It may say more about Washington than White House counsel Kathryn Ruemmler that she’s known in the West Wing for her fabulous shoes.Be sure to read the whole thing. We're through the looking glass here, folks.Ruemmler first attracted attention for her glam heels as a Justice Department prosecutor trying Enron executives Ken Lay and Jeffrey Skilling in 2006, when she sported what The Wall Street Journal described as “stunning 4-inch bright pink stiletto spikes.”
A legal affairs blog “Above The Law,” called her a “star litigatrix” as a result. ”Litigatrix indeed,” the blog wrote. “Just because you work for the DOJ doesn’t mean you have to shop at DSW.”

the WaPo article is meaningless without pictures of the shoes. Obviously the White House agreed because they didn't provide pictures of her shoes. Which just shows how stupid the article was. What ding-a-ling OK'd it to run?

Brothers-in-Arms. They never got to be husbands, or fathers, they didn't get to finish their schooling, or enjoy grandchildren. They didn't want to be there, but by dint of choice or selection, they were, and they did their very best to do their job. I remember them all as young men, not much more than boys. Can't say more then that, except that I won't ever forget them. Crap..., it gets to me.

"Another Imelda Marcos.
And, we know how that ended... "
Look again.
"The race for the House was even more of a family affair. Toppled dictator Ferdinand Marcos’ widow was expected to keep her seat as a representative for Ilocos Norte province, her husband’s birthplace, where the locals kept electing the Marcoses despite allegations of corruption and abuse during their long rule. Imelda Marcos’ daughter Imee was seeking re-election as governor and her son, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., is already a senator."

A good lawyer, like a good teacher, is worth his or her weight in gold. The problem with lawyers today is that, for years, the symbol of wealth and success has been the legal profession. In movies, on TV, in books, the quickest way to identify a character as smart and successful is to mention that he or she received a JD, preferably from Harvard or Yale. The instant image this conjures in the average audience member's mind is of a well-dressed individual with a large house or a swanky uptown Manhattan apartment, who drives a Mercedes or a Porsche, and makes six figures a year, starting at $200K and moving up the pay scale from there.
"Want to get rich," the average audience member internalizes, "become a lawyer."
This is one reason why law schools are running into so much difficulty these days. EVERYONE who wants a shot at the ivory tower has had it beaten into their skulls that the easiest (for a given level of easy) way to get there is to become a lawyer. It doesn't involve any math like rocket science, and there's no blood like brain surgery, and anyone who's ever had to go through a lawyer for ANYTHING knows that they charge-by-the-hour, and that those bills pile up fast. Couple that with everyone's tendency to be an armchair attorney -- "Of COURSE that guy's guilty! Just look at his face!" -- and you've got a pretty potent mix of self-delusion and dreams of grandeur.
Then you throw in the lowered standards that law schools have introduced in recent years, in order to bring in more students and thus more tuition money, and... well... You end up with what we've got now.
I always mention that I remember the posters tacked up around my high school and all over the guidance office: "Touch the future - be a teacher!" or "Teachers make tomorrow." Kids got it in their heads that becoming a teacher meant instant employment, and how hard could it really be? So you get a bunch of teachers who became teachers solely for the paycheck, and who hate their jobs with a passion. But who's going to give up a union-secure job with great benefits? No one, that's who. And thus the teaching pool is degraded.
The same goes for lawyers. Those who actually managed to get through law school and pass the bar are going to find themselves in a saturated market, trying to navigate the labyrinth of ever-changing laws, and more often than not fucking things up royally. So they hate their job, but they dropped so much money on the education that they have to keep working at it just to pay down their loan debt. And thus the lawyer pool is degraded.
Except for those lawyers who go on to politics. THOSE lawyers are an entirely different story.

Absolutely. A beloved cat should only be used to hit a politician or a bureaucrat.
Unless you loved the cat dearly and the cat had expressed in life an absolute hatred of lawyers. Then swing away.

In the absence of a cat, a bat is more than sufficient. For many it would be preferred, since the reusability is higher.

Well shoot! After reading this in depth, hard hitting piece of journalism from TWP, I am convinced that Ms. Ruemmler is eminently qualified to be WH Counsel. Nothing screams smart and capable like 4" Jimmy Choo stiletto heels paired with a sensible pantsuit.
In other news, rumor has it Scarlett Johanssen is being slated to portray Hillary Clinton in the upcoming Clinton biopic. With this kind of casting, I'm sure everything in the movie will be true and factual.

you're pretty much saying that if you don't have an advanced degree in math or physics, you're not all that bright.
No, it's just that you wouldn't be able to tell.
Ahem. My advanced degree is in English. The only undergrad math course in which I did not get an A was Multivariable Calculus--I got a C+ in that, and that was only because my Physics for Science Majors prof (in whose classes I got a B+ and an A, respectively) explained the concepts better than my bitterly-nearing-retirement calculus prof, who would not teach. I took comfort in knowing that my grandfather the aerospace engineer had gotten a D in Partial Differential Equations (in which I went on to get an A).
All an advanced STEM degree means is that you're willing to put up with a PhD Comics kind of world long enough to get the piece of paper.

Red paint with Arabic writing and the word "ISLAM" in big red letters written over the Animals at War monument, which is my FAVORITE piece of public sculpture in London except for the King Richard the Lion Heart statue (which they had better guard as those Muslims hat him as a Crusader).
Daggone it! This just infuriates me! Plus the vandalism isn't labeled as done by Muslims when it is obvious.
I am just about to spit nails!!

According to a survey of George Washington University professors, some 30 percent generally endorse the eventual addition of President Barack ObamaÂ’s face to the Mount Rushmore National Memorial.
The survey, conducted and reported by The College Fix, is hampered by an extremely limited sample size. Nonetheless, the results are fascinating. Of the 10 history and political science profs queried, three suggested that Obama may eventually be added to the huge sculpture of four enormous presidential heads carved into the granite face of a mountain in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
Professor Paul Wahlbeck, who chairs the political science department at GW, apparently believes that Obama could become some sort of affirmative-action addition to the monument.
“History undoubtedly will accord President Obama a special place by virtue of being the first African-American President,” Wahlbeck told The College Fix via email.
(By the way, 30 percent of ten people asked. This is like those bits you heard about "97 percent of climate scientists agree...")
