Book Recommendation: The Monster of Florence
— Ace

I'm halfway through this great true-crime book, which I finally began reading after having had it recommended to me a half-dozen times.

It's really great. The murders themselves -- which took place between 1974 (or maybe 1968, sort of) and 1985 -- are actually the least interesting part of the book. Despite those murders being particularly depraved-- the Monster of Florence is Italy's own Jack the Ripper. His MO is to ambush couples having sex in lovers lane, shoot both of them in the head with a .22, then drag the female body out into a clearing and sexually dismember her.

That's the least interesting part. I don't find psychopaths interesting. They're all the same impotent, inadequate, failed dullard, doing the same goddamn things to compensate for their sexual problems.

But more interesting is... well, everything. For one thing, the book's a solid travelogue about Florence and its environs. The history of the city is briefly digested, from its role in basically giving birth to the Renaissance to also giving birth to a violent backlash against the Renaissance.

And then there's the weird subcultures. Here's an example: When I first started reading I wondered, "How the heck can he find so many people (he killed 14, seven different couples) having sex in cars?" Well, there's an answer to that. In Florence, children -- adult children, I mean -- continue living with their parents until they're married. And they marry late. So there is a long period, say from age 17 to 27, when adults have no place of their own, and no sexual privacy, but are still, as you'd imagine, having sex. So it's a widespread tradition that dates -- even among engaged persons -- will end parking on country roads and having sex.

Now, because of this custom of illicit activity in the country, another custom has become widespread: The "Indiana," "Indians" they're called in Italian, who creep quietly around in the night to... watch all the young people having sex in cars. These "Indiana" actually know each other and have dinner before their nightly outings, to talk about any sightings of "good cars" (cars where the more attractive women are having the more athletic sex) and share information about the best places to peep.

And finally, this illicit activity leads to a third one: There are also a group of people who follow the Indiana, in order to rob them of money and cameras, and also to take pictures of them, in order to blackmail them for cash. (Give me money, or I send this picture of you peeping to your wife or mother or the local police chief.)

And this is all going on in the quiet hills surrounding Florence, a city with the reputation of being a sleepy, boring backwater with a glorious past but noting going on in the present -- more or less a Museum City where nothing happens anymore.

So it's in this strange sexual ecosystem that the Monster pads around, murdering people.

And it just gets more and more interesting. Italy's a lovely place, but take this advice: Never be accused of committing a serious crime there. I'm not saying don't commit a serious crime; chances are, you'd get away with it. I'm saying don't be accused of committing a serious crime, especially if you're innocent, because that's when the Italian justice system seems to go into Berserker Mode to convict you. The clownshow of Italian justice is jaw-slackening stuff.

Add into that the medieval -- if that -- banditry of the Sardinian mountain clans and a local populace absolutely terrified of an audacious murderer that simply cannot be found, and the panics and paranoias that grip the area and DAs and head detectives who rely on the theories of shrieky, conspiratorial bloggers, pushing bizarre theories about aristocrats and doctors in Satanic Cults trading in female sexual organs (because the most psychic energy is contained in sexual organs from people killed at the point of orgasm, you know.... didn't you know that? I thought everyone knew that).

I'm only halfway through and I haven't even gotten to the good stuff yet. (The authors may or may not be threatened to be jailed unless they leave Italy and/or actually thrown in jail for daring to report on this insanity... by the DA pushing the Satanic Sex Cult Genital Trafficking theory of the case.)

Really a great book. I know that Preston and Spezi propose a suspect at the end, and I'm prepared to call bullshit on it (if he's guilty, why isn't he in jail?-- surely the Italians wouldn't mind convicting a guilty person every now and again), but I don't even care that the case is unsolved so I won't have any actual resolution about the mystery. The story itself is enough, even without an ending.

If You Don't Want To Buy The Book... Douglas Preston, the author here, wrote up an article about the crimes for The Atlantic.

I'd still recommend the book, wholeheartedly, but if you want to get a gist of it all then you can read this article for free. I sort of don't want to read the article because, spoilers.

Florence is a very interesting city.  It's got elements from Rome's pagan past all the way up through the Renaissance.  You have all this pagan statuary coexisting alongside statues and friezes of early Christendom.  Amazing that it survived.

The camel-jockeys would  have razed it all to the ground.

They are the outliers of so called "normal" society. Beneath the surface we all face the Monsters on Maple street. Knowing how those broken souls think and act allows for a much deeper insight into our friends and neighbors who limit themselves with the tissue paper constraints of society. The Caribbean island of St. Maarten has this issue as well.  Down there, they're called "bush whackers" because they like to creep around the bushes near the topless/nude beaches and rub one out.  The Dutch side has a lot of crime, compared to the northern French side.  It is not advisable for women to be out alone during the night or even by themselves at a secluded beach during the daytime.

Yes.  Princess Juliana International.

The big ass 747's and Airbuses come in about 10' off the ground to make the landing.  There is a beach bar on the other side of the runway with signs telling patrons not to cross when a flight is coming in or taking off.

We were on the Costa del Sol years ago when our son was a pre-teen.  The beach to the left of the hotel was all nude.  To the right was clothed.  Kid got one glance of the flesh on the nude beach (hairy, chubby guys and overweight women) and declared, "Spain is gross!"

The pool area, however, was full of pretty young things sunbathing topless.  I had to instruct the boy that staring was rude.  He stood in the pool staring at the bottom.  Lol.

Wish I could afford to get it through your amazon store, but right now gonna have to get it for free at the library. see also the link at the end, to a free article about the murders, by the same author. actually just one of the two authors, though I'm sure most of preston's story comes from spezi. (Spezi was the local paper's "Monsterologist" and was pretty much the nation's go-to reporter on the story; he was as close to the story as any cop. Closer, actually, as most of them got transfered on or off of the case, and he stayed on it all the way through.)

In St. Barths, the runway is on the reverse side of a hill/mountain.  The pilot has to fly over the peak, then immediately nose-dive to make the landing, or else he goes into the water at the end of the runway.  If you hate flying, this is the absolute nightmare stuff!  When you leave the island, the plane leaves over the beach area.  There are signs with huge warnings in French and English to be cautious around the end of the runway when planes are about.  A few years ago, I remember hearing about a tourist who wandered onto the runway when a plane was taking off because he wanted to get some awesome pictures.  The landing gear of the plane clipped his head during takeoff.  He died during the airlift to St. Maarten, fifteen minutes away.

173 I can't think of any caught lover's-lane shooters. Seems easy to get away with. So maybe (very small "maybe" here) they're fascinating dudes.

Not many violent criminals proceed sanely (sanely enough to sustain a long series of prominent unsolved crimes, I mean), and not many serial killers are very concerned about evading capture (often the opposite), but if a guy was trying to rationally balance his continuing freedom with also doing some horrible the-legend-will-never-die type crimes, this Zodiac/Phantom/Monster kind of thing might be the vocation for him.

So, he wouldn't have many traditional Loser-style movie-serial-killer/useless-FBI-profile characteristics. Maybe none.

And maybe HE'S IN THIS THEATER RIGHT NOW

I have not heard good things about used Audis. I'm on a Buick forum and couple people there were having nightmare issues.

One issue was that they needed repair way eralier than they should. Then what might be a 3-5k repair for a different car was 8-12k for the Audis.

Ace, in light of the last couple posts about the rioting anarchists, if you are looking for a good historical fiction book, I recommend "The Cypresses Believe in God":
http://tinyurl.com/dxkcgyy

It is a book about a typical kid in a typical, mid-size Spanish town during the Spanish Civil War.  This war is considered to be the perfect microcosm of the struggles of the 20th century.  It is also one of the least studied events in 20th century history, unfortunately.

If you are looking to read something about a period of time that will blow your mind, check out this book.  The parallels between what happened leading up to, and then during, the Spanish Civil War and where we find ourselves today are uncanny.

185 Not by herself, with a group of about 8, all art historians, archaeologists, anthropologists. One of the women in the group is an Indian-born American woman who has done most of the logistical work putting the itinerary together. They've been trying to do the trip for years, and are dead set on going. They'll be staying in Western chain hotels and have professional guide service, but that's cold comfort in a place like Mumbai.

There was a double homicide case in TN a few years ago.  Instapundit, who lives in TN, blogged about this a lot.  A young white couple was out in lover's lane, and they get jumped by a group of black miscreants, both male and female.  The white couple are sexually tortured and murdered.  I think there was a push to label this a hate crime because one of the murders admitted something about "getting white people", but it was knocked down.  I can't remember the names or how it all turned out.

Don't know if you've read it Ace, but the japanese comic strip Hetalia is a hysterical, satirical look at international relations, especially around WW2, and its favorite punching bag is modern day Italy. 216 that was the knoxville massacre -- it wasn't a lover's lane situation. the black thugs carjacked a young white college couple, took them back to their place and raped and tortured them for days. They explicitly chose a young white couple with that preppy fraternity-sorority look because they wanted to destroy something white and beautiful to punish white America. Their baby mamas made them pancakes to keep up their energy during the raping and torturing. The media suppressed the story. One of the worst race hate crimes in decades. They raped them every way it's possible to rape another human being, both the guy and the girl. They punctured their colons with various objects. At the end they poured bleach down her throat while she was still alive in an attempt to destroy DNA evidence. and they set the guy on fire in their backyard. Incredibly evil. If the races were reversed we'd know the killers names and Obama would hold a rally on the anniversary of the massacre. But they were a young white college couple with everything to look forward to -- so the media suppressed the story.

223 The prosecutor that tried to arrest Preston and his co author for being part of the Satanic Death Orgy Murder cult was the same one behind the Amanda Knox prosecution- also for being part of a Satanic Death Orgy Murder cult.

Oh, and the key piece of evidence that convicted Knox was a knife found at her boyfriend's apartment with a speck of the roommate's blood on the tip (despite the fact that even the prosecution acknowledged that the knife was not a match for any of the stab wounds). Knox got a acquitted when it turned out that the "blood" on the knife did not belong to the roommate, and was not even blood at all. It was vegetable starch. Yup, the area's lead forensic investigator was too incompetent to tell the difference between human blood and a goddamn vegetable.

By the way, Italy is also the country that sent 6 seismologists to jail on manslaughter charges for "failing to predict an earthquake". Which is actually fucking impossible to do with current technology.

Italy has got to have the most backwoods, medieval justice system in the western world. Even if you're somehow found not guilty of whatever bullshit charge they decide to throw at you, you still spend half a decade in jail. If you ever visit, I suggest making sure you have an airtight alibi at all times.

I found this on Amazon.....where you can buy the book.

In 2006, HarperCollins announced the publication of a book in which O.J. Simpson told how he hypothetically would have committed the murders. In response to public outrage that Simpson stood to profit from these crimes, HarperCollins canceled the book. A Florida bankruptcy court awarded the rights to the Goldmans in August 2007 to satisfy the civil judgment in part. The Goldman family views the book as his confession, and has worked hard to ensure that the public will read this book and learn the truth. This is O.J. Simpson's original manuscript, approved by him, with up to 14,000 words of additional key commentary.

Buicks? I've had 3, down to my last one.

1968 Buick GS 350 (Skylark) currently restoring with my father. Turns out it's one of his favorite cars. Darned genetics.

247 I have a good friend who bought a 2010 Audi Q5 used--about 48,000 miles on it.  He and his wife love it.  They actually were there at the Audi dealership when the guy traded it in for a Q8 because his wife had twins and they needed a bigger SUV.  He said that the guy reported no trouble with it.

That is all I know about Audis.  I am driving my fifth Lexus (husband had two RX SUVS before he died and I am on my third GS)...absolutely trouble free cars/SUVs.  As a widow, a worry free car is a good thing.

re: that CA baby vid

This is a big part of the reason I have a low opinion of Fox News -- because they have a low opinion of me.

Their entire programming is designed to push our buttons. They put on a show to play on our ideological emotions. When I realized this, I saw how insincere they really are.

252 >>> I believe he discussed the case as part of the Amanda Knox trial post. yeah, what happened is that Preston kept coming up, and I read about his conclusions on the Knox case, him citing his own experiences with the Prosecutor and Detective, and the Monster of Florence kept being referenced, but i had not then read the actual Monster of Florence book. I'm just starting the part where he gets into the shit with these guys.

Adjoran, that Diane Sawyer/Amanda Knox informercial aired by ABC didn't convince you she's as innocent as a lamb?

Or at least convince you to buy her book??

254 That '68 Skylark restore sounds like fun.  I had a great aunt that had one.. beige it was.  She hardly ever drove it.  When she was put in a home in '82 the family asked if any us wanted to buy it.  I was in college and had zero money and had to pass.   That's how it goes..   Good luck on the restore!

255 >>>Sounds like you are buying into the "innocence of Amanda Knox" meme. there's nothing to buy into. She's 100% innocent. You do know they caught and convicted the actual murderer, right? The thief who breaks into homes and is too grabby with girls and who threatens people with a knife just the size of the one which killed Meredith Kercher, right? You know he confessed to being there and all that? You know when he spoke to friends about being there he never mentioned Amanda Knox, but claimed some Italian male had killed Kercher, and then laughed at him, saying "Black man found at crime scene, black man guilty"? And such laughable claims as that? And you know his DNA and blood and fingerprints were found all over the apartment and inside Meredith Kercher? So assuming you know all that, I'm just a little curious why you believe Amanda Knox's presence is required in this rather simple tale of a drug-dealer/thief/drifter with a crush on Meredith Kercher and a history of breaking into apartments armed with a knife and threatening the owners with that knife raping the girl he had a crush on and then killing her? Oh yeah -- he also admitted fooling around with her too, that night, sexually, again, to a friend, not even a cop. Trying to explain why maybe some of his DNA just might turn up inside of her. Please explain to me why I need this ridiculous, baroque Satanic Sex Ritual explanation to explain what happened to Meredith Kercher.

Can you explain why the Kercher family is still not satisfied and why they still maintain Knox was involved?

It occurred to me that Kercher's sister heard things about Amanda Knox from her sister and perhaps knows the 'real Amanda' and how she behaved in Italy.

261 The only difference between what actually happened and what the hysterics who want to blame This Whorish Young American Girl (who's not a whore, btw) want to claim happened is this: The logical story of the crime is just that a drifter with a knife and a crush on Meredith Kercher broke into her home to steal her money and then, being surprised by her when she came home unexpectedly (she did in fact retire early that night), proceeded to rape and kill her. The Amanda-Knox-Is-A-Whore people admit that's what happened, mostly. That Rudy Guede, the black street-person with a knife, was there and so on. I mean, his blood is all over the place, and skin cells with his DNA are inside Kercher's vagina. The only difference is that those hysterics claim, for no particularly good reason, that Amanda Knox and her boyfriend "recruited" this black street person to do the crime because they had some kind of Satantic Sex Orgy fetish. None of this makes sense. I'm going to say something a bit bad about human nature: People usually do not date too far outside their race and class. Now, sometimes someone will date outside their race-- but still, not outside their class. Or the other way around. But not both. A middle-class, educated white girl, and her upper class, Richy-Rich white boyfriend, do not fucking recruit a penniless black jobless soon-to-be-homeless drifter/drug-dealer/thief into their Kinky Sex Games. It doesn't fucking happen. These people were not social peers. Rudy Guede is not in their social group. He's just not. He's a criminal and he's dirt poor, and he also lies a lot (like claiming to be American, despite having very poor English). He is also a well-known "botherer" of girls, one of those guys who gets into a night club and keeps pestering a girl for sex or a date no matter how many times she says "no." If that person claimed he didn't rape the girl, but that the girl consented to sex and then someone else killed her, you wouldn't believe it. You'd say, "Hey, look, I dont' want to be racist, but this guy is plainly of a lower social class and not likely to be considered a sexual opportunity for her." But when the prosectors claim (without any evidence!) that Amanda Knox looked at this shiftless drifter and said, "Oh yeah, we gots to get him in our Satantic Sex Game ritual," you're like, "Oh, that's perfectly plausible. I can totally see this middle-class whitebread girl wanting a walk on the wildside with a dirty semi-homeless petty crook who has 'episodes' where he blacks out and can't remember the things he's done in the interim. I can TOTALLY see her thinking that would be totally hot."

I have a pet theory that another reason the Italian DA and Media are so pushing the Amanda-Knox-is-a-nympho-whore story is because she is, in fact, really hot.  Which makes the story all the more titillating.  And the Italians love them some titillation.

264 >>>Can you explain why the Kercher family is still not satisfied and why they still maintain Knox was involved? >>>It occurred to me that Kercher's sister heard things about Amanda Knox from her sister and perhaps knows the 'real Amanda' and how she behaved in Italy. Um, and I think we should listen to the newtown families about gun safety. See the problem? You do not ask hyperemotional people directly affected by the tragedy for their Dispassionate Analysis. You don't need them as proxies. You can read the judge's report dismissing the conviction as being absurd. It's scathing, and it reveals what a crackpot, evidence-free thing this whole thing was. If you want to know why the Kercher family thinks she's guilty, consider this: Your daughter has just been murdered. You fly to Italy to collect the body. Your first hope is that it's not her body at all, that they made a mistake. But your second hope is that, if it is your daughter, they catch the guy. Now, you're distraught. But as soon as you get there, the prosecutor puts his arm around you and gives you the second-best news you could hear: "We know who did it." From that moment on he's your best friend, your champion, your source of support in a time of the most unbearable grief the human heart can experience. Now, a week after they throw Knox and her boyfriend in jail, the actual killer is found, but that's okay, because the prosecutor now has a new theory: See, the ones we have in jail are actually still guilty, because they recruited this homeless, jobless vagabond and thief to do the deal. SO now we have all THREE killers! And this is what your brain hears during the most massive shock and pain of your entire life. Think that you're thinking dispassionately and logically at this time? Think you're interested in reviewing new evidence later?

265 >>> Also in Italy the locals are hyper racist

In almost every country outside of the USA, the locals are hyper racist.

Which is why it always cracks me up to listen to foreigners criticize the US for how racist we are.

266 >>> have a pet theory that another reason the Italian DA and Media are so pushing the Amanda-Knox-is-a-nympho-whore story is because she is, in fact, really hot. yeah and it's bizarre, because even in the Prosecutor's theory, Rudy Guede is the one who killed her. Amanda maybe "held her down." But no one wants to talk about him. Because he's not hot. He's not hot and white. He's not interesting. He's dirty and, I'm sorry, poor. He's of the criminal class. He's such a boring killer. We see this sort of killer every day. But the hot white girl who's gets off on seeing her friend sexually murdered-- now THAT'S an interesting murder story!

269 I get tired of people who can't think logically and their catch arguments: I think he/she/it is guilty but didn't get a fair trial. I don't think he/she/it is guilty but knows who did it. There are too many unanswered questions!!1!!! [No, there's not. Just because you don't like the answers doesn't mean the questions or case should remain open.] etc. etc. etc.

271 >>> I think he/she/it is guilty but didn't get a fair trial. I don't think he/she/it is guilty but knows who did it. I was just thinking about this in this context two days ago, the psychological safety of the "Middle Ground" position that makes no sense. People do try this all the time. I do it all the time. I try to find some way that feels safe because it gives a little to each "side." And yet, it's usually the position that has NO support for it whatsoever. It just feels safe, but in fact it is often the least reasonable position of all. I remember doing this with Clarence Thomas, trying to figure out a middle path where Thomas said something but Anita Hill misinterpreted it so they were both "right" and "wrong," the differences being in POV and intention and so forth. But eventually I realized it made no sense-- One person was straight-up lying.

272 Amen, Ace. This is an incredible read. It's so convoluted you wonder how the author was able to somehow make sense of it. One tip. If you decide to read, don't get too crazed about remembering and following each and every nuance and character. Far too crazy and involved. Just read, enjoy, and kind of let it wash over you.

278 you may be confusing this book with one I mentioned about amanda knox. while both books feature the same very dubious prosecutor/detective team, and same outrageous theories (satanic sex cults and organ trafficking!), this is a completely different book about a completely different crime that occurred before Amanda Knox was even born.
