BOMBSHELL: White House counsel Kathryn Ruemmler Wears Shoes
— JohnE.

***MUST CREDIT THE WASHINGTON POST***

It may say more about Washington than White House counsel Kathryn Ruemmler that sheÂ’s known in the West Wing for her fabulous shoes.

Ruemmler first attracted attention for her glam heels as a Justice Department prosecutor trying Enron executives Ken Lay and Jeffrey Skilling in 2006, when she sported what The Wall Street Journal described as “stunning 4-inch bright pink stiletto spikes.”

A legal affairs blog “Above The Law,” called her a “star litigatrix” as a result. ”Litigatrix indeed,” the blog wrote. “Just because you work for the DOJ doesn’t mean you have to shop at DSW.”

Be sure to read the whole thing. We're through the looking glass here, folks.

38 “Just because you work for the DOJ doesn’t mean you have to shop at DSW.” Yeah, lawyers -- especially government lawyers -- pleading poverty... (a) They make more money than people who have degrees in a field involving some complicated ideas that are difficult for a lawyer to grasp, like computer science or underwater basketweaving. (b) Those student loans? Part of the package for DOJ employees is a generous loan repayment program. (c) This woman makes over $170,000 in salary ALONE to pretend she doesn't tell the president important information. That's not to mention the vast array of benefits she gets and the corrupt K-street job that she'll get in a few years. I guess the WaPo is deciding to go with the Daily Mail model. Here's the thing: The Daily Mail actually has news among its silly celebrity gossip.

Brothers-in-Arms. They never got to be husbands, or fathers, they didn't get to finish their schooling, or enjoy grandchildren. They didn't want to be there, but by dint of choice or selection, they were, and they did their very best to do their job. I remember them all as young men, not much more than boys. Can't say more then that, except that I won't ever forget them. Crap..., it gets to me.

"The race for the House was even more of a family affair. Toppled dictator Ferdinand Marcos’ widow was expected to keep her seat as a representative for Ilocos Norte province, her husband’s birthplace, where the locals kept electing the Marcoses despite allegations of corruption and abuse during their long rule. Imelda Marcos’ daughter Imee was seeking re-election as governor and her son, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., is already a senator."

Now he's disrespecting another commenter's wife. How is that ok? He doesn't know her, or the work she does. Only her profession. Unfortunately, we mostly only hear about the real jackasses because those are the ones who make news. What about the rest who do good work? I've known several, the best of which got my children back from my ex who had kidnapped them. I have a slightly different outlook on them that doesn't let me paint with such a broad hate-brush.

155 AmishDude hates lawyers. Seems like he always has, certainly since several years ago when I first started reading here. I figure he got dumped by one, screwed over by one, or didn't get into law school. In 2008, a man named Barack Obama ran for president. His credential -- his sole credential -- was having graduated from Harvard Law School and having been elected president of the Harvard Law Review, a job for which he apparently had no duties. I was astounded at how deferential people were to this credential. I knew law school graduates. Even went to high school with a future HLS grad (an ordinary public school, BTW). I was not impressed. I remember that Hillary Clinton was not derided as an imbecile after she'd said that math was too hard for her. If anyone were to say that about any other major field of study, he or she would be rightly derided as intellectually lacking. Then I began to discover that lawyers were all throughout our government, holding positions for which a law degree would not be any serious credential except that it provides enough contacts and connections to get somewhere. Witness Jamie Gorelick's job with Fannie Mae. She had absolutely no knowledge or experience with finance, but there she was, partially running the place. The elite law schools are, to me, the cause of the problem that Ace has talked about (but he has not blamed the law schools) and that is one of an American elite class. They form a clique in which they know each other, support each other and increasingly exclude non-lawyers by their stranglehold on a full third of government. If you want an example, look at how Andrew J. McCarthy, a stalwart on Islamic terror and generally a warrior of the Right, bent over backwards in his deference of the corrupt prosecutor -- his friend -- Patrick Fitzgerald. I am also concerned at the legalistic view of politics and public policy. "A judge said..." as if that settles the issue. Reams and reams of laws that do nothing more than make rich lawyers richer. I don't mind if lawyers know their place and realize that if we have a system in which having a "good lawyer" is important, then justice is not being served. Lawyerbot 3000 should be sufficient to ensure justice is done, instead it's about loopholes and special perks -- all provided by our legions of lawyer-legislators. Apparently, if you're not a mathematician, you're nobody. I reject the idea of universal credentials in the modern era of exponentially-growing information, but if we must have a universal credential, if we must have a philosopher-king...well, he should at least have proven that he can write a proof.

171 but if we must have a universal credential, if we must have a philosopher-king...well, he should at least have proven that he can write a proof AD, I agree with about 99% of what you post. But lawyers have always been your blind spot. We all have a fatal blind spot - that one is yours. The belief that everyone (especially lawyers) who isn't a mathematician is somehow intellectually deficient is where you're coming down. Lawyers happen to be a fat target, but you're pretty much saying that if you don't have an advanced degree in math or physics, you're not all that bright. A position, which I note, is amazingly self-flattering. I personally know 3 PhD mathematicians. Two of the three are social misfits who can't write a coherrent paragraph. Should I be making some general assumptions from that too? Oh, and I'm not a lawyer, not do I play one on TV.

177 AD, I think we can all say, with a few notable exceptions, that we all hate lawyers-turned-politicians. But lawyers are a lot like guns, just as the only thing that will effectively deal with a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun, the only way to deal with bad laws and lawyers is with GOOD lawyers. And they do exist.

180 But his constant expression of hatred for them borders on some sort of mental disorder. Possibly. Mental disorders are a feature, not a bug, in my field. Now he's disrespecting another commenter's wife. How is that ok? He doesn't know her, or the work she does. Only her profession. I didn't bring her up. I'm sure she does fine work but to me, it's akin to a CPA. What about the rest who do good work? They don't get to work for Fannie Mae. The problem isn't lawyers themselves, but (a) the elevated status that elite lawyers give themselves -- they're not a big deal; (b) the extreme litigiousness of our society -- look on Twitchy for "Proposition 65, USS Iowa" for a typical example; and (c) the use of the law degree as a universal credential. Look, you'd have the right to bitch about mathematicians if our government were made of the Legislative, Executive and Mathematical branches. We don't even get intellectual property protection. I've known several, the best of which got my children back from my ex who had kidnapped them. And, yet, why did you need your lawyer? Because there was another lawyer (at least one) in the picture against whom you were fighting.

182 The problem with lawyers is    the    same    problem with teachers:   there are too damn many of them, and a significant number of them aren't worth a damn.

A good lawyer, like a good teacher, is worth his or her weight in gold.   The problem with lawyers today is that,   for years,    the symbol of wealth and success has been    the legal profession.   In movies,   on TV, in books, the quickest way to identify a character as smart and successful is to mention that he or she received a     JD,  preferably from Harvard or Yale.      The instant image this conjures in the average audience member's mind is of a well-dressed individual with a large house or a swanky uptown Manhattan apartment, who drives a Mercedes or a Porsche, and makes six figures a year, starting at $200K and moving up    the pay scale from there.

"Want to get rich," the average audience member internalizes, "become a lawyer."

This is    one reason     why law schools are running into so much difficulty these days.  EVERYONE who wants a shot at the ivory tower has had it beaten into their skulls that the easiest (for a given level of easy) way to get there is to become a lawyer.  It doesn't involve any math like rocket science, and there's no blood like brain surgery, and anyone who's ever had to go through a lawyer for ANYTHING knows that they    charge-by-the-hour,   and that those bills pile up fast.    Couple that with everyone's tendency to be an armchair attorney -- "Of COURSE that guy's guilty!  Just look at his face!" -- and you've got a pretty potent mix of self-delusion and dreams of grandeur.

Then you throw in the lowered standards that law schools have introduced in recent years, in order to bring in more students and thus more tuition money, and... well...   You end up with what we've got now.

I always    mention    that     I remember the posters tacked up around my high school and all over the guidance office:   "Touch the future - be a teacher!"   or  "Teachers make tomorrow."   Kids     got it in their heads that   becoming a teacher meant instant   employment, and how hard could it really be?   So you get a bunch of teachers who became teachers solely     for the paycheck,    and who hate their jobs with a passion.   But who's going to give up a union-secure job with great benefits?  No one, that's who.   And thus the teaching pool is degraded.

The same goes for lawyers.   Those who actually managed to get through law school and pass the bar are going to find themselves in a saturated market, trying to navigate the labyrinth of ever-changing laws, and more often than not fucking things up royally.   So they hate their job, but they dropped so much money on the education that they have to keep working at it just to pay down their loan debt.   And thus the lawyer pool is degraded.

Except for those lawyers who go on to politics.   THOSE lawyers    are an entirely different story.

191 Actually, the time my ex kidnapped the kids, there was no other lawyer involved. It was just him being a dick. It was only after he proved that he was not willing to work through the divorce and custody agreement in good faith that I obtained a lawyer. I simply did not want to go it alone with so much at stake. Btw, this was in California. They seem to be really into fathers' rights, even if the father is abusive (which he became over the TWO YEARS it took to get things settled). I never would have had to go so far in a state like Texas. He would've been in jail for non-payment of support before he could've caused so much trouble. And yes, I do realize that much of California's problems are due to lawyers. I did not say they were all good or useful, just that some of them are.

According to a survey of George Washington University professors, some 30 percent generally endorse the eventual addition of President Barack ObamaÂ’s face to the Mount Rushmore National Memorial.

The survey, conducted and reported by The College Fix, is hampered by an extremely limited sample size. Nonetheless, the results are fascinating. Of the 10 history and political science profs queried, three suggested that Obama may eventually be added to the huge sculpture of four enormous presidential heads carved into the granite face of a mountain in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Professor Paul Wahlbeck, who chairs the political science department at GW, apparently believes that Obama could become some sort of affirmative-action addition to the monument.

“History undoubtedly will accord President Obama a special place by virtue of being the first African-American President,” Wahlbeck told The College Fix via email.

(By the way, 30 percent of ten people asked. This is like those bits you heard about "97 percent of climate scientists agree...")

You made it through a gauntlet (although you should have taken a proof course, will change your whole perspective) and it's one that someone who would consider themselves educated ought to do. 237 I worked for a railroad for nearly 20 years and one of the sayings there was "Chickens' gotta eat".

Even when the economy is down, people still eat chicken and eggs, and those chickens need grain. It's a good line of business.

Strange.  My uncle (dad's brother) was a locomotive engineer for  Santa Fe for 40 years.  Tried to get me to join the railroad when I got back from Vietnam.  I wish I had now.  I love  everything about railroads.

BUT, at the time,  I was young and  had other aspirations.

Being in the field is probably a bit better but it is tough to navigate. Fortunately, they pay really well and have terrific benefits in exchange for the B.S.

240 Heh. Good call. Not hard. If you can picture things in 3D (and draw them) then multivariable calculus is pretty easy if you've internalized the previous work. DiffEq is algebraic and rather formulaic, so if you're good at algebra, you'll find that to be easier. The thing that kills most students is sequences and series, which I could never relate to.

242 Would it be rude to add the [sic] at this point? I'm sorry, I am laughing a little. It's the iron rule of the Internet, you forgive all grammar except in a critique of grammar. No, you'd be a dick. Because I wasn't critiquing your grammar.

244 While a Senate report detailing AppleÂ’s aggressive tax sheltering of billions of dollars of overseas income grabbed headlines this week, Â…the American drug maker Actavis announced that it would spend $5 billion to acquire Warner Chilcott, an Irish pharmaceuticals company less than half its size. Buried in the fifth paragraph of the release was the curious tidbit that the new company would be incorporated in Ireland, even though the far larger acquirer was based in Parsippany, N.J. The reason? By escaping American shores, Actavis expects to reduce its effective tax rate from about 28 percent to 17 percent, a potential savings of tens of millions of dollars per year for the company and a still larger hit to the United States Treasury.

... and who says Apple doesn't still have a leadership position ?

247 193 "If you want a vision of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face - forever." 249 Trust me to be late to the lawyer-fight. Lawyers write the laws, enforce the laws in court, judge the cases, and get to charge both sides in almost every dispute. The only reason there aren't daily exposes of billionaire lawyers is because you'd get sued if you did it. Society has become one vast wealth transfer from everyone else to lawyers. And the only reason lawyers get the money they do is because other lawyers can destroy your life and take everything you have with little or no notice. Dead serious, I think dueling would be less damaging to society. Still terrible, though, just less.

Its reciprocal Alinsky.

They are trying to personalize her.

Their strategy is to take an attractive youngish woman, who is photogenic and make her the target. So her attackers will look like wolves attacking a helpwess wittle wamb in faaaabulish shoes.

THUS the LIV's will be confused, and minimize the damage to democrats in next elections. QED.

252 Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith's Other Mobile at May 27, 2013 04:37 PM (qyfb5) Your description sounds like the IRS. Fortunately, most times people can choose who their attorney will be. I wonder if the founding fathers could ever have envisioned such corrupt systems both fiscally and morally. They assumed a nation under God would have individuals who had a moral compass and were God fearing and would do the right thing. They never could have imagined that character, integrity, honesty and just doing right by another human being would ever stop being prized in this country. They aren't just turning over in their graves, by this point, they must literally be spinning.
