Botched Assassination Attempt Used Machine Guns Hidden Behind Car's License Plate
— Ace

Now that I've made it seem cool in the headline, I can reveal to you it actually wasn't very cool. The car was stationary; the assassin intended to activate the guns as the target walked by (as part of his morning routine) via remote control.

So it wasn't a DB-5 machine-gunning the scenery at 130 mph.

The guns did fire but failed to hit the target. In fact, they failed to even upset the target.

As Uproxx notes, the intended target's blase attitude about this -- "All my life is like James Bond stuff" (no really he says that) -- is cooler than the Kill-Car.

64 In perusing the Net today, came across a column by a reporter (and he is actually a good old-fashioned reporter, if biased), saying the "tea party preferred confrontation over patience." I must admit his statement left me confused. Oh, not because he did have not much in the way of an argument to back up his generalization, though he might have his reasons for saying what he did. No, I was confused because this was the same reliable reporter (and he is actually a good old-fashioned shoe-leather man, rather than a trendy hipster)--well, back in the winter he said the "Tea Party" (capitalized back then) was a fever that was basically over, so I find it hard to understand how it could be choosing confrontation in strength today, since just a few months back he was proclaiming its death. Summary: I become increasingly convinced that to lose liberty we need do nothing. As far as losing the old United States itself--it is already essentially gone, only the echoes remain, to fade over time. If we wish a new America like the old, we will have to build it ourselves, brick by brick. Through patient confrontation, patient and *nonyielding* constant confrontation. And seperation if needs be.

117 Well, apparently there's an incident not far from me. Reports are sketchy. I've seen "Major roadway in St. Augustine shutdown, non American screaming threats at everyone, bomb squad, canine, full emergency setup."

122 And in regards to my "the old United States is already dead"-- This afternoon I perused the websites of the history departments of two major universities in my metro area. Though somebody may have escaped my attention, not *one* of the faculty (and at both schools they actually are in the multiple tens) would I care to study under, because not one of them actually specialised in the sort of "main-spring driver" history you will find on the shelves of any bookstore. I really have a hard time believing these people don't believe in "intelligent design", because otherwise I have no idea how they or their students can explain how the America that the black females they study so intently lived in ever came into being besides divine act, because they sure as heck don't study the main thing called "America" anymore. Not the main thing. In any time period. And as to specific subjects: Certainly for a nation founded on war and preserved by one you would, if you went to these schools, have no idea such a phenomena as war (much less the 1775 or 1861 version) was of any importance at all. Judging by faculty research, that is. And yet I have no doubt some of these people probably thought themselves experts on the subject of war 2003-7.

Afrikaners in the RSA are becoming more and more like Romans in Gaul in
the 200s-early 300s: Isolated fortified outposts strung together amidst
increasingly dangerous barbarians

Except that the Gauls were Romans by that time, legally and culturally, and provided an awful lot of legionaries. Also,  a lot of the "barbarians" were pretty Romanized - in the twilight years of the Western Empire some of the staunchest defenders of the old order were the German immigrants.

Rome c. AD 300 wasn't anything like the Empire of AD 100 and nothing like the popular conception of Rome, nor were the barbarians anything like they commonly portrayed.

Lots of Myths out there about that time frame.  And there are some new theories, such as Rome never really collapsed.  It simply divided up among different outposts as the Empire could no longer support the army once they lost North Africa (wheat supply).

Posted by: Vic at July 27, 2013 01:24 PM (lZvxr)

133 Since you put it that way, Grey Fox, ISTR that we used to agree on several things about that general period. I'm always reminding folks that a couple of plagues changed everything for Rome -- they're only used to thinking of plagues in the Middle Ages.

But, all those Vandals and Ostragoths and Visigoths were really just illegal immigrants, and some of them weren't all that illegal either.  I don't know which is more apt: muzzies in G.B., or if all the hispanic-named soldiers in the US armed forces turned out to be LaRaza reconquistadors, but, it was kind of like that.

This would make sense, as the power of Rome declined the local warlords/governors assumed the powers and responsibilities. Politics, as nature, abhors a vacuum, and someone is going to be in charge. (I keep having to tell the anarchists this, given the chance people don't just treat each other fairly; society devolves back down to the strongest man in charge model.)
