— Dave in Texas The unions keep hammering away at Wal-Mart, with dozens of hired protestors at stores around the country. Their living wage today is a $50 gift card.
Redeemable at Wal-Mart, and other retailers.
In the past, the United Food and Commercial Workers and OUR Walmart, a subsidiary of UFCW, had offered $50 gift cards to anyone who showed up to protest. The National Labor Relations Board approved the practice in a memorandum this month. Many anti-Walmart protests in the past have lacked actual Wal-Mart employees. At the protest on Friday, workers from other Wal-Mart locations were present, but none from the Ontario store.
I wonder who they are, if not actual Wal-Mart employees?

Never mind the poor, who need and benefit from lower prices for goods and services.
The United Food and Commercial Workers have been after Bentonville for 20 years. They would prefer lines in the street to buy toilet paper than the status quo. Because, justice or something.

2 You'd have to pay me a lot more than $50 to go to Walmart today.
A fifty might get me to the parking lot.

One reason I was able to get through grad school without taking out ruinous loans in a time of rapidly rising food prices was the availability of cheap staples at Wal-Mart. I doubt I could have survived on a part-time job without it.

Exactly. Every unions top priorities are:
1. the union's survivial
2. the union's power
3. the union's profits
Workers are only important to them in the sense that they contribute to those 3 priorities.

Know how there's this myth that Canadians are more polite than Americans?
Bullshit. What they do is, they do something completely impolite, then politely say "sorry." That's the only difference.
Oh, I just cut right in front of you in line? Sorry.
I just snatched the last gallon of 2 percent milk right out of your hands? Sorry.
They also park in handicap spots like they are their own personal parking spots.
And I'm sure they're sorry about that, too.
Nailed it.
Perfectly mobile 60 year old ladies elbow people out of the way to get on the train first, because they are old and no one will say anything.
I nearly always take a position on the platform to block the short one that waits until the train stops, then runs along the yellow strip in front of everyone to get right in front of the doors. Someone said something once - yep, the "sorry" and smile, like it's your grandma, whatcha gonna do?
And yet she does it every fucking day.

Another Walmart fact: if you travel in an RV or motorhome, Wal-Mart will let you dry-camp overnight on the outer periphery of their parking lot, no questions asked. And no charge. They get a few extra eyeballs on the property, which discourages crime and vandalism, and more often than not, the RV campers will pop into the store in the morning to snag some milk or bacon for brekky. That can save you some serious coin if you are on a long-distance road trip.

I dunno-- 'Stripes' shows a lot of contempt for the military.
Nope, the hero of that movie is Sgt. Hulka, particularly when he's giving Murray a beatdown in the bathroom and reminding him that although the parade ground stuff is BS, it's part of the necessary training to get to the point of doing something serious. I'd guess that a fair number of active duty types agreed with him.
That scene actually has a counterpart in "The Caine Mutiny", in which the hero tells Fred MacMurray what a lowlife he is, and that it's the Queegs of the world who keep the military going in the slack years who are all that prevents his aunt being turned into soap and used to wash Hermann Goring's fat ass.

Can't let that one go unchallenged. As a Canadian, from the West, mind you, I nearly always tip, if a tip is at all warranted. Usually 15-20%. I'd only forego the tip if the service was exceptionally bad.
But I do hear that Quebecers and people from Toronto (who like to style themselves as ersatz New Yorkers), are chintzy tippers. But I've never been there.
