BREAKING: Boehner spokesman: House to vote Tuesday night to reopen government and avoid default.
— The Associated Press (@AP) October 15, 2013
And which plan will this be? I don't know, but I think this Costa piece outlines the current shape of things.
The medical device tax repeal is out, due to demands of... Tea Party aligned members, who called the repeal of the tax a sop towards "crony capitalism."
The part about inflicting ObamaCare on government workers is now off the table, except as regards Congressmen themselves. Their staffs shall continue to enjoy a specially created Caste, in which they enjoy special privileges and immunities.
On the other fronts, the majority of the Republican conference is mostly united. They’re okay with extending the debt limit and funding the government, and they like the idea of broader budget talks later this year. The’ve also agreed to tinker with Boener’s proposed dates. Instead of opening the government through early 2014, they’ll do it through December 15, and they’ll exend the debt ceiling through February 7. “This is our plan,” explains a House leadership staffer. “It’s imperfect and small and we want much more, but it’s our plan, not the Senate’s. We think it’s got a pretty good shot.”
I personally think it's folding time. We didn't get the breaks needed to win anything here.

How about they get out there and point out that 'Default' is an impossibility.
Only an (additional) unconstitutional act by the President can invoke default.

Breaks? breaks? WTF do you mean by "breaks"? There were never any "breaks" to be had, Ace.
All of you "if we just fight we can win this thing!" folks were venting your frustrations - I understand that. You wanted some way to win. But there WAS NO WAY to win this. The only option was shutting down the government permanently. But that is stupid. Once the GOP realizes they cannot do that, it is over. It was a stupid tactic right from the beginning.

Nothing. Victory was never possible. And when people tried to warn conservatives that Cruz's strategy was doomed to failure, those folks got called RINOs, and were compared to Nazi collaborators, among other such highlights of political discourse.
This has devastated the entire GOP, our numbers are in the shitter, and we'll have to work overtime just to get the normal off-year gains of the out-party in 2014. But hey, at least Ted Cruz's 2016 campaign got off to a good start, and that's all that really mattered, right?

We need to relentlessly expose all the fuck ups even remotely associated with Obamacare and ensure that people hear that the GOP tried to stop the trainwreck. Instead of continuing the fight I predict they will continue to fold over and over again.
Prediction - The Washington Redskins will end up changing their name. Why? Because leftists never stop fighting for their preferences. Never. We need some of that same tenacity. But we have Graham, McCain, Boehner etc.

The only hope of any kind remaining was short circuiting them before they were ready. A cave now means even that is gone.

You have a valid point. In a fair and just world, the American public would know the GOP, however divided, fought the passage and implementation of the Obamacare ass-rape of the nation with every means at its disposal. But they won't know, just as they don't know that real unemployment has been at or around 14+ percent for the last five years or that over 300 Mexican nationals and two American federal officers are dead as the result of the Fast and Furious operation or that Obama cronies in bogus 'green energy' boondoggles have received hundreds of millions of dollars in tax dollars or that four good men died horribly in Benghazi because both Obama and Hillary Clinton were (justifably) worried about their respective political prospects.
We laugh at low information voters but their ignorance is killing the Republic.

2014 will be strong for Republicans, and in 2016 Biden/Clinton/whoever the fuck will be crushed.
This was all about publicity, about rubbing the faces of the ignorant morons that compose the public in the fact that Republicans think Obamacare is horrible and would do anything short of wrecking the whole state to stop it, but failed. And the Democrats will (hilariously) think they've won. Not only do they own the passage of it, but they fought tooth and fucking nail to preserve it in the face of perfectly reasonable opposition (seriously? The whole program fails to launch, but delaying it is out of the question? idiots).
It's not rocket science. Why do you think Spaghetti Spine Boehner suddenly leaped on-board with Senator Cruz? A bit of theater never hurt anyone.
It amazes me how supposed political junkies who thrive on this stuff utterly fail to see the big picture. Like people who thought that Bush put forth whatshername as Supreme Court Justice because he actually wanted her in the spot.

I've said it across the comments today, but I'll repeat it again:
I'm one of those people opposed to repealing the medical device tax, but not so much because I see it as "crony capitalism" more because I see it as intentionally papering over one bad part of the law to hide it from voters and in doing so create another less visible bad part.
The tax was put in as a way of balancing the CBO numbers. It's unclear if the democrats ever actually intended it to go into effect or if they were going to scrub it, but it seems to me it was a tax that was easy to sell to LIVs (who likely saw it as a way of sticking it to Big Pharma/Big Medicine if they took notice of it at all.)
As things shook out, it clearly is having negative effects and it's gained some notoriety in recent weeks. (Home much is hard for me to tell since I do live in this high-info bubble.)
So the republican plan is to do away with it. And in turn what? Run a deficit? No, that seems wrong. Carrying that logic forward we should just do away with all the stupid taxes the democrats foist upon us to make a happier populace.
Any repeal of the medical device tax needs to be either part of a fuller repeal of Obamacare or at least offset by spending cuts (preferably in Obamacare) otherwise we're just giving the democrats what they need to sell this law, insulation from the bad effects, while keeping the bread and circuses.

I'm a concern-troll, is that it? Have I said a single goddamned thing that isn't true?
How long before every competitive Senate race next year becomes a Democrat running against a "Ted Cruz Republican?" The ads are already being written. If you think I'm bullshitting you, why don't you ask Pat Toomey about ads in the Philadelphia media market linking him to Christine O'Donnell that almost cost him his 2010 race, or nearly every candidate last year who got asked hard questions about whether or not they agree with Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock?

It is hard to admit defeat. But we were fighting a losing battle and we knew it when Ted Cruz started the filibuster. WE KNEW IT WAS NOT A WINNABLE FIGHT! So let's put it away for now.
I was hoping the justness of his cause would rule the day, and the media would at least be fair, but of course that was too much to ask.
Fairness does not exist in America today.
In spite of ourselves... Obamacare is failing and we may well get it repealed.
Hopefully, there will be a fully developed strategy... with fake sadness, to bring along the people in the middle class who are the primary targets of the higher costs... but who didn't realize it until now.
I do not think gloating is going to be useful if we are to reach the important goal of repeal and replace. In fact tact and humility is more important in victory than in defeat.
We are going to remove Obamacare as it stands now. We may not get rid of the name... but it is failing. And we can replace with something much more free market.

There is no shame in fighting and losing. However, it is important to fight. Many battles have been won when reinforcements came to the aid of an overmatched force. But reinforcements will never help post-surrender.
I think the fight, even if we have lost this time, has had a few beneficial effects:
1) It has helped hinder Obamacare from being normalized.
2) It has produced a few moments that have made the administration look extremely petty. Even my liberal friends were saying how ridiculous it was that Obama had closed the national mall.
3) It showed who in the Republican party needs to go.

We don't have another chance to win until 2014. Anything that hurts our chances to take back the Senate in 2014, helps Obamacare.

Stick with ONE simple theme and repeat it relentlessly.
"As the president keeps reminding us, 'he won.' As much as we understand how devastating it will be to America, we cannot stop Obamacare. But we will not allow this president to shield his supporters from the effects the law his party rammed through on a completely partisan vote without even reading it."

Oh, you mean the default that never happened and Republican leadership promised would never happen? Yeah, I totally see that speculative counter-factual swaying the 63% of the people who think Obama sucks and 95% of people who think Congress sucks and 61% of the people who think the federal government has lost the consent of the governed into signing back up for Round 3 of the Great Democratic Crazy-fest of the 2010s.
The biggest past-time among liberals right now is denouncing one another as traitors for daring to suggest that the doubling and tripling of their insurance premiums is a bad thing. Honest liberals now are quietly admitting this is a failed presidency. This will get WAY worse. Wait till the IRS gets involved and people start getting harassed for having not signed up for Obamacare yet. Wait until the new recession kicks in and the next foreign policy crisis is bungled.
And the Democrats own all of it.
But surely, the best thing conservatives can do now is abandon the only opposition party in a fit of pique because they didn't get their structurally meaningless spending cuts or some other sort of catharsis. Throw down your gloves and go home because you didn't get what you wanted right away and you can't see past a two year time-line.

Do you really think the yield on a 20 yr treasury (out past our total and utter inability to control social spending) is 3.5% naturally according to real market forces? It's fake now it can continue to be fake until the powers that be decide to f*ck with it. It's not a credible risk and never was. If it was, it would have already happened.

They are ALL hoping that they themselves do not trigger the crash. They are all hoping someone else does. They can blame someone else. They will be "forced" to do what they do because of the crisis. It will not be their fault. Everyone is hoping the other guy blinks first. they do not want to be the match that starts the fire. Agree with your take but the disagreement over tactics is hot because it's really a disagreement over strategy and purpose.
The Go Along/Win it Next Year crew doesn't want to get into any fights so that they can win elections. The Fight Now/Fight Forever crew wants markers placed on everything in sight so they can make the purpose of the party known.
Problems with both line of thinking; Go Along's ultimate goal is winning elections. Period. If they win they're no more likely to end Obamacare than they were to reform a number of things during Bush.
Fight Now wants the GOP to win battles it hasn't prepared for primarily because the machinery of the GOP vintage 1990's. Not the Fight Now's doing but you can't tell troops to run to a firefight with slingshots and expect a lot of volunteers.
If Go Along doesn't put down some markers, they have no credible narrative for the election. If Fight Now can't get the machinery of the GOP updated and re-organized, all of the battles ahead are only so many loses to be had.

Sure, when the discussion has some possibility of changing the direction our party is taking.
But when caving is a foregone conclusion, yelling and screaming "GO TEAM GO!" seems like the thing to do.
I know that the Republican hierarchy fought more than I expected, but in the end I also expect them to fold.

I think Ted Cruz was very brave. And so was Mike Lee... and they were sent to Congress to do what they did. But it was never going to do anymore than make headlines.
Republicans didn't cave anymore than they had to. We don't run the government. We are the minority. You can't ever get what you want if you are the minority.
Republicans talk about math. Well the "math" says that if we keep fighting other Republicans instead of the Democrats we will never get our country back.
It's math! Do it.

Who is this "our?" Do you really think, after watching the Senate this time around, that if the Republicans pick up 8 seats in the Senate and keep the House, that the Senate will have any will to repeal or defund Obamacare?

No, no he's not. The closest poll has Booker ahead of him by ten points with 53% of the vote.
It will be closer than the pundits initially predicted, I think, which is victory enough in itself. But I'll happily eat my shoe if Lonegan is within 5% of Booker when the votes are counted. And I'll do a naked tap-dance in front of the White House gates if he wins.

Haven't y'all noticed? Conservative political thought is being marginalized. By nature of being conservatives, we are wrong in the eyes of the people who (a) teach our children, (b) write our laws, and (c) bring us our news and entertainment. Subtly, our views are becoming socially unacceptable.
I would challenge anyone who thinks we could have won to answer three questions:
(a) who is "we"? If by "we" you mean the Republican Party, well, that ain't "we", because as we've all seen, the GOP is just as deaf as the Democratic party to the will of the people.
(b) what's winning? Were they really gonna get Harry Reid and Barack Obama to admit they were wrong about Obamacare? Were we going to get folks on MSNBC sitting up and saying "hmm, maybe Ted Cruz is right... are we out of touch?"
(c) Honestly now, when was the last time we saw anyone fight for and attain a conservative goal? Reagan was 30 years ago, and even he didn't do so much (if you want to argue that, look at FDR. 70 years later and we're still saddled with the New Deal. LBJ - 50 years later and the Great Society still reigns. Now tell me what giant paradigmatic shift occurred in the 1980s that has lasted to today. Something the LIVs would know, not something subtle.) Go beyond Reagan. See if you can find a real conservative beside him in the last 100 years.
Sorry for the rant, but I'm tired and heartsick. Oh hell, I'm ALWAYS tired and heartsick lately... but sorry for the rant anyway.

Is there some sort of reality vortex here? "We'll never win because teh MeDiA!1! Damn those Republicans for not winning!"
But seriously, I would LOVE to hear how Obamacare, which was infamously rammed through on a party-line vote, which Republicans have campaigned against for two cycles, which got a Republican Senator elected in fucking Massachusetts, which a very public shutdown fight centered upon, which spectacularly failed to launch in such a way that even Gibbs and Kelin are talking about what an embarrassment it is, is somehow going to be hung around Republicans' necks.

No he isn't. He's much closer than he was, and this is a special election held on a Wednesday, so anything could happen, but this isn't a margin-of-error race.
The only source I've seen to back that up is an internal poll shown to a National Review reporter by Lonegan's campaign, which means absolutely nothing. Booker's ahead by 10 in the most recent public polling.

That's the one unique power a VP has that the president does NOT. The VP can wrest procedural control of Senate business away from obstructionists and force floor votes.

Look at those morons on the Daily Kos. Perhaps there are more conservatives than ever, but you'd never know it. We don't talk in public, we don't advocate like progressives, and we lie back and take it.
So maybe there are many people who consider themselves "conservative" but that can mean any kind of thought from "our government is becoming tyrannical" to "I support fiscal conservatism, but not social conservatism" which is just code for a moderate squish.

I thought you were taking a well deserved vacation this week?
And yes, lets talk. No Rah Rah.
For the last X years, I've watched this country gradually collapse in on itself. For the first time in my life, the government has mandated that I purchase a service for which I might have no need, or that I might not want, (a service they magically find perks, exemptions, and subsidies for themselves), and the SC upheld that law. In order to even be an American citizen now, I have to play ball, or pay a fine/tax.
There's a lot of scorn heaped on Cruz, because he's kicking off his presumed/assumed/suspected '16 presidential campaign. So? Would another McCain, or Romney suit us better? Would another of either of those two stand a better chance at taking the WH in '16? Would another cut from the same cloth rally conservatives, and convince them to get up off their asses, and vote?
I have had enough of the Mr. Politeness Guy candidates, and representatives that grudgingly fight, until the water gets to hot. I want a fucking mongrel mutt that is not afraid to mix it up in a dark alley. For a few days, Republicans pretended to fight. It's not enough. The country as we knew it is forever GONE, defunct, dead and has been for probably 15 years or more. The trajectory is ballistic ruled by cold equations of Newtonian physics, not men.
The faster people realize that, the faster the collapse and reformation will be over with.

Because since Reagan - the Conservative You Never Wanted - you've gave me Bush the Elder (Big Government Guy), Bob Dole (Big Government Guy), Bush the Younger (Big Government Guy), John McCain (Big Government Guy), and Mitt Romney (Big Government Guy).
Because I'm sick of being called a "Wacko-Bird" and "Extremist" as a reward for giving you the 2010 Election.
So - in closing - please accept my cordial invitation to go fuck yourself. And remember one small thing ...
... as you're smugly congratulating yourself for running me off - look around. That House Majority - you wouldn't have it without me. The White House - you can't get it without me. All those Governorships - not without me.
To quote that Old Troubadour George Strait, "There ain't nothing in this house worth fighting over, and we're both tired of fightin' anyway ... so just give it away".
