Bleg Thread: What Posts Over the Past Ten Years Would You Like to See Republished?
— Ace

This is a self-indulgent thing, but the ten year anniversary (ten years; my God) of the site is coming up. In addition, this is a slow news period, and people typically do "Best of the Year" type crap during this period to fill up column-inches.

I don't have a good memory of stuff I've written, so I'd like to ask you guys: Anything you think can be republished and still make sense?

The request concerns any and all posts, including those by the cobloggers, except the Meatball, who is dead to me, and I don't feel like linking The Federalist as part of the Ace of Spades retrospective.

A few I've already got in mind: Howard Fineman getting drunk and talking up Barack Obama, Kaboom, and Rich "Psycho" Giambatti. Plus the various "Almost as White As" lists.

57 Kaboom is a classic, but I had a slight disagreement with Ace's take. Kaboom was not a breakfast cereal, it was a multi-media, multi-year art installation demonstrating man's inhumanity to man, expressed through shape and color. Either that or it was an act of patriarchal suppression.

Posted by: Pajama boy, with a master's in art from Oberlin at December 19, 2013 08:45 AM (d3clc)

58 I'd like to see at least excerpts of the really useful insights, such as the observation that the media selectively uses ostensibly neutral storylines to advance an agenda, and the observation that polls are useless if they ask people if they'd like a Ferrari WITHOUT accounting for the cost of that sports car -- an index of these insights would be FANTASTIC.

Posted by: Filly at December 19, 2013 01:38 PM (xJhbp) Very very very short version, ace posted about racial humor and not using it and he was being dead serious about it all. In the comments, someone mentioned something about longbows v. crossbows and how the greater firepower of longbows led to military dominance way back when. A fairly interesting academic discussion about this started. Then ace came in the comments and asked that we please knock if off with the longbows shit because he wanted us to concentrate on the topic of the post. The Horde took that direction as well as one would expect. I'm not kidding that ace nearly said fuck all y'all I'm out about it.

Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at December 19, 2013 10:05 AM (zF6Iw)

315 Yeah, the Schiavo episode was raw nerves, but I'm more ambivalent about it now than I was then.

Either way, that was what made the flamewar so GLORIOUS back then.  1.) Everybody was riled up as hell; 2.) It was a smaller, more tight-knit community back then so we could all rank on each other without actually having out-and-out hatred come to the surface (oh man, Ace nailed me to the wall when I suddenly got all "wait, am I hurting anyone's feelings? I'm sorry!"); 3.) We were all a lot funnier back then.  Now we're older and more embittered.

Anyway, the First Flamewar Thread is one of the greatest commenter (and Ace)-driven threads in the history of the blog, and the "Damage Report" after-action assessment from the next morning is nearly as good.

For whatever reason, I think Ace's funniest posts are the ones in which he's just responding to an idea or a story rather than consciously trying to be funny.  When he says "this is one of the funniest things I've written" it's a pretty good tipoff that I personally won't find it all that funny.  IMHO.

Eh, sometimes.  I think a statement like that usually comes from a sense on his part that "damn I put a lot of effort and revision and thought into this."  I agree that sometimes a casual approach leads to big laughs, but then again look at the Robin Thicke and Kaboom posts -- the Thicke one is slightly better (because it's less massaged and revised; the Kaboom one is a bit over-stuffed post-rewrite, IMO) but they're both monumentally funny and their length is a huge part of that.

397 When I think AoSHQ, I think of lesbian porn, skankathon, the guys get shirts, one where you told about going into a chat dungeon and pretending you were an elf, and the time you and Allah went to see Brokeback Mountain. Breitbart saying he read the comments, and the time you got pre-empted by the Israeli tank. "Smart military blog." In comments, Things Thomas Jefferson Said, Volume III, and any and all trash-talking by Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr.

398 If you could find the time you explained the 2x4 thing, that would be good. I think you mentioned it in the comments, though, not a post.

400 did anyone mention the "Everything is Awesome" threads after the dems won that midterm because that one was funny sorry no time to read all the replies or use caps or commas or oh hey how about the men's magazine riff on women's magazines thread that was great therefore such as

401 For the love of God the whole Patrick McGoohan Columbo riff needs to be preserved for eternity. Ideally, it should be carved into the side of a Persian mountain for future archaeologists to marvel at.

403 I seem to remember a global warming post that made me lulz. I remember it involved insulting us low-level cretins for not accepting science that turned out to be not-so-sciencey and perhaps a wee fraudulent. It was during the whole "hide the decline" fiasco.

406 Any post on Anthony Weiner.

407 401  I remember "Everything is Awesome" was Ace's way of saying to delusional Republicans that, well, Barack was about to win in 2008.  He even started a second blog, I think.  I was looking for it back in 2011 when the primary was going on.

And the Anthony Weiner stuff was great.  It was like watching a scandal unfold in real time.  Ace even had to admonish many other Conservative Media members for sitting on it, but luckily we had a brief moment where the good guys won.

408 The D&D Guide to Democratic Candidates in 2004. Ace has been my first stop every day since then. I think Jonah Goldberg linked that post way back then.

411 OK, this is NOT YOURS but... Empire of Jeff has a pathetic, boring (He don't post enough!) little blog going on here: http://empireofjeff.wordpress.com/ I would nominate his post about how he got to be a Garbage Truck Guy as an all-time classic.

414 Was this the one where the whole "moron" thing really took off? http://ace.mu.nu/archives/054119.php#054119 I recall it being a kind of thing that would come up, but I sorta also recall this as being when self-identifying as "moron" became the hallmark of the site. (Where is everyone, anyway?)
