secretary...but after he got shot, he became a big toadie for the gun grabbers.

No, he starts with the premise, "How can I justify revenge?"
True Romance, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Inglorious, Django. All revenge fantasies. He is a one-note hack.

A particular opinion on abortion.
*sigh*
Yep, that's part of the qualifications for secretary of defense. Not a coherent foreign policy viewpoint that favors allies disfavors enemies (and looks askance on everyone) but the touchstone of modern politics.
Because hey - vagina.
