Black Gold, Texas Tea
— Dave in Texas

Texas is experiencing an incredible boom in oil and gas production, because of technology and as bank robber Willie Sutton said "because that's where the money is."

In this case, the money is oil. And it's in Texas. Two shale fields in Texas together are producing more oil than any other field in the world.

Shale production is more expensive than pulling it out of the ground in Saudi Arabia, but at current market prices it's more than profitable to pump it out of these oil-trapped-in-rock formations. Some of these fields, like Eagle Ford have multiple layers. Right now Texas is producing 32% of all domestic oil. A half million jobs. And the economic upheaval it stressing the infrastructure in places where ten years ago there were rusting pumps and empty lines since the 80s.

So the Saudis have a cost advantage of production from the ground, but a disadvantage on shipment and refining. We're more than happy to take advantage of it.

The job opportunities are crazy insane.

Edgar Hernandez, 32, left Dallas for Midland two years ago when he couldnÂ’t find work. He says heÂ’s earning $2,000 a week working as a diesel engine mechanic for an oil field services company, but the lack of housing means he and his wife have had to live in a trailer home on the side of Interstate 20.

“I came here, and right away I had a job,” he said. “Everyone is looking for people.”

Saudi Arabia's answer to this surge is to build refineries they never bothered to build, because they never needed them. But to stay competitive they need em now.

So if you have a high school diploma and would like to make $80,000 a year handing out bottled water to roughnecks, buy yourself a camper home and head to Midland.

Hotels and apartments are just too damned expensive right now.

7 Of course, Obama takes credit for the increased oil production, because of course he does. It's pretty funny around here though. There's a pre-fabricated home lot off the highway with a big sign that says "5 bedroom home. Ready for delivery. Perfect for Oil Fields!" I'm guessing that they set a lot of those up as make shift dorms for the single men out there. Don't worry though, the liberals are trying to shut of the shales, because of course they are.

28 Every boom cycle is followed by a bust cycle.

There used to be a really common bumper sticker around here that read:

"Please God, Let there be another oil boom and I promised not to piss it away this time."

Opportunity is a wonderful thing.  Please take full advantage of your opportunities.  But, be smart morons.  Be very careful when riding a boom up to make sure you are not picking up debt (typically real estate at the wrong price) that will ruin your life in the other half of the cycle.

There will be different kinds of opportunities on the other side of the cycle.  Being cash-backwards to the cycle is the key.

53 Flying up the east coast of Texas you see the oil boom at night. Between Corpus Christi and San Antonio there is nothing to speak of other than ranches. But at night there is a strip of lights that runs for over a hundred miles - all oil rigs. Black gold, Texas Tea, MF-ing capitalism at work. It is a beautiful thing to see. And the drive between WAY south Texas and San Antonio shows it as well - storage facilities and pipelines going up at an amazing clip. Trailer park work towns popping up on the side of the highway. Anyone and everyone that is in any kind of business is making money. Got a bread truck? Make sandwiches and sell 2,000 of them a day out on the fields. Got a bakery? Sell the bread to the guy with the sandwich truck. The oil money is flowing in, and everyone is benefiting. Including the ladies of ill-repute. If I could get a year off I would open up a beer hall/pool joint on I-37 and get my pimp action on. Seriously, it is a huge boom, and everyone down the line is getting some of that cash.

And the smart ones are going to squirrel some of it away so that they still have something when the boom is over. The really smart ones are working for a way to make the production from shale cheaper so that extracting it will still be profitable after OPEC lowers their prices in an attempt to drive them out of the market.

If the frack/shale lift cost is say ~$50/bbl, that's the same as buying it from OPEC at $50/bbl.  They'd have to cut their prices by 50% before they'd make it uneconomical to do your own.

87 Carhops at Sonic are making $20 an hour; if your wife is hard working and friendly, she can earn upwards of $500 a night in tips waitressing at any good eatery (wait times for tables are easily an hour during off hours). Heck, KFC was offering $2000 and all the hours you want to start on the spot. Everyone needs employees, almost everyone will pay for training.... But, you'be got to work for it, slackers get ran over! And you'be got to emphasize the huge area included, we're talking hundreds of square miles!

I readily admit that I know nothing about such things, but I was under the impression that shale oil is harder to extract than just pumping it out of the ground. Different processes to extract it from the rock or some such.

90 What the TX stuff does is put a worldwide cap on the price of oil.  Once we're capable of producing the "last barrel of demand", we could always produce a bit more and collapse the price to whatever level we wanted to.  Its the "last barrel" that sets the overall price.

105 GGE, the short version is the frac job creates fissures in the rock that allows the oil to flow to the well bore. From there the standard physics of downhole pressure and friction loss dictate flowing well or artificial lift required.

177 Tobacco Road, Midland/Odessa is the heart of boom/bust country. So many fortunes won and lost in short periods of time. So yes, you were remembering correctly. And I am by no means a Texas oil expert - I am relatively young and have not lived in Texas my whole life. But I hear stories. And the story of the shale oil boom is a good ol' Texas tale of risk, gumption and know-how. And it has opened up a vast well of oil that the world has never seen before, or at least never been able to get to. Will this cycle end up in another huge bust? Time will tell, and every other Texas oil boom has ended with a big bust. But this one is not isolated to Texas - North Dakota is booming as well, and this one seems to be really rocking the mid-east oil sheiks. As someone said upthread, get while the getting is good and stash your money away. The guys with a CDL who were driving a school bus for $11/hour and are now making up to $100K/year driving for the oil companies - they need to bank that money while they can. And by bank I mean stuff in your mattress - do NOT pour it into the NEXT big oil play. But you knew that already!

189 To say Saudis have a cost advantage is a slight understatement. They're pulling it out of some wells at a cost of 50 cents a barrel. And its the high quality shit. Light, sweet crude. They can undercut anyone on a whim and still be making thousands of a percert in profit. Did I mention we should nuke Mecca? Just for the hell of it.

International Energy Agency, 12 Nov 13: "Technology and high prices are opening up new oil resources, but this does not mean the world is on the verge of an era of oil abundance, according to the International Energy AgencyÂ’s (IEA) 2013 edition of the World Energy Outlook (WEO-2013). Although rising oil output from North America and Brazil reduces the role of OPEC countries in quenching the worldÂ’s thirst for oil over the next decade, the Middle East — the only large source of low-cost oil — takes back its role as a key source of oil supply growth from the mid-2020s."

I really liked Divergent and Insurgent and Allegiant were not the disappointments that the rest of the Maze Runner series was.

Dauntless are supposed to be assholes and it becomes clear in the other books that the world is in fact unsustainable.  Part of the reason I like it is because the books are about the utter futility of trying to perfect human nature.   All the attempts to slot people into roles and force them into perfect little places only ends in blood everywhere.

196 What the TX stuff does is put a worldwide cap on the price of oil. Once we're capable of producing the "last barrel of demand", we could always produce a bit more and collapse the price to whatever level we wanted to. Its the "last barrel" that sets the overall price. I've been saying for years we didn't need to produce all our own oil, but we needed to be in the game for leverage. Meanwhile, the 'cool kids' have been pushing ethanol, wind, and solar.

205 Big boom in West Texas in late 70s, early 80s at the end of the Carter years, beginning of Reagan.  Price driven.  Activity was CRAZY and Midland/Odessa as well as Houston were booming. In 1986 price of oil dropped precipitously and stayed low. Everyone left town from the area, including the little towns that were part of the industry. Of course, the old timers and natives stayed, some of the boomers. Everything including real estate sold for a song in the late 80s.  Friend bought a former country club with swimming pool and 5 acres for $30K.

This boom is bigger. Frac/horizontal drilling driven. And $100 oil.  We had a price dive in 08 to $60 a bbl which slowed but didn't stop things. But now it's cooking. And yes, a price crash could kill the boom.

Our school district is months behind on maintenance, because they had to pull all their maintenance guys who had CDLs and put them in school buses because all the bus drivers had departed for Eagle Ford. But everyone's pretty damn cheerful about it because everyone's so happy about the prosperity. I am friends with a couple who are landsmen (deal with rights to land re drilling leases and stuff)--neither of whom have college degrees, and who just paid cash for a very nice new house, at age 32. How nice would that be to have no mortgage at that age? Agree with the comments regarding the mobile home cities, dorm buildings and so on that are going up by the side of the freeways in south/central TX. 236 Two points;

1. Price of housing in Texas: Please, before you move to Texas; call a motel there and ask for the weekly price of a room and go on the internet and look at home rental or purchase prices in Midland, Odessa, San Angelo, Laredo, Devine, Pearsall Tx. Then call to see if it is still available. It will blow your mind. And it is not advised to drink the water from the tap with out a RO unit installed.
2: Shale Oil field vs Saudi oil: Back when I was a fracker it was industry standard lore that the average vertical oil well production flowed/pumpjacked/N2-CO2 injected oil well average, in the Permian basin (Midland/Odessa) was 10 bbl a day with a barrel being 42 gallons. There are 10's of thousands of these decades old oil wells in proven fields with proven reserves and in the 70's it was "standard lore" that the then conventional production services; including acidization and fracking, still only produced 5 to 10% of the oil in the zone. These conventional vertical wells take used to take 30 + days to drill, complete, and make available for piping/trucking. I believe I read that the current horizontal fracking increase's that production to 20 to 30% of the hydrocarbons in the zone. This boom can last a long time.
Saudi Oil wells; as I was told by a man that had spent 15 years there for Aramco, at that time, early 70's, oil wells took 5 days to drill, complete, and produce, flowed, without fracking or any mechanical/gas service, 25,000 bbls a day and they flared all the NG that came out of every well.

238 Threads dead but I got 2 cents. Know the area well. The evionuts tried pulling a lizard out their butt to shut the place down CA style. The folks down their don't take to kindly to outsiders telling them what to do with their land. And when I say their land, TX is like 85% privet owned and they take land rights very seriously. The most well maintained and productive state in the country, even in the most destitute places like around Lubbock. Cotton fields (they produce over half the countries needs) with oil wells and big wind mills in the middle of them. Got friends who own some land and get money from the oil companies to drill on it. Texas rocks! Freedom and liberty. You can pretty much do what you want as long as you don't mess with anyone else's freedom or property.

I've been driving from San Antonio down to Goliad, Texas, for a good few years  - for book events, mostly. I can confirm personally that the change in various little towns has been incredible. Acquaintances in Goliad have conformed our superficial observations. The difference in all those little towns has been like night and day. They were dying on the vine, all boarded-up storefronts five years ago, and now lively and crowded.

Hope they spend it all wisely - this is a nice part of the US. I'd rather that what I pay at the gas pump goes to Texas than to Saudi Arabia.

240 I work in the eagleford shale field.  Last year I paid $550 a month for a camper spot on a muddy field, with electric and water and direct tv included in that price.  Now that same spot is only $425 a month.    You can get other spots out of city limits for as cheap as $350, but thats the cheapest i have seen within an hour of the field (the field being a 7 county strip currently). I only work in 3 or 4 county area mainly.

Its funny, you can get a hotel cheaper in san antonio than in a small town an hour outside of it, which is the opposite of how it normally is.  A Super 8 room is $160ish a night, 2 hours north it is $60ish a night.

There are a lot of man camp portable buildings/cabins set up now, but most monthly rents for these are in the $1200 range.

Hot stock tip.... Valero is building gas stations in all these small towns....just saying.

Oh by the way... Dominion was drilling and completing one and two stage verticles in the marcellus  in 15 days, but they only produced around 300k to 500k mcf per day nat gas.

Eog just completed a well that peaked at 7500 bbl in one 24 hour period, no info on number of stages:http://tinyurl.com/p43wlno
I only been in the game for 5 years, but the fracking tech has gotten a lot better in that short time. Now they are about to start using natural gas gel as the frack medium instead of water, sucks for my discipline but will remove another argument from the green's arsenal.
