BBC Announces 12th Doctor: YOU
— Ace

No it's actually Peter Capaldi.

I have no idea who that is.

Capaldi wearing some sinister facial hair for his role as
Cardinal Richelieu in a BBC Three Musketeers project

Eh, he's got a Doctor sort of look.

Interview: The Right Scoop jut cut the video of the announcement, the unveiling, and the interview with the next Doctor.

His Work: This is funny. Profanity warning.

The fact that he's got quite an interesting, handsome face and LOOKS like a Doctor is just gravy. Heh. Of the magnificent fur coat. Love! According to IMDB, season 4 was still William Hartnell, at least as of the first episode ("The Smugglers," aired September 1, 1966). So it's very possible that it was the season in which Troughton took over. A Doctor Who twofer! Or, more appropriately, a Whofer!

49 A young, female Dr. Who would be fun.
It would play to a lot of stereotypes. You could get a lot of scripts out of a female character who is dismissed because of gender and age who has the solution to the problem de jour, gets ignored, ends the crisis, to the amazement of her self proclaimed  (older male)  superiors, exits with some understated wisecrack.

53 Capaldi played Valmont's (John Malkovich's) manservant in Dangerous Liaisons. It was a small part but he was great. Valmont had ordered him seduce a maid so Valmont could blackmail her into spying on the Marquise. Capaldi started sleeping with her, as ordered, but was bored with it and wanted to stop. He's a good actor if he can hang with Malkovich.

60 MWR I can imagine a female Doctor Who.  Hands rapidly running across body and noting how ill fitting the clothes are.  And suddenly stopping on the chest and having to chide 'no no no must not do that or never...'  pause at that and the high pitch of voice.  Eyes widen in shock as one hand reaches for crown of head to pull down a very long strand of hair then a quick look down where other hand is.  Look back up at camera as eyes go really wide and a piercing scream is heard.

National Security Adviser Susan Rice chaired a meeting with 12 administration officials including the secretaries of State, Defense and Homeland Security and the directors of the FBI, CIA and NSA, according to a White House statement. Rice and Lisa Monaco, the assistant to the president for homeland security and counterterrorism, then briefed President Obama on the latest developments... Craig Ferguson said it best (and shortest), the show represents the triumph of intellect and romance over brute force and cynicism.

Here's what the Doctor Who wiki says: Little is known about Turlough's life on Trion before and during the civil war, although his desperation to destroy a distress beacon he recognised as being from Trion and his reluctance to contact his people to save the inhabitants of Sarn indicate there were severe penalties for defiance of his exile. Before the war, Turlough's family was wealthy, and owned a planet. It can be assumed he was an active member of the military; he held the rank and serial number of "Junior Ensign Commander Vislor Turlough, VTEC9/12/44". In his teenage years, before he became a member of the military, in love with Deela. Deela's father was on the opposite side during the civil war. His mother was killed during the civil war and his younger brother Malkon and his father were exiled to the abandoned colony planet of Sarn. Turlough himself was exiled to Earth.

Then I didn't have BBC America and couldn't watch it. *pout* Now I've got BBC America but haven't watched it still, b/c I'm a bad fan.

179 I was hoping that James May would be the 12th Doctor Posted by: kbdabear at August 04, 2013 04:09 PM (/9IC1) I'm wondering what they'll do when it's time for this Doctor to leave. According to canon a Galifreyan only has 12 regenerations, meaning this is the last one. They may have solved that already somewhere in either the literature or the new series, but if so I don't know what the solution is.

180 Honestly, I feel that Gary Oldman would have made the perfect Doctor. Hugh Grant also would have been decent.

183 The heel is a bit thin I admit.  Might twist an ankle.

I don't think they have revoked the 12 limit but I could be wrong.  Which means Moffet has gotten into an interesting corner.

Well Eccleston took in the time vortex or whatever from Rose.  They could argue how that event change his regenerations.  Then there was River Song giving up all of her regenerations to save The Doctor as well.  And remember, Jonathan Hurt is also now established as a regeneration as well somewhere along the way, he just wasn't called The Doctor.  So this would be the 12th doctor but technically the 13th individual.

189 TPH, you referring to when we went zipping through all of the Doctor's incarnations and we meet John Hurd as the 11th Doctor is talking very grimly about that incarnation. Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at August 04, 2013 04:16 PM (0WdQr) Nope. During the 4th Doctor episode "The Brain of Morbius" the Doctor and Morbius get into a mind-bending contest. As the doctor starts to loose there are flashbacks to the Doctor's previous regenerations. There are 8 "Pre-Doctors" shown. They in canon excuse is that those were Morbius' previous lives, though the regressions only happened when the time lord is loosing, and it was the doctor who was loosing. From this is the fan theory that harnell's doctor has lost his past memories and was the first "Doctor." As the show progressed, the Doctor regains memories, or finds out about, his past regenerations. This is why during the 7th Doctor's run it is made clear that there is far more about the doctor that is secret then has been revealed; also the Doctor is caught referring to Rassalon and Omega as if they were contemporaries. As such, it is theorized that the Doctor was one of the three time-lords responsible for time-lord society along with Omega and Rassalon. 192 @97: "Craig Ferguson said it best (and shortest), the show represents the triumph of intellect and romance over brute force and cynicism." Once upon a time, Ferguson was in a punk rock band with Capaldi, way back in Glasgow. I imagine they did more than a small handful of drugs together along the way. And, yeah, I'd hoped they'd pick John Noble, but they were never gonna let an Aussie steal the role. *shrugs*

194 Alot of win in this thread. I think he looks fantastic (and he said "fantastic" which was Eccleston's catch phrase as an older doctor). Tennant was amazing and Smith has been excellent. Im glad hes a bit older. The stories may be lacking sometimes but the Doctor actors have been spot on. Thank god they didnt go with something "edgy" like Lesbian doctor or black doctor. Not racist or sexist but the Doctor is a white Brit/Scot/Irish. Trying to screw w the formula would be disastrous and thank god Moffit didn't buy in to the begging for a transgender Doctor.

I only read about half the comments. But Colin Baker had a bit part during the fifth Doctor's run

Posted by: Methos at August 04, 2013 03:55 PM (hO9ad)

199 Also, not that anyone's going to read this, but John Hurt's Doctor almost certainly referred to himself as The Doctor. In The End of Time, the other timelords referred (presumably) to him as The Doctor.

I think the not in the name of the Doctor is Matt Smith's Doctor throwing a hissy fit over what the elder did his desire not to associate himself with it. Perhaps the Doctor as a whole has this attitude, but the other two both acknowledge the deed.

Unless there's more to it than we know.

Baker was the best.  I did like Davidson, though.  He made an excellent Campion a few years later.  That was one of the rare times when the TV adaptation seemed better than the book.

201 The 50th anniversary show will feature both David Tennant and Matt Smith, though it's not clear (yet) if the two doctors will come face to face. I had always believed that if two Doctors ever crossed paths, the space-time continuum would explode. Companions Rose and Clara DO meet for some hot girl-on-girl action.Or so I choose to believe. I spent much of today cleaning and mending my own TARDIS, which is camping with friends and me at the Philadelphia Folk Festival in ten days.

The first Doctor doesn't actually count as a regeneration, so there would be 13 Doctors in all, with one to go.

But I would like to see that, since the Valeyard is supposed to come from somewhere around the 12th and 13th Doctors.
