Benghazi Hearings Have Begun
— Ace

Below, a couple of streaming links. I think this is YouTube's first live-streamed committee hearing

It's also on CSPAN, and live-streamed at this link.

Added: Below, "The Hillary Shuffle," aka "What Difference Does It Make?," created by @mamaswati, via @ameliahammy.

Opening Statements: Issa called for Cummings to join him in getting to the truth. Cummings claimed he welcomed and supported the whistelblowers, and had written a letter to SecState Kerry asking that they be free of reprisal. That letter was sent yesterday. People have been trying to get these people protection for months.

After noting how much he loved whistlebowers, he basically said they were full of shit because Obama's people said they were.

One bit of possible news: He claims the "signature" on the order to draw down security was not Hillary Clinton's signature at all, but some kind of mechanically-added recitation of her name.

We'll see how that claim stands up.

Thompson: Per @laurawkwalker, "WH told me the FEST was taken off the table. I asked why. WH said "not the right time for them to go in".

FEST is an acronym for "Foreign Emergency Support Team." It's a group tasked with rapid response to terrorism against US interests abroad.

Cummings to Hicks: "Death is Part of Life." Waxing philosophical about the inevitability of death -- "What difference does it possibly make?," redux -- he tells Hicks he "feels his pain."

For his part, Hicks had testified that the hospital to which Stevens was brought was under Ansar al-Islam's control.

8 But what difference does it make? Little at this point. The regime and their State-run media kept this out of the news and away from the low-info voters long enough to get the JEF safely re-elected. The dead will still be dead and the Commie in Chief will serve his second term, and we're left, as always, scrabbling for scraps.

12 Fourth Benghazi witness gagged by red tape 10:08 AM 05/08/2013 Obama administration officials are finally letting the attorney for a Benghazi whistle-blower get a security clearance — but the clearance is at such a low level that it will probably slow the congressional probe of how the administration handled last year’s terrorist attack on the embassy in Benghazi, Libya. Victoria Toensing represents an unnamed government official who can help explain the reaction of top government officials to the jihadi attack on the U.S diplomatic site in Benghazi and killed four Americans last Sept. 11. The official may also be able to explain if officials rewrote intelligence reports and took other actions to minimize media coverage of the administration’s errors and the perceived role of Al Qaeda jihadis. http://dailycaller.com/2013/05/08/fourth-benghazi-witness-gagged-by-red-tape/#ixzz2SiTCWqBm

17 Well I'm sure the media will go with wall-to-wall coverage and analysis of these hearings, just like they did with the Watergate hearings back in the '70s.  Even more so- after all, nobody died at Watergate.  So they'll be all over this story like a cheap suit and they'll follow it wherever it leads- right up to the President himself if that's where it goes.  After all I'm sure the media is just chock-full of anxious young reporters just chomping on the bit to be this century's Woodward and Bernstein.

Right?

Who the f*ck am I kidding?

That creaking sound you hear is the cast iron cover of the Memory Hole being pulled open...

20 Issa began by not grandstanding,  but solemnly reading the victims/ names.  Says relatives are in the audieince,  and they deserve the answers they were promised.

Also detailed how Pickering and Mullen refused to meet with them or testify, and also detailed numerous examples of how the  administration is refusing to cooperate, either refusing or ignoring requests.  (Did this with details and dates.)

Now Elijah Cummings is up and is not sounding political and welcomes the whistleblowers.  This of course may be a ruse.

91 Thompson up first. I expect his testimony to be the most damning. Highest in command for that was CONUS at the time for the State Department's counter terrorism response. The head was traveling back from Egypt IIRC--that "head" has already been used to counter Thompson even though he was traveling and not stateside at the time.

92 Issa should have filed charges of perjury in both cases and turned it over to an independent counsel. Posted by: Vic at May 08, 2013 11:54 AM (53z96) But that presupposes that hearings took place. As I understand your position, the hearings are, in and of themselves, a waste and there is no point in holding the hearings. If there are no hearings, then there is no testimony. If there is no testimony, then there is nothing to submit. Many people, not just you, have expressed a great deal of justifiable skepticism in the hearing process. What then is the alternative?

I have long said that it should not be congress's job to hold hearings to investigate a crime. That should be done behind closed doors to determine if it is likely a crime has taken place.  Once that has been determined congress turns it over to an independent counsel if it involves the executive branch.

IOW, congress acts as a grand jury under a secret process.  Not getting face time in front of TV cameras.

None of that will ever happen.

Well I'm sure the media will go with wall-to-wall coverage and analysis of these hearings, just like they did with the Watergate hearings back in the '70s. I would only take it seriously in a "from now on" sort of way.  I've always been a little dubious of such things- how do you verify the person signing is who you think they are?  Who else, for instance, has access to Hillary's auto-pen?

That said- if they're accepted as legitimate, then they're accepted as legitimate, and you would have to go to some lengths to prove that the "signature" in question was either not authentic or otherwise not authorized.

163 To bring a little joy amidst all the depressing and discouraging coverage of Benghazi, there are still some brave Britons in England.  Alf, 60 years of age and second in command of the Earl of Northampton's Regiment of Foote, was just going to get a paper when he heard someone yell for the clerk to open the till.  Alf tried the reasonable approach first saying we can open the till no problem.  Well the attacker decided to attack Alf.  Alf, using the skills he learned as a Cavalier, quickly disarmed the thug.  Not admitting defeat the thug pulled another knife.  And Alf disarmed him again and held him while the clerk called the Bobbies.  For his heroic actions, Alf has been awarded the Police Public Bravery Award.  In hindsight Alf thinks he was a right lucky fool but is modest and thinks the truly brave are the lads and lasses serving in the military.

Well Alf, I think you are a true hero.

168 81 "Issa should have filed charges of perjury in both cases and turned it over to an independent counsel." 1. Neither Issa nor Congress has the authority to 'file charges of perjury'. Congress can vote to act on contempt OR ELSE refer a matter of suspected criminality, such as perjured testimony, to the US DoJ for consideration for prosecution. 2. There is no such animal as "independent counsel"; the Republican-dominated Congress and a Republican president eliminated the independent counsel law over a decade ago. The Scooter Libby prosecution, for example, was NOT a case of prosecution by "independent counsel". Rather, it was a specifically referred assignment by the Deputy AG where the AG himself determined he was incapacitated by conflict of interest, pursuant to which the assigned prosecutor remained answerable to the AG. As it happened, not one of the AGs under President GW Bush chose to intervene to stop the assigned prosecutor from pursuing a Grand Jury investigation, from seeking and obtaining an indictment, or from prosecuting Libby under that indictment -- but at no time was it ever an "independent counsel" process.

Thompson: Per @laurawkwalker, "WH told me the FEST was taken off the table. I asked why. WH said "not the right time for them to go in".

You know... some months ago some guy with a blog took a look at a document dump, and came to the conclusion that a) the resources were available and b) only the White House (that is: the president) could have told them not to go in.

He followed up by labeling the President a traitor for giving "aid and comfort to the enemy" by specifically preventing reinforcements from saving our people *and then blaming a completely unrelated YouTube video.*

In order of likelihood:

1. They'll forgo tough questions in favor of bloviating in front of the cameras, expressing their outrage, etc.

2. They'll allow outrageous comments, and answers to stand in order to revisit #1.

3. The squishies will try to tone everything down...refer to democrats as their 'friends on the other side of the aisle', in order to appear 'reasonable' for the cameras. See #1.

4. The dems will be allowed to derail questioning in order to run this train off the rails to talk about Bush. Abortion. Evil guns. Etc. The stupid party will allow this to happen, since they'll be focused on silently rehearsing their lines for when it's their turn to address the cameras. See #1.

Shocking, right?

The Democrats painted themselves into a corner months ago on this.  They could (should) have come out Fast and Furious against the President, and demanded answers then.  At least, they could/should have let the Republicans do so without trying to counter them particularly.  Instead, they actively took the Administration's side- a side which was transparantly the wrong one from the beginning.

If this gets any legs (and that's a big if), this is the kind of thing that not only brings down an Administration, but gives control of government to the other party for a generation.

Re the auto-pen bullshit, here's a newsflash Hillary: whether you physically signed a document or not, you're responsible for everything in it. It's like a hanko (essentially a rubber stamp) in Japan; you give someone your hanko, they now speak for you, and you are bound by whatever they do with it.

Otherwise, there's no point in having an auto-pen (or a hanko). Why bother to sign a document at all if that signature carries no force?

They filed contempt of congress FOR perjury and followed the procedure which called for it to be turned over to the Washington District Court.  She was tried and convicted.

I guess you could say it is the DOJ because the court does fall under the DOJ, but it did not go through any in the executive branch.  It goes strait to the court which is required to empanel a grand jury.

Listening to Hicks at the Benghazi hearing. I know he is trying to be thoughtful and thorough in his testimony but it is coming off as confusing and hampered. Whatever emotionality he is trying to convey is not coming through. A simple statement like "I believe the Sec State is complicit in the deaths of four Americans" would force the media to cover/refute that claim. If that is what he believes. He throwing names around like an oscar award speech. Who the hell is "Jackie!" Too much info, chap! Get to the meat! Brief, quick. This guy is called the ambassadors bulldog. Be nice if he was bulldogging now.

For what it is worth on the 'mechanical recitation of Hillary's name', in 2005 I worked for a... (secret squirrel stuff! No, really, I just don't want to give out details of my life to asshole strangers)... high ranking government official (close enough), and we had an autopen for his signature. Its just a sort of drafting table with a robotic arm that 'remembers' how the... guy... signed his name. Push the button and 'whoosh!' somewhat instant signature, no matter where the guy was.

The local chief of staff generally made the call when to autopen something, but there wasn't any real security on the damn thing. I don't recall any logs that needed filling out, any sort of tracking on how often it was used, or even if it was possible to track how often it was used.

This is, so far as I know, an accepted practice in every office of the Government.   Trying to make it into an excuse is amateur hour bullshit. Of course they also can't seem to grasp the simple concept that the boss is responsible, period, so there is that.

I imagine that, once the country collapses that a million voices, all in DC, will cry out asking 'why didn't someone DO something?!!!'.

Of course not. But he will. And here is my prediction:

I have not seen any evidence that satisfies me that there were assets available that could have responded in time to these attacks."

Posted by: ChristyBlinky, Radicalized Redneck Queen at May 08, 2013 09:51 AM (baL2B)

491 " I DO NOT BELIEVE IT WOULD TAKE TWO HOURS FOR A FIGHTER JET TO REACH THEM" ----#448 Yes it would have taken somewhere between 90m and 120m depending on how armed the f16's were and how much fuel they were willing to burn to get there asap (and still have some left do some fly-bys and to land either locally or ~400 miles away). An f16 not armed + drop tanks (flying gas can mode) only has a range of ~2500miles, significantly reduced once you start adding munition weight and burning fuel for speed. I criticize them not taking that risk and saying it would take 20 hours, I don't criticize the reality that Aviano is indeed ~1000 miles away and flight time would add a ~2 hour delay. We had 130's (much slower) in Sicily, that 400-450mile trip would take about a similar amount of time. #455 "Just so I know: it takes fighter jets two hours to go how many miles from Tripoli to Benghazi." -- It's 400-450 miles, but we didn't have and far as I know have never had fighters in Tripoli.

Watching the dem dim wits struggle to say anything coherent or honest is truly depressing.

Question:

If  Barack Obama was trapped in that annex on 9/11 do you think that military fighters by air/land/or sea would have been deployed?

Some lives are more equal than others.

505 So, they couldn't get military assets to the area in time? Who knew how long the Benghazi attack would last? It could have gone on for days.

506 "there was a Libyan C-130 in Tripoli" -- Yes there was, an that's still about the same flight time as it is from Sicily give or take a few minutes, they're about the same distance by air. Incirlik - ~900m a bit closer then Aviano (I know it's more of a logistics and recon base, not sure what 'fast' assets we have there if any anymore.) "Any fighters in Sigonella? " --- I don't know for a fact that on that night the anwser was no, but I know that none are based there regularly.

507 Speir......oh God make it stop

508 " Who knew how long the Benghazi attack would last?" --- Nobody really knew, it's what undercuts most of that "it was all over before we do anything" excuse.

509 Should have been called the "Foreign Intervention Support Team", FIST. A Secretary of Defense/State or president with balls would then be able to declare "drop the FIST". Just another example of the pussification of America.

510 Speir's a donk, so she will say something stupid. There she goes. Me me me! It's not about you and something that happened over 30 years ago.

513 " how come no one has ever discussed Navy assets in the region, only AF assets?" --- I'm not aware of any with aircraft in the ~1500'ish mile distance, perhaps one of the down sides of not having as many of those "expensive" aircraft carriers, as we used too.

515 Duckworth....best way to help memory of Ambassador and others is to move on...

516 Both Speier and Duckworth took a pass on cross-examination and/or personally attacking the witnesses.

What's that about?

517 It's all about the money, money, money They're all singing to Jessy J.
