Bobby Jindal's Funny Speech at the Gridiron
— Ace

A lot of good stuff, including goofin on the media for its bias.

Here are some of the better jokes:

IÂ’m honored to be here tonight, and to have this opportunity to represent my people.

As you know, my people are one of our nation’s most accomplished minority groups – doctors…lawyers…business owners…and of course, I’m referring to the Republican Party.

They say this is a place where you can come and tell jokes about the PresidentÂ…poke fun at yourselfÂ…set political ambition aside and just generally say anything you want.

Kind of like the Romney campaign.

I spoke to Mitt the other dayÂ…told him that I was doing the Gridiron dinnerÂ…he said that 47 percent of you canÂ’t take a joke.

This of course is the night for the Washington press corps and the President to kick back, share a few laughs, not take things seriously and just generally enjoy each otherÂ’s company.

Kind of like the PresidentÂ’s interview on 60 Minutes.

The Gridiron Dinner used to be known as the night the media and the administration set aside their differences — back in the days when they had some.

I was on the treadmill the other day and I caught something about the supreme and infallible leader ordained from on high stepping down, and I got all excited, but then I realized it was just the Pope not the President.

...

ButÂ…what a difference a day makesÂ…now some people have asked me if I intend to run for President in 2016?

And the answer is that I have no plans to run. IÂ’ve made that clear, over and over againÂ…in IowaÂ…in New HampshireÂ…and in South Carolina.

...

The truth is – I am too skinny to run. At least that’s what my friend Chris Christie keeps telling me.

Chris pointed out that my biceps are half the size of ObamaÂ’s guns. Not the presidentÂ’s, MichelleÂ’s.

...

I was one of Rick PerryÂ’s strongest supporters. I supported Rick because heÂ’s a loyal friend, a great governor, andÂ…oopsÂ…I forget the third reason.

...

YouÂ’ll have to excuse me for a second. IÂ’m drying up. I need a drink of water.

I was hoping to finally meet Mayor Bloomberg here tonightÂ…Â…Â…thatÂ’s a lie

I was also hoping to see Harry ReidÂ…..thatÂ’s another lie

...

The Menendez scandal is disturbing. Soliciting prostitution is completely unacceptable. We would never put up with that in Louisiana.

Great to see the new Senator from Massachusetts – Elizabeth Warren. My staff tells me we’ve got a lot in common.

Well from one Indian politician to another, I want to wish you all the best in your new job.

I ran into Joe Biden earlier today. I donÂ’t think he recognized me though. He asked me to go get him a Slurpee.

...

I see Eric Holder is with us tonight. I actually heard a rumor that due to sequestration, the attorney general can only afford to ship a couple hundred illegal guns across the border this year.

I saw a bumper sticker on the way over here that said, “Honk if you’ve been released by Janet Napolitano.”

I understand that to save money – the President’s Secret Service detail is being replaced by Joe Biden with a shotgun.

Mr. President, I see a lot of famous people here tonight. Some of our top journalists. I donÂ’t see Bob Woodward, though. He sends hisÂ…regrets.

...

You know, a lot of people warned me that if I voted for Mitt Romney, a Wall Street robber baron who hid his money in secretive Grand Cayman bank accounts would end up running the U.S. Treasury.

I see Jack Lew is here tonight. Good thing that job went to you instead, Jack.

...

This may surprise you, but IÂ’m looking forward to President ObamaÂ’s second term.

It will be refreshing to hear him stop blaming all the countryÂ’s problems on the last four years.

People say that the President and I both have trouble laughing at ourselves.

We canÂ’t laugh at ourselves. That would be racist.

...

Then he makes a decent pitch for his run for President:

The greatest thing about having parents who are immigrants, is that they force you to understand the value and uniqueness of our freedom.

Freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religionÂ…you name it, they put great value on it and they never take it for granted.

And to them, there is no greater person than the one who has sacrificed all to keep us free.

I want to thank you all for letting me participate in this little piece of freedom here tonight.

Good night and God Bless.

85 I'd gone to the Louisiana Gridiron show for years. Jindal's been one of the better elected officials when it comes to rebuttals, as he's geniuinely funny and will roll with the punches, such as making fun of himself and his staff for the ethics faux pas of getting free Hannah Montana tickets, which had been run into the ground by the performers that night. Former Gov. Kathleen Blanco was notably bad at this kind of thing, as she'd go overlong and wouldn't be funny.

86 Man that speech killed, I followed some of the other links after reading the full speech and the Chicago Times only mentions the lines Jindal cracked about his fellow Republicans.  They didn't mention any of those brutal slams on Democrats.

Even today I have to wonder if they are so damn stupid that they didn't get those jokes or if they are so damn dishonest they just have to pretend they didn't happen but then I remember that it is probably both.

A feel good story of the day involving Bloomberg would involve stairs and gravity.

Posted by: Heralder at March 11, 2013 11:23 AM (+xmn4)

123 On the soda ban ban. From the WSJ The regulations are "fraught with arbitrary and capricious consequences," the judge wrote. "The simple reading of the rule leads to the earlier acknowledged uneven enforcement even within a particular city block, much less the city as a wholeÂ….the loopholes in this rule effectively defeat the state purpose of the rule." So the Judge isn't saying the ban is wrong, he's saying it leaves too much wiggle room. By this logic, if they re-pass it in a more consistent version (presumably including (this time) sit-down restaurants and convenience stores, or whatever), the same judge would presumably allow it to continue. So, good that it got stopped, but not good enough, and not for the right reasons.

151 I am a little confused as to when a mayor gained the power to legislate what we eat and drink based on his own personal predilections.

In the salad days we called that dictatorial, autocratic, unconstitutional and the product of a despot.

The arbitrary and capricious part is not only how he applied the law- it's the rationale for the law itself. Notwithstanding the fact it was very deliberately constructed this way because it would not otherwise pass, I would not jump to supposition it would pass if rewritten.. Governmental power has limits and NY has exceeded them.

160 I am a little confused as to when a mayor gained the power to legislate what we eat and drink based on his own personal predilections. Technically, there's a "Board" that sets these "Rules" (yes, just like the various departments at the Federal Level). So, yes, I'm thinking there's at least a decent chance a new "less capricious" rule gets adopted.

168 But, a caller to the severin program said rand paul voted against the confirmation of brennan. I was surprised as beck was saying he voted for the confirmation. Full answer: Rand Paul voted for cloture, but against confirmation. This is what we call "a kind of weasel." Voting for cloture is, in essence, a vote for confirmation, since the Democrats hold the majority. Many conservatives (including myself) think this is a bit of a capitulation (to be nice). It would be one thing if we thought Brennen (or, worse: Hagel) had been something resembling qualified (to be truthful, Brennen is something that at least resembles "qualified" when seen in poor light), and the problems we had with them only been policy or philosophy problems. However, neither Hagel nor Brennen (nor, before them, Kerry) are qualified, so hiding behind a "No" vote on confirmation after voting "yest" on cloture seems kind of cowardly to me. YMMV.

Don't want! But, I do wish him the best of luck with the politics within his crumbling party.

Oh. My. God. Stop. That. Shit.

If you are a citizen by virtue of your birth, you are a "natural-born citizen".

There are only 2 kinds: "natural-born" and "naturalized". There is no magic generational window. There was some attempt to find some historical statements that natural-born meant something else so that we could declare Obama ineligible.

Nope. Not true. Jindal is a "natural-born citizen" because he wasn't naturalized.

I said there was a question, not that he was disqualified. I don't recall the details - I just remember that there were some folks that thought he might not be qualified. Hence the caveat about jumping on the Jindal '16 bandwagon.

Personally, I would be delighted if he ran - I like him and never figured out why one poor speach in '08 was such a deal-breaker when balanced against years of good governance.

Bobby Jindhal, the POS left wing fascist posing as a republican;  the man who would send his state brownshirts out to businesses because they have the crassness to sell milk below the price that he demands it be sold at;  the man who wants to ban the use of cash at garage sales because it could lead to his state not getting it's fair share;  the man who wants to turn parents into child protective services because they are late on a school lunch payment....

yeah, that man wants to be the nominee for what once was considered a freedom party, you know pre-Romneycare.

Sure wish you captured that sort of stuff in a blog somewhere.

Both the R sens and R reps use the arcane rules of both houses to obscure what they might be accountable for, which is of course one of the may reasons for the arcana.

In principle, I voted for the will of the (dem) senate, and I also voted in principle against the nominee!

But. There. Isn't. A. Fucking. Question.

As someone who was born and in the USA but has a biological parent who is not a citizen, I don't think that those who were pushing this were mindful of the long-term implications: that there are allegedly three categories of citizenship. We know that there are only two, as you said

179 Okay, first thought: wow! That is hilarious! I can't believe he went all up in there! Second thought: where the fuck are THESE speeh writers on a regular basis? This is the stuff that should lead the news every morning, noon and night. Mean and funny. Make them defend themselves against hilarious and true jokes about heir atrocious record!

177 Bobby Jindhal, the POS left wing fascist posing as a republican; the man who would send his state brownshirts out to businesses because they have the crassness to sell milk below the price that he demands it be sold at; the man who wants to ban the use of cash at garage sales because it could lead to his state not getting it's fair share; the man who wants to turn parents into child protective services because they are late on a school lunch payment....yeah, that man wants to be the nominee for what once was considered a freedom party, you know pre-Romneycare.

At least learn to spell the man's last name correctly.

-The milk price fixing program didn't originate with Jindal, it came about in the 70's under a democratic administration. If we're saying that administrative enforcement of an existing law makes it so that the current senior elected official "demanded compliance", than we should reject the memory of Ronald Reagan because he demanded compliance with unnecessary taxes and administrative fees every single one of his years in office. After all, even though he reduced or eliminated many and probably would have done away with more if he could have managed it, they were all collected while he was there. Would it be better if this law wasn't on the books? Yes, but it's more helpful to the majority of Lousiana's citizens if the tenure track for teachers is abolished and the state income tax is ended. Jindal will be much more responsible for those successes than he is for enforcement of the milk price rules.

-Cash sales between individuals have not been outlawed in Louisiana. They had an epidemic of people stealing sheet metal and wiring from both abandoned and occupied properties and reselling it. The legislation requires that records be kept, not outlawed, on cash transactions above $25 that occur more than once per month. The state is trying to police an area causing harm to citizens and businesses in the state. It creates an added burden, but given the problem I can't say I blame them.

-The stated goal is that cases where people don't pay for 3 meals in a row are reported to Child Protective Services, because it may be symptomatic of other issues at home.

I don't like the last law, if only because a simple mistake in billing info could result in three missed payments and a notification. But given everything else that Jindal has and will accomplished, along with his drive and intelligence, is this bill- which may be modified anyway, once the effects are realized- enough to show that he's a secret fascist?

181 ah, KingCranium, I see what you are saying, that he is only using the guise of public benefit to nibble away at freedoms.  That the masses just need to be reasoned to in a way to show that government control of even the mundane aspects of your life is warranted for your own good because, well, there are the occasional one or two bad apples in every thousand of them.....yep, maybe that is more bordering on Marxism than Fascism, but, then again, I see a more pro-corporate bonding there so I tend to still go with the latter.

Look, the media makes fun of us enough  without dopes  like  Jindal  doing it, too. I did not find his jokes about Mitt  or PERRY funny AT. All.   Jindal has been on my  s-list since he ranted about the party for all the wrong reasons a few months ago.   Now I have more  reasons. It's for Mitt to make fun of himself  and it's for Perry to make fun of himself (which he has more than he even needed to, btw)  not for poseur "friends" to stab them in the  back in DC  in front of the  ENEMY.  Stay in LA, Bobby, and leave us  alone.

If this   had been just another election, these jokes  would be  funnier, but it's not funny to have one Republican make fun of his fellow Republicans to the ENEMIES' faces.  It would be like  Patton making fun of FDR in front of Hitler.

Nobody realizes the situation we're in.

184 #184, Doug, the problem of metal theft was so bad that when I was at Fort Polk from 2009-2011, raiders from off-post would come into the training area between rotations and steal whatever they could sell for scrap elsewhere. We had a 20 foot steel shipping container vanish. Hacked up and hauled off. Another group broke into FOB Anvil and stole EVERY SINGLE AIR CONDITIONER to sell for the copper. They came onto a range DURING a live fire and stole the 12 volt marine batteries out of the target mechanisms.

Most of Louisiana is a fucking third world country, especially that west edge. The roads suck, the schools suck, and only the food is worth going near it. Most people think of Mardi Gras and Duck Dynasty, and that's nowhere near most of it. The Air Force could have missed Redleg Impact Area and killed every living thing in Pitkin and I wouldn't have given a shit.

Dan, those people usually get caught, at least around here they do.  They don't get caught right away, but I'm guessing they don't last more than a few months - the problem is once they get caught (and that plan isn't going to catch any more of them any faster, or deter it any more) they don't face enough jail time to make it worth it.  They are tweakers for the most part and should be in prison for 7 or more years when they do get caught.  Here, they have to be caught 3 times before they do any time.

Again, the solution to that particular problem is following the law and incarcerate them to the fullest allowed, instead they chose to still be lenient to save jail space but instead inconvenient the vast majority of folks who do work honestly.

Red tape bureacracy working in conjuction with business is not anyone's solution except the big government types and Jindal is one of those - only that the big govt. he wants is one he pulls the strings of.  We need to PURGE the politicians that have that mindset.

The govt. is there to work for us, not the other way around.
