Terrible storms raging across the Midwest this afternoon and into the evening. Several tornadoes have developed as four states, IA, KS, OK, and WI are under alert.

To our fellow morons in the path, hunker down, stay safe, and we'll keep you in our prayers.

For those so inclined, updates and photos posted here.

11 Stay safe out there everyone.  Not only because of the tornadoes, but what can sometimes follow such disasters.  Like the media jackals showing up five minutes after the all clear sounds.

And a special prayer of protection for all those who think storm chasing is an interesting tourist thing to do.

I wanna return to an earlier topic:

hey, off topic, but I want to mention this about the previous thread:

you had Dan Pfeiffer (on ABC) saying "I can't speak to the law here. The law is irrelevant. The activity was outrageous and inexcusable, and it was stopped and it needs to be fixed so we ensure it never happens again."

Gateway Pundit has Pfeiffer on CBS (Face the Nation) saying...

"You're right. It's an absolute tragedy what happened. The question
isn't "Who edited what talking points". That's largely irrelevant."

and now I notice Nat Review online has this:

Senior Obama advisor Dan Pfeiffer tried to deflect Fox News Sunday’s Chris Wallace’s questions about the president’s whereabouts and involvement in the decisions on the night of the 9/11 attacks in Benghazi. He went on to call the suggestion of the questions to be “offensive.”

Wallace asked who President Obama met with and where throughout the day of the attack, and positing if it could have been in the Situation Room. “I don’t remember what room the president was in on the night, and that is a largely irrelevant fact,” Pfeiffer said.

so what shall we call it? Irrelevantocracy?

My father used to chase tornadoes for the news in Texas back in the early 60s.

Tornadoes are so scary to me, because even as good as predictions and early warnings have gotten, they still strike seemingly randomly, leaving one house standing and the next one trashed. And, sometimes, they still do strike with absolutely no warning.

Dan Pfeiffer (on ABC) saying "I can't speak to the law here. The law is irrelevant.

To put this in a different perspective, a little anecdote:

It seems that   the zookeepers at two neighboring zoos were having a dispute over ownership of a new baby elephant.  The sire was from one of the zoos and the mother was from the other zoo.  They took the case to court and the judge ruled in favor of the zoo of the mama  pachyderm.  The two zookeepers met on the courthouse steps, shook hands, and the losing party graciously said,  "The law says it's your elephant."

49 Remember one time at Eglin AFB.  We were setting up camp in field conditions.  It was just a typical hot muggy summer day.  Where we were setting up, there was some old slit trenches from previous exercises.  As we were working, one of the NCOs called out a tornado.  We turned to look where he was pointing.  Sure enough there was a funnel cloud moving across the horizon.

So we called the CP to warn them of the tornado.  So next minute the PA system is telling everyone to gather at the Rec Tent.  Mind you the Rec Tent was literally a tent.  We all looked at each other and then looked at the tent, looked at each other again and looked at the slit trenches.  We piled into the slit trenches.

Luckily the tornado completely missed us and the all clear was soon sounded.

82 From the previous thread: Imagine the first rape or act of sexual assault/harassment caused by the boys in the girls locker room... "trans-gendered" is more equal than biological female in the left's anti-Kyriarchical heirarchy. You have to remember that the left considers biological sex and gender to be two different things. For them, biological sex is only about who has what parts, and nothing to do with how a person acts, thinks, &c. They consider "gender" to be a "social construct" which must be abolished... unless it is contra-normative, in which case it must be celebrated. More insanity about all that here: http://politicalhat.com/tag/gender/

107 Was at the lake watching the line of storms come at me. They started getting close so I pulled in one catfish pole. Put most of my gear in the truck. Grabbed a two jigs under a Bobbers pole and started casting. Caught a little saugeye right off. Then a white bass. Then two white bass (one on each jig. Then another white bass. Next cast nothing. Okay it's pretty close now. One more cast. Oops. See the rain hitting the lake about 300 yards away, and here comes the wind. Reel it in fast. Grab other catfish pole and start reeling. Big pole. 3 oz sinker and way out there. Too late. The next three minutes I felt like the priest in caddy shack on the golf course. But there's a venison roast in the oven and I've got a couple more good eatin' size channel cats to fillet.

They fit right in, they thought, and were taking a smoke break from prayers when one sez: "I wonder if we should ask the Abbot if it would be ok to smoke while we prayed." "Go fer it, the 2nd one sez. The Abbot told the 1st: "No. Never. Nope. No how. Prayer is only for prayer. You should never bring anything else into it." 1st monk reports, lights another cig. 2nd monk stubs his out, sez, "Lemme try it this one time". 2nd monk: "Abbot, my friend and I really like the Spirit here. We were wondering if it would be OK to pray while we smoke?" Abbot: "Yes! Absolutely! Whatever you're doing, you should also be praying!"

I guess it's kind of good that I don't like cake donuts much, because I could *get* a substitute for that. That does just kind of look like a fancy cruller. Crullers have lighter, airy texture not too different from a croissant.

209 nothing is really wrong with it, other than it's the crappy standard stove you get when you build. It's 7 years old. Yes, I'd like a new one, no I don't think now's the time to shell out $800 (after tax) for one. Posted by: BCochran1981 - Credible Hulk at May 19, 2013 08:36 PM (GEICT) Throw in 'And in a year or so we could get a better one than the one you are looking at for the same price' and you'd sell me. Double ovens have dropped in price a great deal in the past few years, as have convection. Just like TV technology, as years pass, the fancy stuff gets cheaper. Set up a side account (jar) for saving towards the oven. Regrettably the old style solid metal, enameled, gas one on my wish list will never drop to a price I can afford.

211 If you're near the bad weather, my advice is to leave nothing to chance. If you think you might need to take shelter, you need to take shelter. I watched a tornado bounce over our house in Alabama when I was a kid. That house, where my parents still lived, was destroyed by the tornadoes that came through a couple of years ago. The house was on seven acres of land. My dad drives 45 minutes to mow it every week. We all grew up there, and I think he just can't stand the thought of selling it.

213 BCochran: My gas range is original, from 1957 when my house was built. It has pilot lights, so when I lost power for three days after Hurricane Sandy, it still worked and I was able to heat up the leftovers that were thawing in the freezer. I never even had to dip into my SHTF stockpile. Sometimes the old stuff is best.

I don't think he is gonna go Capt Queeg.  Everything is as he wants it.  IRS targeting enemies, check.  Denial of terrorism, check.  Reminding the press to be compliant, check.  If people complain, deny everything.

I just want to know who was advising him the night of Benghazi that he does not want to get out, where was he, what was he doing?  Getting advice from Rashid Khaledi again?  Or Huma, whose family is big wigs in Egypt (where there was a protest over a video)?  Or just sleeping.  I don't think it was sleeping anymore. They are trying too hard to get people off the subject of who he talked to that night, cause it sure as fuck was not his staff.

Today's toadie said the JEF was advised throughout the night by his National Security Counsel.  That's Hillary, Biden, Panetta, Dempsey, Clapper, Petraeus, and Brennan and who ever else the JEF wanted to talk to.

IIRC, Hillary, Panetta, Dempsey and Petraeus already said the JEF was briefed at 4pm and then never asked again that night, and they never spoke to him again that night.  So who was advising him?  If it was Clapper and Brennan they would just say Clapper and Brennan.  I do not think it was Brennan.  The day after Susan Rice's Sunday talk show rounds, Brennan briefed Graham and McCain and told them a video had nothing to do with it.  Does not look like the story originated with him.

Who was advising him that they do not want us to know about?

Wife and I were watching CNN during a storm in Kansas a few years back. It passed through Wichita and CNN started acting like this was the cutest little small town.  They even said "If you don't have a basement run across the street to Grandma's house!"

They had someone there (must have been in KC and drove quickly to the site) who was quite clearly in the outskirts of Wichita which made it look like it was a town with a big Hotel in the Middle of nowhere.

This for a town whose metro area is around 600k people (not exactly huge, but this isn't the middle of nowhere for Pete's sake.)

293 BCochran1981,  you might look for a local auction house which gets rid of builders models,  overstocks,  estates,  distress sales from divorces,  etc.

I attend one such small auction house here in central Indiana.  I often see almost brand-new appliances sold for a fraction of their retail cost.

I have to put in a word for gas,  however.   Mine has electric ignition but if I lose power I can light it with a match.  Pretty handy during ice storms as such.

O/T what the fuckis a Rec Tent?

Way back when....we called it the 'beer tent'. If we were lucky enough to find ourselves sited near it, for a couple bucks, we could have a pretty good night, (as long as we remembered to buy a couple beers for Top...otherwise that bastard would cut a guy off after just two beers). The trick was to order a round of beers for 'your guys', by first offering to buy a beer for your 1st Sgt...once he gave his nod, you just kind of sort of added about a dozen more to the order.

The real fun started when you tried to drive back to your rig, by blackout lights....while excoriating your guys not to drink all the damned beer.

But they encouraged the crew media to go around scoffing at me, spreading wild rumors about me. I was to blame for Lieutenant Maryk's Jay Carney's incompetence and poor seamanship spokesmanship. Ah, but the strawberries Libyan consulate! That's where I had them. They tried to laugh at me, and made jokes, but I proved beyond a shadow of doubt, with geometric logic, that a duplicate key to the wardroom icebox islamophobic video DID exist! I'd have produced that key video if they hadn't pulled the Caine ambassador out of action. I know now that they were only trying to protect some fellow officers diplomates.

“As Morehouse men, many of you know what it’s like to be an outsider, to be marginalized, to feel the sting of discrimination. That’s an experience that a lot of Americans share,” Obama said.

Hispanic Americans, Obama lamented, are told to “go back” home while strangers pass judgment on the parenting skills of gay men and lesbians or stare at Muslim Americans with suspicion.

Very odd...almost a straight south wind, which is unusual for us. The lightning is an awesome sight out here right now.

452 438 What is/was going on with deety? Posted by: DC in Towson at May 19, 2013 09:55 PM (jIaZt) Very scary message late at night that appears to have just been a sad drunken rant about life sucking. Sorry to hear that. Didn't mean to make light of a possibly serious situation. Just me being me. Posted by: Seamus Muldoon at May 19, 2013 09:56 PM (pxDth) Eh, it's what we do. And I won't bore y'all with the details, just I have to do all the damn heavy lifting for doctors for over three damned years and I'm sick of it. Assholes.

454 Alright, about the clean underwear thing..... Let's be honest. In any kind of emergency situation the general rule is first you say it (shit), and then you do it (shit). They will not be clean underwear anymore when the ER nurses are cutting your clothes off. I know this from experience.

458 TR-- Thanks. The last Kenmore (before the current crop) I bought in 1983. It worked until 2008. 25 years. This last one (brand escapes me), I did buy at Lowes, last year..., but it was only about $140.

472 Name another scandal where the executive branch targeted thousands of Americans!

Probably Wilson. Palmer raids. Sixteen THOUSAND arrested. And then there were the hundreds killed in the 1919 "red scare" riots.

Jonah Goldberg claims, "[m]ore dissidents were arrested or jailed in a few years under Wilson than under Mussolini during the entire 1920s" - I believe him.

But it wasn't a scandal, because most of the US political class supported Wilson.

Maybe that's where Pfeiffer is coming from when he says the IRS mess isn't a "real scandal".

473 First time I moved somewhere where houses didn't have basements it freaked me out. Not that I was ever afraid of tornadoes because, you know, you can hear them coming and you have a BASEMENT. I know it doesn't always work but I sure pray that everyone in Shawnee got hunkered down.

474 ...my doctors apparently just "accidentally" tried to kill me. Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith *** In 2001 I went in for a Colonoscopy and got a perforated bowel. Infected with MRSA. Five months, five operations, died on the table once, Vancomycin IV for weeks. Ruined my heart, liver and kidneys but through serious supplementation regimens restricted diet and the faith and love of good Homeopaths I am nearly recovered. Oh yes, I avoid doctors.

An LCD screen can't blur something my moving it farther away, it just scrambles pixels.

480 True story. When I first moved to MD from MN in the late 80's, there was an ice cream truck that used to circle my sub par apartment complex after 10pm..... In January! The clientele was decidedly 'inner city' and I am pretty sure they weren't buying ice cream. Call the cops repeatedly and they seemed to be at a loss as to what to do. I can still hear that song in my head.

Posted by: Truck Monkey at May 19, 2013 09:32 PM (jucos)

The city where I used to be a police officer had an ordinance requiring ice cream trucks get a special "ice cream vendor license."  The license cost only $5.00 but it helped keep the more disreputable trucks out of town.  It also gave me a reason to check on who was having contact with the kids:  one time, the dude selling ice cream was drinking a beer.
