BREAKING: Massive Explosion At Fertilizer Plant Near Waco, Texas
— DrewM

An unbelievable week is getting worse.

The explosion was reported at around 7:50 p.m. in a frantic radio call from the scene of the fire at West Fertilizer at 1471 Jerry Mashek Dr. just off Interstate 35.

Numerous injuries were reported and multiple ambulances were requested.

Several buildings were reported destroyed and a nearby nursing home was damaged.

There were reports that people were trapped in the nursing home and in an apartment building.

Scanner traffic indicated that some residents of both the nursing home and apartment building were severely injured.

A triage area was established at the intersection of Haven and North Reagan Streets.

A number of buildings were reported to be burning, some in residential areas.

West Middle School was one of the buildings reported to be on fire.

Update: Damn.

I changed the photo because there's some talk that other one might be Photoshoped. Sorry about that. (Via TMI3rd, it was an old photo of a refinery fire.)

9 Medivac helos already on scene, more requested.

This is a bad one. A really bad one.

Here's the Twitter feed of the Waco newspaper.

They set up a triage area in a nearby (looks like a block or two away) on a football field. They are now evacuating that over concern of more explosions.

There was also a report (unconfined so BIG GRAIN OF SALT) that a nearby nursing home collapsed.

You have to have a permit to buy large quantities and buying even 50 lbs requires an id and registering the purchase.

37 I am 25 miles away as the crow flies.  The explosion was so loud and the house shook so badly that I thought we had experienced an act of war.  One window broke to pieces.  Everyone around is helping the rural firefighters, paramedics, and other people with helpful skills or supplies to get on the road.  Communications are spotty, and the local medical facilities all the way to Waco are in chaos.  Pray for these people.  This is a nice little town full of good folks.  I have family there I cannot reach.

Yes, we lived in fear of a big boom like this one in Waco.  There was a smaller one today at a plant in my hometown.  It sent twelve men to the hospital.  Two of them with severe burns to UTMB in Galveston.  They were welding a pipe that they thought was empty of fuel.  Turns out it wasn't.

The worst explosion in this country's history, the Texas City explosion of 1947 killed over six hundred people. A 441 foot long French ship loaded with ammonium nitrate blew up in the harbor of Texas City on April 16th, 1947 with such force that the Strategic Air Command of the United States and seismologists as far away as Denver actually thought that an atomic bomb had exploded.

We should remove the April from the calender.

71 Why is this ricin thing such big news? Some tard, that didn't know what he was doing, was already being watched by LE, and that managed to put no one at risk is the Top News of the Night? Why? The FBI distributed pictures to the media of two men connected with the Boston bombing, and said they really wanted to id these two men...but oh, hey....don't show the pictures! Bleh.... I'm going to go watch something believable, like "The Horrors of Spider Island", or maybe "Them".

78 Unreal. This is definately Waco related, one would think. And one would think, in 2013, Occupy.

Just coming here to chime in about guest on Hannity tonight (memory fails me). He said a Saudi National was deported today by ICE. Drudge links that The Won met with Saud diplomat today, not on WH calendar. UK Daily Mail give more information from the Saudi who was tackled for "acting suspiciously." Monday, before he was "cleared" he had burns on his hands...that story quickly was gone. Burn marks on hands when the rest of the injuries were to lower extremities (except for the poor children who were lower in height). Something smells, big time.

This link to Daily Mail shows the guy and the fact that he is from Medina. Same guy who was admitted to Brigham and Women's hospital. This hospital and courthouse evacuated at same time. NDH, in another link, stated this and it is confirmed...was this guy sprinted out and then to Logan and back to his homeland? This keeps getting more crazy.

108 Well, I'm sure there have been prayers on the left for a fertilizer explosion they could somehow connect to Waco. Just not this sort. On a more serious note, this points out the hidden nature of so much of what drives our society. It is still industrial at its heart, always will be (tough to live on information), and is not always harmless. Those who do the unglamorous and routine simple yeoman work that allows civilization to exist should be honored. At least as much as a Boudin, Ayers, or Dohrn. If it is not too much to ask.

Prayers for all. I am interested in learning the true chronology of events because on Twitchy one of the Texas stations is reporting that firefighters were back at the plant after an earlier fire rekindled when the explosion happened.

Not to be called a crank or a nutjob or whatever, because there are lots of things that explode (and good grief I regret my post in the ONT now about splodey things) at a fertilizer plant, but don't terrorists often like to set off an explosion after a first one to catch the first responders? Or is that an urban legend?

153 Saudi is filled with crazies. Kevin Bacon effect means any Saudi's life, if examined in detail, will bring up some shady associatins/relatives.

Walid Shoebat noted that this particular Arabian wasn't a Saudi ... he was a Harbi. This matters because the Saudi family really isn't directly associated with terrorism; they already got theirs, so they don't want to rock the boat. But the Saudi family does have to pay other clans off.

One of those clans, which Shoebat associates with terrorism, are the Harbis.

Still. Even if Shoebat is right that clan is *everything* in Arabian culture (and I think he is) he is still off base when he says that, just because someone was born in a clan, that this means he must be "omgz associated with terristz".

I think the ricin guy did his thank on April 11th and was known, per McCaskill, as a crank. He deserves everything he gets if guilty and stupid and do not care about his politics, whether he votes the same as I do. He created some terror, but doubt he is in same cabal as the Boston monsters.

Those responder folks are cathing alligators from everywhere.

Trying to evacuate 3/4 of the town.
People wandering back into the areas they've already cleared.
Second anhydrous tank just caught on fire.
Wrecks on the highway.
Rubberneckers (from Wisconsin of all places) driving around the evacuated area.
Hot powerlines by the middle school.
Traffic is clogging all the main roads.

In all fairness to the USPS, whatever their shortcomings, you have to keep in mind that after the post-9/11 anthrax stuff all mail going into federal offices gets screened.  So there's likely a pretty good bottleneck once it gets to DC.

204 What this explosion should also remind of is the ephemereal nature of so much we consider elite and "top of the food chain". Take our friend Billy Barker from earlier today. I'm quite sure he would consider himself one of the more highly evolved forms of life in the American biosphere. Probably went to an elite college, all the right grades, all the proper attitudes. Never for him the dull drudgery of blue collar life on a factory floor in an out of the way town in a hick state. Never for him the time consuming and intense technical education and somewhat prosaic life of a plant engineer, a man of action loved by neither union nor top management. And certainly never for him the grasping and avaricious life of the capitalist who built and runs the plant. But the worker, the engineer, and the capitalist in this plant in this out of the way town in an "unfashionable" state are far more necessary to the continued existence of society than a Billy Baker ever will be--especially if we consider the level of deference and discretion Billy demands to what he actually brings to the table. If he disappeared tomorrow, if his entire organization disappeared tomorrow, society would quickly move on. But the disappearance of a fertilizer pant, an unloved non-hip fertilizer plant, is going to have ramifications, in some way, shape, or form. Maybe not serious, but society needs fertilizer. It wants news. There is a difference. And if I have been unfair, if Billy himself has character, then can we not nevertheless think that certainly we will not have far to go among his friends on the left and associates in the media till we find our target? For too often today, our "elites" stand on the shoulders of ordinary men and think they are giants. And they simply aren't.

Burns on his hands, how is that evidence of anything? I'd leave too just as a precaution and let things blow over to make sure it's safe before returning to finish school.

Back at the house for a moment.  Thank you for the kind thoughts and prayers.  Am volunteering to knock on doors in areas outlying West, as pressure wave apparently was strong enough to blow people off their feet up to at least three miles away if they were outside.  As it was still late daylight, there are worries that older people either outside or inside their homes may be injured from falls, glass, etc.  We are expecting serious thunderstorms tonight, and don't want anyone helpless outside.

Any of you morons who are in the general area, check out your neighbors.  If they are close to West proper, tell them to go to someone out of town tonight.  There are major gas leaks in town, and they are trying to get everyone out that they can.

The agency investigated West Fertilizer on June 20, 2006, after receiving a complaint from a resident 11 days earlier about a strong ammonia smell. The scene of the explosion will be treated like a crime scene until they can prove it was an industrial accident. The McLennan County Sheriff's office is investigating the deaths while the ATF is investigating the fire at the plant.
