Boehner Plan Dying?
— Ace

This seems significant enough for a new post, even though I normally would have added it to the last one as an update.

Well this is getting worrisome.

Then That's On You, Bitch:

Update: "Dead."

Default means debt payments exceed income.

We are not there.

Yet.

Keep bumping up the debt 'ceiling' and we WILL.

NOT BORROWING MORE does not equal DEFAULT. If the debt ceiling is not raised, that does NOT MEAN that we are "defaulting" on anything. Holy Christ. This is the problem with the right. We can't even get our fucking story straight and just accept whatever the liberal media says. Do everyone a favor, Ace, and stop posting about this stuff. 28 Well this is getting worrisome, because I don't wish the country to actually default

It doesn't matter, the government is going to default. Along with pretty much every other government in the world. This is inevitable.

You want the default not to happen right now and are willing to trade a more costly default a little later for the time now. Or you are choosing not to think about medium term consequences. I don't know. But the failure of this government in no more than a few years, with Obamacare implemented, is a certainty.

105 Here is a sequential game.

I vote. I want result 2, 1, 0 in that order.
A D in office will give me 0. If I don't vote R we can assume a D will get in office.

This game is played as a series. One after another.

For the R, he would rather give me 1,0,2 in that order because it makes it easier for him to be re-elected.

If I vote R the R only has to give me 1 to improve my result over D. Therefore. Nash equilibrium, I should always vote R, and R should always give me 1. Every time we play.

I really want 2. How do I get 2? I have to convince R that I'm willing to act in a way not in my best interests in the sub-game series. The reputation of the irrational player.

You want to know why we seem like crazy ex-girlfriends R's you forced it on us. The only logical way to get more out of you was to not act in our immediate best interests in the current subgame.

Welcome to the irrational player. LIB

Posted by: Jeff B. at October 15, 2013 06:05 PM (n/+FT)

There's no legitimate reason for anyone born after the baby boomers to pay for the debt they racked up. So default (as noted by others, broadly defined as the government not giving out money to all the people it promised to) is the highest moral goal available.

Recognizing that's unpopular, I would be willing to compromise to immediate balancing of the federal budget today, including current interest and some pay down of the debt as part of that budget until such time as the debt is entirely gone, at which point government must be barred from borrowing outside of wartime. A good first step on that road is defunding/repeal of Obamacare to be rid of the costs it is imposing.

Failure to do so little as that means DC just keeps loading up the credit card until something that will later be characterized as "completely unforeseeable" spooks the bond market and triggers a balanced budget at a time when doing so ends all 'mandatory' spending programs, or the default you pretend to be concerned about. This latter scenario will be much worse for everyone it touches since more debt will have accumulated by then and the resolution will be entirely chaotic.

So, back to my original point, this ALL falls on the Executive.   Default can ONLY be blamed on inaction from the Executive Office.

Did he make some fundamental change that arrested the creeping progressive movement? I'll admit, I wasn't there in the 1980s, but I will infer that nothing of substance was actually done because we are right back where we started in 1979, only now we've got more debt than anyone has ever seen.

Not correct.

Blowing off payments to contractors and employees is not default. Not paying a legally mandated installment on U.S. government bonds is default.

In fact, the markets might react favorably to a deal (hypothetical in the extreme. It will never happen) in which the debt was prioritized and then all other government payments were negotiated.

167 Re Vitter, I posted this on a dead thread but think it fits here... I've been reading Ace's timeline and within it is an NRO article which tries to make the point that by removing the employer contributions to purchase insurance on the exchanges, the salary of Congress and their staff is effectively lowered, resulting in an unequal hardship. I'm just not buying it. Another point they make is that, perhaps, their benes are too generous, and should be pared back, but not eliminated. With this I can possibly agree. BUT.... some within Ace's timeline suggest that private industry, upon dumping individuals from their insurance policies (if they maintain a policy at all) are raising wages in order to facilitate the purchase of insurance in the private or Obamacare exchanges. Thus far, evidence of this is anecdotal. I'd have to see an awful lot more evidence of "unequal treatment" before I will buy into the unequal treatment argument.

Political commentator William F. That he was surprised at all says worlds about his lack of awareness of the true state of national affairs and--had we known about it earlier--would've disqualified him as a Republican candidate for any higher office.

258 the constitution applies to Congress, too, and if Congress is going to go all YOLO about it, why would the president have the sole duty of enforcing this guarantee (which is required of the US government as a whole)?

Which branch is the Treasury under?

The government would also be in "technical default" if it didn't send out SS payments on time or for the full amount, or pay contractors money promised, or meet payroll, etc.

That's, I think, more problematic than you're realizing, as far as credit rating.

Posted by: ace

Default = not servicing debt. Period.

Here's that notorious rabid right-wing group, Moody's, just last week:

"We believe the government would continue to pay interest and principal on its debt even in the event that the debt limit is not raised, leaving its creditworthiness intact,” the memo says. “The debt limit restricts government expenditures to the amount of its incoming revenues; it does not prohibit the government from servicing its debt. There is no direct connection between the debt limit (actually the exhaustion of the Treasury’s extraordinary measures to raise funds) and a default.”

267 President Obama’s top adviser Valerie Jarrett was behind a plan to force a showdown with Republicans over ObamaCare as part of a strategy to regain Democratic control of the House next year, claims author Ed Klein. Klein — who wrote a provocative biography about Obama last year entitled “The Amateur” — said White House insiders refer to Jarrett as “The Night Stalker” because she is the only presidential aide who frequently spends time in the family quarters and dines with the Obamas. Klein, who is conducting a research for a new Obama tome scheduled for next spring, called Jarrett the “architect” of Obama’s take-no- prisoners approach when it comes to his signature domestic policy initiative. It was Jarrett who advised Obama that voters would mostly blame Republicans if the federal government ground to a halt, providing a golden opportunity to swing back control of the House to Democrats in the 2014 mid-term elections, according to Klein. A Democratic House would give Obama an opportunity to pass immigration and other legislation blocked by the current Republican majority. “It was during one of those nightly sessions that Jarrett devised the no-negotiating strategy that Obama has employed in his fight with the GOP over the government shutdown,” Klein said, citing sources within the administration. “Valerie came up with the concept late at night, after the kids and grandma and were gone.” “She convinced the president that a government shutdown and default offered a great opportunity to demonize the Republicans and help the Democrats win back a majority in the House of Representatives in 2014 . . . Valerie also came with the idea of using the words `hostage’, and `ransom,’ and `terrorists’ against the Republicans,’” Klein said. Jarrett, who like the Obamas hails from Chicago, has deep ties to the president, First Lady Michelle and the extended family. “Everyone in the Beltway knew Valerie Jarrett was influential. They didn’t know how influential she was,” said Klein, who interviewed more than a half dozen White House and former presidential advisers about the shutdown strategy. “Her power derived from one simple fact — proximity, No one except Michelle Obama is closer to the president than Valerie,” Klein quoted Democratic power broker Vernon Jordan as saying. Jordan’s wife is a cousin of Jarrett. Jarrett is the one who advised Obama “do not cooperate one iota on ObamaCare. Don’t given an inch. Let the Republicans stew in their own juice,“ Klein said. “The Republicans walked into a trap set up by Valerie Jarrett and President Obama, The Republicans are in an untenable position,” he added. Klein said Jarrett is the conscience of the administration, “the keeper of the flame” who reminds Obama why he wanted to become president. “The government shutdown is about protecting ObamaCare, yes. But it’s much larger than that. It’s about the 2014 House elections,” said Klein. The White House had no immediate comment. NY Post: But we here knew that all along

But every liberal president elected over the last 100 years had not only been considered to have a mandate, but acted upon it, and we are still feeling those effects. We still have the New Deal and the Great Society hanging around our necks. We will go forward with Obamacare as long as we can stand.

That said, we're sort of betting a lot of Barry Obama's character, aren't we? Like we seem to think, simultaneously, he's an evil Machiavellian socialist, and also that he wouldn't rather gladly wreck the global economy for the sake of socialism. Socialism tends to advance during periods of extreme hardship and fear -- not during periods of comfort and confidence. Socialism is the ideology of the weak and fearful. Panics, wars, want, privation, and so forth create the grounds for socialism, not for a capitalist uprising.

307 As of June 30, the Treasury had $1.6 trillion in financial assets. This includes over $600 billion of student loans that can be securitized and sold into the secondary market instead of being held on the nation's balance sheet.
http://tinyurl.com/3t9358
See Table L.105.

At the end of 2008, that number was about $1.3 trillion, and that included $50 billion of TARP and about $200 million of excess cash. So assuming the amount that is truly needed for working capital is somewhere between $1 and 1.1 trillion, there is about $500 billion that can be raised by selling financial assets.

Who could buy it in a jiffy? Why, those folks who have been printing money by the billions to buy Treasury bonds for the last few years: the Fed. They are going to have to do something different, anyway -- at the current rate they're buying mortgage-backed securities, sometime in 2015-16 the Fed will own all the available mortgages in the country. Buying student loans and other Treasury receivables makes logical sense, assuming QE-infinity. Which is not a bad assumption, the way things are going.
To continue, there are literally thousands of potential oil, gas, and mineral leases that the Interior Department could put into the market. The biddable element on those is the bonus payment. That's right, up front cash to the Treasury (and then royalties later on if exploration is successful, and income taxes and jobs, too -- what a concept).

We haven't even started talking about the $3+ trillion of property, plant, and equipment owned by Uncle Sam -- and that $3 trillion is book value, not market value. Who knows what some of that is worth. Might have to squeeze some bureaucrats into smaller offices or make them share, but I think we and they could manage.

And all that is just on the balance sheet, without even looking at actually reducing expenses. We are a long, long, long way from default. Could be years, if properly managed.

*****************************************

When the time comes, we will be ready.

I don't see a huge meltdown. I just see that the Federal government will have to stop doing some things that it currently does, and lay some people off, and cut back on some transfer payments. That can either happen in an orderly way (as it might have if Romney had been elected) or in a chaotic, crisis way (which is more likely with Choom Gang in charge).

When the Feds stop doing everything they're doing, the states will be expected to step in. Some (blue) will and some (red) won't. Kind of like Medicaid expansion or Obamacare exchanges. We will be sorted out. The blue states will continue to go broke even faster, lose jobs to the red states, and be unable to support the nonproductive in the manner to which they have become accustomed. The result will be riots in urban areas, increased crime, and further downward spiral. There will be refugees coming from urban areas to red states.

In the end, federal and blue state bankruptcy and the remaking of the compact is inevitable. This will play out over the next couple of decades.

See, the funny thing is I agree with you - and that's exactly why I think the proper thing to do when that is "the most rightward electable candidate" is to say, fuck it, and oppose them. Because the best choice for the future may not be served by repeatedly sacrificing the bulk of my principles in order to advance someone who will not just vote a certain way, but promote and encourage a suite of positions that I may find deplorable. Note that I'm not saying 'never bend'. I'm saying there's a limit to it. If someone is pro-obamacare, pro-gun-control, pro-abortion, pro-affirmative-action, but they happen to be in favor of tax cuts for corporations, why should I vote for them? Because the PARTY will thrive? Because that tax cut bit can technically be regarded as 'rightward' and that should be good enough for me? "Mike Castle is a prick. But had he been elected to the Senate, he would have voted for a Republican for majority leader, and could have been counted on for some votes. As it stands, Chris Coons owes us nothing and has been voting against us constantly since he was elected. Did Delaware Republicans make the right choice in COD?" The funny thing is, you can't even guarantee that a liberal republican will vote for a Republican majority leader. Several of them ended up switching parties in the past when it seemed convenient for them to do so. Others, like McCain, spend a lot of their time actually damaging the party whenever said party doesn't do what they like, or whenever they feel like it's in their best interests to do so. By the way - why is it okay for the politicians to be self-serving in office, but people can't be self-serving with their votes?

396 I can't believe I'm now thinking this way but I really think the time has come for the Blue states especially those in the North East to give serious consideration to dissolving the Union with the Red Southern States. You moronic Southerners are nothing more than a massive net drain on our taxes (always receiving more from the federal government than you contribute), a repository of all the stupidiest ideas from teaching creationism in schools to allowing people to carry guns into court rooms etc. You obviously no longer have any commitment to a common democratic enterprise in this nation. So I'm happy to let you all piss off and drown in your own incompetence. You're now nothing more than anchor on our democracy and wealth. With you gone we would have the global reserve currency and you could have whatever crank currency you so choose. 402 It most certainly will if people keep advocating for it too. Advocating has little to do with it. Look at our current debt and ask yourself where we will be when sovereign borrowing goes back to 3-5% interest. Our current debt is unmanageable at those rates, much less the trillion plus per year that the Choom Caucus has been adding. We are over leveraged. Our choices are an explicit default, or monetizing. Looking at the rising prices and the smoking presses at the Fed, our leaders have chosen the latter.

Unlike all this abstract budget crap the public really doesn't understand, O-care is self-focusing.

People understand their rates going up 2X-3X, cuz that money isn't abstract.

Morons and moronettes, that is what we're up against. These fuckers do not play around and we're trying to nail shit to the side of an outhouse.

When you put Preezy Stompyfeet's words and actions in context with his narcissism, his past influences, the Marxist teachers, Stompy wins either way. Tails, Obamacare, in all of is ignominity, gets implemented.  Heads, he presides over some seriously uncharted fiscal territory. What better rush for a malignant sociopathic narcissist.

We all know that we will not default on Thursday. Fedzilla takes in plenty of cash to service our debt. But considering Stompy has wiped his shitty ass with Constitution the past 5 years, does anyone really think he'll honor the 14th Amendment come Friday morning? Do you really think Boner and Triple Chin will do anything when Stompy decides "let me be clear, the 14th Amendment is old and doesn't apply to these extraordinary times....".

Stompy will inflict as much pain as possible; no SS payments, no VA payments, double-down on parks, etc..... and maybe, just maybe he'll pay our Chinese friends a little. But don't think for a minute that these Marxist fucks haven't wargamed this out. They live for chaos and they have been itching for this moment since 1/20/08. What else can explain the complete reversal of Stompy on deal after deal after deal. He wants Thursday to come and go, to see what happens and if chaos begins to emerge, he'll seize the day like all good little Marxist dictators do.

I'm glad we haven't reached the latter and the former remains a possibility. If govt by crisis is the symptom of this divide, so be it

Leadership spent hours asking members what they could and could not support and most members seemed united around the result. Some of the dissatisfied members asked for changes, and changes were made, but obviously not enough for a small but important group of people. Now leadership has to regroup while Reid has McConnell right where he wants him. *** I wonder how often Reid and Pelosi go to their peers and ask for their opinions on any particular proposal. My guess is that, more often than not, they issue an edict and dare anyone to step out of line. And, although I support the DeMint and Heritage, I do not think that fear of the organization should have influenced the vote today. Is there anyone or anything that the GOP in Congress ISN'T afraid of? McConnell is now Reid's bitch.

Really, end times? It's that hard to get professional politicians who've made deals all their lives to make a deal? And, then to claim that Jim DeMint is somehow at fault here for GOP disarray makes me wonder whose trolls we are dealing with this evening. Could it be that McVain staffers have learned the Internet? This idiot who barely can win in Arizona and soundly lost nationally to SCOAMF honestly thinks he has valuable political insight to offer to the country? LOFuckingL

Posted by: MTF at October 15, 2013 03:04 PM (C26bh)

460 There will be a deal cut and the discussion that follows for the next week or two is who were the big winners and big losers politically. In the mean time we keep borrowing and printing trillions, and come January we borrow and print more so the government can write checks to insurance companies.
So to all you people worried we might make some disastrous decision now, how do you think this all plays out in ten years?  If the implications of some political "default" scares you now, you're all going to have to be sedated around the clock in the near future.

Oh gosh!  Where are you looking?  Real estate in WI is pretty decently priced.  You can get a lot for your money, ESPECIALLY if you stay out of college towns and away from Door County.  Don't look in Dane, Milwaukee, or surrounding suburbs and you should be able to find affordable nice homes.  Also don't look in the Lake Geneva area - too high.  I can't think of any other areas offhand that should be out of the way expensive.

497 So the obvious question is then, why not just buy some polls of your own to rally your side? What, Gallup doesn't think Boehner's money is green? I'm going somewhere with this... mostly because I'm sick and tired of fighting this same stupid war that we never win... and I'm saying that they WANT to lose. They never intended on winning, and in fact, aren't allowed to. *** The polls are just one factor, of course. There are other factors at play: narcissism, ideology, cowardice... Politicians have an image to uphold and the GOP seems particularly opposed to looking like the bad guys in any fight. They want to look reasoned and statesmanlike and COMPASSIONATE. The Dems place no such restrictions upon themselves. Republicans, as ATC commented upon earlier, have been called every name in the book. We are anti-kids, anti-women, anti-Earth, anti-old folks, anti-everything and the Dems are pro-everything (except for life, of course). Until the GOP gets its act together and learns how to message and, more importantly, learns to coalesce around a message, they/we are not going to win.

I myself would add a provision that all federal employees and retirees have to be first into the ObamaCare stew pot along with a requirement that all federally registered lobbyists (hello Tom Daschle and Mike Leavitt!) have to sign up as a condition of registration. That's it. Then Congress goes home and cracks open a beer or lights up a bong hit or whatever. TFG will sign that, rather than default, especially since he would intend to defy it anyway. Politics, baby! It's what's for dinner.

Quit worrying about blame. Quit avoiding responsibility. Door County is that little sliver south of Green Bay that sticks out into Lake Michigan.  Kind of the artsy fartsy area of WI.

No, Lake Geneva is southern WI right on the border with Illinois.  It's where the elite Chicago set vacations and has their summer homes.

I am trying to figure out where in Northern WI there would be pricey homes.  It's kind of a wasteland up there.

Which is why I think OFucker is so dug in. He and his band of Merry Marxists know that the sheeple are waking up from their two decades of slumber and they know they need to hasten whatever they fuck they think is going to happen.

Now I'm not in the short term DOOM crowd (but we're long term boned for sure though). But don't think for a minute that they won't unleash the dogs if people start expressing their anger a la the Arab Spring. They want a Tea party spring to erupt. It's in their playbook which has been in every other leftist playbook opened during the past hundred years. They know that the more 404Care infects the average American that their days in power are numbered (peacefully, of course) but that 2014 mid-terms will make 2010 look like t-ball.

I dunno. There's usually a triggering event for those kinds of things, a convergence point (for lack of a better term) that sets such things in motion: an obscure archduke is assassinated, the price of bread shoots up in France, a fanatic with delusions of grandeur raids an armory, a failed Austrian artist discovers a gift for public speaking in a Bavarian beer hall...such occurrences often go unrecognized for what they are at the time. They are very rarely (if ever) 'seriously plotted'.

562 Well, this is really all about BHO. You can blame all the weak-kneed Republicans you want, but they called his bluff, and he is still holding. He wins either way: 1) Obama gets everything he wants in a budget resolution, or else he vetoes it and blames the Republicans. He can get away with this because the 4th Estate is totally behind him, and covers his ass at pretty much every turn. Millions know better, but it's not enough. 2) Obama doesn't get a budget resolution, and exceeds his Constitutional authority and by XO raises the Debt Ceiling, and emasculates Congress some more. And he gets closer to his vision of a totalitarian populist "democratic" President. Where he gets to rule by fiat, on everything. He gets his way no matter what, because he never ever intended to compromise on anything. This Obama feller, he's a bit of a dick. Reminder of where we stand with the popular culture: Tom Hanks is all in for a third term for Obama.

Posted by: pep at October 15, 2013 03:29 PM (6TB1Z)

579 502 I'd put them at roughly 40% but not much higher. There are a substantial number of conservatives who are extremely pissed at the "let it burn" caucus within the House GOP (the 20-30 who scotched tonight's vote) and have no intent on allowing one of them to lead the caucus. The question is whether they can unite around an alternative. I think Cantor vs. Jordan would favor Cantor.

True, but the connections are interesting. Some of these outside conservative groups pushing defund and some writers at two conservative websites are close with that particular group. I also feel this group of lawmakers is partially motivated by their desire to see Boehner resign and they would like to see Jordan to take his place. But accomplishing that goal would not be an easy task, at least not right now.

595 You really need to listen. Obamacare is a massive wealth transfer from flyover states to the bi-coastal regions. It's going to help prop up their socialist agenda. When you consider the California individual insurance is going from 335 to probably 300 a month, states where medical malpractice tort reform is law, the same insurance is going from 185 to closer to 300 a month. This should make people not living in California really really pissed off at Nancy Piglosi and Senator Oy and Senator Vey! Those lovely ladies would like to unleash the Kraken on you once you've been reduced to an empty husk and are of no use to them anymore. With California, you lose. It's as simple as that. Piglosi and the Oy Vey Sisters secured the bacon for their state big time under her reign of fucking terror. If they win in 14, oh my god. This was never about taking from the rich and giving to the poor. It was about taking from the Midlands and giving to the American Riviera and broke union states. With the unions getting their carve out on top, Obama and Piglosi will be legend for California, New York, New Jersey, Nevada and Illinois. They will get their statues.

596 The number of visitors to the federal government’s HealthCare.gov Web site plummeted 88 percent between Oct. 1 and Oct. 13, according to a new analysis of America’s online use, while less than half of 1 percent of the site’s visitors successfully enrolled for health insurance the first week. The new numbers on the Affordable Care Act — released by Kantar US Insights, and based on an assessment conducted by the nonpartisan research firm Millward Brown Digital — provide a snapshot of how the federal health-care exchange has fared since it launched at the start of the month. Based on a sample of two million users — or 1 percent of all online users in the U.S. — which Millward Brown Digital has permission to track, it suggests that the rush of traffic administration officials cited as the cause of the site’s problems trailed off within a matter of days. Well when people find out those new brownies taste like shit and smell like shit also, demand starts to drop.

602 So, as my plans from Blue Cross Blue Shield of IL finally became available a few days ago -- I see that my plan, which I basically have to stick with, now demands that I take on mandatory dental insurance -- something I've never done. I need this, the state says all of a sudden, because I have a minor. So now my insurance that was costing me $370.00 for my child and myself will be $70.00 more per month -- and trust me, I have never needed to spend $820.00 in any year for my teeth or my child's teeth. Aside from the fact that I now have no co-pay (my primary and specialist doctors can now charge me anywhere from $65 to $150.00 for each office visit -- yay me!!!) I am now required, the state says, to purchase dental care or I must show proof of separate dental care insurance. I spoke with the dolts at Blue Cross Blue Shield of IL yesterday and told them I want it taken off and to tell me what the goddam fine is so I know what to expect when the time comes. No one could tell me jack. It was perplexing to them and they had no answer. Any other person on individual health care in IL experience this yet? I hope the goddam healthcare plan dies a fast death by the end of the year. No fucking way in hell am I paying for dental of all things. Let the IRS find me.

There is a surprising amount of real, visceral rage at the Jim Jordan wing of the GOP right now.  Not because they're "too conservative" -- a lot of the people who are pissed are equally if not more conservative than those guys -- but rather because they're seen as palace intriguers who aren't even really that conservative at all so much as they are canny students of branding and how to play to the 'base'.

In fact I've tried to get Gabe to argue some position, ANY position, for the party post-cave and he cannot do it. You know why? Because there isn't one. So, pass a House CR and debt ceiling increase or just pass a debt ceiling increase for six months or so (to take default off the table, to the extant it's a real threat) and keep fighting on the CR issue. I don't want a revolution - I want a new opposition party.

One thing I think everyone will agree is that the GOP has no messaging capability.  We have to get better at getting our message out and influencing public opinion.  As of right now, we are failing at it.

Part of that though is that there's a commitment to be polite on the part of the GOP.  The Democrats are howling in rage and the GOP is talking about wishing to work with them.

The GOP is wrong in how this is perceived - independents hear the media talking about how evil and duplicitous Republicans are, and they hear Democrats talking about how evil and duplicitous Republicans are, and then they hear Republicans...talking about what good people Democrats are and how they want to work with them.

The message to independents is "Democrats are good, Republicans are bad."  It's obvious after the failure of elections since 2006 that this strategy doesn't work.  The set of victories we did get in 2010 were after the TEA party shouted down Democrat congressmen at Townhalls.

I just don't see the GOP leadership changing as it needs to.  Opposition parties need to oppose, not send mail asking for money and promising brutal fights at a future date.

Does anybody really believe the GOP would be behaving differently if it had both Houses of Congress?  If it held the Presidency and House and the majority but not a veto-proof one?

If your plan hinges on us holding a veto-proof majority and the presidency, it's gonna be a long time.  You can't be inert until then - you have to seek the best deal you can get.  Play hardball.

627 I distinctly remember in 2011 and 2012 hearing from folks on this very site that the GOP establishment controlled everything, including picking our candidates. And now they can't even produce a unified message? What happened? *** You are being antagonistic. The GOP establishment has controlled the majority of the messaging, speaking for all Republicans. Unfortunately, it has not been a message that voters have wanted to hear. Successful messaging is more than dissemination. It is also a matter of knowing what the audience wants to hear. And, by that, I don't mean that they pander. I mean that they need to customize their message. One thing that has popped up repeatedly throughout the shutdown and prior has been that the GOP left hand had no idea what the GOP right hand was doing. Voters receive that message by way of a party divide. Cons vs Moderates, etc... It does not inspire confidence. Again, the Dems as a party maintain very tight control of their messaging. They are unified...or so they would have us believe. There are certainly those within the party who would would deviate, but don't dare. There is more to messaging than PR releases. It is an awareness of the image that is projected to the public.

628 Don't worry about a Bam third term. The reason why Lincoln was able to unite a war prosecution party of Dems and the GOP was because for all the talk about his "tyranny", his party had never really done anything outside the rules, or reasonable interpretation. There is a tremendous difference between ordinary people in the present day blanching at the GOP and them being willing to fight tooth and nail for a Democratic Party blank check to rule as they please.

650 Actually, one thing I'm curious of here, a question open to anyone here who cares to answer. My understanding is that conservatives would like the government to be vastly smaller than it is: far fewer welfare policies (talking both in terms of social welfare and corporate welfare), fewer wars (having a powerful military is one thing - but getting involved in the middle east, in Libya, in North Korea, etc is not desired), and so on. For that sort of conservative... isn't the possibility of a federal default, or a damaged view of the American government as a great choice to loan money to, arguably a net plus? I mean, our literally no longer having any money to spend seems like a surefire way to shrink the government. Last I checked, Greece's government was shrunk dramatically. Sure, there's been all kinds of chaos there as a result, not to mention tremendous unemployment. But, no bones about it - Greece has far smaller of a government than they used to. Am I missing something? Do I misunderstand said conservatives? I'm not asking ironically or sarcastically, I'd really like an answer here.

652 "But seriously? C'mon. Of course Obama would have signed this deal if it had passed the GOP House and the Dem Senate to arrive at his desk. What, you think he's going to veto a bipartisan bill and force the nation into default?" I do think Obama would veto such a bill, precisely because he knows that the nation is not at risk of default. Because, while he is a glib and shameless liar, he's not naive enough to actually believe his own nonsense. Unlike, say, you. Of course Obama's been doing this for weeks now. He's just been telling his lackey Reid to block every such possible bill from even coming to a vote in the Senate, so he doesn't have to soil his hands with a veto. I guess he's not all that worried about it. Why should I be? What you do not seem to grasp is that there's simply no scenario where the optics favor Republicans or damage the President or the Democrats. At the same time, I'm forced to recognize... if this whole event were to really end up wrecking the status of the US such that we suddenly found ourselves defaulting, unable to sustain our government obligations... well, you know what? You could have congress and the senate packed to the gills next election, and it wouldn't matter as far as 'small government' is concerned.

662 I would suggest just ignoring John. He already did a cut and paste Leftist screed and tried to pass it off as his own. For all we know it's gerg with a new name. Meh.

664 583 565 Ah it's all worth it because I sit back watch tons of runs being scored in the Baseball Playoffs It's how the game was meant to be played. Posted by: Baseball purist fast asleep by the 5th inning at October 15, 2013 07:25 PM (Dwehj) If MLB wants homers all the times they should just play the game on Little League-sized fields. Same integrity level. Posted by: T. at October 15, 2013 07:29 PM (Y6JQy) Sometimes I wish I lived during the "dead ball era" of the earlier 20th century. The game seemed more chess-like, playing for one base at a time. In those days a power hitter was someone who hit a lit of doubles and triples. Home runs were the rarest of hits, which is how it should be.

666 NDH, "Because WE are not the ones managing the cuts. If you think that for one minute Obama and Reid will not quadruple down on the make-it-hurt meme you are mistaken. They will make the most painful, and visible, cuts imaginable." So? A shrinking government is a shrinking government, period. Do you think that entitlements are going to survive an economic crash? Social welfare? I don't think, at that point, there would be any option to make those cuts anything BUT painful. And really, are you telling me that conservatives (at least of the type I'm talking about) only have painless cuts in mind? That they plan on only trimming, what... the very very unpopular things, not all the POPULAR programs and government expenditures? That doesn't seem right. In fact it seems like said conservatives would love to slice off substantial parts of government, but realize that it's politically not possible. But economic chaos would make it possible I'm not advocating this - I lack the necessary knowledge to say whether it would be a good idea, which is part of the reason I'm asking here. I do admit, in the abstract, there's something hilariously funny to me about Obama spending his last years in office having to oversee practically mandatory austerity measures, taking a sword to government expenses because there's just no other way. If nothing else, you have to admit that would be pretty fucking funny.

668 Dear Members of Congress:

You do not have to eat a plate of shit in public and say it tastes good for me.  You may tell all the voluntary descendents of the slavery party to fuck off and save your self respect without me holding it against you in any way.

Thank you for holding out because of your principles.  It is well past time that someone did and I am glad that you have chosen to do so.

Managing escalating debt problems by accelerating escalating debt is a sure sign of mental illness.  Thank you for refusing to go along silently because someone told you it would be the easy thing to do.

Assuming we don't shatter like a T3000 in liquid nitrogen before then. Oh and even the orneriest teaparty patriot will queue up for the chance to end this by rolling a dial for Christ(ies's) Cross (Cruz). It too cute to not happen. Almost as cute as the Vatican picking a Pope on 3-13-13.

674 Crude, I understand your point, but one does not simply abandon their sick and elderly. Managed cuts, through reforms, eliminating fraud, establishing income guidelines for receiving SS, etc, are what is needed. Your proposal is one of complete chaos and abandonment of principles.

Re: Your Services are No Longer Needed

CC: Jeff, PackSoldier, et. al.

As a Small Government Conservative, I can not help but notice the proclivity of your Party to either piss down your leg or shoot yourself if the dick whenever confronted with a tough fight.

In light of such, when confronted with the Socialist Agenda of running the country off the cliff at full speed, I find your alternative of plunging off said precipice at a safe and sane 45 MPH to be less than comforting.

As a result, I find myself no longer in need of your services as my representation in Federal Government.  To that end, expect your ability to occupy said positions to be greatly limited.  You may find, as cold comfort, that your newfound lack of House and Senate seats to somewhat exempt you from the distasteful task of partaking in said uncomfortable political dustups.

Best of luck in your new obsolescence.

676 NDH, "Crude, I understand your point, but one does not simply abandon their sick and elderly." Hold on. Who said anything about abandoning their sick and elderly? I would never, ever advocate that. But my understanding was that conservatives did not equate 'removing social welfare' with 'abandoning'. They're (let's leave the Randites out of this) in favor of charity, of family responsibility, of a whole lot of things aimed at helping those very people. They simply don't think government is the right way to do it. "Managed cuts, through reforms, eliminating fraud, establishing income guidelines for receiving SS, etc, are what is needed. Your proposal is one of complete chaos and abandonment of principles." I don't have a proposal. I'm a nobody on the internet asking questions. The most I said was, it would be really funny in a certain sense. You don't think it would be funny to watch Obama being the man with the blade in hand when it came to the task of massively downsizing government? I already said flat out I don't have the relevant knowledge to authoritatively push such an option as if it were an informed, reasonable decision. At the same time - do you really think your plan (Managed cuts, through reforms, eliminating fraud, establishing income guidelines) would be sufficient here? And even if they were, do you think there's a snowball's chance in hell of it being done? And no, I don't think what I've said is 'a complete abandonment of principles'. Chaotic, absolutely. But no, you'd be sticking to your small government principles. You can stick to as many principles you like in terms of helping out the less fortunate - you'd just be shifting reliance to private individuals, charitable organizations, neighborhoods and more. Granted, BIG shift. Sudden shift. There would be massive problems, no doubt. But you'd be sticking to a good number of your principles.

678 #663 1. Getting our financial house in order is always an option. It may be politically undo able at a given time but if a party ultimately articulates making it a big deal (which the Repubs aren't good at because they're big spenders too) and people buy into it, it will become possible. 2. We can't stop subjective opinions of what we are but if the JEF unconstitutionally defaulted on the debt, the country objectively would be a deadbeat, ie somebody who doesn't honor his/her financial contractual obligations.

679 Captain Hate, "1. Getting our financial house in order is always an option. It may be politically undo able at a given time but if a party ultimately articulates making it a big deal (which the Repubs aren't good at because they're big spenders too) and people buy into it, it will become possible." We have a speaker of the house who thinks that it's a good idea to get in front of the country's cameras and microphones and rattle off some line about 'if wishes and buts were candies and nuts' like the big, stupid goober he is. I understand that this may always be an option logically, but in practical reality? I just don't see it. How many decades do we need to merely 'articulate' the case and persuade people? "People" meaning, many many people who are goddamn ignorant of their own government. Oh, and also? They have to articulate it with a hostile media, and a massive opposing political party willing to lie about the realities of things. It does not seem practically possible. "2. We can't stop subjective opinions of what we are but if the JEF unconstitutionally defaulted on the debt, the country objectively would be a deadbeat, ie somebody who doesn't honor his/her financial contractual obligations." So? We, objectively, have far more guns and far better gun rights than most of the world too. Objectively, we care more about guns than many other countries. Who cares what they think? And yes, our country would be seen as not honoring its financial and contractual obligations. But who cares? Don't get me wrong: I can think of many reasons why this would affect us as individuals. But you seem to be focused on the perception or the... I don't know, the 'honor' of it all. I don't really care about maintaining the honor of a country that took out more loans than it was reasonably capable of paying, to fund an oversized government that a good portion of the country never wanted to build to begin with. Do most conservatives? Is 'smaller government' seen as a distant second priority to 'looking good to other countries' people'?

Posted by: Crude at October 15, 2013 04:42 PM (grXXA)

680 Honor is an obsolete notion.  It never even existed outside homo sapiens, and clearly has been a failure there.

Posted by: Purp[/i][/b][/u][/s] at October 15, 2013 04:45 PM (l5zzX)

681 I think you're making a mistake by setting priorities for conservatives on honoring contracts versus small government. It's like choosing between breathing and drinking water; one is more immediate than the other but ultimately you have to do both.

Posted by: Captain Hate on his iPhone at October 15, 2013 04:54 PM (rOP9q)

682 CH, "I think you're making a mistake by setting priorities for conservatives on honoring contracts versus small government. It's like choosing between breathing and drinking water; one is more immediate than the other but ultimately you have to do both." Again, I'm not really setting any priorities, or at least I'm not saying 'Here's the clear and obvious solution!' I'm asking questions, and criticizing some replies, while acknowledging some others. I just do not see this argument that we must, do or die, honor our contracts - especially when that means 'Continue to go deeper and deeper and deeper in debt, until we're past the point of no return' (which, according to some people - I have no idea if they're right - we're past already.) You really seem to literally be saying that if we have to choose between paying people for loaning our wasteful and ever-expanding government money, and defaulting and having a smaller government, the former wins every time - not even for practical reasons, but 'out of a sense of honor and duty'. I just don't see it. Part of my reasoning here is, at the end of the day, continuing to feed an ever-growing, ever-expanding government's monetary hunger is the liberals' fundamental priority, not the conservative's - at least in principle. I know in reality there are a lot of 'conservatives' who are more than happy with the government funding things they like, but still. If nothing else you have to admit that, if we do default, if we do sink the country's economy, we're guaranteed a smaller government - regardless of who wins the next election. Or, likely, the next five after that.

SHUT. IT. DOWN. LEAVE. IT. SHUT. DOWN.

I couldn't despise the bastards running this government more than I do. It's not humanly possible. There is literally nothing these government jerks do that I need. Shut the damned thing down until it's a maximum of 50% of its current size and we're running a 25% surplus and then maybe I might think of supporting it again. Maybe.

As for the trolls like packsoldier and John, go screw yourselves. I hope the day comes soon when it's open season on bastards like you. I'd like to see you get schooled by Rule .308.
