I am a born and raised native Floridian, specifically from NE Florida where it's still pretty Southern, and from a family that is also native Floridian for generations. The dialect of Southern I speak is technically called Florida Cracker. And I am very well acquainted with Florida history, and not from the damn public schools but from my family who taught me. But its common usage in the South in particular is what I said it was. When someone calls me a cracker they don't mean I'm a braggart. It's a nasty term for white people and references the slave system. The worst thing is that they aren't wrong on the Florida history part. I was just pointing out that the term "cracker" is from Britain and technically refers to a braggart, and by extension to a Scots-Irishman (who tended to be pretty boastful as a culture - much like Black culture these days). False analogy there. For one thing we are discussing origins of the word, not its current meaning. The British don't even use the term anymore, to the best of my knowledge - it is a bit of 17th century (or earlier) slang that survived in the US long after it disappeared in region where it first originated. Kind of like "redneck," which originally meant a Scottish Covenanter (from the red scarves they wore), shifted to mean a Presbyterian or religious dissenter generally, then became a term for a rural white  with disparaging overtones (and occasionally now used as an ethnic slur).

 

Let me say it more bluntly: The notion that "cracker" came from anything to do with slavery is a lie intended to inflame racial hatred, and I'd appreciate it of people would stop repeating it.

Cities are usually hotbeds of idiocy regardless of what state they're in so the folks in the more immediate area may or may not be prepared for potential unrest.

A lot of folks carry here in Sanford.   Trademark was from Miami where the Crackers mostly transplanted older Yankees who do not carry.   Living in Sanford people tend to be polite,  even the pan handlers.   Sure there are drive by shootings and crime but assault tends to be very rare except for domestic battery.  

I work outside and when on the night shift one of he reasons we would tend not to do residential work was not because of our chance of being mugged but worries that a homeowner may mistake the utility guy in the back yard for a burglar and shoot us.   

In the Miami area utility workers don't like working at night because the chance of being mugged, they usually double people up (no working alone) and sometime on projects hire police protection.

Ehh,  Zimmerman is an ass for sure.  

Last week I saw 3 of the local "children" scoping out the neighbors house (who is older and in the hospital).  They rang the bell and when no one answered started peaking in the windows and walking around back.  At that point I called 911.    I had lost sight of them when they went around the back of the house, however I was not going to go looking for them as I carry and (had my 380 on my belt) and chances are if I came across them things would probably get out of hand.   I let the police handle it, (they got away) as I did not think it was worth putting myself in a position where the use of deadly for was required. 

Zimmerman was armed and Trademark was acting suspiscious,  Zimm would have been wise to consider what would happen if he were correct in Trademarks ill motives.  In addition, the fact that Trademark had already bolted from Zimmermans sight (why else would he run) what did he hope to accomplish by following, he would have done just as well to go to the other end of the cut through in his vehicle and wait for the police.  

I think Zimm should be aquited but he did act poorly, when you are armed you need to always consider the ramifications of your actions.   He was stupid and small time thug is not dead and he will have that burden to carry for the rest of his days.
