That was a joke I wrote.

But this was real:

Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff: “I can’t answer that, what we’re seeking.”

The YOLO Doctrine in full effect.

We have a problem. The president proposes attacking Syria, and his top military officer cannot tell you the objective. Does the commander in chief know his own objective? Why, yes. “A shot across the bow,” explained Barack Obama.

Now, a shot across the bow is a warning. Its purpose is to say: Cease and desist, or the next shot will sink you. But Obama has already told the world — and Bashar al-Assad in particular — that there will be no next shot. He has insisted time and again that the operation will be finite and highly limited. Take the shot, kill some fish, go home.

What then is the purpose?

What's the purpose of Poppin' Molly? Some things we just do for the experience of them and because it's expected of us, like drinking way more than we want to drink on New Years Eve because if we're not vomiting in a lobby ficus then we're just Not Living Life to the Full.

I keep saying this: I sort of would like to bomb Assad. I sort of do want some one to give a good reason to bomb Assad, because in the Lizard Brain that all conservatives have (and apparently Qui Es Mucho Macho? Barack Obama has quite the Lizard Brain on him too) I do want to blow this guy up.

But no one's giving me that reason. It seriously is just YOLO.

Let's just see what happens.

Maybe it's because it sounds so... dishonest. An honest answer would either be a) our objective or b) "I do not have the answer to that." This "I can't..." crap suggests that he knows the answer but won't divulge it. Which does not mean he actually knows the answer- I think he was getting as close to "F*ck if I know" as his political instincts would let him get, but the answer itself just doesn't sit well with me.

Yep, Dempsey is constitutionally challenged at best.  His statements/actions in both the Florida Koran burning and the LAPD case were, well, unprecedented for a JCS Chmn, far as I know.  In the worst way.

 

He was a friendly sort when he ran MNSTCI and our workout times coincided at the palace gym, but when was appointed Chmn I figured the worst must be true, as you can only imagine what things would catch the eye of this current ridiculous government in order to get you promoted all the way.

What he said was an off the cuff aside about how major powers like the three of us just wouldn't directly engage in war because it's too costly to everyone involved, but given the way he named them specifically, and the whole Q and A was about Syria, the implicit call out was pretty obvious.

468 They're not very good with cannons.  For the naval battle splinters episode they used a cannon that was wrong,  the ball was too small,  the charge too weak,  the wrong type of wood and the wrong thickness.  Other than that,  they were spot on.

More importantly, he isn't going to be one of Obama's targets. If I had to guess, primary targets would be air defenses, any chemical manufacturing our intel has pinpointed, runways and the like. Regime change is not a goal of his. In fact, he'll go out of the way to keep the level of harm to civilians and personnel low. Just the smart weapons we drop, and the logistics we use to get them there, are likely to cost more than What Syria would lose. He won't attack leadership targets, which is hilarious, since the threat of regime change is one of the few things a tyrant fears. Blowing up his people? Meh, they all secretly want to kill him anyway. Plato said it, tyrants are afraid of their own people, and as for the reason, well, Mussolini. Need I say more? Attack his military hardware? He'll use it to stoke rage against the US. The will of the people is well worth the loss of a few SAMs. Attack his chemical plants.. Well, as we all know, all chemical plants everywhere in the world primarily make infant formula. Also medication. Usually for childhood illnesses. It doesn't matter if we don't believe it. If his people do, it will harden them for war, in a backed into a corner sort of a way. They're trying to wipe us out has always been a strong motivator for action. The other reason to attack is to protect Obama's image and ego. I don't think the image of the nation as a whole will be damaged. Obama might perhaps lose a little ground internationally, but I don't think he has anyone's respect in that arena in the first place. Resetting Russian relations? What, to 1972? England? No longer has our back. Europe doesn't really take us seriously, Israel doesn't trust us, Africa likes Bush better, our relationship with Iran is no better than it was the day Bush left office. In so much as our image rests on the President's foreign policy, the damage is done. In so much as it rests in the faith of people in Americans as a whole and our ability to act through our chosen representation, I think if congress stopped the president from a war of aggression (as we haven't been attacked) it would help our image with most parties. The reason not to attack is that it gives Syria's various allies a good reason to take pot shots at our assets, our ships, our planes, things which are US flagged but not military. Such a broad array of targets that we can't possibly protect them all. Did Iran ever get that submarine? I know Russia has a few. It doesn't matter if the technology is 40 years out of date. Explosives are effective and countermeasures are not 100% precise. Also, while it doesn't encourage terrorism (as though it needed encouraging), it does encourage certain parties to give terrorists safe harbor. It helps a lot to have a base if you're going to do some damage. Management.. leaders.. whatever they think of the foot soldiers, don't like being blown up when it is avoidable. Really, they'd rather avoid it when it isn't avoidable. No suicide vests for them. It wasn't very long ago some foreign born chemistry majors were caught near some water works at midnight. Boston? I don't remember. Wasn't it stopped mainly though dumb luck? We can survive any sort of assault, but we don't want to have to do so. Success will mean some needless illness or deaths. An air-only attack is not going to keep us fighting them away from this nation, because they can not respond in the air. To attack back, they must fight us on the ground or at sea. Not that that means we should engage in another land war, which is expensive, but that we should be very careful when we consider if we should involve ourselves at all. Not that that harboring terrorists has historically worked out for Iraq, and Afghanistan, but the assumption that Obama is Mr. Proportionate response is well founded, he argued against Iraq and Afghanistan for reasons which would make them pretty comfortable that he isn't going to launch into WW3, or to send in a ground attack into a 2nd nation when occupied with Syria. Which consequently is precisely how you'd end up launching into WW3. Well, It isn't as though there are no arguments for an attack. It's just that those arguments pale compared to arguments to attack Mexico. Which isn't going to happen. I say they press their case to the UN, and try to get action. When that fails- and it will, use it as an excuse to stop funding the UN. Use the building for military training. Leave it's desiccated ruin as a warning against an creating another organization to prevent a few certain terrible acts, which instead works to set itself up as a world government, expressly ignoring it's sole real duty.
