— Ace "Phase 2" is Marvel studio's name for the next series of movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which will include Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Captain America 2, and a Guardians of the Galaxy film (that's some extra-terrestrial superhero team, I believe) film before bringing the gang back together for Avengers 2, which will include the cosmic villain Thantos (or whatever) and probably some of the Guardians of the Galaxy too. Though I imagine they'll be featured players.
Marvel producers talk as if these films will all be linked, somehow, sort of like the last series of movies were. (Actually they were mostly linked by Easter Eggs and post-credit bonus clips, but hey, those still count as links.)
I have to note that Marvel has built a billion dollar franchise with its secondary characters, the ones they didn't sell to other studios. Their real top draws are the X-Men and Spiderman; those properties have been sold. But they're making billions by making solid popcorn movies about second-stringers. Iron Man and Thor are sort of the B+ team, not the real A team, and frankly I wouldn't be able to tell you who the hell the Guardians of the Galaxy are if I hadn't read the Marvel team previewing them. ("They'll be led by Star-Fox!," I'm breathlessly told, as if those words contain any meaning in them.)
Hell, they're even doing Ant-Man for Phase 3. Ant-Man. Whose power is shrinking and communicating with... ants.
Aquaman laughs at Ant-Man. Update: Test footage -- a demonstration clip -- of Ant-Man. In this brief clip, you see him using his power to alternately shrink and then grow back to full size to punch up a couple of extras from The Matrix.
So here's Thor 2, in which Thor teams up with Loki to stop... I don't know, they're called Dark Elves or something. I notice they don't say "Dark Elves" in the trailer. Prudent of them. We have to preserve some sense of dignity. Going to a movie where we're told right up front is about Dark Elves would deny us that figleaf of dignity.
Over at Hot Air, Allah grouses about superhero movies again.
Exit question: Aren't these movies the Star Wars of the twenty-aughts and twenty-teens? It's a fictional universe in which Guardians with Special Powers maintain Peace and Order in the Galaxy. Isn't Captain America just a Jedi with a high-tech shield instead of a high-tech sword?
Isn't Iron Man just Chaotic Good Boba Fett?
Isn't Jarvis just disembodied C3PO?
And isn't the Hulk just Gamma-Wookie?
Discuss.

"Isn't Iron Man just Chaotic Good Boba Fett?" means "When I was eight years old I was blowing bubbles and chasing them across my ballet teacher's yard while I waited for him to finish filling a bath for me and I tripped over a pink cupcake I had set down in the sunny grass for the bunnies to have because I was full after just a bite and I was falling through a rainbow! then my testes were wrenched off by a sprinkler head and that's why my voice is like this."

Eh, I enjoyed The Dark Knight trilogy a little more so far, but will see what Marvel does. Maybe Lord of the Rings fits this description more accurately for my generation but the point is everyone's different. I'm sure there were kids back in those times that enjoyed Alien more or Star Trek more than Star Wars. I'm not a huge fan of claiming something represents a generation, I think those assumptions are kind of lazy.

@81 In some cases these rights eventually revert. Frex, I think some movies, like the atrocious spider-man reboot and the new superman movie, are primarily made to keep the rights -- there's some clause about the rights reverting if no movie is made for X duration of time.
-----------------------
The new Superman movie is being made by DC. The intent is that it'll be part of something that eventually links together (with Batman and Wonder Woman films) to create the foundation for a Justice League movie, just as Marvel has managed to do with The Avengers.

I saw a compound bow. With explosive tipped arrows.
Which is stupid on multiple levels.
1) Arrows are slower than bullets
2) Explosive tipped arrows are way louder than guns
3) A quiver will always hold less arrows than nearly all guns
4) A bow is no where near as maneuverable as a gun in combat
5) The weakest gun still has a kill range far beyond the strongest bow
6) An old, bolt action will get of more rounds in the same time than a bowman.

Warner Bros. doesn't have to worry about the rights reverting. They share a parent company with DC Comics. ANY DC movie project was always going to be a Warner operation.
The Marvel stuff floundered because they lacked a strong parent like Disney to make it all happen under one roof. With the Diney acquisition of Marvel that obviously changed dramatically.
And it isn't Star Fox. It's Star-Lord, a charcter who originally mainly seen in black and white magazine format stuff Marvel did in the 70s. That was also where the Punisher first had his own series, as they believed the black and white mags would allow for an older audience and stories better suited to the character than the Spider-man setting where he originated.
Just to complicate things, there was an entirely different Guardians of the Galaxy at Marvel in the 70s and 80s. That series was set 1,000 years in the future with one of the character being a very well preserved astronaut who was possibly the last living true human. All of the other characters were aliens or descended from altered human stock to adapt to colonizing planets that were otherwise uninhabitable. One of the members of that group was Starhawk. Yeah, another Star guy. Except when he was a hot chick. Who was his sister and somehow the mother of their three children who were somehow created despite the two of them sharing a body and only one being able to exist at a time.
It got really complicated and I never saw some issues.
Anyway, the more recent Guardians of the Galaxy were created largely to retain control of the name, and they were essentially a mish-mash of accumulated outer space characters Marvel had on hand who previously had little or no relation to each other.
Starfox made appearances but was never a member, never mind the leader. And he isn't called Star Fox anymore. He was originally named Eros and is Thanos' normal looking brother and all-around horndog. He has a certain amount of ability to make people, especially women, like him. And he likes being liked. There was a She-hulk story where she was his attorney when he stood accused of using his power to date rape half the women in the Marvel universe. Technically, this would include She-hulk too but she told herself that it wasn't really an issue since she'd bumped uglies with a pretty large assortment of the Marvel universe too and probably didn't need to be telepathically coerced.
Anyway, after Nintendo created a franchise under the Starfox name that was worth far more to them than the comics character was to Marvel, Marvel let it go and just called him Eros again.

Not really a Superman villain. More universal than that. Kirby created him for an entirely new setting and after two attempts at Marvel took it to DC. Part of the problem for Marvel was that the Fourth World setting was supposed to be what arose after Ragnarok and the destruction of Asgard. He tried to redo the concept around the Inhumans, thinking it might be allowed as those characters were more expendable. After that, it finally sank in that he wasn't going to be allowed to do a storyline that hinged on killing off a lot of existing characters. (Something Alan Moore learned when he proposed what became Watchmen using the recently acquired Charlton characters.)

Not really, since most of the concepts predate "A New Hope" by at least a decade.
I see what you mean, that these will capture pop-culture, but Marvel Comics has a LOT of source material to draw on, it isn't invented or stolen whole-cloth as Star Wars was back in 1976.
And sorry for being a whiny comic geek, but this is (and this is another geeky comment only some might get) sort of like "Macross ripped off Battletech for their designs!" Marvel was first, so while the general public might see it as you phrased it, it's technically incorrect.
FWIW, this is an awesome palate-cleanser after the last few posts -- thanks so much, Ace!

To be fair, the original concept for the Ultimates was that they were all assholes of one type or another. Then Marvel forgot it was supposed to be DIFFERENT from the standard MU and started dragging all of the baggage over to the Ultimates-verse, too.

You didn't miss much. The Ultimates was successful, but I think it speaks more to the deteriorating comics readership and their views of "mature" than to any real, actual quality.

Before Grant Morrison had his way him, Animal Man was a bit of a goofball. I suspect they were trying to give him snappy patter ala Spider-man but the writer really wasn't up tot he task. He barely existed for twenty years, then was dredged up along with a zillion other long forgotten characters in 'Crisis on Infinite Earths' in the mid-80s.
That was the first time I ever saw him. He was one of those characters who would appear just often enough to maintain the copyright and no more. In Crisis the most notable thing he did was to exclaim "Well cut my calories and call me skinny!" Yes, I remember that because it was so odd that even one of the other characters in the scene commented on it.
But a couple years later he was given his own book with Grant Morrison given free rein to be insane and it became a hit, lasting for 80-something issues, although Morrison left somewhere in the 20s. Another insane Brit took over and went in a totally different direction, having his first issue start with Buddy Baker awakening and deciding everything up until then had been a dream.

The title of his series is "The Invincible Iron Man". That's kind of important. Iron Man is atoning for his past, and is actively seeking an honorable death. (And failing to find it, hence the "invincible.") Since he no longer has a physical heart, he believes himself incapable of love (or indeed, most strong emotion). He actively embraces a self-destructive, hedonistic lifestyle, after all, he's *trying* to die, and figures he might as well have a good time while he's at it. (Until it starts interfering with the "honorable" part of an honorable death, at which point, he reins it in. Generally a bit too late to avoid looking like an ass or getting into trouble.)
He may be second-tier, but he is a great character. In contrast, Thor and Captain America are pretty one-dimensional.
Posted by: Luke at April 23, 2013 03:32 PM (sGrNc)
There were some great moments. Especially when they're sitting around and wondering who will play them in the inevitable movie. Nick Fury says it's a given that he'll be played by Sam Jackson. (There was a standing agreement that they could base the character visually on Jackson so long as Jackson had first dibs on any movie role derived from the character, so it really was already cast.)
The Wasp, who is of Japanese ancestry in this universe, laments that she will almost certainly be played by Lucy Lui, despite the actress being Chinese.

What the existence of the Cosmic Cube (that is what it's called in the comics) means to the aliens is that Earth is now a place worth conquering. Before that it is regarded as having neither the wealth or the challenge to be worth the effort. Plus, once a civilization starts producing artifacts like the Cube, it needs to be brought under heel before it becomes a real problem for those who consider themselves the owners of the galaxy.

There is some setup there. The forces that came through the portal were called Chitauri. In the Ultimate Universe setting, those are just Skrulls under a different name. (One theory is that the Skrulls encountered by the Fantastic Four way back when called themselves Skrulls because that is what the Kree call them and they regard Earth as an abandoned Kree colony world.)
A lot of the Avengers movie took material from the first big Ultimates arc, in which it turns out the Chitauri had been feeding technology to the Nazis during WWII but extremely few people knew about it. This included Captain America but he got frozen soon after learning the truth.
During the big battle against Chitauri in modern New York, the Hulk is taunted by their leader, who says the Hulk cannot really hurt him due to his shape shifting ability allowing him to deform around any blow the Hulk might strike. The Hulk responds by EATING him. In a following issue it is shown that some unfortunate SHIELD personnel have the job of collecting and examining the Hulk's poop to be sure the Chitauri leader didn't somehow survive and set up housekeeping in the Hulk's colon.
I wouldn't be surprised if one of the Avengers is revealed to actually have been a Chitauri all along and the real Avenger a prisoner since before they first operated as a group. It would be especially good if it were Hawkeye, and Loki never knew he was controlling someone who was already a double agent.

I vaguely recall the girl in City Hunter having some gentle moments during his occasional moments of heroism - after which he goes back to pervert mode. At which point she gives up and goes back to blunt force trauma.
The more I think about it, the more I think he's a Moron - obsessed with boobehs, occasionally competent, and needing some female guidance to stay on track.
