12 Here is an article on Kearby.  http://acepilots.com/usaaf_kearby.html

A Hamp fighter was an A6M3 Zero with clipped wings.  It was called Hap initially because someone wanted to honor Gen. Hap Arnold.  Until one briefing he was told how many Hap fighters got shot down.  Soon the name was changed to Hamp.

The Tony was Japan's only inline engine fighter.  Powered by a copy of the Daimler Benz DB-601.  Also had reliability issues so more often than not was shot up on the ground.

Wewak is along the turkey's back of New Guinea.  Hence the Port Morseby reference.

22 166 Depends,at some times guys rarely flew the same plane, though they had pne assigned. They flew whatever was available. At those times they often went on the plane they used.Which might have kills from multiple guys.Guy would put their personnel scoreboard on their assigned plane most times.

Posted by: steevy at November 03, 2013 05:54 AM (zqvg6)

28 So now I'm curious to see if Doc gets out of his prison at 12 after...

Posted by: HH at November 03, 2013 05:58 AM (XXwdv)

29 It depends.  A plane would officially be assigned to one pilot. But if an aircraft needed repair from last fight or was down for scheduled maintenance then the pilot would grab any plane that was available.  So an aircraft assigned to Lt. X got flown by Capt Y who ended up getting shot down.  So Lt. X would then fly whatever was available until he was assigned a new plane.

And the kill markings would follow the pilot.  Best example is Col. John Howard's P-51 Mustang named Ding Hao! that clearly shows both his Japanese and German victories.
