Beer -- the new construction material
— Purple Avenger

Actually, the grain waste from making beer

...A by-product of the process could be about to give an upgrade to a workhorse building material – red clay bricks. By blending in the grains left over from making beer, the bricks can be more environmentally friendly and better insulators...

...With a clay paste containing 5 per cent spent grains, the team was able to create bricks just as strong as the conventional type, while reducing the amount of heat they lost by 28 per cent...

8 May be a stoopid question but I will ask anyway, if these bricks get hot over the course of a day in the sun, will your house smell like beer?

9 Spent grain is already used as cattle feed, do we sacrifice marbled steak for metrosexual warmy bricks?

HELLS NO.

10 Dangit! The link won't open for me. But, I take it the gist is.... drink more beer. There are houses that need to be built! As lovely as this fresh thread as this is, it is, unfortunately, bound to be NFL-stomped momentarily.

I've mostly heard of breweries sending the used mash to dairy farms, but cheese pairs so well with beer I'm seconding the HELLS NO.

Sprecher.

Those cheeseheads know how to make a proper Root Beer.

20 Even the generic store-brand root beer is usually pretty good. It's probably closer to the original flavoring. The original Dr. Pepper factory is in the little town of Dublin, Texas. There you can get a case of the original formula Dr. Pepper. It's got that '50's taste that will stay with you for an hour after you drink it. It's the only Dr. Pepper I care for at all.

Nice thing about living in PA....lots of boutique cheeses. Cooper's Cheese, and extra extra sharp cheddar are my personal faves.

(and yes, extra extra)

36 Well you wingnuts are supposed to become vegetarian to save the planet anyway  /sarc.   This is like the compostable  dishes made from corn starch and stuff,  my first thought is "meat is expensive enough already, stop using feed to make stuff "

37 This will drive certain California enviro weenies crazy as bricks can't really be used in seismic areas. Maybe as pavers? Anyway, solution to non-existent problem?

38 Make bricks out of metrosexuals. A win for all!

Posted by: OG Celtic American at December 01, 2013 09:32 AM (vHRtU)

39 If you're using bricks for insulation, you're doing it wrong. Fiberglass insulates about twenty times better. So, how much extra would you pay for a special Green-Sticker brick that sucks a tiny bit less? No need to answer, Sacramento will send you the bill.

Posted by: t-bird at December 01, 2013 09:34 AM (FcR7P)

40 Posted by: HeatherRadish™ at December 01, 2013 12:52 PM (hO8IJ) A place like AB can't possibly sell all of it's grain, so I'd imagine this would be a secondary market for it.

Posted by: tsrblke, PhD(c) No Really! at December 01, 2013 09:45 AM (GaqMa)

41 Pretty old process to add a organic filler that burns out during the firing of the brink to make the bricks more insulating. Traditionally sawdust is used, so I do not see the use of bear making waste being that much better, but perhaps the size and shape of the grains results in a stronger brick.

Anyway, solution to non-existent problem?

Non existent? No way....the earth is running out of dirt to make bricks with! Couple that with globull worming, and what do you get? A fantastic movie idea, that's what.

Same thought occurred to me. The spent mash is not "waste" as in "presenting problem to dispose of".

And if you incorporate edible stuff into bricks, how long before insects or bacteria find a way to eat the stuff? Brick-gobbling termites, woo-hoo!

47 Beer as building materials? Meh. During the Angolan Civil War, canned beer was used as currency. Diplomats and Western NGO workers were given cases of beer to pay the locals for their services.
