27 Reposting my commentary from the morning thread, vis a vis things to come. Just as I hit "post" the news of Mrs. Thatcher came. What a giant. What a great loss. RIP Margaret Thatcher. The will to power and the illusion of "the perfectibility of man." Whatever "ism" is the flavor the times, it all boils down to (with a hat tip to Levin) liberty versus tyranny. From the memoirs of Sir Edward Grey, as the First World War loomed... "A friend came to see me on one of the evenings of the last week — he thinks it was on Monday, August 3rd. We were standing at a window of my room in the Foreign Office. It was getting dusk, and the lamps were being lit in the space below on which we were looking. My friend recalls that I remarked on this with the words: "The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime." Why do I get the sickening feeling that this is going to be our fate?

28 We will not see their like again soon.

The good news: I think we will.  As great as she was, there are always new ones coming along who could fill her shoes.

The bad news:  The new great ones usually don't emerge until things go really pear-shaped.

34 28 The bad news: The new great ones usually don't emerge until things go really pear-shaped. Posted by: pep at April 08, 2013 08:10 AM (YXmuI) In the past, going pear shaped didn't necessarily have as dire consequences as they do now. I envision nukes going off and the utter destruction of the world economy. Gevalt.

Foundations of the earth out of kilter and all that. Inside the battle it appears shadowy, but we must keep sight of the truth that the light wins ultimately because light is real while darkness is light blocked. We have our inspirations, heroes in the war, who show what just a few can do.

(Mining & Quarrying) to pack sand, earth, etc. into (a drill hole) over an explosive [probably a back formation from tampin (obsolete variant of tampion), which was taken as being a present participle tamping]

117 "The lamps are going out. . . ." And not just in Europe this time. Lenin & Whittaker Chambers both knew we were headed down this road; even the Gipper's bringing the Wall down just delayed it a bit. Collectivism or Progressivism (which is all neo-Marxism in the end) cannot coexist with individual liberty & a free market. One or the other must go. The bad news is that collectivism is winning. Our young people have been indoctrinated in schools & by the media -- and we have been seduced (to some extent) by the gimme's, the breads & circuses. Many of us are terrified of them going away. Much like those Israelites in the Wilderness, the comforts we are permitted in captivity may be more than we can achieve in liberty. Also we are bereft of that moral courage and those who have within them a moral compass that seems -- in retrospect -- a miracle. Ah, we are going to miss them terribly. There are dark days ahead, and no mistaking it, my friends. The GOOD news? Collectivism -- in all its forms -- cannot, in the long haul, succeed. It will fail. And when it does, some young patriots being home schooled and well taught today will be there to guide the way toward liberty, using that Constitution of the Founding Fathers as a guide! May Heaven find a way to help us toward sanity and salvation earlier rather than later! Perhaps our beloved Iron Lady and the Gipper can join forces in Heaven. We miss you.

That they held the line and refused to knuckle under is not to be doubted, however, and they deserve their place in history as the three great leaders (two political, one spiritual) of the Free World in the late 20th Century. First off, Roger Ebert was a hateful and hate-filled little man who made himself feel big by calling men whose shoes he was not fit to shine little men.

Second, I can't speak for the rest of the Horde, but any time I saw anyone actively celebrating his death (at least on the same day) I told them to knock it off.  Do you think any Huffpo reader would do the same re: Lady Thatcher?

Oh- for those who don't read the ONT- the first draft of the novel is done!  85,500 words (approximately).  Now I get to start editing and revising prior to seeing if I can get it published (or if I want to self-publish).

199 They don't make them like Lady Thatcher anymore. In fact, most men politicians in the UK have fewer stones than her.

And just think- she didn't need to hawk "free" abortion and contraception.

RIP

200 This is proof positive that HuffPo knows how hateful is their readership.Posted by: Decaf at April 08, 2013 09:25 AM (Yhnwv)

Well, yes. But also bear in mind, we were making some pretty bad jokes about the recent passing of Robert Ebert and saying we're glad he's dead. That's a wee bit hateful as well.

201 198 Allen G,

Congrats.

Heralder wants me to fill guilt about jokes I did not tell.

My assessment of Egbert was simple...

Roger you had some very interesting things to say on God...

do let me know what God says on you.

202 196 Heralder,

There is no point.

Egbert got back what he offered in his twilight.

You reap what you sow, you whinging that we should rise above the crop the left planted does not mean we should rise above it, it means we should harvest it and send it back to them processed and more efficient.

Let the cold grow warm and the warm go hot.

I'm surprised people think I'm comparing Ebert to Thatcher in pointing out the treatment of his death.  This wasn't a Hugo Chavez moment, Ebert was just a bitter lefty movie critic.  I'm also not here to scold, it's a little late for that, and that's not my bag.  My point is, the left might excel at being nasty cranks, especially at the death of right wing people, but it's not exactly something they have a monopoly on.

206 By the way, I believe that today is also Yom ha Shoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. Please take a moment to reflect. And on behalf of my family, may G-d bless the GI's who saved the world, especially the men of the 11th Armored Division. And G-d bless America, now and always.

207 203 Heralder,

my point is rather similar to the US' response to unrestricted submarine warfare in WW1...

you would have us continuing to argue to an imaginary court for imaginary justice....

I would have us taking notes and beating the future Axis at their own game...

you know like the united States Navy did in WW2....

the Germans get the hoopla we silently and happily tried to sink everything on the ocean not working for the allies or neutral....

they want to cheer our dead, I'll cheer theirs....

they want to use Bronx cheers, I'll use Bronx cheers.

I was responding to decaf who mentioned they had to close the comments at Huffpo.  My point was, we're not exactly kind to our political enemies when they pass.  As a whole we tend to be kinder, yes, but the difference isn't always so stark.

Obviously none of this applies to you, and that's ok.

220 213 Posted by: Heralder at April 08, 2013 09:47 AM (+xmn4) I will say this; whenever someone on the left dies, the commenters at AOSHQ are the first to yell for the ban-hammer when someone gets out of line. Was Roger Ebert on par with Bin-Laden? Of course not. Was Ebert a detestable misanthrope who hurled invective every chance he got? Yes, and because of that he is deserving of our ire and criticism. Goofing on his cancer is out of bounds. And I'll say that the fact the we had almost a flame war going about anyone touching that topic speaks volumes about the character of the people who post here and conservatives in general. When Breitbart died, it was all the commies could do to contain themselves. They were frothing at the mouth with the most vile posts, none of which addressed anything salient about the man or his life. We don't need vulgarity to attack the left. We just use it to color our facts and figures. Vulgarity is all the left have because history, fact and logic are not on their side.

Factoid: The SS Thrasher was named after Margaret Thrasher.

Actually, SSN Thrasher is part of the "Bird" Class of British nuclear attack submarines.  Its named after the Double-Breasted Mattress Thrasher, which is common to Northern Europe and the British Isles.
